Drama drama, rabble rabble. ALL I'm saying is you have to acknowledge the possibility of cultural shorthand and recognize the level of detail Sucker Punch went into EVEN WHEN they had to rely on cultural shorthand.
Oh man between your videos and Meghan Sullivan's videos on Ghost it's clear there's such a huge level of love that was poured into Ghost
I dont think anyone is going to fight you. Its seems pretty much unanimous consensus even in Japan . I don't think I have seen anyone say otherwise.

I'm with Gaijin here. Western audiences aren't going to know the differences between samurai in the 13th century and in the sengoku jidai, so of course it's not going to be completely historically acurate, or else the Mongols would have won (which they actually did) so the so called "critics" have no right to complain. I think the problem here is that these same "critics" are trying to view Ghost of Tsushima as some kind of historical documentory, when in reality, it's literally a Kurosawa film!
People don't even know how young the revolver is when it comes to movies or that Wyatt Earp died in 1929. That is, if they know he was a real person to begin with.
From my personal experience modern day internet suffer on flood of wannabees who nitpick and whine for no reason. Because they don't understand why internet critic comedians are cool (as they actually joke about such behavior) or how trolling work (it is revealing people stupidity, not being stupid and lacking self-awareness ignorant). Lets hope people grow up from that like we did from being 90's kid.
@Zachary Erickson Yes. Tsuchima was overrun by Mongols, who later were destroyed in coincidental storm. Creators pick this isle specifically for dramatic purposes.
Lol look at Kingdom Come Deliverance, they did their absolute best to be historical accurate. People bitched about how it interfered with gameplay elements. GOT historically based but sacrificed some accuracy to make a better game. People bitching about how it’s not accurate enough. They just look for stuff to complain about and we have to ignore them. Not that there aren’t valid complaints about both these games, it’s just their’s aren’t.
@@stanjon7 Internet for you. Sometimes I feel like whole world is filled just by whining entitled idiots without common sense.
People who are so strict about how "authentic" the game is, are seriously missing the point of videogames and entertainment in general. Considering what most Japanese characters are in our media this game is frickin respectful as hell.

The only exception is when the game is marketed as "historically accurate" but then you have very innacurate plot and items, because the user wanted such accurate game.

People nitpicking inaccuracy in a japanese homage made by a western developer, while forgeting bf1 had various guns that weren't from ww1, samurai warrior... Is samurai warrior, and ninja gaiden... Is ninja gaiden! Like really? When ultimate accuracy became something to worry? I had a blast with ghost of tsushima by how much homage the game gives to Japan and its culture. I didn't felt in old japan this much since okami (omg capcom give me more!).
oh no, the people who take issue (not just noticing, but pointing the inacuracy out as a detriment) also take issue with BF1.
also, last time I checked, all the BF1 guns are acurate to the perriod, but most were either extremly rare or only experimental
@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 i never saw anyone nitpicking bf1 cuz of historical inacuracy.
@@Canalbiruta then you haven't been where I've gone
I knew there was plenty more material to cover in Ghost of Tsushima appreciate it.
The anachronistic armour is understandably acceptable, because it enables players to have more customization. I think it would have been cool to add more Tachi for the same reason though.

I would’ve loved to swing around a naginata, but I guess Norio gets all the fun.
I'd say more helmet designs, japan has a lot of unique and cool helmet design, i'm kinda bummed the game only has 4 helmets (3 in base game + 1 expansion) while there are TONS of headbands/straw hats, most of them are recolors
17:57 So is this why in anime characters are always obsessed with learning each other's name?
as the saying goes, " I MUST ONORU MAI FAMIRII". or whatever racist jokes about japan.
So, I just realized something: Adult Ahsoka uses the Daisho technique - mixed with lightsaber combat - in SW Rebels. One lightsaber is a longsword, and the other is a short sword/daggar. Huh.
Huh. Cool
I always followed the foxes in Skyrim. I just saw it as a chance to see new things, maybe find some undiscovered landmarks or items that were off the beaten path with a fluffy little guide.
BUT... You're telling me there's A REASON to follow the foxes in Ghost of Tsushima!?!
Cultured, eh?
If I remember right, in Skyrim there is no intentional script for the foxes to take you to places. Instead they have a script to run away from the player in order to keep a certain distance based on some triangle grid, this grid gets tighter around places of importance and if you chase the foxes long enough they will end up in one these places.
Or at least that is how I remember the explanation I saw in another youtube video months ago.
Goomba, I just want to say I took a japanese culture class and I passed with a B because of this channel. Thank you so much!
Woooo!!!
It’s never over is it? Take a break dude. Seriously please do.

My training paying off
One thing I in particular noticed was during the quest for the armor where you fight 6 Ronin, during the 5 fights before the final head honcho Ronin, Jin does a VERY unique style of Chiburi. Chiburi is the thing you see all the time where the warrior swings their blade to the side to fling off the blood before sheathing the blade..in fact the one you see Jin use most often is called the "O-Chiburi" and is rather common to various schools of combat..however when he duels the 5 Ronin in the Six Blades of Kojiro quest, Jin uses what is called the "Katori-ryū Chiburi" and is pretty much (to my rather limited I admit, research) exclusive to the Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū. I beat that game 100% (aside from banners and crickets) and Jin NEVER uses that chiburi anywhere else in the entire game..it's actually so rare I only found out about it literally about a week or two before the game's release while I was looking for sword fight anime vids on a late night samurai binge...random vid about Chiburi popped up and I kinda went from there. While I haven't played every game or seen every film or anime in existence..this is one of the few games I've actually see it outside the school kata demonstration vids you can find.
Ah! I'd wondered if there was a name for that "swing blade to side to remove blood" motion. And indeed, that's a great catch. I guess it's based on one of the oldest sword schools in Japanese martial arts? If so, it's an interesting touch that could be missed, especially if someone wasn't paying attention during those fights. Good eye and research!
@@raziyatheseeker The school says it was founded in 1447 while some scholars believe it's actually 1480..the first Mongol invasion of Tsushima took place in 1274. So I don't think the school by name goes back to then..though remember the game itself uses the time and historical invasion to tell a story..Katana as we know them today didn't really exist like Jin's blade, he would have been using the more curved Tachi during that time..the Katana as we know it didn't start being produced until around 1392 according to Wikipedia. The fact in game we repel the mongol invasion in what seems to be short order when in fact the very first invasion crushed Tsushima and moved on to the mainland in under 2 weeks..the invasion began on the 2nd of November and moved on to Iki on the 13th after conquering Tsuhima..is a historical rewrite.
That Gaijin meme when it got to the part about the Haiku had me floored x)
I think this game is FANTASTIC! I lived in Japan for 3 years and while I may not have been to Tsushima, I can say that there are many things this game got right, definitely enough to get people interested in Japanese history, so for that, I applaud it.
The complaints of historical inaccuracies reminds me of Kingdom Come and how they wanted to make a super realistic game or something, and at the end of the day, it was just a boring game not many people played or talked about. The reason for the inaccuracies in Ghost or Tsushima is because they wanted to cover a specific period but they also needed a way for normal people who aren't going to do the research to understand the game.
Wasn't that the super-realistic PS3 game with the "giant enemy crab"?
@@Chaos89P I was talking about Kingdom Come: Deliverance that came out a couple of years ago. It had that big controversy where they didn't want to include black characters because it wasn't historically accurate
@@Chaos89P That was a """"historical Japan"""" game for PS3 (massive air quotes because of said Giant Enemy Crab)
On top of all of that it seems that this game's success is spurring Sega to consider bringing the Yakuza Ishin games to the west :D

shimura's death is the true ending
@@SNinjaQK for who ?
@@chatleslorenzo6164 for everyone
@@SNinjaQK Yep. Because as I see it, Shimura is going to die either way. No way would the Shogun allow Shimura to fail to rearrest Jin after knowing exactly where he was, after Jin escaping, and after getting 5 clans of Samurai killed. If he's fortunate, he gets to commit seppuku.
Sparing Shimura is not a kindness.
Shawn Gillogly I saw it as you not giving your uncle the easy way out because he just wanted to die for a code that was flawed but I didn’t know much Japanese culture so I didn’t consider him killing himself but we know he didn’t because of the dialogue after with Yuna and Jin saying he hopes that he finds peace plus I think they would mention it if Shimura killed himself because that’s *pretty* important information. So I assume that Shimura found peace and is still leading the clan even if it is it culturally accurate.
Happy Birthday Gaijin! I really appreciate deep dives like this, especially since my knowledge of Japanese culture and history is pretty surface-level. It's awesome to watch you go into detail with source material like this because you CAN go into detail, there's enough depth to the material to be able to do that.
And honestly, I think there's a lot to be said about... what I guess we can call "purposeful stylistic inaccuracies." Yes, technically there are factual inaccuracies; but what IS accurate wouldn't "look right" to the intended audience. So a creator sacrifices facts for the sake of style (You described it as "cultural shorthand"). I think this is a perfectly valid choice as a creator, and made all the more admirable by the creator acknowledging it.
Amazing work as always

hello Sensei Goombah. I have fully enjoyed your videos, your energy, passion, and research into actual historical contexts and relating it back to a relatively niche area is hard work and I hope you feel the appreciation you deserve. With that said I have watched only a few uploads and have quickly caught on to the "real ninjas wear blue" I believe the video in which I first heard that explained why and how blue vs black is superior. Some thing I noticed about the shrines: Almost every kami shrine is located on top of mountain, close to the sky aka takamagahara (the Shinto version of heaven where the kami reside) except for Izanami whose shrine is located on the ground near Yomi- the Japanese underworld, her shrine is also very confusing to navigate much like how Yomi is also extremely difficult to navigate even for Izanagi.

Ghost of Tsushima captured the essence of what it felt like when I lived in northern Japan for a year. I don't think I've ever gone on so many nature hikes as I did living in Japan; nearly every picture I took was of the beautiful scenery or the random shrines we found along the way. Obviously Japan is a real place, but there was something about the nature there that made it feel mystical and Ghost of Tsushima really nailed it for me.
