Despite the fact that many Vietnam veterans continue to hate Ms. Fonda for the whole infamous "Hanoi Jane" incident, there can be no doubt that she gave a great performance in 'Coming Home', easily the best of the five that were nominated. My heroine, Jane Fonda, for SO MANY REASONS. I have age-related hearing loss just starting, so this was such a powerful acceptance speech, what an IMPORTANT FILM. One of the reasons I so admire her is that she has always jumped into the pool of life and lived it 200%, gone through so many phases and even in her eighties, continues to be so inspiring! Love Jane! MADGE ROY
Hands down, Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata, the crown jewel of her acting career. This is no shade on the other wonderful actresses nominated. All richly deserving.
Jane really believed in this film. The money people couldn’t see an audience paying money for a subject everyone was trying to forget. Not Jane - the soldiers coming home were never really welcomed because the war was not winnable or popular . Jane didn’t care about that . Whether the war was a righteous one and Jane believed it wasn’t as do most people now do, she wasn’t going to let these soldiers contribution to their country be swept under the rug . What these boys gave was their peace of mind ( PTSD) limbs , and many gave their lives. Jane may have been against the war but she was for the soldiers who gave to their country. She put her money , time , career in to making sure this film got made. It was her passion. Geraldine Page gave a performance of a lifetime but she had enough talent for two lifetimes and rightfully won fo “ trip to Bountiful “ I believe interiors and trip to bountiful were master class acting performances . Pure genius

Damn that was Clayburgh's... she was amazing in An Unmarried Woman. I loved Geraldine Pages performance in Interiors also but it was incredibly short and more appropriate to be in the supporting category.
Back then these women did not attend this event as a walking advertisement for some dressmaker. The whole fashion shtick has become a major distraction and completely irrelevant to what is really important -- the acting. BTW, I think Shirley MacLaine looks fantastic in that full length black dress. Simple & elegant.
I’m sorry to inform you that this has always been a thing in Hollywood, maybe it wasn’t as acknowledged back then, but the designer culture has always existed
Noe Berengena designer culture always existed! Some of the most famous Oscar dresses were from this era or earlier. You even mention Shirley MacLaine's dress in your own comment so clearly you are paying attention to the fashion.
All of the Best Actress Nominees of 1978 except for Jill Clayburgh have won at least 1 Oscar: Jane Fonda: Klute and Coming Home Geraldine Page: The Trip to Bountiful Ellen Burstyn: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore Ingrid Bergman: Gaslight, Anastasia, and Murder on the Orient Express
Batman1989King If Bertolucci's "Luna" had been better received by critics maybe she would have gotten hers in the 1980 Ceremony. Her work in that movie was brilliant, too bad the controversy overshadowed it.
That was an outstanding performance and the movie moved me a lot. Igot to see it during the Lumière festival in Lyon because no one knows Hal Ashby in France which is a pity. Very simple and breathtaking at the same time.
I remember watching in TV this scene of 1979, I did not speak English at the time, I had taken a course of the language and tested my learning by listening Jane Fonda, got some phrases at the beginning, then she started to speak very fast for me, and I did not get a single word and I got depressed. Haha! I know now, 40 years later, that she was thanking people in sequence. Catching last names is a hard part for a language learner, because most of them are words that the learner has never heard.
I actually got to be on the set of 'Coming Home' when they filmed at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey, California in 1977. A testament to the communal open feeling created by director Hal Ashby. That would never happen today. Jane was very cool and Jon Voight honestly lived that role, I'll tell you. They were both very dedicated to doing a great job.
Perfeita. Esta Deus criou pessoalmente.
I used to use a great guy, ex-Marine, as a substitute teacher for high school kids, who never forgave Jane Fonda for being pictured sitting seductively on a bomb while in Vietnam. Apparently it was thought of us making light of the war. She later explained that she was being taken here and there and everywhere on a junket, and it was a last-minute request that she posed with the bomb. It’s just sad that somebody who devoted so much to, such a film couldn’t redeem herself in his eyes. I don’t mean to make him sound bad because he was a really great guy and was terrific with the kids but that’s how much war experiences can make people feel vulnerable. I’m saying this in 2024 Edward feels like a vulnerable time, because that may not happen tomorrow, there seem to be forces that may be drawing the worldinto an extremely serious and widespread conflict. I retired in 2018, but it was always a sense of anguish for me in teaching trying to get across to students have a glorifying of war and military dominance is horribly misleading. So many of the boys talked like they’d be so willing to go trouts the enemy, not facing that they could not only not return, but return extremely damaged. I hope to heaven, they don’t get to find out.
Jon Feld I love Jill so much as well! ❤️ I have followed her for years! She is absolutely fantastic, so glad I got a glimpse of her when Jane Fonda won!! 👏 I wish I could go back in time and congratulate Jill in all she had done 🌸

Jane Fonda such a beautiful woman and great actress my favorite
She's incredible, I could listen to her talk all day 😍
Great acceptance speech.
Back then these women did not attend this event as a walking advertisement for some dressmaker. The whole fashion shtick has become a major distraction and completely irrelevant to what is really important -- the acting. BTW, I think Shirley MacLaine looks fantastic in that full length black dress. Simple & elegant.
Well Said!!!!!
I totally agree!!! So much advertising and branding of it all these days.
Wow, very well said. And so true.
Jane Fonda. My Light and my guide to be a good person.
I can't believe what a strong lineup this was back in 1978--glory years.
My god, Shirley MacLaine was absolutely stunning,
All of the Best Actress Nominees of 1978 except for Jill Clayburgh have won at least 1 Oscar:
Jane Fonda: Klute and Coming Home
Geraldine Page: The Trip to Bountiful
Ellen Burstyn: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Ingrid Bergman: Gaslight, Anastasia, and Murder on the Orient Express
Batman1989King If Bertolucci's "Luna" had been better received by critics maybe she would have gotten hers in the 1980 Ceremony. Her work in that movie was brilliant, too bad the controversy overshadowed it.
You can see the influence the Farrah Fawcett hairdo had at this time….big hair with lots of curl & bounce.
Beautiful video, beautiful moment in so many ways.
Jane is one of the greatest gifts....
Gorgeous Jane Fonda great speech
Jane's dress is so stunningly beautiful
It has always been Jane vs Jill in here, which is funny because I think Ingrid (and the un-nominated Liv Ullmann) are better than everyone else
Brilliant , there is no doubt she worked her heart out ... Bravo Miss Fonda!
Jane Fonda has great acting in Coming Home.
That dress is beautiful.
Excellent actress. Don’t confuse her narcissism for caring.
One of the best if not the best acceptance speech I've ever seen
She was way ahead of curve. As per usual. Love her.
Hi Anna hope you’re okay?
