When this film ended, I sat in my movie theatre seat not wanting to get up. The utter sadness of the inevitable overwhelmed me. Still today, this film moves me in a tragic sense. It's been in the top five of my favorite films since I first saw it. Time does not diminish its impact.
When I first saw this film, NO ONE in the theatre moved throughout the credits at the end until that song was over. I never saw that happen, before or since.
When I first put this movie on and then heard Cynthia Clawson sing this great hymn......It was like her voice called on the Holy Spirit......I became paralyzed ....feeling A presence. I still have this movie.....just to hear her sing Jesus is Calling. Thank you Cynthia.....where ever you may be.... What a Blessing ❤
My Mother and I saw this movie together. We were digging through our purses for Kleenex. It has become a touchstone in our lives. My son looked just like the little boy running in the field. We live in the old family home built in 1905. This movie has a special place in our hearts.
@@beverlyhayshouston2770 I am an old 74 year old guy and I cried all the way through it. this is the most moving rendition of this great hymn I believe I have ever heard. What joy it was to listen to it
I just discovered this movie. It's so beautiful! The hymn is one I'd never heard before. Now it's one of my favorites!! Thank you so much for posting...
This movie is nothing less than a masterpiece. The longing of this woman to go back to where her happiness was was acted with perfection by the great Geraldine Page. The dreamy scene where she's chasing her child through the field is so poignant because it reminds us that there was a time when he cherished his mother before he drifted away. She clings to those memories because she knows they're long gone.. Her expression in that car on the way back to her hell with that daughter in law puts a knife through your heart. I cannot watch this movie, one of my all time favorites, without crying my eyes out. I think of my precious Nana who never got to go back home to Texas to live out the rest of her life with her sisters. It hurts to know that so many old people have this kind of pain and longing to go home. This movie hits a nerve and this beautiful song has become one of my favorite hymns. If you haven't seen it, do it...she truly earned that Oscar.
Few people appreciate how achingly rare really good movies are. The Trip to Bountiful is one. It's about as close to perfect as you can get, ranking up there with classics like Casablanca. For once, an Oscar went to an actress who more than deserved it, another great rarity.
I love the way this hymn is used with the opening credits of the film and through out the film. Cynthia Clawson is wonderful. And the great Geraldine Page! One of my favorite actresses. I was so glad that she finally got her Oscar for "Trip to Bountiful."
When they are about to leave to go home and the daughter in law is nagging in her sing-song voice, Gerald ine Page (THIS WAS NOT IN THE SCRIPT) simply gave her a kiss on the cheek - a Christian kiss of peace. Spontaneous, sublime act that earned Page her academy award. The actress who plays the daughter in law was genuinely stunned as you see it on film.
Know exactly what you mean! Just sat there myself at the end of the motion picture.I sat memorized, as if glued to my seat. Love the experience of this movie! Bravo...
We are never saved until we make it into heaven. We can "get saved" and still not make it to heaven, by falling off 'the straight and narrow'. Given this is fact, it would seem the idea of "being saved" could be dangerous, because it gives a false sense of assuring, that will go/make it to heaven. We know Jesus said, few will find the way to eternal life. If more people spoke of how few will make it, maybe more would actually make it to heaven.
IVE FINALLY FOUND YOU WHO SINGS THIS SONG BEAUTIFULLY. I SAW THE MOVIE. "HOME TO BOUNTIFUL" MANY TIMES AND LOVED IT! MY DAY HAS BEEN MADE!! THANKU AGAIN💓
On the blessed night of my mother in law's passing, I was blessed enough to be taking care of her. I loved her so very much. She loved this hymn and so do I. This version was playing on her CD player softly as the candles flickered beside her picture of Jesus that was constantly in her room by her side. She quietly slipped away with the Spirit of God and I will forever think of her gentle loving spirit when I hear this. I think of her every day and thank her for the rest of eternity for the lessons she taught and the son she made and gave me. RIP Mamma, we miss you.
What a beautiful tribute to your mother-in-law. She is home now and smiling, knowing her son has such a wonderful woman in his life. God bless you & your family.
I’m so sorry for your loss of your sweet mother in law. I lost both of my parents and the pain of losing them is always there. This song was played at both of their funerals and is so very special. May God bless you and our loved ones
Most definitely. I'm listening to it this morning because I'm thinking about playing it for my son's Grandma who is lingering and very close to death. I'd love to give her beauty and peace.
It was this movie that introduced me to this song. It is still my favorite arrangement of the song. It always brings a tear to my eye. I live in a city called Bountiful.
I was granted the honor of seeing Cynthia Clawson, with only a piano accompanied her performance, at my church in 1995. There used to be an old commercial where a guy was sitting in profile and rock music blasted through speakers that looked like he was in a wind tunnel from the vibration of speakers. _That's_ what it was like sitting there 5 rows back. Her voice so pure but yet so strong! Geraldine Page embodied this role; no one could ever touch her performance; No One!
To me it's like a very well made horror movie. I can't stand feminists, but it's very frustrating to watch this story of how a woman's whole life was ruined by failing to stand up to bossy men, first her father, then her son. But i guess that's how things were in the south back then.
To my mind Cynthia Clawson's version of this old hymn (sung at the beginning and at the closing credits of the tremendous movie "A Trip to Bountiful" outshines all others. It's purity is like crystal.
The expression on her face as she leaves in the car - - there's something about it that's so finely nuanced and genuinely touching that can only be appreciated if you have watched all of her brilliant performance from the beginning of the film to its end.
Some years ago the late actor Sir Lawrence Olivier said that the greatest living actor known to him was Ms. Geraldine Page. I think he was correct and this movie beautifully demonstrates this. This was a subtle yet powerful performance. And this is a quiet little movie that I discovered accidentally some time back. I came across it by simply channel surfing. It's like traveling by car on the old 2 lane highways and stopping into a quaint and friendly little town you've never heard of. I stopped and I'm glad I did. Well, Ms. Page has long ago gone home and we are the poorer for it. Rest in peace. ✝️🙏
Yes. Excellent movie! The late Sir Lawrence Olivier once said of Geraldine Page that she was the greatest actor known to him. He thought she was the most talented performer ever to grace a screen. I wouldn't argue that.😊 I love this hymn too.
Same here. The film was perfectly cast...'Carrie Watts' was as easy to love as 'Jessie Mae' (Carlin Glynn) was easy to hate. Page's Oscar for best actress in a leading role was well-deserved. The closing scene was 'damp-eyed, lump-in-the throat' perfect. The only improvement to that ending that I can imagine would have been for a character named Charlie to have chased the car through the field until they stopped so Charlie could hug Mrs. Watts and then slapped Jessie Mae real hard. If so, Charlie would have an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role on his mantle.
She sings the most beautiful version of it won't rain always. I listen to this about 20 times a day. Such a peaceful message in that song and she conveys it so beautifully.
A gorgeous version of an old well-known hymn composed/written in 1880 by WILL L. THOMPSON. The church has sung it for 140 years! What a surprise it was to hear it in this touching mid-80s film.
Cynthia's voice and phrasing of this hymn is perfection. I'm so thankful I was able to watch this movie--not only for Geraldine's performance, but for this soul-strengthening music.
Such a beautiful version of this song. I've always loved it since I first heard it & the film is superb also. It infuriates me how badly that poor woman was treated! She lives in the SAME STATE as her beloved home, yet her worthless son & even more worthless daughter-in-law cannot bring her to visit?!!! I get that Texas is a huge state, but come on!!! Its a few hours drive! I can relate to this song because I want to go visit my childhood home, which also is in poor shape, before I leave this Earth. Alas, I can drive by it but that is all. The ghouls that own the property don't even care for the house, or live in it. I wish I could buy it back.
After nearly 30 years the symbolism finally hits me. He is running ahead of and away from his Mummy, as he will do all his life. And he must finally out-run her, but lets himself be caught for one more embrace. Thank you so much for posting this clip.
Running away is usually a reaction to some deep pain. I always see pain in Ludie's eyes, and of course in his mother's eyes, as she's unable to reach him and bond with him. I even see pain in Jessie Mae's eyes, especially when her voice cracks right at the end. Such a touching story all the way around.
Wonderful song an movie. Geraldine Page 3. I grew up in Pennsylvania foot hills of the Appalachians I would like to go home. This song captures my heart.
The haunting opening sequence can only be appreciated if you can embrace the spirit of the film that unlocks its significance. Amazing film and amazing film making.
Joanna, I could not agree more. Each of us has a "Bountiful" that represents a time and place in our lives that seemed idyllic. I've watched this movie many times and the ending is utterly perfect. Regardless of faith, this movie speaks to something that is within us all.
Joanna Wagner I so agree. I can also say from a lifetime of experience that His personality comes through when you read the Bible on your own, and learn about Him. He is very real.
Geraldine Page: the best actress in the English language. Surprisingly, the Best Actress Oscar for once was not awarded for Political Correctness, but rather for the most wonderful performance by an actress.
Bless you forever for putting this together so beautifully. We love that movie so much, and in large part because of this song. Horton Foote died recently, and his marvelous screen plays gave us some of the finest movies of the last half-century. "Tomorrow" (Robert Duvall), "Tender Mercies", "Trip to Bountiful", his lovely trilogy. Thank you again!
So glad Geraldine Page won the Best Actress Oscar for this film in 1985, two years before her death. Both Horton Foote and Gospel singer Cynthia Clawson have roots in Texas. I'm guessing those are Texas Bluebonnets as the film opens. Nice to hear cardinals again. They're primarily found in the eastern US and also eastern Texas.
What a beautiful song! How wonderful to know that He is tenderly watching and calling you and me. Very powerful Theology in it's simplicity. He's not just calling the good but sinners home. Think about what that means. He died for each and everyone of us and for all of our sins. What a magnificent thing for our Creator to do. Pure Love.
Anybody who hasn't seen the film...see it. Horton Foote, for those who don't know, was the guy who did the adaptation for To Kill a Mockingbird. I was lucky enough to meet him and talk to him for some time when I was on staff for a university film conference. Just the humblest, most decent guy.
He was also the author of the screenplay for "Tender Mercies" as well as the brother of the eminent historian of the south Shelby Foote. I too met him when I was a film student at NYU in the early 1980s.

If I could find this movie on DVD I would watch it every day, that's how much I love it. I just love how people communicated with each other back in the 40's and 50's, so personal and compassionate. I find today's times so cold and impersonal.
Yes. Outstanding film! The late Sir Lawrence Olivier once said of Geraldine Page that she was the greatest actor known to him. I agree. BTW I love this hymn.
2:32 That look is devastating. A longing unfulfilled is one of the worst things that can be imagined...but....you can never go "home" again. It's a painful thing when that realization intrudes upon you.
I've met Ms. Cynthia several times. She's a dear friend of a friend of mine, they knew each other in Kentucky. She is a sweet and kind lady with a very inventive church service! She's in Houston now.
My favorite hymn. And the most beautiful rendition I have ever heard. Just picked it out on the piano. Key of G. Easy to learn. One of the best movies ever, too. I miss Geraldine Page.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (July 3), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. It is #608 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
I enjoyed this movie so many years ago. Cynthia Clawson is a marvelous vocalists, and this is a beuatiful hymn. You never hear it sung in church anymore. too bad.
A much loved song that reminds me of my youth. In Sunday worship this is one of the songs they played to come to the altar. This and Just As I am touched people and even me at 10 yrs old. Still a much loved favorite.
I would watch this at a time in my life that I longed to be "home," which was not where I was at that time. And the boy looked like my son, then. The lead's search for home, mine. I divorced a drug-addicted wife, but lost my kids in the divorce -- what a messed up system we have! Now, despite losses, I am more at peace. But, it came, not from persons, but from the Person ... and that I am at "home" with Him, Jesus.
@MiddleDeeping Softly and tenderly jesus Is calling, "enjoy yourself while you can; one of these days your eyeballs are going to ignite!" Oh! gentle jesus, meek and mild! How wonderful it is to be loved by you.

I got to watch that movie again, it's one of my favorites.
If I could find this movie on DVD I would watch it every day, that's how much I love it. I just love how people communicated with each other back in the 40's and 50's, so personal and compassionate. I find today's times so cold and impersonal.
Ask your library to purchase it. Persuade them by telling them about the Oscar.
Geraldine page was one of the greatest actors of all times. The movie was wonderful
Yes. Outstanding film! The late Sir Lawrence Olivier once said of Geraldine Page that she was the greatest actor known to him. I agree. BTW I love this hymn.
The music and lyrics are so beautiful...
Beautiful opening to a very good story, very moving!!
love this. but too sad. can't go home again. can't go there emotionally.
2:32 That look is devastating. A longing unfulfilled is one of the worst things that can be imagined...but....you can never go "home" again. It's a painful thing when that realization intrudes upon you.
nostalgiajim well put! I've always been haunted by that look on her face too.
God has used this music to reach into my heart..........
Cynthia Clawson, a wonderful person I was fortunate enough to call my friend.
This hymn and this movie make me cry.
Very moving. Able to melt the heart of stone. The voice and the music is divine.
I've met Ms. Cynthia several times. She's a dear friend of a friend of mine, they knew each other in Kentucky. She is a sweet and kind lady with a very inventive church service! She's in Houston now.
Beautiful song and also loved the movie
Beautiful Song!!!Which ill never forget!!!!
My favorite hymn. And the most beautiful rendition I have ever heard. Just picked it out on the piano. Key of G. Easy to learn. One of the best movies ever, too. I miss Geraldine Page.
My favorite hymn, on of my favorite actresses and movies, Beautiful opening scene. Thank you for posting.
I love this hymn, but really love the person who sang this!
Just awesome - both the song and the movie.

I saw the movie. Cynthia Clawson's version of that song is incredible.
RIP John Heard You are missed and so loved.
Yes. 💝
@MiddleDeeping
Softly and tenderly jesus Is calling, "enjoy yourself while you can; one of these days your eyeballs are going to ignite!"
