    Every time I look to upgrade my car, something expensive breaks in my house. Last year, I went to a speed shop to get quotes on tuning. The next day, the furnace quit!
    This year, I looked at a parts catalog for suspension upgrades. Later in the week, my house was hit by lightning. No fires, but EVERYTHING electronic was fried. My wife won't let me talk about upgrades anymore 😂.

    I’ve never actually been under the hood of one of those cars before but I must say that is kind of an awkward setup with the brake booster all the way up towards the front of the car! Hopefully once you get the steering issue resolved it should be a lot more fun to drift with! Looking forward to seeing the outcome! Keep up the good work, Jared!

    • @ghomerhust
      @ghomerhust 10 месяцев назад +4

      that's not a normal thing. the booster was relocated in order to fit the big v8 in there. normally this car came with a 4cyl or in the fast versions, an inline 6, so the booster was mounted to the firewall as all other cars. this has a 4.x liter v8 from a 540i swapped into it, hence the problems he's facing today. the entire engine bay is messed with in order to fit that huge engine in the space that normally only fits a 2-3 liter inline engine.

      Research the BMW E34 chassis; 530i(3.0L v8) & 540i(4.0L v8). It's the O.E. remote mount location, again due to the limited space & "shoehorn" fitment of the DOHC v8s.

      @sanjeevsohal8954 10 месяцев назад +1

    Jared, for space in the engine bay how about relocating the battery into the boot. This was a factory solution for the 325i model. The space you gain might provide enough room for the power steering pump. You could then add a larger air box behind the head lights.

    With a properly sized master cylinder and a revised brake peddle lever that provides sufficient leverage and he could eliminate that crazy brake booster setup and just put a Baer master cyclinder back on the firewall. Manufacturers have just standardized on power brakes because consumers insist they need them. And yes, you will find more manual brake setups on drift cars than you will boosted brakes. Same with drag racing, road racing, Ultra4, desert racing, etc, etc....

    It is normal for the PS blow by valve 'aka' pressure regulator is on the pump , they will be different values as the rack act on larger area so pressure is lower. you could put a external one as done by landrover owner who fit tractor based high pressure pump steering systems aka the dual piston tractor rack mod.

    The E30 is such a fun platform for drifting. Just look at Jimmy Oakes and his car. I can't recall if his is caged but if its fun and works, use it for laps and leave the cage out. Make a seat time car with a cage that is comfortable for you and then take the time to make that work. Just use this to learn for now.

    people often (very often) ask me what to buy for their new college student. i say "get a camry or accord or something like that." and they ask, "but dont you drive a vw?" and i say "yeah, but i also own a toolbox." haha i love my goofy vws, but you gotta like turning wrenches to daily one of those. also, i refuse to own one newer than 1998...
    i just did the flappers in my heater box, and then 5 days later, the heater core broke haha, dash out TWICE in a week. yay. went quick tho, i was in the groove. this weekend, it's clutch time, and im thinking of swapping my rack as well, cuz in cold weather, the left turn direction is hard to do until the car is warm. i think it's the valve in the rack being dumb, cuz i replaced the pump and it still had the same symptom. but i have a full spare setup from another car i stripped, so im hoping to be able to get the clutch/slave done and the rack all in one day this weekend. i dun wanna mess with it this winter, too damn cold in nebraska!
    an exo-cage e30 v8 would make a nasty awesome drifter.....
    i gotta say, once you got those bugs ironed out, it really did sling those corners! with some tweaking its gonna be a top tier driver sled

    I loved that lil BMW since the first time I saw it on Car Trek. Now you said it, you're a big guy and it's a small car. And you're doubting that even if you gut it you'll have enough space for you and the cage. So, maybe keep her as the fun little car? Unless I'm wrong, it still is road legal, so maybe keep her fun on both the drift track and on the road. Also, I'm not sure what accepted or not as cars in drifting, I know that the modern GTO (aka Monaro) was a thing back then (thanks AMT for having done a GTO kit in Rhys Miller's livery when he drifted one in 2005; that's how I know GTO were a drift thing), but maybe that's still too small for you, so maybe another Charger if they can compete? Yeah, that's another Charger, but c'mon you can never have enough Mopars! Or maybe a Challenger?

    I've been fighting a dash lighting issue with my FC RX7 ever since I bought the car back in April 2019. I've had the light switch refurbished by a specialist, traced the wiring from the switch to the dash, and they still occasionally just go out. If I tap the dimmer rheostat, they will typically come back to life, so I'm quite sure it's the rheostat. Problem is, the rheostat is built into the headlight switch and that is factory sealed and next to impossible to open without permanent damage. NOS switches are available at a heckuva premium and I'd still be taking a chance on a 35-year old part. I'll keep swinging at it, though.

    At least that rack looks fairly easy to remove for all the fun repairs. Last rack I dealt with on a Subaru was a pile of poo to swap out.
    I’ve been tinkering on a few different non-running Subaru SVXs I picked up cheap to get running again, one had been stolen with its keys years ago and the thieves kept them when they ditched the car. Trying to get the ignition cylinder swapped out from my parts car has failed over and over 😂. It’s not worth the money to get a locksmith out and a previous owner had already swapped the ignition cylinder so it doesn’t match up to the rest of the car locks 😢

      E46 m3s arent cheap anymore haven't been for the last few years. You used to be able to get them for £6k but now your looking at £15k for a shit one. £20-25k for a good one. E36 m3s are also no longer cheap minimum of £13k for a shit one and £18k for a decent one. So really the only choice for a BMW is something like a regular e36 or e46 with a six cylinder. 330ci e46s and 328i e36s and early e46s are still from £1500 for a shitter to £5k for a minter

    Glad to see this little ripper back out shredding tires.

    Didn't really see what idler you used to fix the belt issue, but a power steering idler from a 2.5 jeep tj (the non power steering version) might work. Pretty standard power steering pump bolt pattern.

    Ohhhh Jared. You know ALL the issues I have with my car. But no amount of wrenching will fix the issues with my 43k mile 2019 vehicle as I'm sure it was built on a friday by an Italian.

    What happened with the name Plan B…(mw)?!? This should become a thrash car and build a new chassis, I like the idea of getting something with large aftermarket support as it will make your venture into drifting more enjoyable! Good luck!

    Car names… Der/Dein Driftwagen? as for fitting car. An E36/46 build with a V8 sounds like a lot of fun. I like the spirit of the idea. What if BMW did E90 things a couple gens earlier?

  • @goosegarage78
    @goosegarage78 10 месяцев назад +1

    If you want to solve the issue: go electric power steer. Yes it will mean you will need to mix n match but no over pressurizing from the V8.

    For what you'll be using the car, I'd go with a roll cage that doesn't have door bars. You won't be going into any kind of really competitive drifting, so having a bar down the A and B pillar will be more than enough for you.
    Some insulating foam around the bars near the roof for when you smack your helmet into it and it should be plenty good enough.
    Keep it cheap but reliable, do't overthink it for things it will never do.
    Haven't seen a drifting car bounce so much for ages, it looks like proper fun.
    As for the pronunciation of the words, use Google Translate, the speaker button will have them read it out for you and, while full sentences aren't that good, it does a good job of single words.
    The word means 'cooling water' btw, I prefer saying the word above it, it's more of a tongue twister. (and stands for windscreen water)

    yaeh, just trying old bmws for the first time, working on it often is no fun at all with the exception of electronics, the diag interface and software is really affordable. But they drive nicely. For your car: I'd finish dialing it in and then keep it that way. Parts are probably not that available and more expensive and there's always the risk of making it worse, especially by adding weight to a well balanced car. For regular thrashing, I'd build something with good parts supply, fun to work on and fitted for a cage with you in it.

    Frkm experience I vote for an E36 as a cage car or 350Z which are surprisingly roomy, but leave the E30 the way it sits because it's so good.
