5XChamps I totally agree with you! I’d thought that Whoopi was robbed as her performance in the Color Purple was just astounding. But then I watched Geraldine Page in ‘ A Trip to Bountiful’ for the first time yesterday and I was just totally blown away by her performance in that role. The subtlety, the nuances, the timing, the facial expressions. It was acting for an Actors clinic. I could watch her in that film over and over again and never tire of any of her scenes.

Miss Page was truly a national treasure, from her role in "Day of the Locust" as Big Sister, to the icy Eve in Woody Allen's "Interiors" and to Mrs. Watts in Trip to Bountiful", and so many more, she has graced us with her intelligence, her heart and her talent, and I am so gratwful for her!

During the telecast in 86, I was really pissed that Whoopie lost - she gave an awesome performance. Never saw Page's work. About 7 years ago, I started a quest to watch all competitive Oscar noms and win and put this off the first 4 years because it just seemed "ehhhh". I finally watched it and have watched it 6 times since the first time. It is a simple movie with a simple story told so beautifully, could kick myself for not watching and enjoying earlier. Carrie Watts as played by Page is everybody's older mother and grandmother. Page plays the role brilliantly and can move people to tears with her performance. And the really funny thing is she isn't the only standout in the cast - they all are really perfect performance that blend together perfectly. If you have not seen this film (doubtful) you need to find and view it. best 2 hours of your life.

I was a 21 y/o enlisted man who loved movies in 85 and still do. I saw The Color Purple several times and A Trip To Bountiful, Sweet Dreams and Agnes of God, one time each, with my late partner. We lived in San Diego. We'd go to movie theater in Mission Valley.
I wanted Whoppie Goldberg to win. On the other hand I couldn't deny that the performances by Anne Bancroft, Geraldine Page, and Jessica Lange were Oscar worthy too.
Somehow I've never seen Sweet Bird of Youth but will watch it soon.
Bette Davis said during an interview that actors discover that may not when the Oscar for the role with the most Oscar buzz. She didn't win for Of Human Bondage, All About Eve or Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.
Ms. Page seemed like a very genuinely humble and grateful actress.

Incredible movie and incredible performance by yes, the greatest actress in the English language. So sad she died that year. While Whoopi deserved an Academy Award also, Geraldine Page had put in a career of Academy Award performances. She absolutely deserved the award for Trip To Bountiful. Look who's with Jon Voight.

I was just watching another magnificent performance by an actress, Beulah Bondi as Martha Corinne in The Waltons episode "The Conflict," and thought of this film. In both roles, the actress had to tread a fine line between being an annoying, extraneous, and sometimes mean old woman and being vulnerable to an overwhelming sense of loss. Watching veterans pull it off is both touching and inspiring. Glad to see such talent recognized (Bondi won an Emmy for a later Waltons episode playing the same character. Wonderful, wonderful to watch.)
