- Ancient city of medieval origin was the former headquarters of the Knights Templar dating back to the time of the Crusades. The knights of Christ, so called, were an important support for the crusades when the Jerusalem temple still existed.
Tomar retains an important monument from that period: the Convent of Christ and its later castle. Of equally historic interest is the medieval city center, as well as small churches and chapels scattered throughout the city.
