Worked perfectly!! My husband was so impressed that I fixed my door issue on my truck that he asked me to fix his door issue. I got a new pair of shoes out of the deal! ;) Thanks again!!
I have an 04 ram 1500 couldnt figure out why my window wouldnt roll up on the front passenger and bought switches only for the issue to persist before i got here. You are a life saver thanks a bunch!
You saved us so much trouble and money for your video. And... your instructions made it simple for us to fix our Dodge 2500 Ram. The automatic door and light was not working .Thanks a bunch. Hope others can also use this info and save them money.
I only searched once and found your video, VERY LUCKY for me. I recently developed a right rear power door lock not working on my '06 Ram quad cab 1500. I was just about ready to tear the door panel off and dig in when I thought I'd check good old RUclips first. Sure enough I found 1 broken wire (orange with gray stripe) for power lock. Can't thank you enough for the information. It's nice to see people like you taking the time to set up a camera and go thru all the steps to help out a stranger somewhere.
This video you made bud is SUPER helpful, man I thought it was gonna be a window regulator or motor and when I looked at the harness first, turns out I have 2 broken wires, thank you bud!
You are the man! I fixed mine this morning. I had four wires broken. Rear window wouldn't go up. I didn't even realize the rest were not working! Thanks again!
Found 5 bare wires in my drivers side rear door harness. They weren't broken but the insulation was missing in a few small spots. Passenger side rear was fine, no broken/bare wires found. The symptom was that the dome light would randomly come on, the dinger would go off, and the door lock on that door would lock and unlock all at the same time. I tugged on the wires and they weren't broken so I just taped them up good, then put the accordion loom back on and taped it all up with electrical tape. Thanks for the tips and fix!
Hey... hi !! The quick and dirty fix is one way to go, but it only makes the problem go away for a short time, .. and then it breaks again. Lets back up. The reason the wires fail in the first place is because of mechanical fatigue- the wires bending back and forth over and over again. Its a design defect- not an electrical one but a lack of good mechanical design. If you put crimp splices in the loop it only makes the failure happen even sooner (again) because it puts a stiffener in the loop and therefore places all the future bending into one spot- the end of the crimp splice where the wire connects. I figured out a way to do this fix in a similar way that actually solves the problem long term. Instead of using crimps, solder in a 13 inch long wire. Use shrink tube at each end. When done, put back the rubber boot and wrap thoroughly with electrical tape. This extends the entire wire harness. Make a loop vertically in the door jamb. This makes the wire motion distributed along a long section and minimizes the mechanical strain. It will never fail again. I did this to mine. The loop sits nicely along side the door and stays naturally in place. I do however suggest a glue-on or screw on zip tie base secured to the door just to be sure long-term so that the wire loop stays in place. Good luck!
Great temp fix. I would not cut the boot loose on the door side. It will peel back out of the way. Also I would use butt splices that have weather tight heat shrink. Then your temp fix will last much longer if you simply can't or don't want to tackle replacing the entire harness.
Thank you for helping me out big time. I spent a few hours troubleshooting my way back from the front door to the rear. My rear drivers side window and door lock stopped working. After I found the back door had no power, I stopped to search RUclips and came across your video. As soon as I looked in the boot, all but one wire had been severed!! All but one! If it were only one, I’d solder and heat shrink and be done with it. Anyway, thanks again! Your Ram is beautiful by the way.
Hey Chris... thanks for the time spent on making this video. My rear driver window quit working last Sunday when my wife and I and the dogs were touring around Salmon Idaho. Came out of the hot springs and I let it down to give the pups some fresh air... wouldn't come back up. Had to rig a towel into the frame to keep the wind out... it was 9 F. When I got home I looked up 'most probable causes'... After watching your vid I opened it up... 7 wires broken! It was a little tricky getting 7 butt ends to fit... but it works! I hate going to the stealerships... so it'll have to do until I can get to a wrecker yard. Have a good new year.
I replaced mine a couple of years back. Ordered the part from AMAZON. Try there instead of stealerships

Great video to show where the problem is. What I did was use the high quality scrap of wire and spliced it in using solder and heat shrink. I made sure the connections were inside the pillar and the door respectively so the new wire was the only thing taking the bending. That was 4 years ago and I hadn't had a problem with that same wire but I have problems in other doors. Thanks for nothing Dodge!
That was the problem with my '07. Bought it used in that condition. 7 out of 9 broke on one side and 5 on the other. I just carefully slit the boot open without cutting it off altogether and then taped it up when I was done. Now everything works, Looks like factory. THANKS!!!!!!
One of the big issues are as the trucks get older the manufacture and after markets no longer make wiring harnesses. My 06 F-150 drivers door; most of the wires are all broken or cracked. The only think you can do is add short leads and solder use shrink wrap.
This happened to my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 about 7-8 yrs ago. The speaker quit working(driverside) and for some reason I checked this and that's what it was. At that time there wasn't any videos to help and I'm not even sure why I choose to check the door wiring harness, maybe just because it was the easiest place to start checking. Nice to see videos now👍
Don't use butt connectors!!!! They will break in no time. It is better to remove the door panel and pull all the wires back through the door. Then you don't have to cut the boot off. Also solder the connections and use heat shrink to repair the split wires. You can then pull everything back through the door. I did it this way first and it only lasted a couple months.
Easiest way to make this repair without putting damage into the rubber protector is pop the door side boot out, pull broken wire through the boot. Find same or bigger guage wire and use heatshrink butt connector and connect together. Push through boot out otherside and repeat. Put back together and you're done.
I'm having the same issue on my rear driver's side power window the speaker quit working and the switch will let the window to go down but won't go up. I plan on working on it after I get back from vacation. I'm going to try your method. I had a similar issue with my previous Ford truck 4 years ago on the driver's side I used the same connector to repair the wires.
As a professional, I can't do this in the dealership..But years ago there were no fancy tubes like this...All we did was unwrap tape and fix wire the re-tape it back up...a new harness costs $180.00 .. Good job fellow mechanic,,, one door on my own truck is taped lol.
I pried the big boot out of the door side and then split the boot lengthwise. When I got all the wires put back together I put the boot over the wires and wrapped it with tape. The door part is so thick it just sealed itself when I stuck it back in the door side.
Great video on my truck I opened all windows now can’t close, power mirrors don’t work do you think I have broken wires some where? I checked fuses and all good but I did notice one of my battery terminals melting… 🤔 SOS 🆘 any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
I must have a bunch of these torn because in my 02 ram 1500 quad cab neither of the rear doors unlock with the key fob or driver panel and they will only roll down from the driver control panel l, thanks for the video i got some work to do
Can you tell what each colored wire is attached to or where I can find that info. Been searching the net with no luck. I have 4 broken wires and I repaired them all but 2 are still not working. The door locks and the window. I'd rather not start completely over. It would be nice to isolate what wires I need to focus on. Thanks.
I had the same problem on my ‘07 only 6 out of 9 wires were broke in each door.Did the same as you and reconnected them and used electrical tape and bent back the last little bit.Just in case I ever brake any more wires I. can easily grab that end and open it back up again.I wouldn’t spend $300 on new harnesses and have them brake eventually.Takes no time and free to do it.
Thanks for your fix Chris. I’ll be checking both sides of mine out. I had battery drainage without a blown fuse. ECM may also be affected. Dash voltage is reading about 10 volts and passenger battery has boiled off one cap. Replaced one, passenger side battery and new battery also started getting warm. It would be nice to have a local shop that repairs ECM’s reasonably. I see they are about $700 on eBay. If the door wiring was the cause of frying my ECM, I’d like to fix problem before repairing or replacing it.
Brian Lang I have a 06’ and I’ve been having similar issues and just got a new ECM but can’t install without finding the problems that caused the failure of my ECM. I looked in my rear driver door and 6 wires broken and more in the other door. Question is haveing the ground broken into the door can that be causing issues thruout the truck? I guess I’m asking what you manage to find out from your experience? I think it’s all tied into the TIPM and one bad ground like that can cause problems in the rest of the harnesses! Please let me know what you figured out?
Not necessarily a bad fix but you could have saved the boot and kept the water protection by taking the door panel off and pullin the harness in through the door then slide the boot down the harness to access the wires. Then after you repair them you still have the boot to slide back over the repairs. The panel takes all of 30 seconds to take off and doesnt have the clips that break. You take the internal door handle off and a couple screws and it slides up and off then you disconnect the window switch pigtail.
I HAVE A QUESTION...YOU DONT HAVE TO TWIST CONNECT THOSE TWP WIRES TOGETHER BEFORE YOU BUTT SPLICE IT ?I DONT GET IT WHAT IF THEY DONT TOUCH WITHIN THE BUTT SPKICE? HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THEY ARS TOUCHING?
thanks a milly man, got quoted 800 from local dealership, tiold me buncha booshyt bout it being a security issue and could lead to whole electrical failure. shop manager claimed it would be best to redo the electrical system. same gut tried to get me on a blown head gasket when i needed a thermostat. crazy he almost convinced me my XRP headstuds were trash. turned out the place was a money pit.
it does not have to break the protective rubber when you take off the door panel and the threaded rubber protection harness over the door to the inner end
After watching your video, I found 7 wires that were broken the remaining 2 are half broke in two. i just inspected the other side and same thing is happening.
Oh my god yes, I just stumbled on these videos because I'm a widower with a daughter im disabled and fixing everything myself..it is insane everything has gone out on tgis truck 2006 dodge ram 1500 slt on a lift kit ive currently got the entire driver door control panel popped out of the handle so I can lift it and move it around so I can open and closed windows insane..my blinkers all of them dead now my entire left side of truck has no headlights low beams blinkers nothing ..
good video I did the same thing . I did cut the booth at the third fold from the socket, soldier the wire and tape the entire section with tape from column to the door.
I did the same repair but I just cut a slit down the length of the boot instead of cutting it off, that way the wires are still protected and flexible.
I have tons of electrical and interior and exterior lighting issues on my 06’ and in just my drivers rear door I found 6 broken wires including the ground. So I’m thinking with that ground being bad and going back to the TIPM it affected not only the harness it’s in but the grounding of the whole TIPM cause I can’t find a bad wire anywhere else and my ECM just got fried because of voltage draws! I have a new one but can’t install till all existing problems are fixed or I void the warranty? I’m looking for any thoughts on this matter experience any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Oh my radio is high pitched squealing with speakers in and out and a loud pop every once in a while if i can turn it on its so horrible and not high pitched when truck is turned off. Weird.
Thank you. I have a 2002 Dodge RAM 1500 that is doing the same thing. Def will do what u did. Don't want to spend $100 an hour at dealer. Again, thank u for your time.
So you did this repair job three years ago...how is it holding up? I have three or four broken wires in my door I need to fix and this is exactly how I would do it, but does it last?
what i did was i took the plastic off the door then took the speaker out pushed the rubber sleave threw the door have more room very easy with out damage the harness all my wireswhere broke fixed all the wires
It is too bad that Ram does not hire some decent electrical engineers. Wiring is Ram's only problem. Between the lights, rear door wiring, and blower motor connector, the wiring sucks.
I THINK A GOOD PAIR OF EMBROIDERY SCISSORS ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHARP POINTED TIPS WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT THEY ARE SHARP AS HELL AND CUT THROUGH THICKER STUFF THAN THIS LIKE BUTTER..
Hey thanks for the video!!! I love dirty fixes and man this saved my onion, and hey this isn't that dirty I think its a great fix!! now using merrets that's a dirt fix
There is nothing wrong with your fix. What would be wrong is to spend the money to buy a new harness that is going to do the same thing again. Dodge should come clean and fix all these crappy harnesses FREE of charge with proper wire that will last. You spend 30,000 or more for s truck and this is the crap they are proud of and want you to buy.....come on Dodge.....get your act together. I'm sick of these auto makers turning out nice looking expensive vehicles that don't stand up.
Worked perfectly!! My husband was so impressed that I fixed my door issue on my truck that he asked me to fix his door issue. I got a new pair of shoes out of the deal! ;) Thanks again!!
JJ n Amy Montoya I'm glad it helped and your welcome.
I realize it's kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new tv shows online ?

Yes, slice it lengthwise and use black atv silicone on bottom. I did that and mine is like new. LET SILICONE DRY before reinstall. :)

EXACTLY!!!! What I was looking for thanks for the great info.
Nice work. I've been having the same issue and now I know how to repair it.
Dude my Fordf150 had the same issue.Same wires setup as that through the door. Fixed mine today after watching a fellow RUclips er fix his truck.

FYI. Broken wires in the driver's side passenger door also cause issues with the passenger side front window.

Thanks! Fixed my dome light and window issue.
I did the same repair but I just cut a slit down the length of the boot instead of cutting it off, that way the wires are still protected and flexible.
Are u supposed to glue those boots on with somehow?
you could always use wetherstrip adhesive or a black silicone caulking.personally i would use the weatherstrip adhesive

Thanks for the video.
Does anyone know why I open the driver side door and it will not show door ajar on dashboard
Oh my radio is high pitched squealing with speakers in and out and a loud pop every once in a while if i can turn it on its so horrible and not high pitched when truck is turned off. Weird.
You the man Sr.
I put a new wire harness in and the door lock still doesn’t work

TamaquaArea.com Your welcome haven't had any more problems since I did the repair back in March.
Hi Chris. Do you have an update video of fixing the actual harness?
Martin Alcaraz No sorry I have not got around to it yet.
CHRIS10077 Ok. Thanks for the response
what sizes is the rear speaker
very useful video, i just got the exact same problem with my 2003 dodge ram 2500
So you did this repair job three years ago...how is it holding up? I have three or four broken wires in my door I need to fix and this is exactly how I would do it, but does it last?
Adam Butler-Cole I have had to revisit and repair couple of wires since.
CHRIS10077 I just did mine a couple days ago, just like this. If it lasts a year I'll be happy. Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks, you saved me a whole lot of trouble!!!!!
+sslunger2113 Your welcome.
Thank you for this video!!
You Da Mann!!! This was exactly the problem! Thanks So Much!
what i did was i took the plastic off the door then took the speaker out pushed the rubber sleave threw the door have more room very easy with out damage the harness all my wireswhere broke fixed all the wires
Thank you brother. I actually though it was the motor and bought one. little did I know the wires were cut. Oh well either way new motor
It is too bad that Ram does not hire some decent electrical engineers. Wiring is Ram's only problem. Between the lights, rear door wiring, and blower motor connector, the wiring sucks.
Yeah a ribbon cable would of been ideal. Thats designed for flexing and bending.
Yes sir! I appreciate ya ! Thank you.
I just slid the boot back and took butt connectors and put the wires back together. Then slid the boot back
good stuff buddy. I'm going to do mine that way too. honestly who cares about the factory look the electric tape is fine looking.
Good explanation good fix
Thank you!
Having Same Issue On My 2004 Ram
I THINK A GOOD PAIR OF EMBROIDERY SCISSORS ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHARP POINTED TIPS WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT THEY ARE SHARP AS HELL AND CUT THROUGH THICKER STUFF THAN THIS LIKE BUTTER..
Both of my oh shit bars along the windshield broke off ..
thnx going to try this today
Did you just knock the lawnmower guy out and continue with the video guide? Nice video!
i KNEW that's what happened..... I just knew it......
Hey thanks for the video!!! I love dirty fixes and man this saved my onion, and hey this isn't that dirty I think its a great fix!! now using merrets that's a dirt fix

Nothing Wrong With That Fix Buddy !!!!
Geno's Garage has them cheaper than a dealer...
Well done Thanks
$49 on amazon now
It's just copper wires 🙄, solder some speaker wires and be done with it.
This is a major dodge issue lol same goddamn thing happened to mine 04 1500
Thanks you so much
excellent!!!!!
Thanks
There is nothing wrong with your fix. What would be wrong is to spend the money to buy a new harness that is going to do the same thing again.
Dodge should come clean and fix all these crappy harnesses FREE of charge with proper wire that will last.
You spend 30,000 or more for s truck and this is the crap they are proud of and want you to buy.....come on Dodge.....get your act together. I'm sick of these auto makers turning out nice looking expensive vehicles that don't stand up.
johnspartan98 My sentiments exactly!
