    Jared, a few thoughts....
    1. The tach could just be a wiring/grounding problem...
    2. The exhaust could be a clogged catalytic converter...
    3. Would coil-overs, whether new or used be a solution..?
    4. I personally would like to see you DIY most everything needed to be fixed, coz I know you have a lot of experience doing stuff, and it would be REAL... 🤔😁😁😁
    Just keep going onwards... 😊

Any part that is not compatible with MX6, check FC RX7. They literally took both those to make the Probe's. The headlights can probably be fixed with FC headlight parts, and the regulator parts could be that as well. Also, drop the air blower down and clean that box out, the rat nest is probably in there.

That said you revving it without an oil change gave me anxiety, but thats just me. Great little build series and I would love to see it be a fun Lemons car, but I am torn like you, in wanting to see just how nice this can be for $2500.

I had a 1994 Ford Probe that I drove for about 20 years. While it's not identical to this one, it was very similar and watching you tear it apart brings back memories. I had the same thing happen to the driver side window regulator on my car. It had manual windows and I couldn't find the correct regulator, but I did find a Probe with power windows in a junkyard. I pulled its regulator installed it in my car. Then I had to figure out how to wire up a 2-way switch to move the window up and down. I also pulled the rear disc brakes off that junkyard car and converted my car to 4-wheel disc brakes.

Ive had 50ish cars in my life. My 1989 Probe GT just like yours is the only one I regret getting rid of. Eprom flash + bleed valve to the Wastegate set to 14psi= 300ft torque. So fun. Im your size and its so comfortable. I want it. One thing. WHEN your wipers decide to park straight up in your line of sight. There are two connectors by wiper motor. One winter and one summer. They park them above the hood line to allow for ice or below the hood line to look better. Whichever one fails just put it too the other setting and the will go back down. I had two buddies with these as well and both did the same thing. Love this content.

    Hey Jared
Regarding the tachometer, old 80's/90's electronics usually suffered corrosion on the electronic parts
The tachometer has an additional suffering point, there are 2 pots on the circuit board, one is for sensitivity the other for sweep bias
Those pots are open so dust n grime gets in there and the system gets affected
Simple clean out will sort it, the pots note it's position then give them a quick twist back n forth while spraying in contact cleaner or if it's real bad... Compression stabliser followed with distilled water and compressed air
Once calibration pots reset back to original position, grab the wife's nail polish and give the board and pots a coat to seal it up.... Avoid metallic colours only Matt, gloss, clear or tinted clears.....

As someone who has owned 3 Gen 1 Probes, fix it up nice and keep it alive. There aren't many left and the one you have is fairly desirable, option-wise. It would be a shame to make it a lemons car.

  • @802Garage

I think including general purpose fluids in a budget goes a bit far because then what, every time you squirt WD-40 you add $0.10? I think if you use an entire can of brake clean or a quart of oil for example, those are part of the budget. Using a little grease out of a gun, that's just a small expense that can be left off the balance sheet. Did you buy a foot of fuel hose? That counts. Used a spare bolt from your bolt bin? Doesn't count.

A friend of mine had one of those. Mechanically, it was pretty sound. Interior was shot. Very little rust. He pulled the seats, ripped all the carpet out and replaced it with sound dampening and indoor/outdoor charcoal black carpet, same on the door panels, rattle canned the plastics, then found cheap seat covers for the front seats and attached a blanket he found to the back seat. It actually turned out nice. he put the indoor/outdoor carpet on the roof also as the new headliner.

I had this car back in the day. Loved it and miss it.
When my driver’s side window reg failed (out of warranty) Ford Service shop quoted me $600 (30 years ago) to repair…mostly labor. The service manager explained that the inner door skin had to be removed which required drilling out all of the spot welds. I never ended up fixing it.
I also had the broken exhaust manifold stud issue.

I never paid any attention to the Probe until the second gen body came out. After seeing one on the road, I found immediately ordered one to my spec, and got one of the first 93s in Aug 92. Basically a 2 door Mazda 626, hatchback area worked great to haul 2 mountain bikes to the trails.

I'd say fix it up, and just enjoy it and drive the heck out of it. A BTTF clone would be neat, I guess, but...meh. There's just so few Probes on the road anymore, much less a manual first Gen turbo. Yeah it has issues, but it has a lot of potential (despite the rust)! The headliner can be a cheap, fun, and easy fix, with a quick trip to your local craft store for some fresh black cloth and a can of spray adhesive. Naturally, you've got the mechanical and electrical stuff covered. It looks like it'll shape up to be a good, fun, low budget project.

I absolutely love this series! I might be biased but I'm so glad to see a probe on RUclips! I mean I also would love to see you restore it without a budget, but it's not exactly the best candidate for that. If you are unable to find a good set of the window rail guides I have a good pair of windows with the glass side hardware that have been sitting taking up space for years. Its also not recommended to remove the brackets from the glass because getting them lined back up is a pita. If that probe has the adjustable suspension youll be oit of luck to replace it with the original adjustable struts as to the best of my knowledge that has been out of production for at least a decade
But i absolutely cannot wait to see what direction you take the car!

I used to have a probe. They have a major problem. While sitting at idol warming up it will overheat/trip the fuel shutoff switch. It will idol fine but as soon as you go to take off it will cut the fuel. Only 2 options to resolve the issue is to either turn the car off for 10-20 minutes to let the shutoff switch reset, or complete bypass the switch located inside by the driver side rear tire.

  • @chriswf

This looks EXACTLY like the 1 I used to own. Mine was painted black (a good paint job) but the original color was champagne.
I went with doubly ply silicone tubing on most things in the engine bay. Including the intake. All of those plastic sensors are SUPER brittle. Like glass.
Also the burnt hood - likely from the heatshield (I also removed mine). The turbo used to glow red lol.
I swapped out the electrical suspension for a quality full suspension kit.
Changed the 2ohm radio to 4ohm.
The plan was the swap the f2t out for some other mazda engine that was a direct swap but I never got around to it.
The interior of that car is really cool. Scrunchy shifter, huge knob for flip up lights, etc.
The hatch space is HUGE, I fit a whole table in there. Could probably put a bed back there with the rear seats down.

31:22 You know Jared with that knock sensor, I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't mouse related. Chewed wire definitely or even a dead mouse in there. Snake skin too. When my uncle had his car in a field, it became a mouse mecca. That lafter became a snake mecca. The snakes would get inside the vehicle, shed their skin and eat the mice and rats. The sloughed off skin got inside mufflers, airboxes, glove compartment, under seats. He found 12 snake skins inside the car. 3 were from a huge diamondback.

Jared-if I bid a job and sell it, unless I messed up the bid, all materials are included… if I’m doing repairs on one of my vehicles, I include an estimated sum for all the parts/fluids/thread lock/shop towels/cleaners and all that jazz. The only thing I don’t figure in is electricity and labor.
It’s only fair to assume those in your total investment because if you use them, replacing them has to come from somewhere down the road. It’s definitely fair to include brake clean and all those incidentals in your budget! :)

As for the expenses I guess I would add both the little things like brake clean on a seperate list and the actual parts like fuel line and actual parts for the car. Since you wanted to do a budjet like a teem would have done. Most would only count the actual parts used on the car not the small stuff like stripping and reconnecting the wire with a connector that you may or may not have lying around.
As for the direction of the impulse project itself what I think you could do is pretent this is your first car. It is kinda cool you know there is issues and go about getting as creative as you can. Possibly look on the market place for a old dryer some one is giving away for free and use that metal to fix some of the sheet metal problems. I cant wait to see what ideas you can come up with this car.

From experience, my immediate guess is that the fuel leak is from a rusted out portion of sending or return line on top of the tank. If you're lucky it will be accessible from the access door. If not, you can always just run a fresh rubber hose over the tank to bypass it. Drove my 1993 Impreza around like that for 6 years or so no issues.

Jared PLEASE don't make that thing as fugly as the car from Back to the Future. As much as I LOVE the series, and I am 40 now, but I would really like to see this thing turned into an earlier Probe GT clone (the ones that came with the KLZ V6), with the full ground effects and maybe even aftermarket paint matched bumpers with some really nice, clean, and good looking wheels. I really haven't seen a good looking Probe for many years. There was a time in the late 90s, early 00s that the Probe GT with the V6, or even the turbo 4 cylinder was a cool car to have. I drove a Probe GT once that had the 2.5 24V V6 and it was fun, but not very surprising.

One of my favorite automotive memories is driving my fathers 1993, 6 speed manual Probe GT, (the other body style) it was a an amazing handing car. The Mazda V6 in that car was just a brilliantly smooth and very high revving master piece. As much as I love Mustangs, they just never had that handling (up to 1993 at least) I like the Impulse-Probe Jared and no matter what it is an excellent build to show the new generation of enthusiasts a budget conscience approach to fix up cars.

I love this car. I think the Radwood route is perfect. It's too good to do the BttF tribute or LeMons. With your budget that might stretch possible but this car epitomizes that era. I was 13 and though I was very into classics, muscle cars and exotics like most teens, I loved the Probe and MX-6 both.
I think you should keep a Google Docs spreadsheet and keep a link on your videos as you progress through the build. Put a tab for parts and a tab for incidentals like fluids, fasteners, etc that every build uses but usually aren't included in cost but in this build I think their relevant

I appreciate your transparency. I would say most of us, IF we are actually fixing or flipping cars, would have wire repair tools connectors solder and the like.
I would love to see an honest le'mons car build. Heck, even go as far as to add a little that you know you'll be able to negotiate or finnagle over. Many of us are new to the world and would appreciate some guidance on the in outs and how tos of discretionary negotiations with an inspector.

  • @jayman4095
    @jayman4095 6 месяцев назад +1

I definitely can say there's a balance between the time lapse and then showing the work done in real time with the door a great time to explain and just talk and chit chat but for dropping the fuel tank unless it's showing how to drop one in an all-wheel drive Mercury Montego that's a good candidate for the time lapse (I'm only being oddly specific because I just had to deal with that and welcome to the 7th realm of hell on that car). Not to mention further explaining on certain tasks being done is kind of good for all the viewers that don't know all their p's and q's for working on cars.

I have *some* cans laying around, but I think it's reasonable to get fresh cans... I don't have them by the case! Half a can of brake clean won't fix a mess, so I'll be heading out to top up. That's how I ended up working at a parts store!

I would say, only include prices for consumables if you don't have it laying around or you empty something and have to buy it new. Most of us probably have a leftover can of something and use that before buying it new. That seems the most realistic to me.

As far as injectors go, I’d pull them out and clean them. Even if u don’t have a cleaner like legit streetcars has, I’d just let them soak in something like berrymans or whatever good strong non ethanol solution and reinstall with new orings. I’ve revived plenty of cars(5+ years sitting) and never had to replace injectors. After two tanks of fuel they really seem to smooth out. Also, if one is broken or housing cracked, etc, there’s probably many cars that use the same injector and one at the junkyard shouldn’t cost you much. Goodluck with the build, I like it a lot!

Finally a build that won`t cost an arm and leg and the story is relatable. Like QA1, Holley stuff is great, and throwing a whole Summit catalogue on something is great, but this is something that`s more relatable and realistic financially

It's always the short slide pin because of the rubber wrapped around the slide pit you take the slide pin out you take the rubber out and you hon the boar and you practically have to do that every time you put new pads on the Ford probe has a very similar braking system like the Ford escorts I used to do that every inspection or year when I put on new brakes

im from the uk so parts costs are different but i feel like you should be able to have a seperate budget of like 500 dollars for essential maintinance. im 26 and have a renault clio if the car needs it it gets it simple as i dont make alot of money and me and my dad work on the car ourselves so we know its done right but things like fuel injectors shocks and tires are essentail maintinance in my opinion they are things that on any car fancy or basic you will always check when lookiing at purcchasing so its only far for you you to have a small amount of budget to cover those things that would or should be changed anyway. my clio is a gt which is rare and it had front end damage i took my time and fixed her and she is amazing had to spend about 400 pound there recently putting new tires on her as she sat over the summer not driving as i fixed control arms etc but when that essentail stuff is done it means in the future it wont be as much of a problem as you can track it so oh the fuel injectors were replaced x date so if they are leaking then something is wrong. if this is a real budget build then thats what i would do and things like the rust im sure you have some old shell of a car that has good panels that could be cut up cleaned and used as patch panels, we use to use quality street tins to fix my corsa i had years ago.

The headlights have a winter mode that locks them into up position. Looks like the button is missing on the light control. If the inner button is pressed in = winter mode. Not sure if that's the problem, but just a thought.

    • @TinoR626
      @TinoR626 5 месяцев назад

No the headlight do not have a winter mode, that's the wipers. The missing part is for the fog lights.
What you're referring to is to change out the bulbs and thst from the inner part you push in and roll back.

So, I crushed it. Then find out the next day all it actually was needed a CV axle. It was 60 bucks. it was the last car to finish a load to send to the scrap yard so the boss lied about it...I was PISSED.

How about rip interior carpet out. Pressure wash that interior- then put like a molded vinyl floor or fill it with spray rubber guard and some sound mat. Make a unique interior for the cheap. If needed, go with lightweight windows and such. Keep the Impulse theme - very cool as it is.
