Two things I've recently thought about with Ninjas.
1.You've often talked about how Ninjas weren't all about honor, and how annoying it is when Ninja try and have a far fight or other silly plans. BUT I had a thought of one situation where a concept like honor actually would probably mean a lot to the ninja, not revealing the secrets of the clan. If there is one situation that could be seen as their equivilent to honor its that you are dishonored by being caught and/or revealing information from the clan. I genuinely had this thought from watching TMNT where the shredder frames Yoshi for revealing clan secrets, and thats how he's able to get him out of the way (in varying different ways based on the version). Honor wasn't a fair fight, it was duty to the clan.
    2. The belief that all things continue on, but change is shockingly close to the concept that "Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed, just converted from one form to another". Like the Tao was really on to something there.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 3 года назад

Theres an old Japanese proverb that this reminds me of. And not just this video but all of the ones you've posted.
When the artist allows his work to impress upon him, that is true art. When the artist believes he can impress upon his work, that is delusion.
Never stop creating my friend, never stop learning, teaching, or dreaming. For it is these qualities that make you who you are. You are a true artist, and you have shown others the works of art that others have created. Go forth into the night dear friend, go forth and show the nightmares of ignorance that your blades have not dulled, and your armor has not cracked, show the world your art. Of all who have achieved it you are by far one of the most worthy of immortality, you've become effortless to remember.

Why? Digital distribution means that the resources that would go into packaging and disks/cartridges don't get used up. The metals used to make computer components are getting rarer and rarer, and recovering them from old electronics is hard or outright impossible in most cases. Digital releases are one of the ways to cut down on using the planet's resources which are already being consumed faster than it can recover.

This quite an interesting experience, especially from a game who's premise involved cyborg ninjas. While visuals and good gameplay are somewhat vital for a good game, I believe that a good, developed story is also key for players to be in tune with the game, even if it's not always clear in the get go. I'm convinced to check out the story even more when I get the chance.
On a side note, how they potray the later two elementals is slightly confusing do to possible American localization (in my uninformed opinion, I could be wrong), but make sense in the broad aspect. Wood and plant life as element has an ambiguous identity, often viewed to be paired with either earth or air (depending on cultural views of the element). So the image of tree despite being an "earth elemental" could make sense to fit both th eastern and western POV of the game. On the other hand, metal as an element is a concept that is not fully grasp in compared to the other natural elements, especially in the west. This is probably due to the notion we often think of machines and made tools when thinking of metal, other than the natrual ores and minerals in the earth I assumed metal means to represent. So the "lightning" being the fourth elemental in place of metal is somewhat a stretch, but slightly understandable as electricity and metal are often associated with machines. Heck, it might mean the some sort of electro-magatism aspect between the two, but that's just my blind guess.
Overall, I thought it was an interesting story worth investing, and feels well crafted when looked at the large scale.

Fun fact, an apparitor (which I pronounce ah-pair-it-ur) is a messenger, a subtle nod to "The Messenger" which is another 2D ninja game. Specifically an apparitor is a religious messenger.
Apparitor believes himself to be the incarnation of the Lightening Elemental and resents Shadow because Shadow is a late addition to the clan and because the Master chooses Shadow. Jealousy is Apparitor's underlying motivation, not a quest for power.
He believes that his clan was deceived by an anti-christ in the form of Shadow and so his slaughter of the caln in order to save The Master is an act of faith. He believes that a sentient AI copy of The Master is The Master herself --- indeed, even this AI doesn't know that she isn't actually The Master (I love the movie "Bicentennial Man" and I say there is no real difference between consciousness of the flesh and consciousness of the machine, they are the same; I digress). So he falsely believes that she is alive when in fact she is hidden away comatose and on life support, not alive and not dead.
I love the story in Cyber Shadow, I'm a big fan of Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain" and my favorite Studio Ghibli movie is "Tales From Earthsea", both are heavily about the folly of seeking eternal life. I also really love "Spirited Away" which is a touchpoint for me when thinking about what the "Ethos" is in Cyber Shadow.

Lives systems aren't outdated in any way, they're just always horribly misused.
Lives should be an extension of health. Whilst health is a mechanic to ensure you understand what you're currently being tested on, lives is a mechanic that ensures you understand what you've been tested on recently. Many times I've played games and got to a part where it expects me to know something I should have learned previously but didn't, and die way, way too many times. If the game had a life system, I wouldn't have died anywhere near as many times because I would have been brought back to where I could properly learn that which I failed to learn the first time.
Saying a lives system is outdated is like saying a health system is outdated. Not every game needs it, but it massively helps reduce the extremity of game's difficulty spikes if implemented properly.

It's amazing what you can find when you re-orient the angle you are looking at. With that out of the way, Gaijin Goombah really hasn't touched on Digimon, to my knowledge, aside from that one time he did a cultural breakdown of Renamon. But here's the thing, that franchise has a lot more Japanese culture baked into it, and he did say he would like to revisit Digimon at some point. The 2020 reboot of Digimon Adventure really hammered home just how much Japanese culture is baked into the franchise, with one of their big opponents being Orchimon (who is clearly based on the Yamata no Orochi, as is evident by the name). But even so, Digimon has a few Digimon based on ninjas. Off the top of my head, there are Ninjamon (which should make it obvious), Shurimon (a humanoid plant with massive freaking shuriken for its hands and feet), the Falcomo( which has some clear shinobi inspirations). Ninjamon only showed up Digimon Adventure 02 a handful of times, and I'm unaware of what sort of presence it had in the games, but Shurimon did show up quite a bit in 02, Ravemon is a Digimon that didn't show up until the latter half of Digimon Savers (Digimon Data Squad in the English dub market) and is the final stage evolution of Falcomon. But here's the thing, Falcomon (a Rookie/child level Digimon) is basically a falcon that throws shuriken and has dark colors, and there's Peckmon (a Champion/Adult level Digimon) that is based on a ground-based bird, like an emu or ostrich or cassowary, but and it falls into the trope of throwing kunai. But things start to get a little different when it evolves into Crowmon (an Ultimate/Perfect level Digimon), it starts channeling the religious elements of shinobi you been talking about in a few videos. And finally, there's Ravemon (a Master/Ultimate level Digimon), who goes into being a sort of dark warrior that uses ambush tactics.

I love your videos and the subjects you cover. I'm in love with Ninja Philosophy and am creating a character based on real Ninjustu. I would love to know the best place to study more of this and would love to know where would be the best place. Also, where could I find the Tree Art of Ninjutsu at 6:34 in your video? I will share my character with you if you are interested. Thanks for your time, Gaijin Goombah. :D
Also, what books do you recommend and sites, please.
Keep up the awesome videos. :)

I guess Shinobi philosophy would have been around. It was probably something similar to bushido, which was a philosophy or an idea that samurai had discussions about in the Edo period after Japanese warring states period. Of course, in the 1930s, was then written into an actual book. However, these would been discussed after warring states period. There probably wasn't a lot for samurai to set down and discuss philosophy. Probably dimyo or samurai lords, but that's because there lords.

Here's a left field ninja to look at: The Ninja Monkey from the Bloons Tower Defense series. I think I've already seen enough of this show to already take a guess that this ninja is... less than accurate to real ninjas, but I do think the BTD6 iteration is the closest we get... even if it is a bit outlandish.

I think you should really do an episode on payday 2, not really a specific character, just the stealth mechanics. They have a skill tree literally called "Shinobi" they have a ninja weapon pack, with shuriken, and they actually use kunai properly. Answering pagers is on the fly trickery, much like what real ninja used. You steal Oda Nabunagas armour, which might not have to do a lot with ninja, but I thought it was cool. The skill "Sixth Sense" feels a lot like a form of jutsu. The Kuro Zukin is just a ninja mask. There isn't really a disguise system, but I feel like you could get a good video out of this game.

Hey Gaijin! You should make a video on Paper Mario: The Origami King! There’s an area called shogun studios that is fully Japanese with an attraction called “the house of tricky ninjas”. Based on your videos it seems pretty accurate and authentic
