  • 5 MINUTES LEFT, Capping Off An Incredible Season | Whitetail Bowhunting
The grind of bowhunting the late season is real, but so worth it. On the final night of the season, I head back to the same spot I've hunted the previous 5 evenings. Warmer weather and variable winds create a low expectation hunt for me. But as darkness creeps in, I look up to see my target buck slowly working my way.
I also discuss my experience with string jumping, the factors involved in this hunt, and what can be learned, if anything. Thank you for watching!

Thank you guys for watching and especially thanks to those that have subscribed and followed throughout, I appreciate all the support. I'm looking forward to 2023 and will have offseason videos coming soon. I'll discuss some brands I've been working on, property content, self filming videos, and more. If there is anything in particular you'd like to see, let me know. Thanks again and best of luck this year! Edit: Also, feel free to chime in on the string jumping discussion. Hindsight is 20/20 for me here but to me it really is a guessing game. I think discussions on topics like this are good for us to all keep learning.

Thank you so much for not giving up filming all together. I know creating all the content for us, the fans, is stressful and takes the fun out of hunting sometimes, but yours is top notch and so much appreciated. You and Bill Winke are the top two in my book, you guys just have a knack for explaining hunting like nobody else can. Again thanks for taking us along the hunts!

I think you made the best of what the situation had to offer. Head up, and semi relaxed, is definitely the best option you had, in my opinion. If you had held lower, anticipating the drop, and the deer didn’t drop at all, then you’re likely on a long and grueling track job. There’s so many scenarios that could have happened, you just never can be a hundred percent sure. Congrats on a great season! Looking forward to more great content. Take care and happy hunting!

Hey Jared thanks for all of your videos. They are so well filmed and very enjoyable. I had seen you on MW white tails before but heard you on a podcast recently, wired to hunt. So glad I came to check out your channel! The footage of all the wildlife, scenery, and deer interactions is so nice to watch. I like the relaxed and nature focused style your hunts have. Also the detailed interviews on your strategies are good to hear. Good luck in the future! Thanks!

depending on the temperature the speed of sound is between 761 and 1,061 feet/second. no bow can reach that speed and with all the pressure they have gone through it's no wonder you spined him. the farther and closer they are I always hold lower than normal. great job on your harvest and explanation Jared. almost time to chase the wily tom's now. thank you for your video education and work you do for us fellow hunters.

I’ve seen the same videos about head up Vs. head down. I’ve not noticed a difference. But I would not, in any situation, alert the deer first to get the head up. Head up and calm is different in my opinion. You’re a great shot and hunter, so I’m not pretending I know more, just my opinion. I enjoyed the content, and what an awesome season you had!

Awesome videos, Jared. Thank you for all the work you do self-filming and bringing us all along. As far as string-jumping, I agree that it’s a guessing game. That being said, I feel you did the correct thing here. An alert deer simply can’t drop as fast as a deer with their head down because they can’t use their head as leverage. They’re limited by gravity… something super important for all bow hunters to keep in mind.

Bow hunting is a passion and when you succeed especially in late season it’s bittersweet. I love bow hunting, and for me I’ve been told take gun and get over with. I’ve also been told you saw how many deer and didn’t get one. It’s not about killing a deer it’s the journey and ups and downs of chasing one specific deer and to be able to succeed after so many sits it’s special. Great buck Jared and especially a great season and what a way to end it.

Congratulations Jared. As I’ve mentioned several times before, you continue to prove that you’re one of the best bowhunters in the country. That being said, this new fad of everyone worrying if the deer’s head is up or down really irritates me. The key is to watch the deer’s ears. I learned years ago to never move when the deer’s ears are swiveled in my direction. Your buck was totally relaxed with his head down and ears forward and he likely wouldn’t have dropped at all when you shot. When you alerted him, both ears were aimed right at you, so he absolutely was going to drop.
One other thing…your videos are better with no music at all, like your first few videos.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Год назад +1

Thanks for the input Russell. I agree with you on the ears, those are an important thing to pay attention to, although it's not always a given either. I've went back and looked through a lot of the footage I have of shots on both bucks and does. I found does where they are what I would say is completely relaxed based on everything, including ear position, head down, and they still drop a lot. From what I've seen, I think that body position has to be factored in with alertness level. In my case here, I think "completely relaxed" is a pretty relative term based on all the other conditions- it certainly would not be the same as an early season hunt. Plus, it also appeared he smelled something he didn't like just 10-15 seconds before that, so that could also be factored in. My hunch is that he would have also dropped significantly had I shot him head down there. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the only thing I could do differently with hindsight (other than not shoot) is aim lower, which obviously comes with risks too. It just seems like it's one of those things where everyone can decide based on their experience, but there doesn't seem to be a one fits all strategy. And again, I think this is a different discussion at a different time of year and/or different weather conditions.

@@jaredmills You’re right about everything you just said. I have to remind myself that the shot was longer than what I’m accustomed to. The longest shot I’ve taken in the past 20 years was 17 yards, with the majority of my shots being within 10 yards. String jumping isn’t an issue for me. Maybe I’m wrong about the head up or head down thing.

@@jaredmills I think you nailed it, with the statement that it's a bit of a guessing game. Regardless of body position / alertness, one deer will drop, another won't. You shot for the lower third, which was all you can do. Much lower and you risk a brisket shot or miss.

@Russell Langworthy That's a good thing- keep it like that! I'm in a similar boat, this shot was 28 yards and was one of the longer ones for me on a buck

@waldguy That's kind of where I'm at based on my experience and all the shots I've seen through footage. Butt hopefully can continue to learn and make the guess as educated as possible

Awesome! Congratulations! I definitely would say you can’t blame yourself at all for that shot. It sucks when it happens, but sometimes it’s unavoidable especially late season on pressured deer! That is one awesome think about filming because then you can see exactly what happened and analyze it. It sucks, but the arrow went exactly where you would want it to, so you did your part.
