If the HL1 flashlight in a dark hospital wasn't terrible enough, my first experience playing AoM as a young teenager was on a monitor that came default with a "screen-saving" setting that would automatically fade the screen to black if over 80% of it was dark. Not only did I have to deal with the horrible flashlight, I had to constantly shine it at the floor to keep my monitor from turning off, and if I ran out of batteries in the dark I was completely blind lmao. Still fun as all hell though
@@lolitaras22 Me too, for some fucking reason it had 'fake HDR' or whatever, so when it was dark on screen it would get like 50% more dark, and when it was bright it would get brighter. What fucking creature ever thought that was a good idea.. who tested that monitor and said 'yep looks good!' it would get so dark you couldn't see anything, many games I had to crank up gamma/brightness and ruin the atmosphere a bit..
I miss those guys, they were the best and funniest Let's Player channel (before PewDiePie and Markiplier became popular). I wish they'd reunite (even if it's just for one final Let's Play).
Actually the 3 endings feel a lot like they are meant to be part of the same sequence (assuming Ritcher hasn't skimmed on any other details): 1) David comes back to his senses and is arrested for the murders he commited 2) David is interrogated for what he did 3) David is sentenced to jail for life and makes it into the headlines (notice how the picture in the newspaper is a screenshot from ending #1) until he hangs himself to death Ultimately a very logical conclusion to the game, seems like to give the illusion of multiple choices the creator just wrote a single ending and split pieces of it through many routes lol

For a time of old horror where obnoxious jumpscares was common place, the AoE jumpscares are very meticulously put together and that's what I commend it the most for. They're so well made that you'd genuinely feel like you're hallucinating, cus you wouldn't know if some weird face on window was actually in game or just your imagination, it just pops in and out in complete silence and leaves you questioning its existence. My favorite jumpscare is one that manages to burn the shape of face into your retina, by using some trick with contrasting lighting, making you see it whenever you blinked or looked into darkness of your room. You never see other games have a scare this creative. Hell, even the loud obnoxious ones pop up while you're actively fighting enemies, making you freak out and waste ammo on nothing in moment of adrenaline. I always liked the Spike and Barley videos for this game, and the concept was a novel idea at the time. They took a simple co-op let's play of the game, and added a curated haunted house element to it with Coccyx acting as David Leatherhoff. I miss them. Barley seems to be doing okay these days, but I think Spike needs a show of love and support, judging from what I've seen his tweets.
13:03 in answer to your question, the shotgun closely resembles a Winchester 1897 12 gauge Trench Gun. Edit: I’m not saying thats what it is, I’m just saying thats what it looks very similar to. Dont get your overalls in a knot.
Afraid of monsters is a game I have an unhealthy obsession with, I just love everything about it. I don't think there are many games like it, where the game respects the player's time AND intelligence by not trampling them with lore dumps. Just a solid gameplay base with great horror environments. Most games just inconvenience the player in order to make it more scary or whatever but AoM is as fast as you want it to be without ruining the scary mood of the game, just you and your thoughts. And I have to thank Spike and barley (ft. Cockyx) for it. I watched it religiously and tune in every now and then. Heck, I was even recreating the entire AoM campaign in Left 4 Dead 2.
@@thr333stars ah it's on my channel actually, that being because it's still not done. And it's currently in hiatus due the lack of proper gameplay flow, which is pretty much saying is not exactly fun as is. It's pretty far into it though.
Thanks for the Spike N Barley shoutout, these were and are still some of the best let's plays from 2010/11, their multiplayer AOM one with Cocyx playing as david Leatheroff was just pire gold! Goofy, corny at times, but hella fun!
I know it's been said by many others, but the spike and barely mention it is something I'd never hear out of another youtuber. They're classic youtube let's plays, and I always go back every year to just have a good hit of nostalgia. Thank you.
Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear one of my favourite games at all. Thank you for your awesome video, and Andreas for his projects. I hope in the future he gonna bless us with some Afraid of Fear or something like that
I'm not a huge fan of the game nor do I dislike it, but the soundtrack department is still one of the best mysteries of OSTs in my time. The original AoM-intro theme is still unknown by every person that has been looking for it. The bassline resembles Solar Fields' Confusion Illusion but it's confirmed to not be that track. The search continues.
16:02 I think the endings are all connected honestly, regardless of route it's the exact same thing where he kills many people and those are just the sequence of what happened.
Maybe the idea of the addiction boss fight is that using your normal weapons are ways to help your addiction that instead hurt you since fighting an addiction is a long and painful process, but finding the spear is, after all the time and pain, finding the thing that works to help you fight your addiction the most without hurting yourself along the way.
I was a kid when I first played AOMDC. I was one of the people who watched COF's development because I knew their previous game. I still play AOMDC from time to time, especially via Sven Co-op to experience that fun with friends. I listen to the recordings I uploaded to youtube while I'm at work to pass the time just because of how fun it still is.
Fun fact: I grew up in Sweden at the time when this was made, and the horror themes behind it are grounded in very true things that happened. At this time, eugenics had only been reformed and most doctors had still been taught that it works and that it was a legitimate science. On top of that, they still practiced coerced sterilisation of LGBT people. Anyways, long story short: Most academics and doctors at this time had some incredibly fucked up views about mentally ill people. There was this idea that good and evil didn't exist, and that all crimes and bad things could be traced back to people who had some kind of condition or disability (I only exist because my mother asked for a second opinion). A lot of doctors would perform illegal/coerced abortions under false pretences if they suspected an infant was going to have a disability, and abuse towards mentally ill people was super common (and to be fair, still is, nobody's done anything about it). The reason I know about this is because it happened to me, and I was in fact given medication that they said were a bunch of harmless SSRIs... but then I showed them to a real doctor from a different country (admittedly an American doctor, so like, good education, shitty ethics. But still a step up). Truth is, they were extremely powerful antipsychotic meds, and without a legitimate condition that requires such medication, you're going to get brain damage. Ever since then I've heard voices in my head because of how the pills really messed me up over the course of several months. So, yeah, based on a true story. A lot of people experienced these kinds of abuses by the Swedish government. Also to you Americans out there: I get that you want public healthcare, and I respect that. But kindly shut up about the Nordic system, when you praise it, you're just parroting government propaganda. Look into French or Spanish hospitals. They're far less pseudoscientific and respect people's rights.
7:39 This picture, I never knew it was an actual picture for a real life music album. I quite literally got jumpscared by it while I was reading my college textbook for history of rock and roll (album is "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel)
17:33 i think it means that its not easy to kill addiction, and that if you try to do it to fast you can hurt yourself, and the only true way to defeat it is to slowly poke and stab away at it until you're eventually sober
13:04 I don't know if anyone has already answered but I believe the shotgun is model after either a Mossberg 590 Retro or a Winchester SXP Trench gun. Hope this helps the curious!
My first experience with this game was actually way back probably during 2010 or 2011 in Sven Coop. Someone named Cocyx ran a cooperative Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut server. What made it so fun was that the admin would occasionally join in as "David Leatherhoff," who would then proceed to do things such as: - Manipulating objects in the levels to block or hinder players, or alternatively mess with their heads - Outright walking towards players with a knife/firearms and killing them (players in Sven Coop at the time were resistant to friendly fire) - Watching players from a distance or from inaccessible areas such as behind windows or fences, especially early on in the game - Teleporting players into cages or out of the way areas to mess around with them - Changing the player's camera to David's perspective, revealing that they're being watched from above with just enough time to spin around when they gain control of their view back to see David watching over them with a rifle or something of the sort I did manage to eventually play the original, but the server that hosted the game itself was very fun. The twitchers unironically freaked me the hell out.
Probably means I need to stop playing Baldur's Gate 3 and actually sit down to watch this video! Happy to hear I'm not the only one that remembers the server!
I'm unreasonably excited that you brought up Spike and Barley, AOM was one of those things I played an unreasonable amount of times over multiple nights on Sven Co-op with friends growing up, and a surprising amount of bonding between my sister and I happened in part due to Spike and Barley's shenanigans in their playthrough. (Legit she and I go LIL OL' MAN at each other like psychopaths every now and then out of neutral.) Super cool to see some love thrown at AoM, especially since it does tend to get overshadowed by its admittedly more technically competent successor. Thank you for this video!
Ah the horror nostalgia. it never fails the great jumpscares and terrifying monsters and annoying invisible Face monsters. i wish if they going to make a Remaster version of it.
I think maybe the spear was an analogy for reaching out since spears are known for their reach and it was trying to say that you can only beat addiction by reaching out to others for help or you will just hurt yourself
Since you asked the question at 13:02 (Someone already might have answered it, but fuck it, why not) It looks to be based off a very old Ithaca Model 37 - A pump trench gun that's been in use since the late 1800's. This is a very special shotgun since the brand of Ithaca shotguns are renown for having the ability to use "slam fire", which is where you can discharge the gun by holding down the trigger and continuously fire by sliding the pump up and down. Like I said earlier, this particular model is very old and special as the barrel indicates this is one of the military models being used back during WWI and WWII - which are significantly more powerful than the civilian units that were made later on. The choke on these military models were modified to allow a much further traveling pellet distance which can travel up to 55 yards away rather than the standard 25 yards that cylinder (normal) chokes have. So overall, the dev had some really good taste in shotguns. That is a very rare firearm to collect and they pack quite a punch.
I find it comfy aswell, same with cry of fear. I think its the enviroments that do it for me, I used to spend alot of time as a kid wandering in an around town at the wee hours between mid night and sunrise when noone else was around, not even weirdos. The cool air, the freedom and the "depressing" envirement around me felt comforting. I still enjoy late night walks now.
Glad you mentioned the Soundtrack honestly, tha tracks from SAW VOL 2 (the best album ever made) really fit the dreary tone well. Just proves that the many songs from that album can convey a multitude of atmospheres . Aphex the goat!
old game engines always have the creepiest vibes for horror games/mods, Source, Goldsrc, even the Quake and Doom engines give such an eerie feling... Anyways, great video Richter, great work!

Richter clearly never experienced semen staining the mountain top
I always liked the Spike and Barley videos for this game, and the concept was a novel idea at the time. They took a simple co-op let's play of the game, and added a curated haunted house element to it with Coccyx acting as David Leatherhoff. I miss them. Barley seems to be doing okay these days, but I think Spike needs a show of love and support, judging from what I've seen his tweets.
I swear AOM and Cry Of Fear was the most underrated horror hame back then, now both games are getting recognition it deserved
13:03 in answer to your question, the shotgun closely resembles a Winchester 1897 12 gauge Trench Gun.
Edit: I’m not saying thats what it is, I’m just saying thats what it looks very similar to. Dont get your overalls in a knot.
bruh, video was posted 46 seconds ago and your comment is from 10 hours ago
how did you answer to the video already? it was posted 1 min ago

HOW DID YOU POST THIS COMMENT BEFORE THE VIDEO
The 'banana girl' at 7:38 is actually the album cover of 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel
Richter you just sent me on the biggest nostalgia trip of all time, especially when I heard the Spike and Barley intro sound lol
Dude when I heard Barleys voice I got fucking whiplashed from the nostalgia hit. I loved their videos so much when i was kid
Tbh, seeing Rumpel pouring so much love and care into his projects is inspiring as someone who is also working on a few fan projects.
Can you link AoM campaign? I would highly appreciate it, searched for AoM content on workshop, didn't find this
@@thr333stars ah it's on my channel actually, that being because it's still not done.
And it's currently in hiatus due the lack of proper gameplay flow, which is pretty much saying is not exactly fun as is.
It's pretty far into it though.
The shotgun you asked about at 13:01 in the bottom left is the Winchester Model 1887, More widely known as the M87 Trench, Or the Trench gun.
I just realized, the song you played at 19:57 is At The Heart Of It All by Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails for the album Further Down The Spiral
The search continues.
always love these mod reviews/retrospectives, and that hoodie thing is just wholesome
16:02
I think the endings are all connected honestly, regardless of route it's the exact same thing where he kills many people and those are just the sequence of what happened.
That's a very interesting way to look at it.
maybe the monsters he killed was people
@@Turtle69696maybe he was afraid of those monsters
The girl from the portrait is the album cover for In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, a really good record and its really cool that Rumpel liked it.
For someone whose barely into his 20's, Richter Overtime tends to "Old man Yells at cloud" wax poetic about the not to distant past.
You called his messenger bag a purse or something 🤣
I love your use of Black Mesa tracks throughout this video. Amazing game with an even better soundtrack.
22:27 “Oh what’s this, BOOP, Superjuice”
I was a kid when I first played AOMDC. I was one of the people who watched COF's development because I knew their previous game. I still play AOMDC from time to time, especially via Sven Co-op to experience that fun with friends. I listen to the recordings I uploaded to youtube while I'm at work to pass the time just because of how fun it still is.
Fun fact:
I grew up in Sweden at the time when this was made, and the horror themes behind it are grounded in very true things that happened.
Also to you Americans out there:
I get that you want public healthcare, and I respect that.
0:10 resident evil. Nothing’s more fun than going through a haunted house, while making tactical decisions and blasting zombie’s heads off.
Thank you for covering this, pyro needed a new content idea
I love the part where David said "I am a monster and people are afraid of monsters".
The spike and barley mention holy moly. Didn't expect that but it is what introduced me to AoM
7:40 Motherfucker just put a Neutral Milk Hotel album cover in his game. Respect.
My first experience with this game was actually way back probably during 2010 or 2011 in Sven Coop. Someone named Cocyx ran a cooperative Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut server. What made it so fun was that the admin would occasionally join in as "David Leatherhoff," who would then proceed to do things such as:
- Manipulating objects in the levels to block or hinder players, or alternatively mess with their heads
- Outright walking towards players with a knife/firearms and killing them (players in Sven Coop at the time were resistant to friendly fire)
- Watching players from a distance or from inaccessible areas such as behind windows or fences, especially early on in the game
- Teleporting players into cages or out of the way areas to mess around with them
- Changing the player's camera to David's perspective, revealing that they're being watched from above with just enough time to spin around when they gain control of their view back to see David watching over them with a rifle or something of the sort
I did manage to eventually play the original, but the server that hosted the game itself was very fun. The twitchers unironically freaked me the hell out.
trust me i know bro i literally talked about this stuff in the vid lmao
Probably means I need to stop playing Baldur's Gate 3 and actually sit down to watch this video! Happy to hear I'm not the only one that remembers the server!
7:38 BANANA GIRL??? Come on bruh...that's the album cover of "The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel...
Thank you, I'm so happy someone pointed it out. It's a great album!
(Legit she and I go LIL OL' MAN at each other like psychopaths every now and then out of neutral.)
Super cool to see some love thrown at AoM, especially since it does tend to get overshadowed by its admittedly more technically competent successor.
7:38 banana girl? what the hell are you talking about?? that is a music album. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
my favourite part of this entire mod has to be the “over here” sound the plays during the first dream sequence
The biggest jumpscare is seeing the Neutral Milk Hotel album cover
Since you asked the question at 13:02 (Someone already might have answered it, but fuck it, why not)
It looks to be based off a very old Ithaca Model 37 - A pump trench gun that's been in use since the late 1800's.
That is a very rare firearm to collect and they pack quite a punch.
played this a ton as a kid and never realized that neutral milk hotel album cover was in the game. love this guy's taste in music.
Same honestly, it's hilarious that Richter called the character on the album cover "banana girl" too lol
Gave you a sub, I enjoyed sitting here listening to someone speak in detail about such a creative project I enjoyed in my teen years long ago.

Watching your videos on HL1 mods is making me wanna get all of them. Great stuff man. I myself wanna make one in the future.
ahhh Afraid of Monsters, i find this game rather comfy... even if the game is actually pretty scary, especially when you get to the pitch black forest
This game made me cry of fear because I’m afraid of monsters.
I don’t why I find him seeing “And a giant fucking face” so humerus. “The fucking face”
The team needs to make more horror games
You just unlocked a memory for me, this game has been in the back of my head for years
This is exactly how i’d hope to see the gameplay of half life to evolve into the space of modern fps! Im very excited to see your work progress!!
4:45 background song name pls
13:01 I believe the shotgun appears to be a mix of a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 590
7:38 that painting is a reference to the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
old game engines always have the creepiest vibes for horror games/mods, Source, Goldsrc, even the Quake and Doom engines give such an eerie feling...
Anyways, great video Richter, great work!
thank you bro
