I don't know why people laughed when he told this story. It wasn't funny, it was poignant. When I first saw a BSG commercial I thought Eddie was Native American and the FIRST thought I had was 'a Native American' is the Captain of the ship in this show about the future. We survived!' so this is very real to people who are of races that are not majorities. I think Mexican's far outweight Natives in number as well so for me I was really impressed when I thought they had cast an Indian
I think everybody on the show was afraid of Olmos... and they should... I mean, if he was to tell me: "¡Cadete, súbase en ese viper y proteja las naves coloniales!" I would be shooting down cylons before I even realized that had never been trained as a viper pilot. But honestly, the part about his friend's nephew saying "we're on the future" -I presume that's we latinos-, it actually gave me goosebumps, it is so true. ¡Edward es mi padre! :D
Oh, I thought the character of Chakotay was "total cliche" and "waste of script space" in addition to "biggest missed opportunity." Robert Beltran was wasted in the role.
It's the commitment, dedication and openness of all the people involved that created such a timeless show.
So say we all!
"Hey could you get me an Edward James Olmos look-alike please?" LOL
There are. Have you ever seen the pilot named Skulls?

@fffreddie You're forgetting Commander Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager =) The actor, Robert Beltran, is Mexican/Native American

@MsElise2009 Yeah, but the role of Chakotay was that of an Indian on Voyager.
Latios in Sci-Fi ! Wonderful ! Like black people in Star Trek..People of colour in the future as it should part of...Humankind !!
I didn't even notice that Adama was some sort of particular ethnicity. I don't even notice that shit - I wish more people were similar.
I didn't even realize he was latino until people started talking about it.
It's funny, because this same conversation would have happened 20 years ago if Olmos had decided to take the casting as Picard.
You forgot Dee. There was also one cylon.
In Star Trek you don't see latinos. But in Next Generation they did have American Indians.
Only Edward James Olmos is Admiral Adama, even if he's bright green with horns.
actully there were.
But isn't there an episode in the original series when they go back in time to nazi germany?

And then they found out it was set in the past...OOPS!
@anisangl1 dee was not a latina
Don't spoil to those who didn't watch it all :-)
he is kind of a scary guy, but he is cool.
