- By request. The full, unedited version of The Heavy's "How You Like Me Now." After the broadcast performance, Dave asked the band to do it again. Their second version was cut to a commercial break. Here's the full version without the break.
The Heavy are friggin great. I have this CD and play it in the car A LOT.
I was in the audience. Great performance.
You know made in when youre on letterman. You know youre a star when he asked for an encore. This is legendary
Couldn't have said it better.
I spent forever looking for the full version. This was towards the tail end of Letterman on Late Night and I don’t recall him ever asking a band to keep going. This is a great tune and The Heavy just crushed it. Love their joy and surprise to being asked to keep it going. The audience reaction is terrific. Historic.
Every time I hear this song I talk about Letterman telling them to do an encore.
I'm stunned: terrific performance!!!
" I don’t recall him ever asking a band to keep going. "
He did with Vintage Trouble as well.
U can even hear the audio engineer already turn down the reverbs, when he started singing its kinda dry .... David took everyone by suprised by asking them to have another go.😂 ... I ❤ it too
I think they said this was the only time. Saw it the night it was on, was shocked he asked
That's the first time I have seen Dave ask for an encore of a song!
He added in the Paul Schaffer orchestra on that one!
Check out the early on James Brown show....Dave went nuts....really, he just let JB take over....it was fantastic of course.
Same dude! You know you've just seen something special when Dave does that!
Imagine having that honour 🤩
He did it twice.
Once here and once when they played What makes a Good Man many years later.
Absolutely beautiful moment in TV and live music. An encore on Letterman (never happened before). The Heavy BROUGHT IT. The audience knew it. Historic.
that wasn't an encore, that was a 'Do it again! Do it again!' lol
I always loved when you could tell Dave really enjoyed the musical guests!
Yup. And the reason I don't like watching Fallon. Every single guest is the best ever. He thinks he is being nice. I find it disingenuous. Dave ruled.
@@ClaytonMacleod that big head Dave sucks too always ironic with his guest bahhhh don’t have much creative conversation just same ironic shit game is cool but then is like .............. wte
👀 Clayton,
👃🏽
👅 How you like Cesar now?
Dave’s favourite by far was Stone Temple Pilots.
I remember Dave being really into White Zombie
I love the drummer's excited expression when Letterman tells them to play it again. :)
Not much of an expression, just hah
@@canlib even "hah" is an expression
This dude drums his way to heaven
That’s my Son - I was there when this took place. A truly unforgettable night 🙏
@@frankellul613 I saw them play at the Sixth & I in DC after this show and it was awesome. They weren't as big yet so I hung around after the show and got to meet them, made it a point to tell them how amazing they were on Letterman and even told Chris that the look of pure excitement / joy on his face (4:36 in the video) was just fantastic to watch. He said the whole thing was surreal and was really appreciative. Fantastic group of guys and still my favorite band.
He trusts his voice no ear buds in
I work with a bunch of guys who never heard this song before, and today I played it for them. Man the hole work place was jamming to it. Now I can't get them to stop listening to it... which is not a bad thing.
So they like it now?
@derp hilarious thanks
I always feel credit is due when I get a good laugh. @derp credit
Dang. That's music right there, folks. Real horns and everything. Dave went crazy for these guys and deservedly so.
Now that is a great performance 👏
A great English band😉
Still underrated band
I remember this show like it was yesterday. What a song! ... Dave knew it was special too, by asking the Heavy to "play it some more, play it again" ... that was a great rock and roll moment.
One of the best performances on whole Letterman's career and arguably one of the best performances on television all the nuances etched in time you just want to keep watching that one particular show
I can't believe it's been 10 years since that performance. Classic!
I can't believe that The Heavy never became absolutely massive....
I can't believe it that it's been 10 years either.
@@navnig I agree, they deserved to be bigger than they are
I'll never forget that night, Conan was having his big feud with NBC and I was glued to the tv every night to watch. He went to commercial and I flipped over to Letterman just in time to see The Heavy. I thought the song was awesome but when Letterman told them to play it again I was floored. I've been watching Letterman since I was a little kid and had never seen him do anything like that, really was something special.
That was some serious drumming
That’s my boy ❤
Every now and then I come back to see this video. I happen to see the show the night this aired and it was impressive. This is one of the best live audience performances ever.
I hadn't seen the full performance til now. HANDS DOWN, THE BEST EVER ON LETTERMAN!! ❤❤❤❤
Finally someone gives him an answer
Love this band!
Dap Kings rule!! King of the horn section!!
i saw this live on tv and was surprised when dave asked if they could play again--i had never seen him do that before
Heard this on the KIA Sorento ad. Got hooked.
God Damn! I say I say God Damn!! That was GOOD!! Dave Loved Them!!!! Me too!
This version was not available for years. (Lawyers, yo) So glad the full version is up; even shots of the audience, grooving on a rare encore Letterman had some seriously awesome bands,.
How have I never heard of this happening? I thought Future Islands was the most epic performance on Letterman up until this very moment. This is fantastic.
You're right though. Future Islands was pretty epic.
Nothing will ever top that Future Islands for me, but this is great as well.
I hadn't seen the Future Islands performance, but for me the best were always this one, Beastie Boys' "Ch-Check It Out" and LCD Soundsystem doing "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" cuz it was so damn WEIRD.
Oh, as an individual performance...check out the few that Robert Plant did on Dave...WOW ....few better singers on planet earth and his band is excellent.....Page taught him to only accept fantastically high standards while he was with LZ
Never forget seeing this episode of letterman and the seeing the heavy for the first time. Amazing performance
Damn the second time they really flew!
Had to watch this again for the hundredth time I got the heavy buzz again . Saw them last night at the KoKo London . Best gig I have seen them perform . The place was heaving
Who the hell are the 22 people who gave this a thumbs-down?
Members of the Hyperion corporation
Guess they didn't like him now.
@@Nio744 great answer
handled with class, great performer
Geezuz 7:17 - 8:05 everyone on that stage was on fire. so great. can't stop watching this
Ah Man !
When the hornsection starts overblowning all at ones while the drums keep on rolling!
Its just Amazing⭐️💜
So cool to see Dave THAT pumped to get these guys to jam it again!
Damn, that is just ferocious!
I come back to this all the time… excellent rip of the song
Miss Dave and the Heavy.....
Jesus fricking Christ! Been looking for the extended version for a long time. Thank you !
I remember seeing this when it aired and was blown away. Easily my favorite moment on Letterman, next to Neil Peart on drum week.
I was working night shift the night that this aired. At about 9 I started feeling sick and left work. I lay in bed with a fever and one eye open and this came on! I could not react because I felt so rotten but I knew I had just witnessed something awesome! When Dave tells you to play it again... goosebumps!
You know you’ve done something right when Dave letterman wants you to play some more
This song is just out of this world. No wonder Dave, no wonder...
This is a stone cold groove real deal SLAMMING SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this band and this performance. I just keep rewatching it as the years go by.
now that's how to get a crowd going. Great band, The Heavy.
The Heavy rules.
Awesome Live
That may have been the greatest compliment and achievement that band ever made. And I'm not saying that to be condescending. That's some high praise. They rocked the late night crowd. Wow! Love this performance.
Just amazing
I saw this live on Letterman when it happened. Only now, ten years later, do I realize that they went for their closer and just went fucking all out. They had no back-up anything. It was this or nothing. And they fucking owned. How many fucking bullshit musical guests did David have. Not these guys!
I just heard this song on the Last OG new season. I had forgotten now great this song is. I remember seeing them on the Late Show ten years ago. Awesome!
Love these guys. First time seeing them on Letterman. Got my list on shuffle and cant wait for this to pop on.
watched it again.... just a great song and performance.
perfect perfomance!
yes sir
This is super cool.
The drummer is a machine
This is sooo damn good! Wow!
AWESOME!
Each second is more hype than the last one.
Thank you for posting! So pleased to finally find the full version of one of the best live performances of all time!
legendary !
You sir are some sort of legend man 😊
This is a nice and cool song.Great rock band!
Two members of the Heavy are now a part of The Roots crew on TSJF! This is crazy!
This performance grabs your gut and won't let go. WOW!
“ Bangin’ / still Bangin’ 14-years later” … awesome performance
Wish the group had more airplay. Love their music 🎶 Was fortunate to be off work this night and watch this live. AWESOME!
Thank You David and the Heavy's for an awesome show 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽❤️❤️❤️
This was the very fist time EVER that Letterman asked for a bis!
They killed it
Thank you
The one time I wish my speakers went to 1,000.
I remember watching that back when TWC had certain channels in HD that were unscrambled.
I didn't have a cable box back then so I only watched a few programs in HD
AWESOME...
What a bloody great song.
Great performance
Thank you very much Don! Literally 10 years of search are over :)))
Magic
I can just imagine Otis Redding singing this song to.
Thanks so much for posting the full version! Been watching the cut version for years.. so cool to see the full thing with Paul and Dave joining in.
Thank you! This is awesome extended performance! I had never seen all of this because the "live" version cut to commercial and picked up at the end after the commercial break.
My favorite LSWDL performance. Thanks DonZ!
Owning it 👍
I remember watching this when it aired. Still incredible
Been waiting a long time for someone to post the missing clip! Excellent!! Thanks!!
THANK YOUUUUU!!!! I've been looking for this version for years. Best I've ever seen. And to the other commentors, thanks for the leads on other great performances
I love this
Looks like other horns playing behind and above Paul Schaffer. I've watched this repeatedly.Excellent!
Shaffer; Paul Shaffer.
Up there with Vintage Trouble, Fat White Family, and The Orwells for my favorite Letterman performances. Thanks!
I'm sure you'll recall the Orwell's "Who needs you" debacle lol. Letterman asked for an encore, and the singer basically nervously refused (My dad believed he chickened out, I thought he was trying to be a Jim Morrison type a-hole) Since it would include 4 songs+background story, I wonder if Don wants post a vid of that with a further behind the scenes explanation, of the thinking behind the band refusing, then the late show having them back and what discussions happened behind the scenes since they actually came back the second time to do it in less than a year I think and it was all pretty crazy + Pauls improv was one for the ages 😉
OMG! How did you get this?!?! I remember seeing it on the Late Show website right after this performance. It was up for a few months, then it came down and all that was available on the internet was the TV version where they cut to commercial. I was convinced I would never see the uncut version again. Awesome!
I captured it when the show uploaded it. I didn’t have the best software at the time to grab it, unfortunately.
Dud I saw this live on tv . Top5 performances . Fact is it's the first time David asked for an encore . He decided on his own . Legendary
@@michaelbaddyr7654 Totally agree in top 5..I recall another was James Brown mid 80's@ Letterman early years, Brown said it was one of his best performances as well and he had many in his life
@@dongiller yeah I saw this live too, figured I'd never see the full version, thanks for that Don! in fact I always thought they just played until off air, like I figured the studio monitors showed the credits and they didn't actually play the whole song again. I recall the very few times when Letterman saying something similar, and I thought it was a combination of Dave loving the song/garbage time
Wow! I've seen Dave go nuts over a band, but that was a first for me. I found REM and Warren because of Dave
David is so delighted haha so cool to see. And the sax player in the middle almost looks like he has Trump hair with that hat lol.
Dave in his Volvo doing 125 with this on repeat
I like you very much, always have, always will
#TheFighter 💪 Boss Tune! Perfect for that film
Great performance. It has to be hard to do the same song back to back and not have the second be flat.
That's what blows me away the most. The second version is subtly different and just as good and engaging as the first instead of just being a repeat. It's got its own energy and flar and the whole thing hits such a high point at the end.
It's awesome when they drop into the quieter bridge at 6:30 and you can hear how riled up the crowd is, then how the crowd starts reacting when they know the bridge is over and the whole band is about to drop back in.
lawdy sooooo goooood
thanks
Oh, yeahhhhhh ❤❤❤
Holy shit
Bad ass
