  • Gargantuan luau dinners and Hawaiian pizza have nothing to do with authentic Hawaiian cuisine. Originally a simple diet based around root starches and fish, chefs in Hawaii are combating clichés and crafting Hawaiian menus that are more in harmony with those of their ancestors. Mark “Gooch” Noguchi is one such chef. Join him as he fishes with food practitioners and rediscovers the food of Hawaii’s past.

    I feel like the title is misleading to anyone who don’t know about Hawaii or Hawaiian culture so I’m hoping my explanation can help for this video. Yes, they have a motor on the boat, or using plastic utensils, and other modern day things. Its 2019!!! No one builds canoes out of Koa wood anymore for many reasons. These guys have jobs and other activities to provide for their families. A lot of people think they fish like this everyday for a living, but they don’t. I’m sure if they had the time to do everything like the ancient hawaiians did, they would. The whole concept here is understanding the practices and teaching. The practice here is fishing using the same type of net and strategy they used in ancient hawaiian times. Learning is understanding how things are done and why they’re done, like he said, cannot take a spear cuz they will swim away, but they will stay for food. Ancient practices such as this and making an imu(underground oven) are done with modern tools, but the strategy and concept is the same. Hope this helps. Aloha!!!

    These sometimes make me wish i was born 5000 years ago, in a place like this, just family and a fire, the guys going and getting the fish, the women tending the garden, and everyone cooking together. Our new high tech world has its benefits, and i have so much education, i know things about the universe that no one could have imagined just 100 years ago - i have entertainment and the collective knowledge of all of mankind at my fingers. But it doesn't make me happy. It might give me a sense of superiority, but what does it matter if I'm superior and sad.
    Maybe this feeling comes from the dissonance between my mom's long bloodline of farmers, and my dad's long bloodline of upper class intellectuals. I can't choose a path.
    I do wish i was happy though. And they really seem happy. Maybe I'm an anachronism

      Though the setting is idyllic, polynesia 5000 years ago the island life was a harsh environment run by warring inter-island dynasties, where breaking rules was tapu and meant life and death and to have mana was everything. Wars happened between, villages, districts, islands and empires even. There was no escaping, village life was everything albeit very harsh. It wasn't until Christianity was introduced it mean the downfall Polynesia, culture.

      may i have your cardnumber?? Let me make this clear, Hawaiians and Filipinos are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CULTURES I don't mean to sound rude it just pisses me and true Hawaiians off that people think that like?!! No Filipino is apart of Asian culture and Hawaiian is apart Polynesian culture.

    Wouldn’t documenting the knowledge preserve the techniques for later generations. So, if it (anything) is not practiced, but properly documented, then it’s simply dormant.

    • @0828daniel
      @0828daniel 5 лет назад +3

      fary ghiff you super ignorant. I live on Oahu. Normal life like everyone else. Work at a resort, pay bills, go grocery shopping. On the weekends me and the boys go out and dive, throw net, to harvest the proteins. Grandma get the veggies growing in the back yard, starch usually rice or Poi or Taro. We do buy other things like chips, juice, soda, steaks. I live on the north shore of Oahu. Small, modern island. The big island a little different. Not many stores, so I would believe they would harvest or hunt for their food more often than going to the grocery store.

      Oh please. Ancient Hawaiians had motor boats back then. They were also Japanese, not Polynesian. Ancient Hawaiians were Japanese.
