  • Day 8: Recurve Heartbreak. Intense Hunt.
With the recurve in hand, I hang a stand on the ultimate pinch. The bucks are moving and towards the end of the night, I find myself face to face, literally, with my target buck.

I know you're not one to produce a lesser product but I think we would all agree that just the gopro footage from that would have been sufficient Jared lol. Good luck man!

Haha. Judging by the likes on this comment it looks like you're not the only one! But obviously as you know I enjoy the quality video, it adds to the challenge without a doubt, but that's a good thing. With that being said though, I could see there being a tipping point in this quest where I rely on the GoPro footage ha. I can only let the camera beat me so many times, the deer do it enough!

What an awesome spot. With your shooting hole being so close, hopefully this will be a good reminder to always have your bow in hand when you hear them coming down that pinch. Wish it would have been different, but hopefully you get another opportunity. Awesome hunt

No doubt, it's just tough with filming. Holding the bow and operating the camera is challenging and especially with the recurve being so long, it'd likely get in the way or hit a branch or something while I'm following him. But it may work in certain spots, I'll have to do some practice runs.

Well done as a hunter. Great video work. Putting the 2 together alone is a difficulty level on the top shelf. If killing big buck is the objective, you no doubt can do that. If filming it alone to provide footage for others is the objective, you can do that also very well. It doesn't always happen. That is hunting. The extra variable of camera and camera work and bow(recurve to boot) is taking on a huge challenge. We greatly appreciate it. Lord bless.

Great videography Jared!!!! Oh so close 😢. Glad to see the stick and string in your hand 😃😃. Since you’re new to the recurve try this trick the next time you’re in the stand. Instead of hanging your bow from a limb or aftermarket hanger, tuck/slide your lower limb into the top of your rubber boot!!! It’s a hands free secure location that couldn’t be in a better place. Another thing that you might want to consider is an arrow holder. No way for the arrow to fall off the shelf if you bump your bow or hunt in a stiff breeze. Looking forward to seeing more of your upcoming hunts. Thanks for sharing 😃🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌

Unreal video Jared! Love this type of content! I’m personally a self filming hardo and have learned a few things from it. Personally I would have grabbed your bow just before he came into the opening and used one hand on your camera. The other option that would have been even easier is to move the camera to the scrape just before he got to the opening, grabbed your bow and relied on GoPro footage for those few steps in the opening before he go into your frame on the scrape. That way you could have shot when he got their! That being said the footage was amazing and hindsight is 20/20. I’ve been in your same shoes more times than I care to think about, it’s just a part of self filming. Good luck and keep up the great work!

Cool hunt it’s just harder to kill him with a recurve. Your footage is always great. I also hunt with recurves longbows and selfbows. Screwed up many times and I don’t even film. Just messed up last week with a new selfbow that I built this spring. Nice buck, hang in there with that Hoyt Satori. I’ve always wanted one.

Hey Jared, great video! Always enjoy watching your content. You may or may not know, but sony has an awesome feature I like to use filming hunts, especially self filming (Auto ISO). I seen you adjust your iso before the 10 came in, anyway you can set it to auto (set your min and max) and it will adjust it automatically for you. 1 less think to think about or mess with in the heat of the moment! Cheers

Hey man, thanks for that! I’ve used it some, and probably should more often. If I remember right, the one thing I didn’t like about it was it automatically changing a little too much for my liking throughout a shot when it wasn’t necessary. But I will probably use it a little more, you’re right in that anything you can eliminate, even if it only saves a couple seconds, is important. Thanks again!

Incredible heart pounding encounter. I guess in hindsight, maybe placing scent on the opposite side of the trail so he wouldn’t be facing your direction should you try that little trick again. I was really hoping you could pull it off on the first try and almost succeeded. Great hunt regardless of the outcome. Can’t wait for the next one with the recurve.

Awesome video and encounter better luck next time you did everything right but bid bucks get big for a reason they have a 6th sense especially that close

That one was so close the go pro footage of the shot would have been enough. Cameras have give many mature deer longer lives lol. That 7 point looked like an old mature deer to me. If you get another chance in that tree I would let the go pro get that shot footage. Great video looking forward to the next traditional update.

Thanks man. Yeah it would certainly be a sacrifice to the quality of footage, which would pain me, but there might be a point that's what it comes down to. Thanks for watching!

I have hunted and filmed with some of the best hunters around.. A friend of mine who guides, hunts and films in Illinios, introduced me to the go pro over the shoulder filming the filming. This is a really good perspective from the GO Pro. It's incredibly hard to pull it all together with him on to you, with any weapon. Really good footage. Played it back several times.

Amazing hunt!! That’s a dead deer all day if you weren’t self filming. Crazy how close he was. That in itself is a win 🏆

Your content is by far the best produced content on RUclips. I had a very similar situation happen to me on Nov 1. I love getting them close enough to kiss. You hunt just like me please don't stop producing I love it!!

Awesome hunt & great footage! Just a thought, would it be possible to put your scent on the other side of the path so when he stops to smell he’s facing the other direction? Just a thought, it may not work for a good shot?

What a great hunt man! It's more impressive to me that you got that close to an animal like that than if you would have killed him at 20-30 yards. Really enjoy all of your content and look forward to seeing what happens next. Good luck Jared!

Not a hater here. I am amazed at guys that worry more about getting footage rather than taking the shot when it’s presented. Too much time fiddling with camera. As a hunter I would much rather get the buck than the video. To each his own.
