  • Damien Trainor cautions that it's important to correctly balance strength and conditioning and Muay Thai training! Done well, strength and conditioning will enhance fight performance, however...
Strength and conditioning should supplement Muay Thai training, not replace it. Too many fighters are beginning to skew this balance incorrectly, causing Muay Thai performance to suffer.

I'm not a fighter, but I've trained sport muaythai diligently for over two decades. Training at camps that produce professional fighters, I was able to observe their training and preparation for their fights. I never see Thai fighter loose because they lack stamina or flexibility. So their training method should be adequate. But that doesn't exclude ways to improve their endurance and speed. I do torsonator punch press and rotation twist with light load and light seated leg press. I believe I put in around 20% effort into these exercise, just to supplement my usual normal Thai's training; running rope skipping trunk twist on rotating plate. I also do body weight exercise for core muscles. I just don't become indulged with weight training. I prefer to spend more on pad wok, clinching sessions, and sparring +heavy bag. BTW I'm a Thai and train in Thailand exclusively.
Incidentally, you probably see many top Thai fighters, dethroned recently. I don't think its because of the physical training. I believe they did not invest to hire specialist trainers for the particular opponent. Too much confidence in their ability.

During fight camp i find it hard to add in S&C on top of muay thai training straight after an 8 hour day on the tools out in the sun.
