Any game set in feudal Japan has my money. I'm looking at you, Ubisoft...
Ubisoft totally missed the point of an AC game set in feudal Japan...but now we have it. Sayonara, Ubi.
SP to Ubisoft: Oh you almost had it! You gotta be quicker than that.
Now that Ghost has taken on feudal Japan, I think it would be an interesting idea for AC to go Boshin Wars Japan if they ever finally go there. To avoid comparisons a bit, yet keep an interesting setting.
Would anyone be interested in seeing the sikh empire in a video game as they defended their land against Mughals afghans and British ? Fierce warriors but rarely known in history
Ghost of tsushima way better than any ac game imo.
I followed the code of honor Jin claimed for himself in his first flashback: “Honor is protecting those who cannot fight.” To me, this means saving as many innocents as I can at any cost and sparing enemies that want to run away. This is what I personally interpret Jin’s philosophy of honor is, and I decided for him to act “true to his personal code”. Also I spent almost the whole game bowing in respect to the dead, even though it does nothing, solely because that’s what I thought Jin would have done.
Wow thought I was the only one bowing to the fallen. This game is my shyt. 🔥🔥🔥
You get something to now to 10 secret things :)
Lol wait till later on...
But later in the game you can make Jin say " I am demon only for my ennemies". So i slaughter every Mongols who try to run away.
Gay
We have to remember, Ghost of Tsushima isn’t a game about reliving history with a twist like assassin’s creed. It’s a game meant to make you feel like you’re playing your favorite samurai movie, and it definitely succeeds. Historical accuracy matter very little in samurai movies anyway, just look at 47 Ronin which I know wasn’t that good but was still fun to watch.
Maxs reliving history makes it more fun though, in some respect.
DrumtotheBass Woop I’m not saying it doesn’t, in fact the historically accurate parts of this game were a lot of fun to play through. But this a samurai movie turned video game first and for most.
@@maxs9062 yeah I feel a lot of people dont know that or forget that the game is a love letter to those movies and not really a history game whether or not it would have benefited more from historical accuracy it was foremost about creating a fun experience which SukerPunch is amazing at
Couch Talk I agree with you completely.
Couch Talk if it was a complete recreation of Japan as an open world game, being involved In major conflicts of the history books, would be so cool though. 👌
To paraphrase Robot Chicken in their 300 parody: "It ain't accurate, but it will blow your f@#$ing mind!"
Even the devs said they took a lot of liberties years ago
Can we just also pay some homage to the incredibly fast loading times in GOT? That's got to be an extra. 0.5 on the score.
Yes this !!!
Fast travelling when needed is probably the fastest in any open world I’ve played in a long time as low as few seconds- longest 8-10 seconds 😂 amazing
So fast I cant even read the tips. And I'm playing on a gen 1 ps4
@@SoftyWalterGames lmao yeah pretty much. I play a ton of monster hunter world and i can unfortunately read like 5 tips per loading screen. You really don't have time to read one in GoT.
considering it's on a ps4 the load times are great, but still arent as fast and some games on pc with an ssd, im sure they will make a ps5 version of this game that speeds it up.
Hell yes! One of the best features 👍
One can admit, the "Six Blades of Kojiro" was also a good touch to the game too, especially in Kurosawa Mode.
That quest really makes you really feel like a bad ass. I love it so much.
Absolutely!
The Straw Hat Ronin felt like the real enemy. They were sorely missed mid play through ! Those HATS ! Gave me that Big Trouble in Little China vibes.
I’m on that mission right now! Where can I find the straw hats in toyotoma?
@@gabecarlos61 do the 5 duels around the island, then the 6th will show up.
Btw the bamboo thing is 100 percent intentional. Imagine trying to run through a bamboo feild with your horse. I'm am personally very glad they took that liberty.
I never even noticed it because I never tried to run through bamboo.
Good observation. Never noticed it myself never played a game for critique, just fun, and i had plenty of that
Me as well, haven't noticed it but they did kinda made up for it in the Toyotama area where the bamboo are more clustered up as to form an actual obstruction.
Funny how the ps4 line of exclusives started and ended with games made by Sucker Punch
So we gonna forget Killzone Shadow Fall being a launch title?
MrLaafish we don’t talk about that one
You meant to say Naughty Dog
@@MrLaafish Well its developers did re-release Horizon Zero Dawn for PC around the same time as GoT's release but that's kinda stretching it a bit...
For me this game is a 10/10.
same here.
@@johnbreton2632 It's selling like crazy.
Do you know were to check how many hours I have played this game? Just finished it a couple of days ago and I was curious how long it took me to beat it. Thanks in advance for the answer.
Hellyeah definitely a 10/10
Same, this game its just art, just perfect.
I am already envisioning a sequel to this game where Jin goes to the mainland and, to his surprise, instead of being hunted by the Shogun he’s secretly welcomed by him and officially becomes the first Shinobi.
In my opinion, what they should do is make different settings. The Mongols conquered all over. It would make sense for different games with different characters. Maybe one in the Middle East, Europe, etc.
Or maybe a descendent of Jin and that it would take place on the Edo Period with warring clans and rifles and stuff.
Jortus Pelatus that would be cool if they did it right
Rev BladeZ Yes we know, also IRL most of the Mongol fleet was wiped out at sea by a typhoon. Luckily this is a video game.
@@revbladez5773 Oh my bad.
For me, Ghost of tsushima is the only good thing that happened this 2020 so far
Yeah, like the shine of hope.
You forget last of us..
Well.. I liked Doom Eternal that came this year
I can definitely agree with that
@@Blue-yp5mz maybe he didn't forget TLOU2, maybe that was the point.
Platinumed the game.
I rarely care about platinum trophy. Here I just truly enjoyed walking in Tsushima and killing Mongols in many different ways. My favourite way is sniping with longbow until they run at me then switch to half-bow to engage the approaching Mongols, and finally draw my katana (should have been tachi) to engage in melee combat. Gosaku's build is literally "one-man-army" that tears through dozen Mongols in no time.
There are flaws here and there, but the game is already amazing the way it is.
Getting platinum on GoT are 100 times more fun than TLOU 2.
Dude.....you finished it already? Still exploring in Act 1 lol....but yeh, I don’t spend more than 1-2 hours per day on it
I really like kojiro's armor probably spelled the name wrong but that resolve build is sick as hell
its the only game I've ever platinum and none of the trophies felt like a grind. thank the ancestors we didn't have to collect all the banners to get 100%
Haven't even collected all the artifacts and banners but also platinum'ed it just hours after finishing the story. Now onto my 2nd playthrough on Lethal with Japanese dialogue.
Glad I'm not the only one who walks around a lot, taking in the sights and generally trying to be part of the world too. Makes you feel like a badass walking into a mongol camp, killing everyone, and then walking out like taking a Sunday stroll.
It's fair to note that in the Japanese dialogue, they actually use "tachi" instead of katana. The visual choice was a cinematic one. And one they made consciously and announced ahead of time.
I agree having the Naginata, even as a mounted weapon, would've added to the game. And while I like the manual camera, as it reminds you Jin is constantly outnumbered, I do think a command to pivot the camera 90 degrees would be very useful.
Where I disagree is in claiming Khotun isn't a threat. 1st, he is the leader of the Horde. It makes no sense he'd show up everywhere. On the other hand, you see his work in every village burned, every ronin who joins the enemy. And when he does appear, he's lethal, cunning, and brutal.
As far as furthering the invasion narrative, I would not be surprised if there is a DLC that does just that. Or one that deals with the fallout of the final choice.
And while I agree that I crave a true samurai RPG, it's fair to note this was never advertised as anything but a stealth/action adventure title. In that, it comes far closer to role playing than I imagined it would. I much prefer RPGs. But I can't criticize a game for executing well exactly what it claims to be.
So yeah, for me, 9/10 and probably my console GOTY.
Duels against enemies with naginatas would surely add diversity
I have got to question, would those wanting additional melee weapons, want to have the same level of variation as the sword? The spear using enemies in the game had very little variety and if that was the spear we got I would have been more disappointed than not having a spear at all.
I'm pretty sure I heard Jin say Katana in the Japanese dialogue.
You said console GOTY, may I ask what game is your overall GOTY?
@@westerosi27 Overall? CK3.
Just finished the game an hour ago shedding manly tears at the end. Hopefully we get a next game set on the sengoku era
there’s a clear demand for new samurai games. I have no doubt we’ll get games that try to capture tsushima’s success with different periods in japanese history
No worries...Ubisuk will do another AC samurai after they lost it for Sucker Punk ;)
They’re probably gonna do the second invasion of Japan in 1281 next
Well....you can try Nioh 2...
Would really like a Game where you play as or during Oda Nobunaga reign, that would be balling
I really agree with you about the way the game forces the player to take on the Ghost's approach during story moments. During the recapturing of castle Shimura, I dressed Jin in the Sakai armor dyed red, and led the charge against the Mongols like a Red Demon, absolutely refusing to use any ghost weapon or do any assassinating because I thought that Jin should still upholds honor and fight like a true warrior in a formal battle like this, but the cutscene rolls in and Jin used started using the ghost weapons and got absolutely scolded by lord Shimura for his actions, and I was just sitting there like "This is what I get for trying to play honorable?"
Still, an honest great game and I too immensely enjoyed it.
I played on hard and tried to fight through the entire game like an honorable samurai. I was punished over and over again until eventually I started using kunai. Then smoke to reposition then bombs then assassinating specific enemies that gave me trouble. When I got the ghost stance I was basically full on ghost so the castle of Shimura wasn't crazy out of character for me.
Well it is called GHOST of Tsushima for a reason. I do not understand the whole criticism of historical events when the story never set out or claimed to be historically accurate.
I hated the parts where stealth was forced too. I found it much more rewarding to stand off, and battle the enemies head-on.
@@walkthebrokenpath0 Metatron points out in his playthrough that there isn't a set honour system at this point in history and that not using certain tactics to win (failing your lord is a bigger dishonor than using kunai) would actually be foolish rather than honorable . The code of bushido came much later and in my opinion was method of control.
I had the same thing happen aswell, but later on in the game it got incredibly difficult to consistently and effectively take out huge groups of mongols using a sword and bow at the same time forcing me to start effectively using all the ghost weapons.
So in a way my own playstyle was challenged just like Jin's code!
Finally to see an actual samurai historian give their verdict to this game! (My second favorite is Metatron who mention the small inaccuracy like armors, kenjutsu and swords they used)
The game was never said to be historically accurate
@@revbladez5773 The moment they introduced Khotun Khan (a fictional character) or even other protagonist that never existed in real life...it became historical FICTION. Sakai armour is not from that era but I heard it is a reference from one character from that wears a scaly outfit with an insignia in the middle similar to Jin. Even dramatic samurai drawing blade is a reference from samurai films...real samurai never do that shit wasting your time but it's a fun thing to see and it sets up a good atmosphere for a fight. The moment you just stick to historical accuracy and limits creative liberty.....that will be one boring game.
@@revbladez5773 didn't one of the guys behind the game say that it wasn't about being historically accurate in the first place? I would be mad if it claimed to be 100% accurate but it never says that
@@tobinfromfireemblem9742 yeah they said it was supposed to be like you're playing a samurai movie and I think they took inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's movies
Ghost of Tsushima is what a “Tenchu” remake should be and let Sucker Punch remake it
U just said what i wish after i finish this game ;)
We need a ninja stealth game soo bad. I don't mind them reusing assets
This is the closest we're ever likely to get to a modern Tenchu game, sadly.
im sure the part 2 jin as shinobi vs shogun and he will create his own clan of shinobi (my theory)
@@Darily01Cess he starts the shinobi tradition 🤔🤔 that would be really cool
I hope they add a duel mode, where we can replay duels and such. I never had so much tense fun in a duel.
Fun Fact: The guy who voiced Sakai in English dub is also the one the player model was based on.
It's not a dub. English is the original intended language for the game's lip-sync. Which is also why all of the English VAs are the basis for all of their respective character models. Not just for Jin.
I really hoped that the character on the game cover would be the actual character model... Yes, I'm one of those people who would prefer movies to be starred by good looking actors. :)
That’s a pretty standard practice these days.
Well then its not dubbned isn't it
@@lanzer22 ...he is? His name is Daisuke Tsugi
You can't "lock on " to enemies but you can choose who you want to attack just point the left stick at the enemy of your choice it's very useful when you're surrounded
yeah it works just like Shadow or Mordor I really like how it didn't feel super easy either
I prefer this way as it is ultimately more fluid. I on occasion had to move the camera but I got used to it and never really got caught off guard by it and if I did I dodged or sprinted away and adjusted.
I feel like the developers had planned or at least considered integrating a lock-on system but because of the different stances and types of enemies they had to forgo it. But now that reviewers universally complained for the lack of it they would probably have it on a sequel if it happens. Personally, I'd just like to have the option.
They should need to put lock on system in got
There is a lock on system now, but I find it cumbersome. You are constantly surrounded by enemies so you have to focus on everyone around you. To use the system effectively you need to funnel them and take them out one by one.
Note: I'm only on Act II so I haven't finished the game so if what I say contradicts the game, I'm sorry haha.
I seriously hope, with the success of this game, if they make a sequel, they'll call it "Ghosts Of Tsushima" with a whole culture around Shinobi/Ninjas. Leading up to the second Invasion.
Nah Ghosts of Japan or a area of Japan becuase I want a new map and it would make sense because (I don't know this as fact) I'm pretty sure the Mongols reached mainland Japan in the second invasion (I could be wrong)
Nihon no Shinobi lmao
YOUR HORSE DIES IN ACT 3
Mongols do reach mainland by by then they consructed walls on the beach which made landing difficult
@@gabeperras3711 dude, you're an absolute ass for writing a comment with the sole purpose of ruining act 3 for a dude who literally wrote that, he is on act 2. Gtfo kiddo.
I wish, though, that we had longer weapons like spears, naginatas or nodachis which would be easier to use on horseback.
Being able to use or pick up spears and shields would definitely be a cool update
@@byjaywinter Well, if they do a sequel about the second Mongol invasion, perhaps they'll do that.
Noah Sklar if you beat the game, they already allude to what the sequel would be, if you listened to the peasant that has his wagon stuck in the mud.
Nodachi is impossible to be used on horseback. Yari and Naginata is recommended.
@@revbladez5773 not true, they were not as popular but were used
There’s so many ways to clear a horde of enemies that is way too satisfying. 100% stealth clear. Perfect archery clear. Perfect parry+counter attack clear. Perfect aggressive (heavy attacks and stance switching) clear. All of these feel great if you can pull them off.
Yeah the game isn't challenging in terms of difficulty, but you still gotta be on your toes, cause 3 random bandits could still wreck you if you're not carefull.
But you have so many tools at your disposal that you can get really creative, and THAT becomes its own challenge.
Like trying to get crazy combos and High Notes in DMC V, in GoT even tho you don't get a score or points, you start coming up with your Own battle tactics and fighting style, YOU create something unique using the tool set given by the game, you're free to use any of it, all of it or none.
It is in some regards an "emergent" gameplay, if you use ALL you're OP as fuck, but given your preferences and habits, you can devise your own style and this becomes part of the challenge.
It is a simple systeme, easy to learn, difficult to master, and those are the best kind.
I'm just hoping that they make a part two of this game for the next gen console, and that in part two we get to actually play in mainland japan. Also good review you pretty much nailed it
It would most likely get re-released on PS5 but yeah a sequel would be nice. I kinda viewed this game akin to Horizon Zero Dawn where I thought that it didn't need to have a sequel but now it's happening and it's close to being a launch title for the PS5 so anything's possible.
I also played with the Sakai armor painted red for most of the game, made me feel like I was doing a Sanada Yukimura cosplay. All that was missing was a cross-bladed spear...
And btw, please continue with this great channel to deliver the quality content you always had. Many of us are quite addicted to it i would say :) !
I finished this game today (technically yesterday) and this game made me cry twice 😫😖
I'm with you on that. I sat with that choice for literally an hour
Same here bro played it twice and cried twice on parts where I cried the first time.
Tsushima: Gamers Cry Twice
Me too! I sat with that choice at the end then saved it before I chose because I wanted to reload it and choose the other to see what will happen.
Same. Plus the timing of the outro was so perfect, it had me in tears, such a great game.
Bruh I love his firm an stable sound of his voice it’s amazing I wanna sound like that
Shimura’s voice actor is same as Solid snake in Japanese
He voices zoro from one piece too
@@Eric-gb7ux He's talking about Shimura, not Jin.

etc,etc…
This is easily one of the most beautiful games I've played.
It's the Japanese first person Samurai game I've dreamed of playing every since playing Tenchu about 20 years ago, albeit Tenchu being a ninja game. Taking on a small regiment of Mongol warriors and cutting down the first three approaching you in as many seconds feels ridiculously badass. The foxes alone are adorable, and I'm alternating between attacking stealthily and openly 'with honour', as both are a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure this is the nearest I'll ever get to feeling like I'm inhabit the world of a living, breathing samurai.
The Haiku spots are probably my favorite feature tbh, I enjoy taking a break from the bloodshed and the trailing to just sit down and write something truly amazing
They did an astonishing job with the atmosphere and ambiance of lots of places, where you really can take in the beauty of the islands
@@Mugthraka I really liked the haiku spots. Sometimes it seemed kind of weird to see Jin sit down in a serene way when he's just COVERED in blood though. LOL
When I get this for Christmas, I'll go full Kurosawa mode and blast the Seven Sam, Yojimbo, and Hissatu series scores in the background...
It's a 9/10 for me, let's hope his success will help bring Yakuza Ishin to the west.
holy fuck, multiplayer 1 v 1 duels in this game would be amazing.
By far the most beautiful game I’d ever played. beat the game in a week side mission and all that’s how much I loved this game.
Actually although the Tachi or Sword was a secondary weapon even during Kamakura period, but the Mongol Invasion somehow made the Samurai to really upgrade and reflect why their Tachi is ineffective against the Mongols armor (who mostly armed in Chinese and Korean armor), so they sorta made the prototype uchigatana. Not to mention the Samurai starting to upgrade their kenjutsu for close combat against the mongols. I think the samurai did use alot of swords during the mongol invasion with their ship boarding raiding action in the second invasion.
That story piece at the end that you talked about would have helped the game narrative wise alot. Other than that the game is amazing and already probably one of my favorites of all time.
Come on Squaresoft old buddy up your game and bring back Bushido Blade with this level of treatment. I'm currently playing Ghost of Tsushima and can't get enough of it so far. Great job Sucker Punch productions.
Also, I found you’re channel like a week ago and you’re making some pretty great, quality videos. I don’t know you don’t have more subs
i am taking my own sweet time to play this gsme.... slowly explring the island. izve been explring since release day and still not completed half of act 1 (i think)
Same here
Getting all mythic items/techniques
U got Tadoyris armor
What about Heavenly Strike (Amakakerurenomeki)
I've been playing Ghost of Tsushima for 2 weeks now and i'm really loving it. I actually found your channel because of it, and the will to find out how accurately the samurai were portrayed in the game. It's been really hard for me to sit and finish an open world game in one go, i think it only happened with spider-man in this generation, but now, reaching the second act, i guess this will be the second time =P I think the pacing in which you uncover activities through the island is really good. In Any assassins creed game the more icons i have on my map the less compelled i feel to complete them =P And in Ghost of tsushima i find it's really on your own pace that you get to uncover the island. Amazing experience so far, even with the graphic falling bit behind the likes of Last of Us part 2 and Death Stranding, it still manages to look incredibly beautiful and immersive.
I bet if we didn't have a pandemic this would have one of the best game of all time.
Having just gotten to Act III and watched a lot of other reviews, I can say yours is one of the most enjoyably in depth and accurate reviews of the game. Discovered your channel quite recently in the lead up to the game and was excited to see what your thoughts were on it.
This felt to me like BOTW with samurai and I loved it.
They really get the feeling down with the haikus and spending time in the onsen. It's super relatable!
I'm really happy with how they wrote Shimura. I was really worried that this would turn into somewhat of a anti-samurai game with a simple message of "there's no honor in war and the samurai dream is stupid". And while the contrast of honorable vs effective is pretty obviously there, Shimura representing the "ideal" samurai was handled very gracefully in my opinion. He stays true to his code, but is not blinded by it or a thickheaded hypocrite (which is what I was afraid of) or someone who does not value the lives lost under his command. Both him and JIn felt pretty thee dimensional with their ideals and personalities, definitely shows the developers cared about the setting and Japanese culture beyond surface level, even with some pretty... glaring historical inaccuracies.
well actually he attempted to kill his own nephew who killed the khan and actually helped the island...the impression I got was that I really don't want to be a samurai after playing this game lol
@@tjthegreat7 I know what happened
I hate to break it to you but the reason so many Samurai movies adopt an anti-samurai stance is because, frankly, the Samurai weren't all that great. Very few anti-samurai narratives push such simplistic ideas like "honor is bad" or "samurai are stupid". Most of them focus on the self destructive and hypocritical nature of the Samurai and their codes. The Samurai are much like European Knights in that they were ultimately enforcers of a system that harmed not only themselves but also the people beneath them. The best Samurai stories are aware of this grisly truth.
@@mphylo2296 You don't need to break anything to me, I know what anti-samurai movies are and also about real life samurai, but also my post wasn't about that, but about my worries vs. what the game eneded up being. You're barking up the wrong tree here.
This game is so beautiful. The color palette is so good. I love the duels!
I get the game took inspiration from Kurosawa and Edo period tropes when it came to the samurai. But come on Shimura! The samurai on the mainland end up sneaking onto Mongol ships, stabbing the Mongols while they slept on during the second invasion. Why you gotta be mad?
Also one thing I wish we had was just a bit less moments you were a one man army. Especially later on in the game, the Ghost has his own army at that point. But we don’t ever get to use them really, I think being able to control some men or have some companions Ghost Recon style would have been cool. I just don’t like to feel like a one man army.
The voices for the MC and the master sound like famous voice actors from Japanese media that I recognize as well. The dedication to having those different forms of media for different tastes is a wonderful detail I appreciate a lot about this. Shame I sold my PS4 cause I didn't have a TV to work with, and never got to play this.
The worst example of brutality I found in game, that my friend missed, was a woman on a beach with a sword through her ♨️ and used for target 🎯.
If there is a sequel set 7 years later during the 2nd invasion, I would dearly love for the protagonist to be a new character. Just as Jin scoured the island for legendary artifacts, imagine the chills players will get when the new guy recovers the ghost armour worn by Tsushima’s previous savior. A new legend in the making.
I played it over the holidays and immedietly started the New Game+. I'm mostly a PC gamer and usually can't wrap my head around how to use a controller, but this game finally got that to click in my head. Setting, story, visuals, gameplay... I loved all of it.
All reviews are biased, as they depend on personal feelings, and that is fine. I liked your review because you have shown respect, love, and knowledge about Japanese culture... I eas expecting a 9 on your side basically because no game is out without its bugs... those get patched and corrected... you have tons of examples like that... I still remember how annoyed I was with the first glitches of The Witcher 3... I stopped playing until everything was corrected... I did not feel Ghost of Tsuhima had severe issues to enjoy it... 6 years is a lot of time for developing a game... but there are many things which could be missed... anyways, good in depth review... for me this game is a solid 10 as there are ZERO Samurai/Shinobi games like this one out there!
In the history of the battle of Tsushima a typhoon ended up wiping out the mongol army. I saw that the names of his katanas made refrence to that. So in a way Jin is the Kamakazie that took out the Mongols
This is the only game I've ever played 3x in a row without a break in between. Lethal mode is fantastic!!!
I just tolled credits on this game and I absolutely loved it. I’m sitting at a 9/10 for me because of some issues I noticed as well, but they are minor at best.
Great review sir! ( I’m hoping they will add a new game + mode eventually )
This game has certainly lived up to hype. I am glad this first attempt at a open world game based on samurai was done by sony’s first party. My personal goty. 30 hours in and I haven't even tried fast travel yet ( only use it to get to cross castle Kanada since the gates remain shut)
Another great game to review is Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. AWESOME!!!
i'm about halfway through act 1 and I've put about 9-10 hours into it already and have also had a few emotional moment...not spoiling anything but when you first meet Lady Masako...i mean wow
Def a lot of my thoughts in this video.
Still in Act II, but
Setting: Absolutely breathtaking. Aside from the pathway of the rivers being horrendous and impossible, not basing it on real Tsushima is a good choice. Mountains/Swamps/Forests/Plains are much more fun than thin beaches and forested mountains. Plenty of present day places in Tsushima get name dropped as locations on the map.
History: Pretty much entirely original, but a lot of the stories they tell in the legendary missions, in conversation, or even the places on the map that have people's names like Saicho or Kiyomori allude to actual Japanese historical figures and stories so you can tell they did some homework.
Story: Perfectly fine and fun to play through. Characters perspectives are pretty interesting, but yeah the whole retaking the island thing while Khotun Khan just sits and watches makes this feel like it should be set post Kamikaze, and the amount of effort he's putting into taking this one tiny island makes it feel more like the title should be Ghost of Kyushu.
Combat/Weapons/Armor: Again perfectly fine, more options would be nice but the stuff we're given is good. In this regard you can def tell this is a "first entry" and that these issues would be ironed out in future installments, but I think players would be justified in expecting more in 2020. Feels like what I might have expected out of a game made in 2014.
I would never call this game accurate, but I would say it has verisimilitude. It feels authentically Samurai vs Mongol moreso than it resembles what Samurai vs Mongol actually was.
And since this is by far the biggest project Sucker Punch has ever attempted (they only have 10 games spread across 4 franchises) I really can't praise them enough for how this turned out. Def excited to see how they build on these ideas/experiences with the new tools the next gen will afford them.
The story gets better there 👌👌
7:25 This is exactly how I’ve been playing the game so far. The world feels so alive that you just wanna take it all in and bask into it.
So happy this game brought me here, will you review the lethal difficulty mode?
Side note | anybody else going back to watch every video on this channel?
I can't tell you how much I agreed with the segment about choice. I myself wanted to pursue a honorable path, but the game prevented me from doing so, and it almost felt like the game played me. I've watched quite a few reviews on this game and none of them talked about this point. Thank You!
This game went straight to my top 10 games of all time, and possibly my favorite Samurai Game. It does so much so well and in such a fun way that many of the 'short-comings' don't bother me at all. From audio-visual to the incredibly fun combat, I just felt that Jin was truly the storm above Tsushima, devastating the mongols and the foolish bandits and ronin that dared prey upon the people. Amazing game, A+.
Btw, as always, awesome video, man! Super accurate, great commentary and it's always a joy to see your videos pop up on my feed.
This is the best game of the year and that is coming from someone who owns all the 3 consoles and is a huge last if us fan. This game is a masterpiece, one of the if not the most beautiful game I have ever played. The HDR is so good. And don't even get me started on that combat.
If they make a GOT2, A section of the mainland could be involved and they send a message for Jin’s aid in the fight to rid Kyoto or somewhere else of Mongols. That would be interesting!!
My thoughts too. I'd give it a solid 8. Lacking in some areas but damn is it a beautiful 'world' they've created. Kurosawa mode was a diminishment overall. Yes it may look like his films but if he were to make his movies today, I think he'd make them in glorious 4k HDR.
Have you seen some of the Chinese hate about it? Claiming the game makes the Mongols (and thereby the Chinese) look bad? I wonder how they would've felt when the Mongol armies conquered China.
New sub here
Kurosawa’s Ran is nice
One thing to mention is that the Chinese hate is actually a minority of people and just popular Chinese media outlets. A majority of Chinese don’t really mind the game, a lot even loved the game. There was a point of contention when the mongols in the game wrote in Chinese which gave mixed messages.
You are the first reviewer to talk about that lack of choice, regarding playing as an honorable samurai.I personally lost my stuff at one point..I wont spoil, but you can probably guess when.. in act 2... It seemed so counter to how I was allowed to play threw most the game as mostly honorable. And it was a major moment to let someone important to see your as samurai.
I still play it every day to chill. If nothing else than walking through the beautiful world they created. I agree 100% with the point you made about being restricted to being the Ghost. My first play through I didn’t assassinate anyone and always equipped Samurai Armour and was so disappointed when I was forced down the path of the ghost. My 2nd play through fully embracing the ghost is much more enjoyable knowing that you’re forced to abandon the samurai tradition anyway. I’m at two minds about the future of story. Jin Sakai could be described as “The First Ninja”, but if they go that route and have Jin leading a Ninja clan it would take away from the history of Ninja coming from peasantry. But I’m excited for the future either way. The first ending I chose was the “honourable” choice and true to the samurai way and I literally have never cried so much at a game. 9/10 from me.
currently replaying this on my PS5, this game is so beautiful it deserves a replay in glorious 60fps if possible.
It's strange hearing the English voice acting.
An Accessory to Mordor weeb freak
@An Accessory to Mordor That was my attitude as well, but I watched some gameplay and realised that I was looking at the subtitles all the time! So I opted for English - obviously Japanese would have been perfect, but they did a good job with the English version too
A cool idea for a sequel, if they ever decide to make one, would be the second mongol invasion from the perspective of the mongols. Hearing the tales of the Ghost, as overdramatized legend, rather than how we live them in the first game, would add an element of impending doom coming into the invasion. Then once the invasion picks up, the samurai have learned from Jin. They conduct night raids, mongol commanders go missing, or are found beheaded or poisoned. The progression from legend to reality of the Ghost from a mongol perspective would be terrifying. And then ending off the game with the mongols being driven back once again, specifically by monsoons, would further cement the Ghost’s legend, especially if Jin had died by this point. He would become a specter, ever vigilant and watching over Tsushima, or Japan as a whole
This is the best game in the market. The soundtrack to this entire game is as captivating as the landscapes. Soon this level of detail will be available in a mixed reality experience
Love your channel and had to hear your insight. I am a gamer pretty much exclusively on PC so I wanted to say that my experience has been incredible right out of the gate. Albeit 4 years or so late. Armor loadouts now exist and many graphical issues have been fixed. It is totally worth checking out on PC if your rig is up to snuff and you enjoyed it as much as you did.
Also. I almost forgot. The mouths are synced up for either language now!
with Ghost of Tsushima I can stop asking for another Onimusha remake/sequel/reboot
and even Tenchu, the stealth here is kinda better than in Tenchu lol
definitely all the little things make it a great experience
25:04 You actually can have presets, as the game remembers which charms you have in each armor. So the Traveler's Attire is used for exploring, the Ronin Attire (and later, the Ghost Armor) is used for stealth, the Samurai Clan Armor is used for tanking, Tadayori's Armor is used for archery, and the Sakai, Gosaku, and Kensei Armor are good for different types of combat encounters. I switch between armor often, and I love that the game doesn't force me to change my charms each time. FF7R could have learned something from this.
Wait how can you do the presets and does it like automatically pick the charms for you when he gets the armors.
Fun Fact: Jin Sakai has the same Japanese Voice Actor as Zoro from One Piece - Kazuya Nakai
Fun fact: the Japanese voice actor for Jin also voices zoro in one piece
And taka is ussop
Julie Tonelli ussop is best straw hat
Easily
Can't agree more. Aside any minor issue this game have, I still playing it over and over and probably will replay for a long time
on that note of Jin using a Katana, it actually looks like he's using a small Tachi, even though the game calls it a Katana.
I say this because of the sword's actual design. The curve of a katana stops at the handle, but on a Tachi it continues throughout the whole frame. Historically this would mean two very different fighting styles, where a curved handle sword would involve more one-handed motions and limited two-handed techniques, perfect for horseback and armored fighting. The straight handle would allow greater motion with a two-handed stance. That being said, Jin does actually fight the way a warrior with a Katana would, and although a lot of techniques are interchangeable, the way Jin fights only mimics Katana stances, despite his sword being just a short Tachi, he also wears it edge-up.
I started the game about 5 days ago. just started Act 2 because there is SO much to do! Half the time I’m just exploring this very well made world. GOT is the BEST game I have EVER PLAYED.
All im saying is that ghost stance awakening is probably one of the best gaming moments ever.
There are so many opportunities for a sequel, if they want to change the setting and not do the Second Mongol Invasion. Maybe you could play as the founder of Clan Sakai, fighting a guerilla campaign against the Taira while the Minamoto are still in exile. Another idea I had is maybe a game where you play as Nakamura Chobei, the bandit who reportedly killed Akechi Mitsuhide, or Yasuke, the African samurai, after Honno-ji, on a quest to kill Mitsuhide and avenge Nobunaga. So many possible ideas for where this franchise could go.
Really loved this in depth review. Convinced me to subscribe to the channel. I am absolutely loving playing this game. I also find myself just walking everywhere and spending a lot of time just looking at the beautiful vistas.
You are right, this is not a historical game. It's more based on Akira Kurosawa samurai films. It's meant to be the samurai fantasy. As for as the Katana - they chose to call it that because that is what most people know it by. In the japanese version, they use the name Tachi. Anyway, it was my favorite game.
If they were going on track with history they wouldn’t have you play as a samurai who can come out completely unscathed in one against twelve combat and almost single handedly liberate the island of Tsushima
Physical copies of this game SOLD OUT in Japan. For an American game by an American developer, about one of the great events in Japanese history, that...Is INCREDIBLE!
I just beat this game yesterday, and man it was such an awesome experience. I was absolutely blown away with how high quality it was from start to finish. This game sparked my interest in samurai history, which led me to discover this channel! Love your videos.
My appreciation of it comes them getting kenjutsu practitioners to do the motion captures. Even the live-action Rurouni Kenshin film failed to get kenjutsu practitioners as stunt coordinator. Hence, the fly-swatting swordsmanship.
I played the game with japanese voices, Rononoa Zoro as Jin is amazing.
Damn bro Orochi has some good clothing. Just brought the Kensei Shirt.
For me this game is absolutely astounding. The last Samurai game that I played was Bushido Blade on the PSX (Yes. I'm that old.). I've been yearning for a spiritual successor to that series of games and while I do wish that Sucker Punch would've had given us the choice of either playing as a samurai or the ghost (with great endings for each); I do have to say I'm extremely pleased with what we got.
The lack of a lock on feature was a bit jarring for me at first; however after I got used to the particular flow of combat, I didn't even think about it more.
Ghost of Tsushima is "The Last Samurai" of video games IMHO.
Even years later, fondness remains for both. Despite historical inaccuracy, both titles are so enjoyable, people take note, accept it and go right back to enjoying the two as if nothing happened.
Shimura: "You have no honour."
Jin: "And you are a slave to it."

Jin: "Let me live in peace."
Shimura: "Taking your head is my punishment."

This game has nice environment aesthetics, nice dialogues, nice story and amazing tracks.
Bonus Booty Scenes during onsens that shocks people the first time.
I just bought this game for 30USD, hope to get it next week.
That "Stupid" Netflix Docu realy got me into this era again. Hope the game is great.
I love the game. It is outstanding. Your grip about the camera is understandable, but the developers wanted it this way to simulate the difficulty of opponents coming from all sides.
I'd give it a 9/10. I guess I'm a little more forgiving on its downsides. I'm just so thankful to be able to finally play a game like this. But I have to thank you Shogunate for such a brilliant review. You nailed straight on the head with all the redeeming features of this game. The story alone was fantastic, especially the end. I honestly was not expecting the story to go so deep, and it makes you cry and think at the same time. All the actors deserve awards.
100%'ed the game, I hope there's gonna be more games like this in the future. And I'm praying for a new game plus.
I'm getting it yet friday since I had bills to pay. But I keep watching videos on combat, and non spoiler reviews cause I can't stop after taking up the way of japanese sword I remember the days where you got called out for cultural appropriation for being invested in this culture and way of life. This is the game I need in my life.
