  • Hello! This time for my tips about Portugal I have decided to talk about the best things to visit in Tomar - one of my favourite towns in Portugal!
This is a special place: a small town with a walking friendly historic center, beautiful city parks along Nabão River, squares surrounded by churches... and - standing at the top of a hill - the AMAZING Convent of Christ of Tomar, UNESCO World Heritage since 1983.
I hope you enjoy learning everything about Tomar, and knowing about my TOP 5 places there! I am thinking about doing TOP 5's of other parts of Portugal as a monthly video, so let me know if there is some place special you would like to learn about.
If you wish to visit Tomar by public transportation, check out my other tips & tricks about trains ( • TRAVELING BY TRAIN IN ... ) and buses ( • TRAVELING BY BUS IN PO... ) - you will find all the needed information for reservations there and at the description box of each video.
I will keep on posting monthly videos about the best places to visit in Portugal so stay tuned!
    All the best!

I completely missed the matchbox museum! I certainly agree , it is a wonderful town just dripping in history. When I was there I stayed in a hostel where the owner was a font of information about Tomar and loved telling anyone and everyone about the town's history!

When people are willing to share their knowledge the city comes to life 😉🙏 yes the Matchbox museum is one of those places that often goes unnoticed and I think it's a fabulous place! I am glad you liked my suggestions! Maybe you go there again someday and have the opportunity to check out the Matchbox museum and the Convent with the Workshop and the Church! I believe they may even restore it sometime soon!

We were in Tomar in 2016 and from your video it's obvious we need to go again! We didn't see several of the things you showed in the video. Nicely done! We can't wait to come back to Portugal... hopefully this late summer. Keep up the good work and we hope to see you soon! Buzz and Henry

Muito obrigada 🙂 All of the places you mentioned are awesome. If any of your viewers are interested in Templar history & have a rental car... I would recommend a visit to castelo Almourol. If anyone is visiting Coimbra I would recommend walking tours from Go Walks Portugal 😊👍

Thanks Samantha 😁 I also guide tours in and to Tomar, thank you so much! Sure, Almourol is great and one of the places people can visit nearby, it makes part of my Knights Templar Tour together with Tomar (but as it isn't in Tomar, I didn't mention it. I will have the opportunity to show it in some other video)! Glad you liked the video, all the best!

Obrigado ...Very intersting & rich historical heritage Porto Cale has to offer everyone ....They say the kingdom of Portugal ( First king Alphonso Henrique in 12 th century ad) was created by the Templar Knights Order...I do not know if it is so...What I know is that people of Portugal fought bravely for the independence of the new country in 1385 led by king Joao I against spanish invasion at Aljubarena north of Lisboa,..

    • @GOWalksPortugal
      @GOWalksPortugal  3 года назад

Hello Daniel! Thanks for leaving a comment, I really appreciate that. Your interest for Portuguese History is good!!! There are some misconceptions there though:
      - King Afonso did exist, but some Historians believe he wasn't the same person History wanted us to believe (son of D Teresa)
      - There was no Portugal at the time, the Iberian Peninsula had many kingdoms and Condado Portucalense was established where the North area down to Coimbra is nowadays, so technically he didn't fight for the territory to the south: he took it over with brutal force and with the help of the Knights Templar that's true 😉
      - The Battle D João is associated with is called Aljubarrota 😊 Portugal won that battle mostly because England came for the rescue! I will soon do a video about Batalha Monastery and explain that part better! I hope you stay tuned for that, and if you're ever in Portugal I will be very happy to be your guide and tell you all about our History which I always liked a lot!
All the best and have a happy weekend!

@@GOWalksPortugal : Sorry , my mistake about Aljubarrota... I know King Joao I have built that place called Batalha : Batalia in romanian languege to commemorate the victory against the 30.000 spanish & french heavy cavalry under the command of king John ...Don Joao had only 7000 strong men and about 700 english longbows arches ( England helped Don Joao I due to the fact they waging 100 years war against France...In a nutshell: Portugal history and Romanian history have many similarities besides same latin background...It was a Requenquista against the maurs ( arabs- muslims) , fortunately succesful entreprise...We had to put on hold to the otoman expansion to the heart of Europe in the same period and after.... Best wishes from Bucharest and stay safe once more...Portugal is an open air museum, with brave people....Bless you all...

Alphonso Henrique is buried in Coimbra cathedral ( former capital of the kingdom of Portugal) , the birth place or portugal nation is Guimaraes where it is said D. Alphonso Henrique was baptized...What a splendid city Guimaraes is!!! The Castle and the Palace of Braganca dukes....☺☺☺☺I envy you...Coimbra...one of the oldest european University....

Let me add a bit of truth to this! Portugal means--Port of the Grail! Burgundy knights started this place (thanks to St,. Bernard of Clairvaux--the Templar Saint--read his 82 sermons from the Song of Songs)) to get away from the Church!--how ironic! And really Tomar is Tamar--offspring of the Black Virgin--the Widow's daughter--Jesus and Magdalene is Notre Dame--and the Mona Lisa--notice the streams behind her shoulders and the way the wound scarf across her heart is a continuation of stream and her look is one of Rosicrucian-Regenerated-Philosopher always of God's divine center! Da Vinci Code got it wrong--the offspring must also be regenerated within one's midst or depth's in God's Image (the Grail within), His Word. (Only that which comes down goes back up . . . ) And so, those 2 circular wells you shot--one with stairs going down--is symbolic of going within your depths at X marks the spot (heart center) and there one gives his will to the Spirit (the crooked serpent that wraps around you when you become one with your other self(Know thyself) to regenerate one by balancing the wet and the dry. And the head amidst the roots happens to us all when we get on the straight and narrow and are rooted to the tree of life and Wisdom (in our midst--read Genesis in a new way--they messed up by going in their MIDST to early to those rooted trees--headsup: those trees were not in that spiritual garden BUT IN THE MIDST OF THE EARTH!) when we are initiated and regenerated - which was and is the ancient mystery--in other words as St Augustine said. 'there has only been one religion since the beginning which is combining our consciousness with the Almighty's in His?Her Image the Word which was Sophia or Mary Magdalene to the Templars. Since they knew that we reincarnate to try the wheel of divine fortune many times--have to be one to know one - in this case a Templar Teutonic Knight Well that's enough for now! Hey, want to know the truth about the American Revolutionary War? How did my country America beat the SUPER POWER England. I almost have Russell Crowe interested in playing your General Howe. taking command . us is the story of how a few questing and engrailed Templar Master Masons RC operating in America gave the world the gift of Spiritual freedom! To find use the title above - all one word , no spaces or caps then dot us.
