What’s crazy is I have hunt down the freeman, I would’ve made a joke where I make an S+ Tier and put it all there and would’ve talked about how it’s like the 2nd coming of Christ but a lot of people have already heard about the game and I kinda wanted to cover lesser known games (and plus I didn’t wanna subject myself to HDTF lol)

Something about Swelter, the mod's theme focuses on the 2 rebel factions ideologies and morales of The Main Rebelion" and The Anarchist Where the Anarchist are you know, more Anarchists and refusing to fight in bigger batles against the combine, their goal is more humanitarian, making the outside areas more liveabale for future generations, like how we saw that baby in that container that was born during the combine reign (and the supresion field) And the Main Rebelion are fighting for the humanity as a whole, going toe to toe with the combine and going in big battles, but they are willing to sabotage and kill their fellow humans to complete their goals. Also one corection about the endings, both endings dont really afect the main story that much, since the endings are about more or less rebels on the Main rebelion's side, so both endings can fit into the canon of HL2.
That’s why Snowdrop Escape disappointed me a lot and why Swelter is really goddamn great, it had this super interesting storyline where sole former Russian soldiers don’t particularly like the Rebels or the Combine, so they use both as pawns to their schemes, but the execution of snowdrop escape was so underwhelming (5 puzzles every nanosecond), but on the other hand Swelter is just a blast to play throughout with a great storyline with great themes and ideologies
Cool thing is about Entropy Zero 1/2, is it is getting a sequel aka Entropy Zero 3, last update about it was 4-5 months ago and it was a soundtrack with the description having a clear reference to bad cop and wilson. We will likely get Entropy Zero 3 in 2026 or 2027, and possibly a trailer in 2025. You can find the sound track on the breadman youtube channel alongside their other videos and projects.

I remember in the dev commentary of Portal that there were bugs when players were pushed into a portal on the ceiling. They could either rework the map so it wasn't needed, or they could fix it. They decided to fix it because they knew modders might make maps with it. Truly the goats.
I actually got to play through EZ2, and can confirm that holy shit, it is good. Having to deal with that super zombie underneath Arbeit made me need a new pair of underwear several times, and when I finally got my guns back, I was still scared of that super zombie.
Yesterday i replay that part in max dificulty... It was something else, bullets do next to nothing to him, and every Time or so, 2 of the Fast zombies come to fuck You While the entire room spits fire... 10/10 definitly recomend it
@ekzarcunkotov1026 That was very good. UNFORTUNATELY, the first time I played that part, the Gonome was bugged and was already outside the liquid. He was standing on the left or right side of the room, doing nothing. I thought it was normal, since you know.. Aiden didn't want to see him again. But still. Felt a bit disappointed from that, even thought it is one of the funniest scenes. Also, just to add to that. "HOLY SH1T ! OPEN THE DOOR !!"

Might be my nostalgia and bias, but I'd put Nightmare House 2 higher. Aside the usual jumpscare once a while (tbf it was just a norm of horror back in those days), all other scripted scares were really well crafted. I don't think I ever played horror that utilized so many different tricks to mess with you. Although without an interesting story or some deep gameplay, it turns into a "spooky attraction ride" where you expect new scare after another as you progress, and so on until the final act. But that might be a cup of tea for some that only want pure horror experience to test your mental endurance, since that's where most of mod's focus and effort went to.
Nightmare House 2 is tropey and annoying nowadays because back when it came out, what it did was INNOVATIVE. It was one of the games that created/popularized most of the tropes used in nowadays horror games, so a modern gamer playing it would be bored out of their skull since they've seen everything before in other games.
It's truly under hell when you know that Mxthe is never gonna return back because Insurgency Sandstorm pays real shekels and all other people from the mod teams are who knows where.

completely agree with the Too many Crate, people giving it too much credit for it worth, i went onto mod db and people basically praises up and down with this mod, but when i played it, it feel like the mod was made by a 9 years old just know how to use Hammer editor and think it's smart and funny also funfact : as a cry of fear fan this fact will make it 10x better : the story of cry of fear is the real simon writting a book to stop himself from commit suicide, in all the ending, you either go up against book simon and the real simon, the monster in the game is stopping book simon from killing the real simon, or better put it this way : the monster is actually trying to stop simon from commiting self delete
So, Carcass and the doctor were actually the good ones here? This game's double whammy of "unnervingly scari" and spooky storyline and lore just unsettles me a lot Spoiler Including, the moment Simon's crush just casually jumps off a building, as if it was a HL "haha scientist die" gag
@@ChesterManfred yeah, in the game, book simon is the negative emotion of the real one, if you start looking the main protagonist as a villian ( book simon ) the game starting to make much much more sense i mean like, the first thing book simon do when he see the real simon is killing him right, like yo, chill out why don't the 2 of them talk first and then punching each other Sophie jump off the building is a double edge knife : - she don't like simon as a person as he is right now, in fact in the cops ending they end up together because simon is a changed man OR - in simon perspective sophie rejection is like a death sentence to both of them ( yes simon is somewhat of an incel ) in the 2nd ending simon killed her to keep her for himself, which is the exact thing that the book trying to depict thats why cof is so special, because you actually playing as a sympathetic villian
Surprising you didn’t include Underhell when you did include NH2. Would definitely recommend it. Also it’s not a HL mod but check out Infra if you like exploring source environments
FYI The good ending of cry of fear is_ The multiplayer ending when time traveling, interdimensional police officers stop the car crash that paralyzed simon (Driven by the protagonist of Afraid of Monsters). Simon lives happily ever after with his girlfriend. The multiplayer is just playing backward through cry of fear. With friends.
I played a lot of the mods on this list years ago, but I somehow had never even heard of Amalgam and I'm really surprised it flew under my radar. It looks really interesting, especially if it's good enough to be A-tier. Thanks a lot for bringing attention to it! (and as one of Entropy : Zero 2's developers, thank you for your kind words 😉)

Awesome tier list! I wanted to mention another set of mods that weren't on this list: the 1187 mods for HL2. I haven't played them in a whole, but I remember them being a ton of fun to play! I think the idea was you playing a random guy during the first portal storms that rock Earth after the Resonance Cascade?
Literally EVERY VIDEO I see people talk about that puzzle in Entropy Zero 1 about how they could have solved it. Like literally how you were intended to solve that button puzzle. There were no hints, no secrets, and no way in hell to find out how to get past that door without looking up a walkthrough or just going fuck it and scrambling around with the buttons until something works at last.
A few honorable mentions: - DayHard: This one is strangely alot of fun, even though it being completely ridiculous I remember it very fondly (although I had to google to find its name), also it was suprisingly well made :P - Mistake of Pythagoras: Dunno if I ever finished this but I remember it being completely wacky and weird, but also well done? Do I remember correctly? - Smod: Not quite the same category, but this overhaul was SO MUCH FUN. I spent HOURS playing through HL2 and different maps with slow motion and all the awesome weaponry, it really made it so much fun playing through HL2 again with this - Sven Co Op : Never really played it, but again it basically adds co op to the base game, so I guess more of an overhaul and not exactly fitting for this list I also remember HL: Alyx having several really good mods / maps. One I liked alot was one taking place in a bar where you have to shoot your way through and rescue someone - "Contracts" or something?
Downfall was originally planned to be a trilogy and the second chapter was in developement for a while (there's even screenshots of it). But the dev got a job at Ubisoft and he abandoned the modding scene, though he commented that he might do something with Source 2 one day. A shame because the level of mapping in Downfall is nothing less than genious.
Back in the day games could be voted to be added into the steam library (greenlighted), so i'm pretty sure the before creator didn't pay anything. I also remember a lot of people hating on the mod back then for some reason

I believe Before went on steam in the greenlight days, I don't recall entirely but I can't remember a downpayment being required for listing on greenlight.
Half-Life mods are a big rabbit hole of its own but the ones you picked up were good contenders to talk about since they're mostly popular. You should definitely work in the follow up of this video because there's more awesomeness when it comes to Half-Life mods.
Great list! Def gave me some mods to try Tho missed out on trying Entropy Uprising. Give it a go, think might like it also of you liked the main entropy entries Edit: Its a mod for entropy 1 found on moddb, but has p good story writing, just under the great writing of Entropy 2. Aloooong with 3 diff ending to go with where 2 leave wanting for more
When I first played Genry's Great Escape from City 17. I liked it, but the only thing that I wasn't a big fan of was the fact that you didn't have a crosshair to point and shoot at your enemies.
I personally really liked Snowdrop Escape, despite the voice acting and whatnot. The atmosphere it brings is really fantastic and the puzzles weren't the worst. Might also just be that its very Metro-inspired. Great video nonetheless and uhhhhh.... oh yea you forgot the goat mod Minerva!
Entropy Zero 2 is absolutely killer, loved every second of it. It honestly kind of shocked me just how much better it is than the first mod, and it's not like that mod was bad at all. Breadmen knocked it out of the park.

Itchyosaurs are the most irritating part of Half Life 1, they wrecked my nerves and tried my patience countless times. (And they're kinda ugly) I'm so glad they didn't add them as an enemy in Hl2. I wish they just scrubbed them entirely from it
Entropy Zero 2 is one of my favorite source GAMES, period, let alone mods. EZ1 was an absolute slog, but beating it made you understand how Bad Cop could act as a true Anti-Freeman, even if they (sort of) never meet. He's an absolute beast. From the cutscenes perfectly matching Mossman's video calls in Half Life 2 to the amazing blend of Portal and Half-Life tech (Longfall Rebel Soldiers for the win) and the amazing dialogue, it might be the best thing we get until the day Valve finally (maybe) decides to buckle up and actually release Half-Life 3 or Part 3 or Overworld or whatever they're gonna call it. (Also the kick mechanic is something I genuinely wish came standard with every Source game, I'd love to boot some turrets as Chell).
R&D has been my favorite HL2 mod although I feel like it went undercover during the past years. When I wanted to play it last time, I couldn't find it any more. Echoes has been an absolute blast. Really close to playing HL1 as a kid with my best friend on a hot summer weekend. Have you given Field Intensity a try? It comes really close to Echoes and is one of the few mods to mix HL1 and Opposing Force weaponry.

I always had a bad habit of spoiling games through RUclips or any other media for myself. For Entropy Zero: 2 I did my best to hold off my urge, and damm. It was definitely worth it. In fact, it was so good that I called my megabase on my friend's Minecraft server: Arbeit Complex. ( Arbeit - The name Aperture used to cover their real name/location.)
While I would agree that Nightmare House 2 is not exactly super scary or anything, I think it's atmosphere is very well done. Idk, maybe it's just cause I don't do well with horror games in general, but for me the atmosphere still left me feeling unsettled much of the time and somewhat on edge.
I will admit that some sections in that game did put me a little on edge, but it was so inconsequential that I didn’t even bother bringing it up in the video Recording mods, especially nightmare house 2, tends to bring out the “”immersion”” so to speak because I’m talking to myself, which means I have a very hard time engaging with the scenery to 100 percent
@@KardinerYT they hunger (almost 300k downloads) way more than echoes. delta particles(30k downloads, small amount but its a new mod and its GOOD) black ops(65k downloads) was an old but also a pretty important mod. so is human error, witch is responsible for entropy zero's existence. timewarp, signal lost are also remarkable despite running on xash3d. and also absolute zero...
@@SolitaryElite Also Underhell, Afraid of Monsters, EZ: Uprising, Half-Quake, Paranoia, Prospect or even HD:TF with the M3SA build. There's really too many mods missing for an "ultimate" tier-list.
There were two good mods for HL1: 1) Paranoia - about russian operative from "Alpha", who fights (chechen?) terrorists in the beginning, but then we going underground, into some secret soviet research base with monsters, zombies, e.t.c.. 2) Invasion - it's French mod (as I remember character's voices). It has new UI (dialogue options?.. can't recall very well), they even gave you a lighter instead of standart flashlight. Some changes in damage system... hard to recall as I played it as a child.
Some extra info since I've been in the Half-Life modding scene longer then most of your viewers have been alive (ouch D:) 1. Arctic Adventures started development as early as 2009 and after an absolute disaster of a development timeline saw it's first release in 2019. Suffice to say, it's first launch was borderline unplayable. You are playing the "Fixed" Version. 2. Logistique also experienced similar development hurdles, starting in 2007 and releasing a promising demo in 2008 before going radio silent until 2019 where the author dusted off his files and released the first intended episode in 2020. Call it nostalgia, but I was absolutely stoked to see it launch since I was following it for so long, definitely more of a looker tho, but compared to many other projects it's like a diamond in the rough as its exceptionally rare to see a cancelled mod from those early days see the light of day. 3. The 2005 launch of nightmare House was a pretty basic map-pack which the author recreated for a 2008 remake, then followed it up with a 2010 sequel and a 2015 remaster OF the sequel. It had some creepy design motifs at the time but in hindsight they feel a bit antiquated. Thankfully the devs then spent the following years making a full-blown game called In Sound Mind which is up there with one of my favorite horror games ever. Just sublime game design, *play it!* The Mannequins even come back! 4. Before was the only survivor of a cancelled Russian Mapping contest IIRC, surprised you didn't mention how bullshit the end boss was! 5. Caged was a remake of the mappers Original entry for Project Quantum Leap, a community-made map-pack from 2002 and he definitely brought his A-Game for the 2017 relaunch. 6. Cry of Fear actually had a point of reference for it's madness, as the actual mod-lead put a TON of his own personal trauma into Simons character. There are some photos of his self-inflicted injuries floating around they aren't a pretty sight. 7. R&D literally dropped out of nowhere one day in 2009 with no previews and instantly became mod of the year. Sadly the lead devs other projects never went far and he dropped out of the modding scene in 2012.
In the final fight of Entropy Zero 2 you can turn any container into vorts 100%. They will shoot you, the adviser, as well as your other self on the ground, sending him floating higher and higher upwards😂 Also bms smg is really accurate❤️

I actually got to play through EZ2, and can confirm that holy shit, it is good. Having to deal with that super zombie underneath Arbeit made me need a new pair of underwear several times, and when I finally got my guns back, I was still scared of that super zombie.

Might be my nostalgia and bias, but I'd put Nightmare House 2 higher. Aside the usual jumpscare once a while (tbf it was just a norm of horror back in those days), all other scripted scares were really well crafted. I don't think I ever played horror that utilized so many different tricks to mess with you. Although without an interesting story or some deep gameplay, it turns into a "spooky attraction ride" where you expect new scare after another as you progress, and so on until the final act. But that might be a cup of tea for some that only want pure horror experience to test your mental endurance, since that's where most of mod's focus and effort went to.
Nightmare House 2 is tropey and annoying nowadays because back when it came out, what it did was INNOVATIVE. It was one of the games that created/popularized most of the tropes used in nowadays horror games, so a modern gamer playing it would be bored out of their skull since they've seen everything before in other games.

I recommend you try Afraid of Monsters, it's made by the Cry of Fear development team afaik, and is also a unique experience. I enjoyed it!

Awesome tier list! I wanted to mention another set of mods that weren't on this list: the 1187 mods for HL2. I haven't played them in a whole, but I remember them being a ton of fun to play! I think the idea was you playing a random guy during the first portal storms that rock Earth after the Resonance Cascade?
Literally EVERY VIDEO I see people talk about that puzzle in Entropy Zero 1 about how they could have solved it. Like literally how you were intended to solve that button puzzle. There were no hints, no secrets, and no way in hell to find out how to get past that door without looking up a walkthrough or just going fuck it and scrambling around with the buttons until something works at last.

A few honorable mentions:
- DayHard: This one is strangely alot of fun, even though it being completely ridiculous I remember it very fondly (although I had to google to find its name), also it was suprisingly well made :P
- Mistake of Pythagoras: Dunno if I ever finished this but I remember it being completely wacky and weird, but also well done? Do I remember correctly?
- Smod: Not quite the same category, but this overhaul was SO MUCH FUN. I spent HOURS playing through HL2 and different maps with slow motion and all the awesome weaponry, it really made it so much fun playing through HL2 again with this
- Sven Co Op : Never really played it, but again it basically adds co op to the base game, so I guess more of an overhaul and not exactly fitting for this list
I also remember HL: Alyx having several really good mods / maps. One I liked alot was one taking place in a bar where you have to shoot your way through and rescue someone - "Contracts" or something?

Downfall was originally planned to be a trilogy and the second chapter was in developement for a while (there's even screenshots of it).
But the dev got a job at Ubisoft and he abandoned the modding scene, though he commented that he might do something with Source 2 one day.
A shame because the level of mapping in Downfall is nothing less than genious.
Back in the day games could be voted to be added into the steam library (greenlighted), so i'm pretty sure the before creator didn't pay anything.

Entropy Zero 2 is absolutely killer, loved every second of it. It honestly kind of shocked me just how much better it is than the first mod, and it's not like that mod was bad at all. Breadmen knocked it out of the park.

Entropy Zero 2 is one of my favorite source GAMES, period, let alone mods. EZ1 was an absolute slog, but beating it made you understand how Bad Cop could act as a true Anti-Freeman, even if they (sort of) never meet. He's an absolute beast.
From the cutscenes perfectly matching Mossman's video calls in Half Life 2 to the amazing blend of Portal and Half-Life tech (Longfall Rebel Soldiers for the win) and the amazing dialogue, it might be the best thing we get until the day Valve finally (maybe) decides to buckle up and actually release Half-Life 3 or Part 3 or Overworld or whatever they're gonna call it.
(Also the kick mechanic is something I genuinely wish came standard with every Source game, I'd love to boot some turrets as Chell).

R&D has been my favorite HL2 mod although I feel like it went undercover during the past years. When I wanted to play it last time, I couldn't find it any more.
Echoes has been an absolute blast. Really close to playing HL1 as a kid with my best friend on a hot summer weekend.
Have you given Field Intensity a try? It comes really close to Echoes and is one of the few mods to mix HL1 and Opposing Force weaponry.

I always had a bad habit of spoiling games through RUclips or any other media for myself. For Entropy Zero: 2 I did my best to hold off my urge, and damm. It was definitely worth it.

While I would agree that Nightmare House 2 is not exactly super scary or anything, I think it's atmosphere is very well done. Idk, maybe it's just cause I don't do well with horror games in general, but for me the atmosphere still left me feeling unsettled much of the time and somewhat on edge.
I will admit that some sections in that game did put me a little on edge, but it was so inconsequential that I didn’t even bother bringing it up in the video
Recording mods, especially nightmare house 2, tends to bring out the “”immersion”” so to speak because I’m talking to myself, which means I have a very hard time engaging with the scenery to 100 percent

There were two good mods for HL1:
1) Paranoia - about russian operative from "Alpha", who fights (chechen?) terrorists in the beginning, but then we going underground, into some secret soviet research base with monsters, zombies, e.t.c..
2) Invasion - it's French mod (as I remember character's voices). It has new UI (dialogue options?.. can't recall very well), they even gave you a lighter instead of standart flashlight. Some changes in damage system... hard to recall as I played it as a child.
They Hunger, 1187, Entropy Zero: Uprising, Underhell, Raising The Bar Redux, and Darkstar you should put on a part 2 if you make one.

Some extra info since I've been in the Half-Life modding scene longer then most of your viewers have been alive (ouch D:)
1. Arctic Adventures started development as early as 2009 and after an absolute disaster of a development timeline saw it's first release in 2019. Suffice to say, it's first launch was borderline unplayable. You are playing the "Fixed" Version.
2. Logistique also experienced similar development hurdles, starting in 2007 and releasing a promising demo in 2008 before going radio silent until 2019 where the author dusted off his files and released the first intended episode in 2020. Call it nostalgia, but I was absolutely stoked to see it launch since I was following it for so long, definitely more of a looker tho, but compared to many other projects it's like a diamond in the rough as its exceptionally rare to see a cancelled mod from those early days see the light of day.
3. The 2005 launch of nightmare House was a pretty basic map-pack which the author recreated for a 2008 remake, then followed it up with a 2010 sequel and a 2015 remaster OF the sequel. It had some creepy design motifs at the time but in hindsight they feel a bit antiquated. Thankfully the devs then spent the following years making a full-blown game called In Sound Mind which is up there with one of my favorite horror games ever. Just sublime game design, *play it!* The Mannequins even come back!
4. Before was the only survivor of a cancelled Russian Mapping contest IIRC, surprised you didn't mention how bullshit the end boss was!
5. Caged was a remake of the mappers Original entry for Project Quantum Leap, a community-made map-pack from 2002 and he definitely brought his A-Game for the 2017 relaunch.
6. Cry of Fear actually had a point of reference for it's madness, as the actual mod-lead put a TON of his own personal trauma into Simons character. There are some photos of his self-inflicted injuries floating around they aren't a pretty sight.
7. R&D literally dropped out of nowhere one day in 2009 with no previews and instantly became mod of the year. Sadly the lead devs other projects never went far and he dropped out of the modding scene in 2012.

In the final fight of Entropy Zero 2 you can turn any container into vorts 100%. They will shoot you, the adviser, as well as your other self on the ground, sending him floating higher and higher upwards😂
