When I joined the corps we din't have any fancy-shmancy anti-material rifles, We had sticks! two sticks and a rock for the whole platoon, and we had to share the rock
The movement doesn't tell the full story, energy transfer is only part of the equation. The rifle has massive recoil reduction giving it more of a push then punch.
As Jay Dunbar noted, recoil consists of both the force of the rearward motion on the weapon, and how long it takes that force to be fully transmitted to the shooter. More weight = better diffusion of the recoil force, which is why an M1911 in .45ACP is less painful to shoot than a Kel-Tec .380 despite being far more powerful. The Denel 20mm has a colossal amount of recoil force, but the muzzle brake mitigates a lot of it, the hydraulic recoil mechanism delays that recoil for a VERRRRY long (relative) period of time, and then whatever's left has to force itself against a rifle that weighs as much as a medium-sized boat anchor. This results in the famous "push" vs. "punch" that allows anti-tank and anti-materiel rifles to be shoulder-fired (rather than tripod mounted, which is the next step up). You get a rather serious "shove" (over a second or so) which pushes your body back many inches, but it's not like getting full-on punched by the rifle in a sixteenth of a second. Try that without all the recoil reducing features and you'd shatter your scapula and dislocate your shoulder. Probably something you'd remember unpleasantly.
yea I was amazed to see that even with 2 forms (right?) of mechanical recoil-reduction it still pushed him back like half a foot almost instantly. I can't imagine what it would do if it had no reduction whatsoever. Like Alex said, broken scapula easily.
You see, in South Africa, contrary to what some might tell you, this rifle wasn’t built to destroy light vehicles. Rather, we had a rather serious Tyrannosaurus rex problem. *Had.*
It works fine when shooting for the sides, however you ought to avoid the armoured plates and the spine ridge. The 20mm has a tough time penetrating that part of the body even with AP rounds.( However 14.5mm AP works fine) The ventral plate is generally weak enough for HE to pen and destroy the 4th heart.
my village in Kazakhstan is having an issue with this smug little bitch of a brachiosaurus that thinks he's all that because he's big, will this rifle solve our problems?
Using the spent cartridges as a tool to take the rifle apart is so simple it hurts. These guys were really thinking about the design, excellent engineering
Ian pulls trigger, gets thrown back across the room, runs back to the gun giggling and smiling, shoots 2 more. Turns solemnly to the camera “this is quite a nice recoil, indeed it’s quite smooth”. Video continues.
I mean all that happened between the first shot and the second shot was him moving the bipod forward slightly to the brace, as intending, and then adjusting his position on his arm rest. He didn't adjust the entire gun and table set up, he slid the gun forward 4 inches and moved his arm.
I get that it is meant as a joke but the recoil seems to be rather a long and relatively easy push rather than a quick impulsive and hurtful punch that lets you fly for the most part. The result in distance will be the same but the first is more pleasant to shoot.

@@kohai-kun9261 In WZ, the ZRG is the highest damage sniper, it does 20 more damage to the chest and extremities and 40 more to the stomach than the kar98. It also has the highest bullet velocity, ZRG is actually REALLY GOOD in WZ at the moment, give it another try ;)
Not only that i think with a little bit of tinkering and talk ideas over a magazine fed 20x110 is certainly possible maybe a bit bigger hydraulic recoil buffer it can be manageable too
I almost fainted when I just had the realization of how insane tanks must be when Ian said “no modern rifle can get through a tank, those days are long long gone”
@Melvi Vanilly this is significantly more powerful than a 50bmg and would still struggle against even semi decent tank armour which a even the most extreme 50bmg won't even tickle
Melvi Vanilly The .50 bmg raufoss round, which you are thinking of, could not penetrate the armor of a modern battle tank in its wildest dreams. Tungsten or not, most modern composite tank armors will bounce high velocity 105mm spent uranium Sabot rounds, let alone any .5 inch rifle in existence.
@@xtflogicalohio3044 engine is inside hull, that's a no. And modern MBTs hide their turret rings fairly well. Trust me, no rifle or cannon a man can carry will go through a tank, we already learned that in WW2. RPGs and such weren't invented for fun
@Melvi Vanilly it cannot even dent modern MBTs there's a reason why most modern tank cannons are 110mm+, hell most modern main battle tanks can take a 84×246 mm or two .
I've had the privilege of shooting this rifle, it doesn't have your typical recoil, it feels more like someone pushing you, been at that specific range many many time doing other tests.
Color me ENVIOUS! I expect both the weapon and each (with HE projectile, over .50 cal) round would require a destructive device tax stamp here, that would make for some expensive range time...
@@Bert2368 probably irrelevant except for your display ammo, good luck finding a range that will allow explosive ammo. If I'm not mistaken, even those big machinegun venues require inert ammo.
That's actually the case. Painful recoil comes from improper posture and from recoil that has enough force to punch you in the shoulder but not enough force to slide your body like this one does. Now imagine if he had his back flat against that blast shield behind him. If he fired the gun then he is going to have a very bad time.
This reminds me of a friend of mine; 5'6" 110 lbs sopping wet with change in his pockets. He loved to buy up 460 Weatherby ammo in packages with one round missing (it only took one shot for most shooters to decide they didn't really need a 460 Weatherby) and plink away from the prone position. He didn't have a very high rate of fire, because he had to low crawl back to the line after each shot.
Some of the features on this thing are absolutely genius, I’d have never thought of stuff like the primary extraction lever. The guys at Denel seem like they have a REALLY good handle on what they’re doing. Massive props to them for that.

I'm not much for .50 and above guns, but this design I can fall in love with. It looks outwardly like a complete no-nonsense industrial design, but when you look closely there is so much thought and consideration into every single detail. The hydraulic dampeners, the trigger & safety, the scope, the handle, the disassembly, the action, everything shines with superb engineering forethought. Even one of these would be a selling point on a high-end light fifty sporting rifle, but seeing them all combined in such harmony makes my heart melt. Thanks for the video, Ian, it really made my day!
I don't think a lot of non gun people realize how much us gun people really enjoy the engineering aspect of firearms. It's like looking at the mechanism of a Swiss watch.
When I subscribed to Forgotten Weapons, we didn't have fancy-Schmanzy Anti-Materiel Rifles! We had sticks. Two stick and a rock for the whole platoon! And we had to share the rock! You should consider yourself very lucky youtube commenters!
@4:30 over 1.1km per second is amazing. The energy involved and the speed makes the footage of shooting it all the more impressive. Brilliant Thanks for including metric for us none Americans. It's much appreciated!
One of the best things about this beast of a gun is that for something that looks like just about the most impractical things ever fielded by any military, mechanically it's one of the most practical firearms ever made. Damn near everything about it is designed with ease of use and maintenance in the field in mind. Very cool weapon.
I like how he does these videos incase anybody needs to repair their NTW-20 incase something happened. Very informative for a gun ill prolly never see.
I love those thoughtful details like having separate cutouts for both 14.5 and 20mm cartridges to aid with rotating the barrel lock. Shows that a lot of consideration went into how this gun would be actually used.
I thought it slightly odd that they would be labelled and the the bolt would need swapping (along with the barrel, obviously) between 20mm and 14.5mm, considering that the 20mm case is supposed to be a re-necked 14.5mm. It's a bit weird that the extraction groove was changed (for the 20mm) when the head and rim size are apparently identical for both rounds.
@@dj1NM3 The 20x82 cartridge being used by Denel is a derivative of 20x82 Mauser, which is based on and a necked up & shortened case successor of 15x96 Mauser, both resulting from the development of the Mauser MG 151 autocannon. The 14.5x114 was developed basically at the same time(1938, before entering production in 1941) by the soviets, but to supercede the 12.7x108 in an anti-tank role. Dimensionally, the 14.5x114 case is about 2-3mm larger in diameter in multiple points down the length than the Mauser cases and has a 0.45mm thicker rim(which is, again, ~2mm larger in diameter). So, they definitely aren't based on the same case, both being pretty much clean sheet designs at basically the same time, but for different purposes, which resulted in the 14.5mm Soviet anti-tank cartridge featuring a larger case in all dimensions than the 15x96/20x82 Mauser autocannon cartridge. In the former case, velocity & kinetic energy are king, so a smaller diameter shell pushed by an overwhelming amount of propellant, while the 15/20mm Mauser airplane gun has a smaller case and larger shell, because velocity & kinetic energy are of low importance but explosives payload is king. Tl;dr - 14.5x114 and 15x96/20x82 are in fact completely different cartridges in both projectile size and case size, which is why they different parts & options are offered.
There is a game where you can use the NTW by yourself, carrying it around with the ability to aim down sight ONLY if prone or near an object. Carrying it, you (somehow) sprint only slightly faster than average walk speed, and firing this thing makes your camera shoot up into the sky, even with a muzzle brake (seems about right). My favourite part about it is the game-only 20x110 conversion which makes it have only 1 bullet, but increased power and penetration (even though you absolutely don't need it)
it is a gun that can be used and carried by a single soldier. Our Recce's generally use this in the bush solo. There's a video from the SANDF exhibition of a Recce moving with this guy (he's walking not running lol)
@@ToastyMozart A HUD that advanced would certainly change the norms of small arms handling in combat situations. At its most basic fundamental, the end goal is to get a projectile to go from the firearm in your hands and into the target, all else is fluid and able to be adjusted as technology makes achieving the end goal easier, simpler, and more intuitive. What we know as "perfect" shooting habits & techniques today are only "perfect" in this small snapshot of history, until technology changes this and makes hitting a target less and less dependent on human skill. And, frankly, that's the most important area of technological development - minimizing the amount of human involvement needed since we're mistake prone, independent, self aware, somewhat unpredictable creatures. I have a feeling that 'Master Chief' would more likely come to fruition as a semi-autonomous robot(I mean, look how far ahead we're talking about) rather than a specially selected human(that could potentially end up being a total head case...) put in a pseudo-biomech suit of sorts. Talk about making it easier to get a projectile to the target, the most minimal of risk.
The more I look into it the more I'm willing to defend Halo's futurism, though I think a lot of the high tech elements are a little underwhelming for something that is 500 years in our future though maybe the developers were only doing their best with what they knew 20 years ago when people were talking about the benefits of the "Information Age" best being tapped into at the public library or IRC.

*laughs in Rifle chambered for SABOT aiming at engine/turret ring*

*recoil throws him back 2 ft*
Ian: “That’s actually not bad at all”
That's actually the case. Painful recoil comes from improper posture and from recoil that has enough force to punch you in the shoulder but not enough force to slide your body like this one does. Now imagine if he had his back flat against that blast shield behind him. If he fired the gun then he is going to have a very bad time.
He’s training to duel wield hip fire them, in green armor
This reminds me of a friend of mine; 5'6" 110 lbs sopping wet with change in his pockets. He loved to buy up 460 Weatherby ammo in packages with one round missing (it only took one shot for most shooters to decide they didn't really need a 460 Weatherby) and plink away from the prone position. He didn't have a very high rate of fire, because he had to low crawl back to the line after each shot.
With that caliber you're not plinking away, you're pounding away.

Ian peels himself off the wall behind him: that's actually not that bad at all!
I love how the collar for the barrel you stick a shell into and use as a lever. That's hardcore.
My favourite part about it is the game-only 20x110 conversion which makes it have only 1 bullet, but increased power and penetration (even though you absolutely don't need it)
if you are talking about pf, it has horrid walkspeed
It's Phantom Forces :)

“What the hell am I supposed to do with this inside a covenant ship?”
Drop the enemy in one shot instead of 20. Hipfire works surprisingly well with power arms and a HUD.
