Every modified vehicle is a waste of a vehicle to someone. Heck, there are people out there that would call any vehicle a waste of metal, glass, and plastic. 😅 I happen to think stance cars are trash... and that includes squat trucks. But that doesn't mean we as a community ought to shun these outliers. They too are part of the broader community of people that exercise the option to express themselves by driving something built for them. Kinda like banging fat chicks... it's nasty, but if that makes you happy... 😊

People that roll coal are such a small minority of the population that it is not even worth the effort to complain. We have much more important things to worry about. Maybe you should reflect on what you do in your life that bothers others and try to improve yourself. Live and let live.

    • @tjroelsma

@@davidclemens1578 Ehm, no. People who are DELIBERATELY polluting as much as they can just because they're assholes actually are a priority in my opinion.
It's this mentality that has people "rolling coal", deliberately driving polluting semi trucks BECAUSE they refuse to cooperate with what they call an environment hoax that greatly damages what people who do cooperate with the EPA can achieve.
One vintage semi truck will pollute at least as much as 20-25 EPA compliant trucks. So this statistically very small group does immense damage to the efforts of the majority and in my opinion that needs to be addressed.

My only guess as to why hot-shotters and others that live in their vehicle know they're about to quite literally drive the thing into the ground. Spending an extra $10-50k to be slightly more comfortable probably eats into the profit margin too much, plus when stuff breaks thats less time to be driving and making money. Its just a tool: same reason there isn't bluetooth, chrome, heated grips, and a cooling fan on your impact gun.

I do mobile mechanic work and I love my work truck trim truck. The less features it has the less that can break. Mine doesn’t even have onstar. Hot shots have the job of maximizing profit. So spending an extra $15,000 for features is $.04 a mile they lose. Assuming a 1000 mile day that’s $40 a day.

Emissions - particulates. Over the past decades it has been found (simplified somewhat)
If anything gets in your lungs its bad for you.
The smaller things are that get in your lungs the worse they are and they may be able to enter your body.
So dirty diesel was based on visible smoke coming from the exhaust - obviously bad for your health as everyone could see it.
The regulators created rules over the years that removed the visible smoke and the weight of the particles.
The only problem was the way the industry met these regulations effectively made the particles smaller and lighter - which meant they were worse for health - but the exhaust looked better.
This was eventually solved by laws that effectively required particulate filters. These are AWESOME for removing diesel exhaust particles.
Rolling coal goes counter to all of these regs. Even though the "coal smoke" is so BIG that you nose will filter it out, it is so counter to the idea of cleaning up the air
Also it is so OBVIOUS the regulators HAVE to crack down on it and once they start looking somewhere, they go looking elsewhere, and so the whole modifying industry comes under the microscope.
So keep your DPF working well, go on the highway with a trailer so that it can regen naturally due to high exhaust temps, use a high quality oil as it is more likely to have lower ash levels that will clog up the DPF. An exhaust backpressure gauge may be good to have, so that you can see it filling up (creating backpressure) and so know when to go for a nice country run to clean it up again. Lower backpressure is always nicer, but always with the DPF being there.
With SCR (DEF) and DPFs the manufacturers are now able to start removing EGR etc and clean up the exhaust after the engine.
This means they can go back to improving the performance, fuel economy reliability etc while STILL meeting the emissions regs - good for EVERYONE, - except those that love a smokey exhaust.
The Cat C13D is the first "clean" sheet engine design I know off since this time and it really starts to show where diesel (from the factory) can get to when using SCR & DPFs.
Adept Ape did an interview with the lead designer on RUclips look him up.
Finally (at last) If you are around ANYTHING for a reasonable amount of time that has small particles WHERE A MASK.
That can be spray painting, cement (dry concrete, mortar), grinding (almost anything), asbestos (cement sheet from before the '90's), etc etc. look on the package
Black lung (coal), Asbestosis & mesothelioma (asbestos, ), Silicosis (silica from stone - natural and manmade - things like benchtops) are ALL horrible ways to be sick and die.
Diesel particulates where found to be bad due to studies on the health of railway workers that worked around locomotives - all very real.
Its like roulette every time you are around them. It is possible for a weekend warrior, but VERY real and more likely for an industry worker.

I have a 2021 L5P Duramax, I did the pulsar and ct3 kit. NIGHT and DAY difference. Banks stuff is great obviously he is one of the best diesel engineers out there. I chose mine based on being removable and the better screen and I dont regret it. I debated doing the flash and trans tune recently, but I had the pulsar before that came out. Being able to adjust throttle response, boost, speed limiter, manual regens and more. The truck lacks so much in response and power but those upgrades make the truck drive so much better and like a dream. Good luck! Also my favorite feature is the digital rear view mirror, what a game changer on a truck this big.

Dodge/Ram's top trim is usually called "Limited" but now they have the Tungsten coming in the newest variants. There's also the Laramie and the Longhorn, that also feature a lot of goodies. Also, the 10 speed in the GMC isn't really an Allison, its the same corporate GM 10 speed that they developed with Ford, and Allison just signed off on using the name. Though GM's 10 speed has been reliable for most, where as Ford can't seem to catch a break with its programming. While mechanically both are fine, Ford can't seem to program a transmission to save their vehicles.

I have the exact same truck except mine is a 2023. I went with the Banks Derringer almost immediately, 80 hp and 140 ft lbs more than the stock 445 hp and 910 torque. Several weeks ago I added the Banks cold air intake and holy S**** the intake really woke the engine up. Best part was my regeneration mileage more than doubled. I was only getting 250-300 miles between regens before the intake and now I am close to 700 miles towing my 15k fifth wheel. Monitor your soot load with the Edge, some guys have killed their DPF's with too much soot from a dirty Edge tune, not so much the programmer you have, but the Edge that piggy backed onto the ECM.

Hotshot drivers tend towards the base models for a couple reasons:
    1) They're often Enterprise commercial leases, and that's what Enterprise buys. Leasing wouldn't usually make sense, except modern diesel pickups are.... Modern diesel pickups. They're good until they break suddenly and catastrophically, leaving you stranded, and are then in the shop for an eternity waiting on parts. Enterprise leases, however, when they break suddenly and catastrophically leaving you stranded, comes with a replacement from Enterprise's rental fleet, so you just call your insurance company, transfer from the dead truck to the loaner, slap your stickers on the side, hook the trailer and scoot. This means your ownership costs per month are fixed and predictable, which is a safer way to run a business, even though the expense is higher. Plus, if you're getting a shiny new truck every 2 years on lease, you're going to hit statistically fewer of those catastrophic failures. Plus, Enterprise charges *per mile*, and you also charge per mile.
    2) Chrome doesn't pay the bills.
    3) Because they're company trucks and the boss isn't gonna pay for higher trims.

Diesels are efficiency monsters. Most setups have to sit on one side of the scale, MPG or HP&TQ, but with proper turbo control and fuel mapping a diesel can lift the entire scale, raising power and economy together. Using all of the fuel makes power easier, there's a whole science of over fueling robbing heat from combustion and reducing output. The more complete burn you get, the more power you get, Banks has pretty well figured out the formula, one of the few companies getting insane numbers while maintaining 50 state street legal emissions compliance on most of their parts.

On diesels, black smoke is not unburned fuel, it is burned fuel. It is caused by burning too much fuel which jacks up EGTs and leaves massive carbon deposits both of which cause premature engine wear. A well tune diesel should produce little to no black smoke.

Too much is fuel is literally partially burned fuel. There is too much fuel to completely burn in a combustion cycle, hence, black smoke, incompletely burned petroleum. Same thing on gas engine, run them fat and they smoke and you smell fuel, just like a diesel. Racing diesels in Europe, from trucks to road racing cars, you barely see smoke

My wife tends to encourage me too much, I'm usually the one saying "Nah, I don't need that" She's been after me to buy a new truck for years, but my ugly 7.3 Powerstroke still works just fine. I made a flatbed, and even added a boat ladder to help step up into the bed, LOL. I don't daily drive my truck, so I cannot justify paying $1000/month for something that's just going to sit in the field until I need it.

A friend got a V8 diesel engine and at stock, it is 730HP (metric HP) but on a full tune they got it up to 1500HP (metric HP) and a little bit but the extra cooling powerpack could not keep up with its extra heat so they turned it down to 1300HP (metric HP).
He can have 3 settings 730, 900 and 1300HP and at 1300HP going uphill even with the extra cooling pack he can overheat the exhaust system to it glowing red - there is a stage 2 or 3 water cooling kit he could fit.
Not sure if he swapped out his drive shaft with a carbon fibre one - the last time he did it it cost £25,000
Also with that amount of power, he has greatly reduced oil change times.
500 American is approximately 450HP metric...
Watch the top gear clip when Richard Hammond's 500HP Mustang got HP tested - that is the difference between the two

We proved 20yrs ago on the TDR during many "Dyno-Days" meets, that Gayle Banks is a liar and his Banks kits only produced half their claims. No wonder they were "Warranty Friendly", kinda. That's why I loved 25yrs ago being a test-pilot on my Cummins 24v, for a fledgling company back then called Edge products.

I live in a rural area with a bunch of little brains that love to delete all the emissions crap off their trucks, put on soup can exhausts, add 4" lifts, and low-profile tires. Things that make them basically unusable to do "truck things." They simply live to roll coal on everyone driving a Tesla, Prius, or any other EV or LEV they can find.
It's refreshing to see that someone that actually knows a thing or two about autos say "stop it."

You can go fast in a diesel truck. Your tires, however, can't. They have a speed limit that creates problems when you pass it. That's where a lot of tires overheat and disintegrate, given not as much time as you might think. And truck tires, they're expensive.

i am confident in saying dpf and def are a net negative. just tune the truck better, there have been people that have had parts fall off and then get a tune and it runs just as good if not better.
