Hong Kong as a very fascinating transport system. From the unique trams, to the metro that doubles as a suburban railway network, and a compley bus system. You can tell there has been great thought put into all the transport infrastructure.
There seems to be a very well developed public transport system in Hongkong! At least 50% of the vehicles I saw in this video were busses or other trams. Very few cars, bikes, mopeds and parking spots!
HK got one of the very few public transport systems in the world that are for-profit and (nearly) dependent of government subsidies, that's some achievement that no one cares lol
its just hong kongs olde rbuildings/architecual style. incredibly clean streets and surprisingly like pretty normal inside or on the street level. they jus look sorta old and funky. vastly different than American buildings where ei live, but they r the equivalent of like nyc walkups
I was there on vacation a couple of weeks ago and rode the tram a lot from Happy Valley and heading Westward! It got me to where I needed to go really cheap! It's only been two weeks since I've been there, and I already miss Hong Kong a lot!
Nice video! I am a tram fan without having been to Hong Kong. It is so clear from the video to make acquaintance with the tram route as well as the beautiful scenery. Anyway, thanks a lot !
Wow! This video is a little scary! People cross the streets in the middle of traffic, and with this fast-paced video, it looks like an accident is imminent. I realized that both trams and buses have two floors. And I imagine that this was caused by English influence, from the days when Hong Kong was a colony of the Land of the Queen. I noticed that Hong Kong is very vertical and the streets seem cramped, with bus stops located on "islands" in the middle of the asphalt. It looks quite dangerous. Of course, I know that the video is accelerated in time lapse.
I first rode the Hong Kong trams on Saturday,January 25,1975 when I was in the U.S.Navy on my 5th. Navy cruise which was my 1st. Westpac Cruise. I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 which was out of San Diego at that time. The Hong Kong tramways is a great way to see the city of Hong Kong itself and is very affordable. I rode the Hong Kong tramways in late 1984 & 1986 when on Navy liberty in Hong Kong. I also rode the double decker Star ferry over to & from Kowloon. I rode to Shung Shui which was the last stop on the Kowloon-Canton Railway before crossing into Red China. I seen the boundary which is a river that divided the New Territories from Red China.
Loads of thanks for this amazing video! Really brings back memories, Trouble is that it looks like a Grand Prix race throughout, due to the speed up time lapse. Great job otherwise!
Those trams were old when I lived there 30-odd years ago in the eighties! Lot less traffic than I remember - and I can't see many maxibuses. The taxis look exactly the saem though! Used to live in Lyemun Barracxks above Shau Kei Wan - and the squealing from the trams as they drove round the turning loop used to sound all through the day and night. What with that and the aircraft taking off from Kai Tak and over Lyemun Gap, almost directly over the barracks .... it all made for a very noisy experience.
At first I thought the Tram Operator was a "Speed-Demon" then I realized you had it on a Time lapsed video. Very well done. I've ever been to HK, my Great Uncle was, but that was in 1935, Yangtze River Patrol, US Navy, Greetings from Iowa, USA! :o)
Phewww!! I'm worn out!! Wonderful ride. I love the way that HK has kept the old double decker tram design, even the newer ones look similar, though they have rounded off the corners somewhat.
I thought it's from 90s when I saw it first time, that dirty buildings, closed shops, airconditioners randomly on walls etc...it looks like wild 90s in my country. :-D
the streets r still super clean lol, if u look most those shops look pretty nice and modern. its more just older buildings and the architectural style of asia or china. very organized and clean mess.
Thanks, thats what I was trying to do! The next step would be to make a virtual reality video (with those goggles you wear) to make you feel like you are REALLY there! I'm sure that is coming in the not too distant future!
What an awesome video!!! I always like youre video's but this one is really very nice :-) I want to go to Hong Kong asap. For now good luck with youre videos !
Simon Kefas : It looked pretty similar 45 years ago. I lived there for a few years whilst my dad moved the Post Office from Pedder St (one of those stops) to the current building next to the Star Ferry. A few more tall buildings, and different cars. I'm not sure the tram tracks were on concrete (I may be mistaken), but the rest of the scenery was very familiar, so not a lot different. Less crowds at the stops than I remember. Hong Kong chinese dont "form an orderly queue", its first on gets a seat.
The tram looked the same 50 years ago (1968) , less advertisement graphic on tram side, and warning sounds besides Ding Ding now with normal car alarm sound also; and a safety device beneath the train has been removed away, a few trains have interior changed and planning to install air conditioners in some.
Thanks for the upload. I'll be in Hong Kong in April 2018 so will plan to take a ride on a couple of the double decker trams (and old one and a newer one).
OMG, i think i said OO and jumped about 900 times, a few swear words when we almost hit a purple tram in the rear and my heart nearly stopped as 500 residents crossed the road in one go and nearly got squished. Need a heart tablet now. Was lovely to see the terminus tbh, i was expecting a bus station, that was simple, fast and effective.
I think and hope they won’t rip out the system anytime soon. There has been talk of replacing it or scrapping it but there was so much backlash. People love the double decker trams!!
Great video. Including all the station names was excellent. I was trying to visualise the map you showed but I got 'lost' about 1/4 of the way through. The epilogue was a nice touch, too. I'm not sure what the 'EXCLUSIVE' part was. Does that just mean no one has done it before? If it gets you more views I won't complain. I'll share it.
I didn't realize until I was making the video that there are two tram maps, one is an Eastbound map and ones a Westbound map. The one I put in the video is the Westbound map, when it should have been the Eastbound map (which I don't have any footage for). hktramways.com/images/googleMap/HK-tram-route-map-EB.pdf This is the correct map for the direction of travel.
Yes, on April 6, 2017 a double decker tram hit a bus and tipped over. www.thestar.com.my/news/regional/2017/04/06/11-injured-after-hong-kong-tram-tips-over/
i think theyre designed to not tip over XD. There is a reason why people are not allowed to stand on the second level. However, if the driver decides to speed or turn vigorously, then thats another situation.
Addison Shiu I was just in Hong Kong a couple weeks ago and rode the new line and it's fantastic! I took some footage so let see if I get around to posting a video of it.

This is the first time I've seen Hong Kong at street level...The traffic is much better than I expected honestly! Probably thanks to the trams.

You need to pay alot of tax if you want a car so most hong kong people don't get one
@@ThePocketTravellerKr Nonsense. It's the parking space that's so problematic, not the tax.
other than the HKT i think, most transport companies are at least part of/involved in property development
Not sure how the city can look really clean and really dirty at the same time
It's just that the buildings are old, most places on Hong Kong Island are extremely clean, same can't be said for Kowloon though

This is a very valuable souvenir for anyone who loves / loved the HKT!

super system, they look just like the 3foot6 gauge double-decker trams used all over the Birmingham and Black Country area in England until the 50's
And those jerks are trying to scrap it... we hongkongers need to protect our treasure!
I hope the Hong Kong double decker tram stays forever!

This is so chaotic, but so efficient at the same time
The trams used to be on the sea side, everything you see on the left is all new that are filled throughout the past decades.
Loads of thanks for this amazing video! Really brings back memories, Trouble is that it looks like a Grand Prix race throughout, due to the speed up time lapse. Great job otherwise!
Never seen double-decker trams to be honest ... brilliant idea!
I wouldn't construct a double deck narrow-gauge tram, honestly. The hight is five times the gauge-width.
They sort of look like milenium balloon on trams from Blackpool heritage tram fleet. Great video.
