OMG I almost didn't watch this one but it left me so inspired not just for photography but for life. I probably will never be a wedding photographer I don't have that passion but Joe's never being too old is such an inspiration. Joe has been my Idol and Role model for years!!! I began following him in 2003, met him for the first time in 2004 thru PICTAGE, he taught me in 2008 tag team with Dennis Reggie and has been my dear friend ever since and I miss him so much. His talks and life journey encouraged me to return to school after I retired in 2015, went on a Wedding Photographer hiatus, went back to school, became a photojournalist, earned my Bachelor’s, working on my Masters and more than likely going to pursue my PhD. Heading back to Weddings next season!
Vanessa J... you "eeked" shooting with Joe's camera - at that moment I was Jealous (in the best possible way). Joe has been the same since I picked up my camera: energetic, pushing the Gospel of age ain't nothing but a number and do you. I love this guy! I just turned 49 and have shot casually, for fun at many friend's weddings. I never wanted to be a formal wedding photographer, but I love taking all the behind the scenes, casual shots that people just naturally warm up to. And I can't dance, so it's always great to be on the dance floor and no one bugging me about not dancing. Because I'm just shooting. Love it!
Wow! Starting at 44. Honestly, that makes me feel so much better. I always see these younger photographers and I'm always "you're luckily you're starting now keep it up." Didn't get my start till my 30s (which is still young). But this was such an amazing story. Thank you for sharing!
Wow!! Possibly one of the most inspiring videos I’ve watched! I started my photography journey just over 2 years ago when my wife gave birth to our daughter. I have recently moved into wedding photography and about to shoot only my third wedding come September this year with a further 5 booked in so far next year. But wow what an amazing journey this guy had! Those prices are to dream for! And it’s not impossible for any one of us.

do what works for you... havent found what that is yet. competing against 9,300 photographers in a town of 34,000 people, with most of those 'photographers' willing to give their work away for free, is HARD... the PJ angle on weddings is great because thats what ive shot most of my "photo" career. even in THAT niche, no one wants to pay...

One of the Mac Daddy Wedding photogs back in the late 70's was Monte Zucker. I think that man had more PPA covers than any other photographer. I miss his work.

I'm a retired shooting pro and photography teacher and years ago I took a workshop in Toronto with Joe and about 200 tough, hardened commercial wedding photographers. It was the best by far workshop (and I took a lot of pro-level workshops) I've ever taken. Why? I mean I know how to use a camera. I've won awards for my shooting. I taught literally thousands of students over the years but I've never been in crowd where a fellow pro's photos being projected on a screen elicited sounds of people weeping all around me. Joe is that good. His images are superb and his presentations are magic. After a lifetime of my shooting images going over 50 years I was not worthy LOL. There were higher levels of shooting I had not imagined. Go see this man if you want to radically improve your wedding or special event shooting. And Joe I never forgot your stories or the images. Thank you so much.
I knew David West when he was on my executive during the late 90's PPO Central Portrait but not familiar with Peter West. Like Peter I too am a retired pro wedding photographer of 33 years in the Toronto area but retired for 22 years. Too bad I had not heard of Joe Buissink as it would have been nice to attend the seminar. Only Joe I remember was Joe Zeltsman whose week long classes I attended in 1975 or 76. Of course in our time the journalism style began with the advent of the photography of Denis Reggie. The style used by most of us was much different from JB and digital photography changed things a lot simply due to cost as every crank of the Hassy was $1.00. Denis was one that got into the range or higher that JB back in the '80's but not many accomplished that. Income were much different for the average couple.

Great interview and a lot photographers recognize his name! As the second shooter, Joe is free to do very creative and emotional photos capturing spontaneous moments and emotional images at the heart of the wedding. Regarding how much he gets paid for weddings, well, if he fits the right crowd (and he does) who want him and want to pay his fees, more power to him. Movie stars and famous musicians and the wealthy can certainly afford him! Joe can be first or second shooter, but has more freedom to find creative shots on his own teaming up with other photographers.
I would love to try Wirestock but I refuse to do business with PayPal and have no idea who Payoneer is (and, therefore, no reason to trust them) so I guess Wirestock isn't for me. Perhaps when they get real payment option befitting professional/business photographers I'll check them out again.
Yeah I’m not a wild fan of PayPal myself but it IS the best way to transfer money domestically AND internationally so it’s hard to fight city hall on that one.

So for me it's not a matter of holding my nose and using a company I would prefer not to use, but a matter of I **cannot** use PayPal (and my situation is hardly unique). Wirestock could transfer funds using ACH or Zelle or any of several other options; until they do I personally will take it as a lack of commitment to content producers and a reason for me to look elsewhere. That was so motivational! I started doing weddings a year ago, and I truly found what I wanted to be when I grew up! I’m 33 now but to see him who started in his 40s is so inspiring. I get on myself sometimes for not stumbling onto photography at a younger ago, but this, this showed me that the universe will put you in the right spot at the right time when it’s ready for you
Gosh, this is amazing - I thought I knew who he was from seeing a video about 15 years ago, it had that photo of Christina Applegate looking out of the car window on her wedding day, and Joe was giving the story behind it!

Joe Buissink has always been open to sharing all he knows to his admirers though-out the world! I've enjoyed listening to Joe speak over the years at the WPPI wedding/portrait convention held yearly in Las Vegas. It's exiting to see how he presents his portfolio...as beautiful, (usually hand printed B&W's) art prints that are matted in a museum style presentation. And he tells the viewer a short story of how he got the shot! I love hearing those stories!! - joe homsy
Met Joe at a GraphiStudio workshop a number of years ago, he was touring with the incomparable Yervant. This was probably 2007-2008 timeframe. Learned a lot from both of them. Most of Joe's words have stuck with me ever since. He talked about that shot in the video. He talked about how he sits back as the ninja sniper. He talked about shooting on film and having a guy doing the developing and printing by hand in the lab. A true artist and inspiration. Happy Birthday Joe...

There were about 17 places where I went "WOW!" And yet the question burning in my mind is: Is your favorite Def Leppard song "Photograph"? I want to believe it is.
So massively inspiring! I am a little older than Joe when he started as a photographer and it's the desire to capture my kids' lives with the quality of photos that make me smile that it getting me into photography. I would love to get to the point where I could shoot weddings and portraits and I'm curious how long it took from Joe picking up the camera and photographing his child and getting the creative itch until he started shooting weddings: what were the steps along the way and what helped him get to his level of mastery?
This video just inspires me like no other. I can’t wait for my next wedding. I just wish this video was longer!!!! This needs to be an hour long video to capture more of his story.

Denis Reggie is my guy like this. A photojournalist who shoots weddings. Inspired me to shoot for a couple years but I kept running into people who wanted the old style of formals. And then, of course, print sales disappeared because everyone only wanted a disc of unedited images. 🤦🏾♂️ 🤷🏾♂️
Have been waiting for this since you teased a budget shoot out with Joe a bit ago. Very similar sentiments to yours regarding Joe. His amazing ability to *connect* inspired me to begin my photography journey years ago. Joe’s work showed me it wasn’t about the gear (“P Mode”). It’s about connecting on a human level. It’s about understanding that what you see through that lens is a reflection of who you are. I’ve embraced that philosophy and it has done more to grow me as a photographer than anything else. I've enjoyed listening to Joe speak over the years at the WPPI wedding/portrait convention held yearly in Las Vegas.
It's exiting to see how he presents his portfolio...as beautiful, (usually hand printed B&W's) art prints that are matted in a museum style presentation. And he tells the viewer a short story of how he got the shot! I love hearing those stories!! - joe homsy

Met Joe at a GraphiStudio workshop a number of years ago, he was touring with the incomparable Yervant. This was probably 2007-2008 timeframe. Learned a lot from both of them. Most of Joe's words have stuck with me ever since. He talked about that shot in the video. He talked about how he sits back as the ninja sniper. He talked about shooting on film and having a guy doing the developing and printing by hand in the lab. A true artist and inspiration. Happy Birthday Joe...

So massively inspiring! I am a little older than Joe when he started as a photographer and it's the desire to capture my kids' lives with the quality of photos that make me smile that it getting me into photography. I would love to get to the point where I could shoot weddings and portraits and I'm curious how long it took from Joe picking up the camera and photographing his child and getting the creative itch until he started shooting weddings: what were the steps along the way and what helped him get to his level of mastery?

Denis Reggie is my guy like this. A photojournalist who shoots weddings. Inspired me to shoot for a couple years but I kept running into people who wanted the old style of formals. And then, of course, print sales disappeared because everyone only wanted a disc of unedited images. 🤦🏾♂️ 🤷🏾♂️

Have been waiting for this since you teased a budget shoot out with Joe a bit ago. Very similar sentiments to yours regarding Joe. His amazing ability to *connect* inspired me to begin my photography journey years ago. Joe’s work showed me it wasn’t about the gear (“P Mode”). It’s about connecting on a human level. It’s about understanding that what you see through that lens is a reflection of who you are. I’ve embraced that philosophy and it has done more to grow me as a photographer than anything else. Great video Vanessa! Looking forward to the shoot out.
