In "Bye, Bye Beautiful" which most definitely is about Tarja, he writes: "did you ever read what I wrote you, did you ever listen to what we played?" Can't be more direct confession that he wrote to Tarja. And Marcelo in his letter tells Nightwish songs are full of Tuomas' love confessions for Tarja. She obviously agrees as she read Marcelo's letter and it was published on her website. Songs that people rarely notice are about Tarja: "Nemo", "Amaranth" and "Cadence of Her Last Breath."
The last mentioned is interesting that it has a reply in Tarja's song "Until My Last Breath". Nightwish's song is about this breathtaking butterfly, a one-day-miracle who causes all the poetry in the world make sense for Tuomas. And as a loner he hopes the butterfly saves her dying last words for him. Tarja's reply seems to be more to the whole band, not just to Tuomas. She writes she won't use her last word for him: "until my last breath, you'll never know, until you feel the silence, when I am gone, " and: "cannot cry it loud enough, I'm giving up this ghost" which could be either Tuomas or the band, the memory (ghost) of it probably. Curiously, her lyrics also hint that there COULD have been better times: "everything, what we might have been, only now you praise, call my name that you won't see again." Maybe it is about the band though, not relationship with Tuomas. What also seems to be more reply to the band is: "Who can change this memory? Inside it needs to burn, worship by the enemy, whe guilty take their turns," the guilty being in plural, the betrayal must burn inside as she will not say publically assassinate the band like they assassinated her. The enemy that worships maybe more Tuomas than the band.
In "Amaranth" Tuomas reveals the song is about him: "Baptised with a perfect name, The doubting one by heart" as his name is the Finnish version of the doubting Thomas of Jesus' followers. Amaranth is a flower which according to a myth, does not wither. As in Nemo Tuomas uses flower representing love, he does in here too. The song title is hence about the love which doesn't die. In the lyrics he writes about loving the pain and sorrow, not letting it fade: "Caress the one, the never-fading, Rain in your heart - the tears of snow-white sorrow. Caress the one, the hiding amaranth (hidden love), In a land of the daybreak." The music video of this song is also well chosen. It has an angel (Tarja pseudonyme) who is blind, as Tuomas in "Bye, bye Beautiful" blames Tarja being blind to his poems. The angel is wounded and burnt by the mob. She is sacrificed like the band did burn her publically. About this public sacrife might tell also the war mentioned in "Amaranth" and Tuomas' self-defence of guilt: "Need someone to blame, In the end, little he can do alone."
In Nemo Tuomas writes his last plead for Tarja to change her mind, let go of Marcelo and join him. Tuomas confessed in an interview this song is about him, when he felt lost, but "now I feel better". The opening tells he will be lost without her and he hopes this song would change everything: "This is me for forever, One of the lost ones, The one without a name (Tuomas is the Nemo), Without an honest heart as compass. This is me for forever, One without a name, These lines the last endeavor, To find the missing lifeline." "Oh how I wish, For soothing rain (to ease his pain), All I wish is to dream again," Nightwish band name comes from Tuomas' wishes during nights. "My loving heart, Lost in the dark, For hope I'd give my everything". Then he goes on telling that his love-story eneded in the very start: "My flower, withered between, The pages 2 and 3." Then comes a memory trip to the past, which pretty much tells there was a romantic phase at the beginning, or at least a hope of a romantic love which doesn't exist any more: "Walk the dark path, Sleep with angels (Tarja reference), Call the past for help, Touch me with your love, And reveal to me my true name." "Oh how I wish to dream again". In the end of his song he tells that he faces the reality and is letting her go: "Nemo sailing home, Nemo letting go." "Nemo my name forevermore".

And of course, the whole Anette's first album "Dark Passion Play" gets its name from this dark passion the break up with Tarja inspired in him. Hence at least half of the songs on the album are about the break up.

Marcelo also revealed that Tarja's pseudonyme was "angel" and you can see it in Nightwish lyrics and images. Tarja even used this username in her own web site forum. Tuomas' psuedonumes clearly are wolf, beast and devil: he sees himself as the dark seducer and Tarja as the pure beauty, this duality is apparent in many lyrics, in "The Beauty and the Beast", "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean". The song "Beauty of the Beast" then is about Tuomas himself, but the long lost love is present there too. Of course "the Poet" and "Dead Boy" were also Tuomas' pseudonymes. Look at the images of NW album covers. End of an Era has in its cover demon/devil and angel, facing different directions, and in between them a heart breaking. End of an era of course foretold Tarja being fired after the concert. Also the "Once" album foretolds that this is Tarja's last album: it has an angel weeping her head on a pillar, and word "Once" over it. I'm not sure what the pillar means, could be the band but that's a wild guess.
Knowing these pseudonymes opens the lyrics and images so much. Just listen this video and notice how many times those pseudonymes are mentioned.

Hey, just found out your two Tarja/Toumas lyrics analysis, as an old NW fan it's nice way to spend an hour with theories I also had!!!
Just one thing, I don't know why you said that they didn't know each other much during the first album, sure they weren't besties but Tarja and Tuomas were in the same school since they were 11/12 years old, they used to talk about it in early NW interviews (some of them are on youtube). Emppu was also from the same small town, Kitee, and even if they already knew each other, he became friend with Tuomas when they went to university/conservatory (where Tarja also studied). Also, Tarja started taking piano lessons at 6yo from Kirsti Nortia-Holopainen, Tuomas' mother, so even if they didn't really knew each other well until their early teens, it's safe to say that they most likely knew of each other and probably met here and there since they were literally tiny kids.
Also since she was 3yo Tarja sang in the church chorus (she sang a solo song for the first time at 6yo) and I remember a really, really old Finnish interview of Emppu saying that Tarja was known in Kitee as the kid that sang and that he has vague memories of her at church... so I don't know, given that Kitee wasn't that big and Tuomas was also raised christian, maybe that's also another place where Tuomas remembers Tarja from.
    Anyway, great videos!!
PS : fun fact : Marcelo said that he sang Come Cover Me at their wedding, which is sort of bizarre.

Did he really do that? Actually, this was genious and cruel, but funny at the same time! To take a song from his "rival" and sing to the woman he "took" from Tuomas, that was cruel and brilliant in different layers, lol!

Man, I'm amazed I just found you and your channel. I've been listening to NW since my teen times. NW is huge to me, I grew up reading their lyrics and translating them, and in the end I became an English teacher. To my dismay, it never had crossed my mind the fact those songs were mostly directed to Tarja, and I confess I got so disappointed when Tarja left that I didn't do any research about the reasons for it.
Thanks to this video (I'm about to watch part 2 at this very moment), I could have a glimpse of everything surrounding it, and that pisses me a lot! Anyways, great video, great analysis! I thank and congratulate you for this content! Long live Nightwish! Long live Tarja!

Thank you for this. This was really interesting to listen to. I am kinda thinking of these the same way you are.
But after all, only ones who truly know what happened between Tarja and Tuomas are Tarja and Tuomas. The only one who truly knows how he felt towards Tarja is Tuomas himself.
But thanks again for the video👍. Can't wait for the next part😊.

Great work here! It seems strongly that the lyrics of these songs were made using Tarja as muse. However, what Tuomas wrote and what he did in real life seems very different.
For example, Paulo Baron (the brazilean promotor that brought Nightwish for the first time to Latinamerica) confirmed that he had to warn to Marcelo (who managed logistics during the tour - except Brazil) that take care of Tarja going out the hotel just alone to take a walk, without knowing language or dangerous spots on the cities. She confirmed this just a few days ago to a chilean journalist saying that the first time she visited Santiago de Chile went out to know the city and ended talking with a local police about things. And this was because the band and crew members left her alone. So, you love so much a girl that inspire you the best lyrics you could write, and in the moment she is alone touring with you, your best move is left her complete alone?? Guadalajara's incident another example of this, and that one everybody could see it.
On the other hand Tarja had other relationships before meeting Marcelo. She said in a interview that Marcelo had to be patience at the begging, because she didn't wanted another relationship after broke up badly with a guy weeks before the Wishmaster Latinamerican tour. That guy left her "hurted" so even she liked Marcelo a lot, made him wait at first.
Maybe someday the main characters of this story would put certainty to it.
    Thanks for the video!

It is so tragic how people can be so not in touch with themselves, that they choose their ego over love... I can't believe to this day, the relationship with Marcelo was true love. But some people unfortunately don't have the courage to let someone so close to their heart...

Also, I had this impression after watching this video, I hope I'm not too late to comment on this, since the video is from 2022. You know, there's this "ocean" appearing here and there in the songs. I guess this "ocean" may be related to a special place in Kitee. In "Beauty of the Beast", he seems to recall some sort of memory between them, and the scenery he depicts seems to show a natural place surrounded by woods and water. I googled the city in a map, and it happens that there's some sort of lake there. My impression is that Tuomas confessed Tarja a very long time ago in a place like this, probably during a private moment of them in this depicted place. And she dropped him, and since then he was trying to capture her heart. I think this feeling is with him since they were kids, as many comments below said, Kitee was a very small city where everyone knows everyone, and probably Tuomas already kept an eye on her since that time.

at first I could not understand how can one reject Tuomas. He was so gorgeous, smart, sensitive, imaginative. No forreal, we all had our panties in a twist for him in the 2000s😅
But then I grew up and analyzed how he treated her, I think he wanted to control her. It was not love, it was an obsession. How he and the band treated her, would not fly 20 years later.especially the Guadalajara incident.Time did prove Tarja was not how they portrayed her in that infamous letter. She did not desearve that. It was such a cowardly, immature gesture and I hope they all regret it. I can only hope one day Tuomas will make a public apology.
But damn, they looked so wholesome and beautiful together in interviews, I think they really sold the image of their relationship. They really looked so friendly towards each other, you can see they have known each other since forever, grew up together and created something magical together.
I am still bitter about how things ended. Not as bitter as Tuomas, obviously!
