I'm really happy to see someone with your skill and clout doing an 'every mans' build. We have too many RUclipsrs doing hypercar builds, or doing things that cost insane amounts of money and not really concerned with accessibility. What can a normal person with normal resources do to make their car more fun? I guess we'll find out soon...
@@Jurassic974 Point not gone unnoticed, but the chasm between them has widened, this is what wrench everyday was about in the beginning, everyday cars and budgets. Though I noticed the "Build it better" mantra returning on the P1, well done
Had a 96 Probe SE 5 speed. Absolutely loved that car...got it from a buy here pay here lot, and gave it back when i went into basic training for the army...wish i would have kept it. Wasn't the GT V6, but the 4 cyl in the SE was quick for what it was...and still had pop up headlights
Thank you. I must, maybe over the holidays 👍, especially seeing a second gen just sell for $20k on bring a trailer. Was original and low mileage. Mine is original, southern car, and original owner, but has been driven all over the east coast with 191k miles. Oh well. @@asideofbeans5803
Your idea is perfect, lots of RUclipsrs with their "budget" builds on this platform, it'll be refreshing to see an actual budget build and maybe take it to a grassroots racing event
It's definitely a survivor car, that's for sure. Looking forward to this old pseudo-JDM gem getting a second chance to shine. And honestly, I'd personally prefer seeing you bump the project budget up to 3k. That way, it'll still be a budget build, but you can also do a few nice things here and there to really make it a joy to own and drive.
I actually love the Ford Probe and the MX-6. I didn't realize they had a turbo option! This gen looks really cool, and the next gen looks just like an S13. The only downside for me is FWD. I just really wish they were RWD or AWD. Cool purchase fun project!
I always found it interesting that Mazda decided not to make an 4wd version of the 626 coupé (mechanically identical to this) nor did they make any of the 4wd models available in North America.
@@802Garage Yeah, Mazda has put out so many things that were so close to "could've been the best thing ever" but then made decisions, because reasons. The Group A 323 with a tiny engine or the MX-6/Probe/626 Coupé being fwd only...imagine that thing with 4wd (or rwd) and the 2.2 turbo. Or like the car a friend of mine had/built way back in the day, a 1980 or ´81 (I don't remember which) 929, slightly gutted with a 13B turbo rotary. That car was wild and a lot faster than unsuspecting people thought it was just by looking at it.
@@RLRSwanson The rotary engine itself! Could be even more amazing with further development, but obviously emissions and fuel economy make that very difficult. We still swapped a 13B into a BRZ and it is insanely fun.
Man what a cool time capsule. I'm obviously a bit of a mazda nerd, knew the probe was basically an mx6, but legit didn't realize that the 1g probe GT was available with an F2 turbo. That's really cool. Really look forward to you bringing this back around and actually driving it, Jared!
My older brother owned a 83 turbo thunderbird in 88. Younger brother owned a 93 turbo probe around 97. The thunderbird was quicker but the engine blew up twice in 2 year's. The probe engine still ran after 4 year's until it went to a new owner. Oil changes were expensive for the probe because the engineers made it a pain the get to the oil filters.
I bought an 89 Probe 2 days after release. May 14, 1988. People were mesmerized by that car. So futuristic looking inside and out. Looked like a spaceship. I miss that car!
Thank you for doing a ford probe. I remember first seeing one of the first models my freshman year in high school 89-90. One of my fellow students drove it to school. It was a private school so a new ford probe was on the low end of what was seen. I saw kids get picked-up from school in anything from exotic cars to limos. I rode a bicycle.
Awesome. Brings back memories. A buddy had a probe gt in the 90s. Aluminum shift knob, those big clunky aluminum pedals. Big 5" exhaust tip. Hks mushroom filter and a manual boot controller!
I drove an 85 Mazda 626 in the mid 90s. Loved it! Then I drove the 86 626 GT with the turbo and was amazed! Where my cars power peaked, the GT kept pulling! This will be a fun series to bring back all the memories of being 18.
The Jo-anne fabric near me does carry that kind of headliner material so I am sure they have it down there. They don't have a good selection of colors though.
I had a 1991 Probe GT. I had so much fun in that car. It was my intro to turbos and efi (first cars were a ’77 Chevelle and an 81 Mustang, not the good ones). So many good memories in that car. I had an old school piggy-back controller for bigger injectors and a bigger turbo. Hundreds of passes at the local drag-strip.
I had a '90 GT turbo. Under the battery tray is a power wire for the headlight motors, it gets frayed and shorts out, this burns out the headlight switch and the lights don't go down. This is a common problem that drove me crazy until I found it on mine. Also if things don't work and the fuse is good, twist the fuse blades slightly. For some reason they lose contact. There is also a pigtail wire next to the fuse box that you unplug and switch between summer and winter, this changes the nesting position of the windshield wipers. Just a couple cool things about a fun little car.
Great find Jared, I'm excited to watch the build! I hope it didn't get too rusty sitting in all that grass. I've owned 4 '89 Probe GTs over the course of 25 years, I'm currently 'restoring' a loaded '98k mile one I picked up a few years ago for nostalgic purposes lol. They are great cars with a bad rap, none of my Probes ever gave me problems and I drove all of them hard. Parts are not too easy to come by, not even on the Mazda side of things, but if you run into any dead ends or have any questions feel free to reach out and I'll share whatever I can. I have been putting together a document of all Ford and Mazda part numbers for this car so if by any chance you need a part number I'll be happy to share! I'm not sure if you're looking to spend the extra money on NOS parts but that has been all that has been going onto my car so far. Best of luck to you on the build! - Bryan
I had an 89GT, purple. A little higher boost and this thing was killing it back in the late 90s. Torque steer is nuts! I had that car for well over 10yrs. Still have alot of extra parts for it.
Ive wanted this. Im glad it was you. I was thinking when you showed the ceiling, I would just go to the fabric store and get that foam stuff, fabric glue , and red cotton soft fabric and throw it one. Omgods I love this. Cant wait for the next one.😍
Dad ordered a fast fun Probe after the 2.2l dodge charger he ordered in '84. Good times.. different. But good. The cluster moving with the wheel is nice. Enjoy it, few are that nice these days.
Years ago we had a 1990 Escort GT that had that same "what gear am I in?" shifter option. I dont remember exactly what I did to fix it, but I think there was a bushing kit or something I installed to tighten the pattern back up.
I've done a lot of work on a first gen GT. They are a ton of fun to drive. Hope you refresh this beauty and maybe get some nice upgrades to bring it's power up some.
Thats interesting how Ford USA took a Mazda engine and slapped it into a body they designed themselves. Here in Australia we had the Ford Telstar TX5 which was basically a Mazda 626 with the same engine as yours. We also had a baby version called the Ford Laser TX3 which again was based on a Mazda 323 but it came out as either a FWD Turbo or 4WD Turbo. They were really popular back in the late 80's/late 90's but now they're rare as
“A 16-year-old’s first tuner car”, my first car when I was 16 was a Ford Probe. It was a super fun car for a kid and great to drive around when you had nothing to do. It still had 4 seats, which was great because only about half of my friends had cars. I often joke about getting another Probe, but I’m currently driving a Pontiac Fiero, which scratches the same itch.
Back in the day you could get these to make a lot of TQ with some minor upgrades. They were impressive considering it’s a SOHC 4 cyl with ancient electronics. The air flow sensor are a limit, along with the factory glass transmissions
Around 2000, I tried restoring an old turbo Probe like this. I quickly gave up as parts for this car were very expensive. Hope you have good luck finding the parts you need at a reasonable price
I can't wait to see what comes from this. The probe got a lot of garbage due to being the "mustang replacement", and frankly, because of the name Probe... I owned one. 92 GT. My 2nd favorite of any car I've owned. For the time they handled actually pretty well, and yes, I know some people don't like FWD, but grab a Gen 1 Turbo Manual or a Gen 2 GT manual, and the car was quick (for it's time) and handled fantastically. Look at old car mag reviews and you'll see this thing held it's own quite well against it's 2 door "sporty" coupes quite well.
In 1991 one of my friends purchased a Probe. Just like this car as a two year old example. He loved the car and endured much ribbing about it. I had a sign shop print me some "Anal" decals in matching font and everywhere the car said "Probe", I added the "Anal" decals. 3 years later when he sold the car, the "Anal" decals were still proudly in place.😇
Probes are a lost gem of the 90's. My dad bought a '93 GT with a manual when I was in high school. I loved driving that car and it managed to stick around for about 10 years and 150,000 miles. We drove that thing hard as well, outside of a few things like a new water pump and and other odds and ends, was really reliable. Good power for their time and especially the second gen handled fantastically. Glad to see one of these show up on your channel!
The turn signals & controls are like my '89 RX-7, so if you can't find "Ford" parts you can always raid the Mazda parts bin. Probe was actually a fun little car. My sister had one for a while & it worked just great for around town stuff. I like the plan for it, clean it up & make it a good putt putt. That's really all it's meant to be. Just do me a solid & keep the 80's graphics & old stuff. It's just too cool.
As the person with the world record holding stock engine/trans probe GT, I can say he made a good choice despite what other people might think. Cars are indestructible once they are running well. I make 415whp/440wtq at 32psi with an HX35. Went 11.97@118.4mph. On Drag Radials. On a 100*f day with 140* track temps and a 7000ft DA. Only mods to the engine, are head studs and valve springs. Trans has an LSD, and a good clutch. The point of all this isnt to brag about my car, But to brag about the robustness of this chassis. The Mazda F2T engine with good fuel, and a good tune is basically indestructible. The trans with an LSD has proven to be tough. Like Toyota e153 tough. Some people have broken gears but I think that is more driving than power because this year alone, I have 122 data logs saved, with 30 or 40-130 pulls. 27 dyno runs. And 16 quarter mile passes, without a single broken part. I changed the oil once, and use good Valvoline VR1, and I changed the spark plugs once. Done right, you will have a reliable low 12 high 11 second car, that will rarely break if you know how to drive, and will gap almost anything on the street. Coyote mustangs, done. SS Camaros? Done. C5 Corvettes? Done. I've taken on CTS-V's, a Ferrari testarossa, which was a really random and fun encounter lol. I want more people to understand despite the name, and not necessarily looking good to some people, they were a very advanced, quick, economical and robust car for their day.
Currently working on restoring my own '95 Probe GT. The community is small, but strong. I also picked up my Probe on an impulse buy. Saw the Facebook Market Place ad when i was on an away job. Messaged the guy, sent a small deposite after chatting with the seller a bit and getting to see some extra videos. Picked up the car as soon as i was back home from my job. Already got parts ordered in. Ebay Motors will be your friend for parts! I got both pairs of the pop up headlight plastic bezels shipping to me from Europe.
So cool! Those were fun little cars for what they were. I love your channel because of the variety of things you work on. I know you’re a Toyota guy, if you ever want an odd ball, I’ve got a solid T100 4x4 that needs some love. 😂
I remember these, I thought they were a kind of space age design for the time. Also, remember them being made for Ford by Mazda, too. Re: "The Mazda MX-6 is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Mazda from 1987-1997 across two generations. [1] Mechanically identical to the Ford Probe, the Capella/626 and its hatchback platform mate, the Ford Telstar, these cars shared the GD (1988-1992) and GE (1993-1997) platforms."
As for your inquiry I can tell you the best budget setup that you can possibly do. Put a nice clutch in it. And then weld a T3 flange to the factory manifold, drill a hole in it 38 mm wide or larger, and weld a 38 mm external wastegate flange. Bolt on a T04b 50 trim, with an upgraded 360° thrust. Use a 10an Drain to the pan. Get a probinator chip, and a socketed 89 ECU, get a walbro 255, and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, set your base pressure to 60 psi. Stock 330cc injectors, will do about 250 WHP At 16-17 PSI. I wouldn't go much further than that, as you will be out of fuel, and timing is pretty aggressive with the factory ECU. The chip doesn't change the timing. Just fueling. And eliminates the factory boost cut at 12 psi. If you try and modify it with a stock turbo, the factory RHB5/VJ 11 turbo grenades constantly. Better to just upgrade the turbo right off the bat, have the injectors cleaned, make sure the engine is healthy and you have a decently sized exhaust, put a cone filter on the vam, and boom. Reliable 220-250 horsepower rocket ship with 270-300 ft lb of torque at the tires. If you can figure out the welding yourself this setup is going to cost you around 1,500 bucks. If upgrading the intercooler with an eBay bit with some eBay piping is in the budget, I would recommend a small front mount upgrade.
You know what a good name would be for it 😂 This is going to be a fun little build for sure Now if you could find a Isuzu impulse rs to go with it you have radwood locked down
I owned FIVE of these '89~'92 probe GT's yes, I know😂its ridiculous) My first one I got, I was in highschool- These really were surprisingly quick! But as a highschooler's very first vehicle?! It was a DAMNED fast car!lol As I got older and wiser and after owning a few of them, I finally learned how the wastegate operated by way of the "boost reference line" and fabbed up my own adjustable valve in order to make a poor man's manual boost controller which worked very well considering However afterquickly reaching about15 psi, the "vane airmeter"was maxed out In other words the dreaded "fuel cut" was reached- the injectors could no longer provide enough fuel to compensate for all the added boost. Now, whether or not this "fuel cut " was from the vane meter maxing out and no longer providing a good signal to the ECU, OR if it was from the fuel injectorssctually maxing out and could no longer physically provide any more fuel, I never found out, but I DID find iut the only intelligent way to get around it was to ditch the stock ford EECIV (ECU)and go with a "stand alone"ECU" Ive Seen fantastic results on RUclips and also read about great results on forums that the "Mega squirt and Mega squirt JR. work very, very well especially considering how affordable they are (just search "ademanster" on Y T.: his knowledge : on those cars ('89~'92probe GT/Mazda MX6GT,and his knowledge on the Mazda F2T engine in General is arguably unsurpassed 👍 I hurt a lot of feelings😅 back when I had my PGT it could be shockingly quick with just very basic modifications By the way the shifter bushingsthat cause all that slopare located on the very bottom of the shift lever (easier access from under the car it's right above the resonator, which is about mid-way down the exhaust pipeand the "bushings" are just stiff rubber "inserts", one on each sideof course theyrno longer available from Ford though you might luck out from on online parts retailer, Back when I had all of mine the internet hadn't been around anywhere near long enoughto establish any real knowledge about the ford PGT, or it's sister car, the Mazda Mx6GT. Much less any info on the F2T From MY experiences with them, I know that little 2.2 12valve is,kind of an oddball engine, BUT it's damn tough-its an "old school design, with a stout iron block and a closed deckand the rods also seem to be pretty beefy, from all I could tell after pouring on the boost, beating the hell out of it, and inspecting everything during disassembly Another thing- the transmission is fairly tough -the gears are comparatively thickBUT the differential side gears may cause problems down the road after you start making some power, they start to press outward and the steel "pin" that they ride on will start sliding out of the carrier assembly and then as it rotates, it tears into the soft aluminum trans. Case, quickly wearing away the inner wall, ruining the trans case, and allowing all of the trans. Fluid to leak out. I've read that thesteel "pin' can be welded on, in order to keep it in place so that it doesn't start walking or sliding out of place -OH- and inside the transmission. The shift forks tend to be fragile- they're made out of cast aluminum I believe, so I wouldn't go shifting like a madman or you're liable to break them Also, after increasing the boost, and after you start making some power the front wheel bearings might start experiencing a "short life span lol - if you have any questions or inquiries just give me a text back- who knows, I might be able to help Oh -and look up "Matt Faul Probezilla" or "fallguy probezilla"here on Y.T. its a completely bonkers RWD convert ed '90ProbeGT powered by a 2jz😂😂but before the 2jz, it Was still a FWD F2Tpowered PGT, he took off the SOHC 12valve head and put BACK on a DOHC 16valve head from the much lauded"fe3"engine,and just that setup along with a new "stand alone"ECU (I don't know what brand was used got him into the 400hp range and down into the 11's at the quarter mile track😳 which I've always found to be damned impressive Actually, Iwas wrong- he did a complete engine swap:took out the f2t, and put in anFE3(which is in the same family of engines, except its a whole HELL of a lot better -has oil squirters, and it's a DOHC(I'm sure you know all this stuff lol😉so it's a 16valve head👍 the next version of his PGT was known as:"Probezilla" whichwas converted to a RWD setuop, powered by a 2JZ I've always thought it was pure insanity, and completely badass😅🤟🤟
My Dad daily was a turbo manual probe like that. Small electronic items kept going bad, but that car would run so hard. If you maintained one, and put a turbo on it when it wore out, it was a blast to drive. Embarrassed tons of fox bodies and slo-maros. Dad drove that manual until he couldn’t . Have fun
Excited to see this evolve! Now you have me looking for Probe's, lol. I worked at a Ford dealership in 94 when we still had Probe's on the lot and I liked them.
I love people who start builds like this. I really hope you stick to the budget friendly setup cause I love showing my Daughter then as she is just now starting to drive. Good luck on the build and I love the Impulse name. Goes well with my 2009 Ford adrenaline we call Ada that I am fixing up for my Daughter now.
Don't try this at home kids. Seriously tow your ditch find to your garage or something first. This could have gone a lot worse. Still I must watch. I must watch Jared make this car live AGAIN!!!
I owned a couple of these back in the day. They were good and fun cars. Always thought it would be a neat swap to get the driveline from an early 90's Taurus SHO and drop it into the Probe. Jared, if you decide you don't want the car let me know. All of these in WI rotted away years ago, and went to the scrap while being a running car.
First, I would like to thank you for featuring this car on your channel, Mazda/Ford Probe is the best entry level turbo car you can buy. It is cheap, fast, reliable and you can put more HP for less money if you know how to do it. I had 3 of them, two 2.2t (F2T engine) and one 3.0V6 (Vulcan - Ford engine). 2.2T is the way to go, believe me, bottom end can take mid 300HP without mods with proper tune. If you do not mind, i can suggest couple of things: - HLA: you can hear them ticking, need new ones - Turbo: stock turbo (IHI) is good till 13PSI and after that it is just a hot air blower, To4 is the way to go. - Injectors: RX7 TII are direct bolt on and they flow a lot more - ECU: if you do not go standalone, try to find PROBINATOR chip, it pops on the market from now and then - Suspension: Second gen suspension will work on this one, and it is a bolt on (i think, i do not remember any more :) - Brakes: i think is the same thing - 2nd gen brakes and calipers... - Shifter: Honda CIVIC STS will work on this car, with small modification (2mm grinding) - Bonus feature: left foot-well, near the fuse box, there is a female plug x2 that is marked SUMMER, and the other WINTER, one si plugged with male plug if you change from summer to winter, wipers go and hide inside of the hood, or rise to windscreen (1-2'' movement). - Oh yeah, and the rumor is that it had a 148HP to the wheels, not the crank ;)
That's an absolutely PERFECT project for around 2 grand.. you can do a LOT to that thing with a pretty small budget and some time. Nice find Jared, I had a buddy with a Probe GT back in the 90s when I was young and we worked for Auntie Anne's Pretzels in the mall back when indoor malls were a thing. Oh my I feel old now!
When you do the headliner get dab brand landu top adhesive in the gallon paint jug. You can spray it out of the cheapest paint gun harbor freight has. Unlike painting you want it to splatter a little so make the flow a little heavier than when you paint. The landu top adhesive is for vinyl tops and last way longer than the cans you can get at the parts store. It is also uv rated
I remember seeing my first Probe parked in a Boeing parking lot in an office park in Renton, WA in the early 90's. I thought it looked pretty neat. This build should be fun!
Holy shit! I actually have a black 1990gt sitting in my driveway that I need to spend more time on! Assuming you have water leaks that you can't find check under the sunroof seal, it rots out frequently clean up the rust and silicone it back down, the sunroof drains will also clog and cause issues too. A filler neck and gas tank will be a nightmare to source, I hope it isn't either of those leaking. I might have a few spares of some parts kicking around if you can't find them, at least one of the headlight motors is probably toast, which is why they are doing less pop up. I am so glad to see one on the channel! If you want a cool future idea/bad influence, if I remember correctly the rear clip can be swapped out with a mustang rear end, and there is technically a tunnel built into the body for a drive shaft. I also highly recommend the 2nd gen cars, that v6 they put in was a ton of fun!
I actually found fuel tanks for just $220 brand new but I need to look and see what it is. And both headlight motors are toast along with the window regulators, but those are $50 or so online per side with motors! Thank you for the advice:
@@TheQuestionableGarage Awesome I guess that's what being in the US gets you! Last time I tried to look for a fuel tank and neck they didn't exist available in Canada!
Love that engine! Had it in an MX-6 and a 626... Recognize that lifter sound, too, from when it sat for too long. My '91 626 finally died this spring. Always wanted the turbo version. Looking forward to what you do to it. One issue I ran into is that mine was pre-obd2, so deep diagnostics were difficult.
I also love that you're not going to use all the sponsors, but do it on a budget... I always hate that when youtubers start humble (i.e. Leroy and Ruby on Cleetus' channel) and then go nuts on sponsors...not blaming them, but we viewers don't have that option... unless... Holley? @@devonlutz6599 is the b2200 the Mazda equivalent of the ranger with the 2.2l ford engine? i have one of those... didn't know that the F2Ts would adapt.
@@jamesgrossmann866 the B2200 is a Mazda truck design from before they shared any platform with Ford - mine is a 1990 and shortly before the Fort/Mazda partnership. The B2000 and B2200 trucks used similar engines to the 626/Probe and the turbo variants are rumored to totally bolt right up to the truck transmission and engine mounts. There's also the Kia FE3 engine from mid-90s Sportage SUVs that drops into these trucks. Not sure if they would work on a FWD vehicle but that's a much newer design and capable of making a lot more power than the original engine from my truck...
I had a 99 Probe GT with an aftermarket turbo. Not sure what the previous owner did, but I got that thing up to around 160. Fastest I've ever driven. It was lowered and handled incredibly well. I had a lot of fun in that car.
Awesome. Can't wait to see the impulse videos. For umder 400 bucks that thing is really not bad at all. Hopefully when he gets it on the lift we don't find something catastrophic.
Impulse? I thought for sure you were going to say ProbePulse? It looks like a fun, cheap, little project, but maybe... Someday... Down the Questionable Road... You could cram a ponycar driveline in it, and an old Ford SHO (Yamaha) 3.2 Litre V6Turbo, and turn it into "DriftPulse"
Nice I had one of these as my first car. Surprisingly it used have no speed limiter I could pin the needle all the way to the miles pusher to reset the miles. It was easily 160 I remember beating corvettes at the time. I literally beat that car so hard I’m amazed at how it put up with the abuse I put it through ❤ that Mazda made engine was what made the car amazing
We had one of these make its way through the family. My aunt bought it new, after her my 2 brothers drove it for years without any hiccups. When it hit 250k or something high up, the digital odometer rolled back to 100k and he sold it. Great car, lots of memories, loved the digital dash, and have never seen any other car roll back its own mileage. 😂
My father used to have a Probe GT just like that one around 25 years ago- as an unofficial import from the states to Germany. It was the first car I experienced 260km/h. Thought about buying one recently, but my uncle heavily discouraged me 😅
I'm excited to see a RUclipsr with a large following finally use a 1g pgt for a project. Definitely the most underrated tuner car of the 90's. With just a chip and a boost controller 300 fpt is very doable.
Love it the idea of a high schoolers car is great. I had about a 3600$ budget. Saving then working a second job over the summer for paint and ground effects kit. I don’t see very many cool cars at high schools anymore like it used to be
There was one for sale around me and i tried to get my son to pick it for his first car, havent seen one in ohio for decades i think and love the look too. No luck. We got a 94 Civic to rebuild this winter. Parts probably 1000x easier to find at least.
Wait, no seriously, what was that? First up it needs an internal detail and all the rust knocking off and painting. And an exhaust patch or five. And new fuel lines... I'm really looking forward to some budget friendly content once it isn't going to immolate you, your garage, your cars, your wallet, and your insurance premiums! I'd love to see you inspect the internals of the engine and do gaskets and seals, and then buy a boost controller, put on some decent tyres and brake pads, and drive it until it breaks down again in 23 miles
This is a build I can appreciate. I've grown tired of the common builds. The 1st Gen Probe GT is an underappreciated car. Sad to see them left to rot/recycled. I had a 1990 LX 5-spd in 2001. I learned to drive manual transmission in it.
I had the mx-6 gt turbo 1989. I was my favorite car still to this day. The only thing I didn't like was it was automatic. Good handling and quick. The suspension was the same with the 3 different modes and you really felt a difference. If anyone knows where I can find another one in decent shape. I might be interested.
I think my favourite cheap mod is getting creative with cheap OEM wheels. People sell off their old car's wheels for cheap to get them out of the garage, or sometimes you can score a set at the junkyard for $100 or so, and being a Ford/Mazda product, there's probably a bunch of interesting bolt on options out there - especially now that there's another 34 years of cars that have been put on the road
RUclips needs a build like this. Thank you Jarrod! I'm really excited to see what you guys do with this under $2500.
Ick
I actually just bought one. I had one in the past and big turboed it. I'm thinking about building this new one and making videos on RUclips

Watching Jared breathe new life into cars is always such a treat! I can’t wait to see how this turns out! Keep up the awesome work Jared!
Had a silver one identical to this when I was 17. Fun car. Sunroof is completely removable, buttons on the latch and tilt forward.
Oh why did you have to remind me about those cougars? Now I might have to go do something stupid on marketplace too...
Long love the Ford Probe!!! Great find!! Excited to watch this rehab series. Motivates me to start posting videos again of my 94PGT. 👍👍👍👍
Do it!
I hear ya!! Hope all is well with you and your PGT @@pgtmr2713
Please upload more! Your videos have helped me with mine quite a bit.
Same here, had one identical to this so this will be fun to watch unfold.
I always found it interesting that Mazda decided not to make an 4wd version of the 626 coupé (mechanically identical to this) nor did they make any of the 4wd models available in North America.
@@RLRSwanson I knooow so sad!
Keep up the good work and content Jared!!!
Big fan from Brazil!!!
This car qualifies to be an entry at the 24 hours of Lemons rally.
Its so cheap it qualifies to be a Lemons racer with money left over.
😜😜😜 Lemons!
I was going to suggest the same!! 🍋🍋🍋🍋
I'm doing that.
The tires alone cost more then the $limit
I had a 93 Ford Escort that was in similar shape. Fun fact, JoAnn has actual head liner material with the foam backing and all.

Nice little effect Dwayne added at 2:05 :)
Looking forward to this series. Seeing it brought back to decent is going to hit a lot of nostalgia buttons for me, I think. Heal quickly!
Years ago we had a 1990 Escort GT that had that same "what gear am I in?" shifter option. I dont remember exactly what I did to fix it, but I think there was a bushing kit or something I installed to tighten the pattern back up.
Gotta love the cold start of these high performance supercars.
They were really popular back in the late 80's/late 90's but now they're rare as
In the mid 90’s as a kid, my family bought a probe. Bringing back memories, definitely interested and following.
Love the budget build (the real ones) looking forward to it. Great job Jared
I definitely wouldn't fit in a Fiero. Am 6'1" and 290 pounds.
Pretty neat to see this as I bought a 88 Dodge Daytona this past weekend with a 2.5 L4 (non turbo sadly) but it's got 58k and a 5 speed!
that is a Neat little car going to be a fun little cheap beast and here's to a speedy recovery for you.
Adverts and intro not even finished yet. Already hyped and liking just from the thumbail!
They were going to replace the Mustang, a bunch of enthusiasts started a letter writing campaign in order to put a stop to that
As for your inquiry I can tell you the best budget setup that you can possibly do.
Thanks for this Jared! I always loved the idea of the first gen probe (maybe not the name) but the promise. Can't wait to see the budget project!
I daily a 1988 Mazda MX6-GT for 9 years now! Such a fun car. It's such a unexpecting car!
Oh this is about a probe 😅. I have a second gen. I was interested in a first gen as well. I need to learn how to wrench
You can do it!
You know what a good name would be for it 😂
This is going to be a fun little build for sure
Now if you could find a Isuzu impulse rs to go with it you have radwood locked down
I owned FIVE of these '89~'92 probe GT's yes, I know😂its ridiculous)
My first one I got, I was in highschool-
These really were surprisingly quick! But as a highschooler's very first vehicle?! It was a DAMNED fast car!lol
As I got older and wiser and after owning a few of them, I finally learned how the wastegate operated by way of the "boost reference line" and fabbed up my own adjustable valve in order to make a poor man's manual boost controller which worked very well considering
However afterquickly reaching about15 psi, the "vane airmeter"was maxed out
In other words the dreaded "fuel cut" was reached- the injectors could no longer provide enough fuel to compensate for all the added boost.
Now, whether or not this "fuel cut " was from the vane meter maxing out and no longer providing a good signal to the ECU, OR if it was from the fuel injectorssctually maxing out and could no longer physically provide any more fuel, I never found out, but I DID find iut the only intelligent way to get around it was to ditch the stock ford EECIV (ECU)and go with a "stand alone"ECU" Ive Seen fantastic results on RUclips and also read about great results on forums that the "Mega squirt and Mega squirt JR. work very, very well especially considering how affordable they are (just search "ademanster" on Y T.: his knowledge : on those cars ('89~'92probe GT/Mazda MX6GT,and his knowledge on the Mazda F2T engine in General is arguably unsurpassed 👍
I hurt a lot of feelings😅 back when I had my PGT it could be shockingly quick with just very basic modifications
By the way the shifter bushingsthat cause all that slopare located on the very bottom of the shift lever (easier access from under the car it's right above the resonator, which is about mid-way down the exhaust pipeand the "bushings" are just stiff rubber "inserts", one on each sideof course theyrno longer available from Ford though you might luck out from on online parts retailer,
Back when I had all of mine the internet hadn't been around anywhere near long enoughto establish any real knowledge about the ford PGT, or it's sister car, the Mazda Mx6GT. Much less any info on the F2T
From MY experiences with them, I know that little 2.2 12valve is,kind of an oddball engine, BUT it's damn tough-its an "old school design, with a stout iron block and a closed deckand the rods also seem to be pretty beefy, from all I could tell after pouring on the boost, beating the hell out of it, and inspecting everything during disassembly
Another thing- the transmission is fairly tough -the gears are comparatively thickBUT the differential side gears may cause problems down the road after you start making some power, they start to press outward and the steel "pin" that they ride on will start sliding out of the carrier assembly and then as it rotates, it tears into the soft aluminum trans. Case, quickly wearing away the inner wall, ruining the trans case, and allowing all of the trans. Fluid to leak out. I've read that thesteel "pin' can be welded on, in order to keep it in place so that it doesn't start walking or sliding out of place
-OH- and inside the transmission. The shift forks tend to be fragile- they're made out of cast aluminum I believe, so I wouldn't go shifting like a madman or you're liable to break them
Also, after increasing the boost, and after you start making some power the front wheel bearings might start experiencing a "short life span lol
- if you have any questions or inquiries just give me a text back- who knows, I might be able to help
Oh -and look up "Matt Faul Probezilla" or "fallguy probezilla"here on Y.T. its a completely bonkers RWD convert ed '90ProbeGT powered by a 2jz😂😂but before the 2jz, it Was still a FWD F2Tpowered PGT, he took off the SOHC 12valve head and put BACK on a DOHC 16valve head from the much lauded"fe3"engine,and just that setup along with a new "stand alone"ECU (I don't know what brand was used got him into the 400hp range and down into the 11's at the quarter mile track😳 which I've always found to be damned impressive
Actually, Iwas wrong- he did a complete engine swap:took out the f2t, and put in anFE3(which is in the same family of engines, except its a whole HELL of a lot better -has oil squirters, and it's a DOHC(I'm sure you know all this stuff lol😉so it's a 16valve head👍 the next version of his PGT was known as:"Probezilla" whichwas converted to a RWD setuop, powered by a 2JZ I've always thought it was pure insanity, and completely badass😅🤟🤟
“That’s normal smoke……coming out of the tire.”
I don't remember the Ford Pube being a Mustang killer...
It was designed to replace the mustang, but thankfully the mustang survived
I love people who start builds like this. I really hope you stick to the budget friendly setup cause I love showing my Daughter then as she is just now starting to drive. Good luck on the build and I love the Impulse name. Goes well with my 2009 Ford adrenaline we call Ada that I am fixing up for my Daughter now.
This is such a solid project, cant wait to see more
Don't try this at home kids.
If you do not mind, i can suggest couple of things:
- HLA: you can hear them ticking, need new ones
- Turbo: stock turbo (IHI) is good till 13PSI and after that it is just a hot air blower, To4 is the way to go.
- Injectors: RX7 TII are direct bolt on and they flow a lot more
- ECU: if you do not go standalone, try to find PROBINATOR chip, it pops on the market from now and then
- Suspension: Second gen suspension will work on this one, and it is a bolt on (i think, i do not remember any more :)
- Brakes: i think is the same thing - 2nd gen brakes and calipers...
- Shifter: Honda CIVIC STS will work on this car, with small modification (2mm grinding)
- Bonus feature: left foot-well, near the fuse box, there is a female plug x2 that is marked SUMMER, and the other WINTER, one si plugged with male plug if you change from summer to winter, wipers go and hide inside of the hood, or rise to windscreen (1-2'' movement).
- Oh yeah, and the rumor is that it had a 148HP to the wheels, not the crank ;)
I'm a personal fan of these Probes. Always wanted to pick one up, but I can never find decent ones by me locally in NJ.
I absolutely LOVE Shawn's '55 Pontiac! It reminds me of a line from the movie, Gumball Rally: "Some things get meaner as they get older."
Good luck with the recovery, Jared! My wife is getting a turbinectomy tomorrow, and I had mine a few years ago. Sucks but life is better afterwards.
I love the old Probes. I know they get alot of hate but they are fun cars to drive. Especially when they are a 5spd.
Awesome content as always.Love the variety in this channel. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
An 89 Ford Probe GT! I recognized it from the thumbnail. Good memories.
I have A feeling this is gonna be a Great series
i know its odd, but im more excited about this project than any of the others
I kinda hope Earl Leaker is also coming together soon. Another mad project, as always,
Keep it up Jared! I always like watching your shows. 👍👍👍
It’s a little project roulette getting things done, maybe we can drop a Earl video for you next!
They built both the Probe and Cougar at the Ford plant I work at. Now we just build the Mustang.
Leroy and Ruby on Cleetus' channel) and then go nuts on sponsors...not blaming them, but we viewers don't have that option... unless... Holley? I have a 96 ford ranger that could use some upgrades?!... (=
I have had my eye out for one of those F2Ts for a few years now - I'd love to throw one in my B2200 pickup. Very rare to find locally to me...
I had a lot of fun in that car.
you had a 99 probe when they stopped making them in 97.....Fooolish kid
Actually the Cougar was a 2 door Contour. Both on the CDW27 platform.
My first new car was a 1991 Ford Probe GL (base version of what you have there). I cannot tell you how actually excited I am to see what you do.
You could cram a ponycar driveline in it, and an old Ford SHO (Yamaha) 3.2 Litre V6Turbo, and turn it into "DriftPulse"
you should put a large graphic of Eric Cartman in the back window with a 40 ft satellite dish behind him, the car will name itself
I owned 2 mx6s and 1 mx3. The v6s are fun. I have been told the 4 cylinder turbo was a blast but never owned one.
Solid foundation for an OEM+ build!
'you might have a hole in the gas tank', 10:15 guys standing there smoking cigarette lol
I like the wheels ALL of the different styles really make it all work…..especially with the head liner!
And it seems the front wheels are from a MR2 SW20 Rev2, while the rears are from an FC RX-7 maybe?
I think my favourite cheap mod is getting creative with cheap OEM wheels. People sell off their old car's wheels for cheap to get them out of the garage, or sometimes you can score a set at the junkyard for $100 or so, and being a Ford/Mazda product, there's probably a bunch of interesting bolt on options out there - especially now that there's another 34 years of cars that have been put on the road
