    The final uphill grade on the tram line is too steep for conventional rail train. The tram driver positions the tram uphill from the cable tractor. The two vehicles do no connect. The tram driver remotely controls the tractor which pushes the tram uphill. The tractor operates as a conventional funicular. Gravity holds the vehicles together. On the way down, the tractor brakes the tram.

      I think that when the trams are in "funicular" mode they're not controlled by the drivers, when the downhill tram arrives and sets against the ram carriage, the driver sends a "ready" signal to a control room uphill, if the descending tram has sent the ready signal as well the ram carriages are started, when trams stop at the intermediate station, they will send ready signal when they're done with passengers, when the tram arrives downhill the control room waits for the ready signal from the next tram

    • @andredescheemaecker5865
      @andredescheemaecker5865 7 лет назад +21

      You are right, the trams are indeed connected. The descending tram 'pushes' the ascending tram (or vice verso) with the help of the 2 carts which are connected by the cable in the middle.
      We did this trip twice when in Trieste, there's an amazing cave of more than 110 meters high at the end.

    What a beautiful city, and cool tram.
    Video: I can see how much work went into it, stopping off at multiple stops to make what looks like a continuous video. Also, no irritating music drowning out the ambient sound. A+

    This tram is unique in Europe. The cars are of this shape because they reflect the originale design of the first cars. The "jacuzzi" is nothing more than a counterweight downstream where a steel cable 45mm thick is fixed, upstream there is another "jacuzzi" that will accompany the car that goes down. The stretch of the funicular has a slope of 25%... one tram goes up and the other goes down. The original project of the early 1900s was realized by Prince Maximilian of Austria, who later died in Messico. Now, its many years stopped.... They have no money (municipality, region, state) to repair the railway and
    modernise and bring it into practice by following State/European directives.... The citizen of Trieste isnt thery happy for this.

    Καταπληκτικό! Είστε καταπληκτικοί! Όμως και εμείς στην Ελλάδα είχαμε πλειάδα αστικών σιδηροδρόμων / light rails οι οποίοι εισέρχονταν σε αστικά τοπία (Ναύπλιο, Καλαμάτα, Μεσολόγγι, Βόλος και αλλού). Εξ αυτών το πιο αξιόλογο δίκτυο ήταν αυτό του Βόλου διότι ως light rail εξυπηρετούσε σε ολόκληρο το μήκος (παραλιακό μέτωπο) την πόλη του Βόλου και τα προάστια (Αγριά και Κάτω Λεχώνια) και στη συνέχεια ανηφόριζε προς το Πήλιο, το ιστορικό βουνό των Κενταύρων ως σιδηρόδρομος. Το μοναδικό αυτής της περίπτωσης είναι ότι η γραμμή έχει πλάτος μόνον 60 εκ. Η γραμμή λειτουργούσε από το 1893 έως το 1971 και μετά σταμάτησε. Από το 1996 έχει επαναλειτουργήσει μόνον στο ορεινό τμήμα (Άνω Λεχώνια - Μηλιές) ενώ στο αστικό, το οποίο θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να λειτουργεί ως light rail παραμένει εκτός λειτουργίας. Από το 2017 τη λειτουργία του ελληνικού σιδηροδρομικού δικτύου την έχει αναλάβει μια θυγατρική εταιρία της FSI, η "Trainose". Όμως η Trainose δεν δείχνει κανένα ενδιαφέρον. Προσπαθώ να βρω συμπαραστάτες από χώρες στις οποίες σέβονται και αγαπούν τον σιδηρόδρομο για να λειτουργήσει και το αστικό τμήμα ως light rail μονής γραμμής με ελατηριωτές διασταυρώσεις. Θα μας βοηθήσετε;

    I don't manage to see if there is an overhead wire on the slope. The current collector is constantly up, maybe even at its topmost position. But does that meant that the tramway actually contributes with its own traction, or is it entirely pushed by the car behind, and electricity is only needed for the driver's espresso machine? 🤔

    There are two extra cars in the system connected with a cable, so the uphill and downhill trams have to move at the same time as long as they are hooked up. The trams are a counterweight to each other so not much energy is needed to move the system: The trams are driven by their own power. The extra cars do probably not have engines, they just act to grip the cable. You can see that the cable is present only on the uphill side, not on the downhill side. The cables never cross and a tram does not ever need to pass over a cable.

    Good video. The most interesting technical detail is probably the switch in the valley station and the mountain station. There the car drives over the rope that normally lies above the rails. I would have liked to see this technical detail more visible. Apparently the cable is pinched and the car then drives over it.

    • @cochazza
      @cochazza 2 года назад

      Kind of: at the uphill station, the balancing system that makes the cable slide from the ascending track to the descending track is placed underground, so the cabs can simply drive over it without really "crossing" the cable. There is a stop right there so you can walk around a bit and see the machinery in action quite clearly. It is also a nice panoramic spot on the city overlooked by an old elegant castle-like villa on the top of the hill

    Fascinating! I love both the "carrier" system and the fact that this funicular uses a "single-ended" rather than "looped" cable. The tilted concave rollers (I'm assuming mounted on ball bearings) are interesting; much less drag and wear than using bushings or sleeves.

    Tendrá frenos eléctricos o de aire ?

    That thingy in front is meant for evening-out the forces at the tow-point so that 350kmh trains can save propulsion(electric, diesel, ... steam-pneumatics) and have higher friction-grip and have better aerodynamics and... high-current ratio-with low-voltage electric DC motors can reverse. Don't use AC motors. Many water pump motors to a single wheel shaft is cheaper. Suspicious application.

      Unfortunately there was a front-end collision between two trams in August 2016. The service has not been restored yet...

    How can the tramway cross over the cable?

    • @eklhaft4531
      @eklhaft4531 6 лет назад

      There is a small gap in the rail track where the cable passes through. Look at 2:32
