Gaeta is my favorite character in BSG. I think he's fascinating, and his series-long arc is impeccably written.

I was *so* sad when they killed him. He was my favorite too. It's a shame they didn't give the Juliani more to do, and hard to believe that Gaeta would not have made at least Captain rank. (Much like "forever" Ensign Kim on Voyager.

I loved seasons 3 and 4 the most. Season 1 was thrilling, but uneven. The actors had to acclimate themselves to the show's tone and their respective characters. Season 2 was solid progression of the narrative and situations faced by the fleet.
Season 3 and 4 were definitely a psychological exploration of the blurring line between technology and mankind, morality, religion vs. science, and the "human condition." The narrative did take some hits in season 3 and 4, but they contain a good majority of my favorite episodes.

I don't know who that lady at the end was, but I really do love it when a secondary is put in the center of the action because shit like that happens irl.

That's Jane Espenson (and WHOA, I'm just seeing this comment like 4 years later. Maybe it'll make it to you?)

Indeed. Espenson is most known for her writing on Buffy & she wrote the 10 part web series about Gaeta: "The Face Of The Enemy". It explained how Gaeta was duped into working for the Cylons on New Caprica and why Baltar considered him "complicit", i.e. the inside comments about "the very special pen".

Love that they talk about the writers. As one who wants to be paid for this eventually, I love to hear about this stuff.

Gaeta is figurative representation of Hephaestus from Greek mythology
Homeric poems also stated that Hephaestus had a special power to produce motion.
    1. Gaeta stated before his execution he wanted to be an architect/engineer. and "make restaurants shaped like food" (cylons shaped like humans metaphor, flying machines shaped like birds analogy).
    2. Hephaestus built automatons of metal to work for him as much as a blacksmith of the cyber-genesis
    3. Gaeta regretfully admits he thought/abandons a career in medicine (choosing to interact with tech/science over mortality)
    4. Gaeta mans the bellows "FTL" that must continually fanned/charged and then plots arrivals - striking the anvil (destination).
    5. Yet in traditional sense the blacksmith needs a steady base for balance, Gaeta losing his leg has no equilibrium and cannot function correctly (allies with Zarek)
    6. Because of his disability/deformity of his leg Gaeta/Hephaestus leaned on a walking stick.
7.The gnawing pain in his leg hurts no more at the end as much as Hephaestus cast from Olympus he was medically cared for by the Sinties and healed back to normal
    8. Hephaestus was kind-hearted and patient, but was always thinking about his parents' behavior (Adama/Roslin) and was very frustrated. Often driven by his grievance, (Gaius) and conflict.
    9. Hephaestus fathered a tribe called the Kaberoi as much as Gaeta as a leader led the mutiny into conflict.
    10. Gaeta's final comments to Gaius before execution about his wanting people "realize eventually, who I am". (Hephaestus lame god of fire and crafts and merging of materials together)..... allegorical craftsman of the eventual human cylon union.

To nit pick, I've always found it curious how Gaeta did not have pilot wings in the pilot episode, yet one show later his character has them. In an 'extended universe' point of view, maybe he was getting qualified etc to become a pilot. Yet, we never saw him in a cockpit. If the show took some of its inspiration from the US Navy model (a battlestar being a 'carrier in space), then Gaeta's would be, a minimum an 'officer-of-the-deck'. On a carrier a bridge officer doesn't neccessarily have to be a pilot, but most senior officer's (Capt, XO, CAG etc) usually are.But at the end of the day, it's just a great TV show and yes, I'm a fan nit picking.

If you're talking about the miniseries, I think we have to look at some things there with less scrutiny because they're trying things out. I watched it last night and they pronounce Gaeta's name differently or say "mark" instead of "carom". Boxey just straight up disappears from the series.

Season 4 overall is my least favourite season, I felt it lost it's momentum. But the Oath and Blood on the Scales alone I think makes up for that, those two episodes are fantastic.

Eick's fucking inelegant. Hardly just for this, but that was an unnecessary slam. Gary Burghoff played Radar wonderfully for a long time. A different character, a different time, a different type of show... Christ, I couldn't stand M*A*S*H sometimes, but never had a problem with Radar. SIgh... I don't like Eick.

    • @erentheca

How is that a slam of Gary Burghoff? If I were to say it's unrealistic for Michael Ironside to play the leading man in a romantic comedy, is that a slam on him? Different actors are suited for different roles - that's why a good casting director is important.
