The two biggest surprises for everyone is that the song starts off with Tim, usually known as Mr. Bass, singing the lead tenor part and sounding good and then Chance singing bass, which he used to do in his previous group. The fact is that Tim, Austin and Rob all sing in the same range as Cam, the original singer of the song. This song is saved for reactors because of Tim's unexpected range.

    • @vinnieblair8576
      @vinnieblair8576 6 месяцев назад +12

Tim's range is no surprise any more as most reactors hear songs friom his solo album and other HF songs like Snow Globe, where he sings tenor, long before they react to Mayday!

The original song was by a woman named "Cam" - they sing it in the same key. For more surprises you need to watch "Mayday Live" & "9-5 Beatboxing Breakdown". They're all vocal chameleons - Tim has a 5+ octave range; Tim & Chance trade off singing bass; Austin & Rob do so with tenor & Adam has a great range and singing voice. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

You're right about Rob doing heavy and lite. Tim sang tenor in one of his previous vocal groups and Chance sang bass for his previous vocal group. They both have incredible range. If you want to hear an instrumental interlude check out Home Free's Can't Stop the Feeling.

You weren't supposed to know Tim Foust could sing high, but you did some of his solo stuff and ruined that surprise. But at least you hadn't heard Chance go this low before. The real reason we always tell reactors to wait for Mayday is so they are shocked by Tim singing tenor 😊

Rob is a vocal chameleon - he doesn't have the octave range of Tim but he can sing beautifully in such a range of styles. And Chance is vocal velvet. Adam Rupps percussion on this one is perfect. And then there's Tim the tenor and Austin - how can you resist them?

I think because you reacted to Snow Globe, you saw Tim sing in a high tenor, so you were not surprised with Tim's high tenor intro in this, but quite surprised by Chance's bass note. However, you are the very first reactor I have seen to notice and mention Rob's range from a low full tenor operatic voice to a high alto range in this one. Good catch! You really need to see Rob perform in their cover of End of the Road and the unbelievable riffs he does in that one.

  • @terramorris5188
    @terramorris5188 6 месяцев назад +2

The big surprise is Tim going high up in his range. Most people are not expecting tim to use his tenor voice everyone more or less probably waiting for tim to hit the really low notes but chance covers those in this song. Great reaction 👍
Also chance dropping the bass. Those are reasons why homefries say to wait because if you just always think the guys sing the same way all the time they like to change it up.

This song is one of my favorites. We usually ask reactors to wait to react to this song till they are familiar with the individual members. Then they are surprised at hearing the switch ups in the voices. Tim who is known for his bass can sing in a beautiful higher tenor voice along with Austin & Rob. And Chance can hit the lower bass notes when needed. Adam did a fabulous job as always with his vocal percussion. The original song is sung by a woman Cam, so they sung it in a higher key to match the original range.

Red - Most reactors reach "Mayday" without a full appreciation of Tim's upper range and the fact that Chance would be an excellent bass in any other group. Due to all the Christmas song reactions, you weren't quite as shocked to hear Tim (a basso profondo) take the lead and do it in the same key as the original soprano singer, Cam. (BTW, if you didn't get a chance to hear her version, it will give you an even BETTER appreciation of HF's performance! Cam's original is here: ruclips.net/video/eRrCMEXPjWo/видео.html ) This one is among their all-time best!!!
    ------
There are still MANY MORE great songs in HF's catalog...and they keep adding great new stuff. As you try to spread out your HF reactions (avoiding the urge to binge out), you might want to pencil in "American Pie" ( ruclips.net/video/9RlTZdYXcKg/видео.html ) for February 3. This is a joint performance with the original artist, Don McLean. They recorded this in 2021 (during COVID lockdown) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song...and released it on February 3, the day the music died.

Cam is an alto not a soprano. Her vocal range is almost the same as a male tenor.
      Soprano: C4 to A5
      Mezzo-soprano: A3 to F#5
Alto: G3 to E5 (and contralto as F3-D5)
      Tenor: roughly C3 to A4
      Baritone: A2 to F4
      Bass: F2 to E4

The surprise was Tim singing high (usually the super low bass guy) he was a 3rd tenor in this song and Chance sang Bass, which is what he normally does the background bass when Tim is singing a solo, but this made it obvious about how versatile their voices are too because they each got their solo bits with their different voice range.

As usual I loved your reaction. This cover was a little older, before Tim had come out with his solo doo wop covers where he showed off his high range and falsetto voice. That is why the experienced Home Fries say wait until you are familiar with the guys and their "normal" ranges. That way you know Tim is the BASS guy. This song was originally written and performed by a female country singer, Cam. Tim, Austin and Rob all come in singing in the same key as the female singer, Cam. Especially with Tim leading off in that high register and most people not yet exposed to his high range it delivers the surprise impact that was intended. Then Chance hitting that deep bass note that is down in Tim's space is the double whammy. Chance was the bass singer in another group before Home Free snagged him up and he is able to cover the bass harmony when Tim is singing lead. For a really deep Tim song check out Peter Hollens Misty Mountains, featuring Tim Faust. And for a good sample Of Chance's singing check out Wayfaring Stranger with The Hound and the Fox. Beautiful folksy ballad. And then of course there is Chance's original Sea Shanty, "Skull and Bones", which I have already recommended. We say they cover all genres of music, but your description as musical chameleons is just spot on, loved it. Looking forward to what ever Home Free song you cover next.

So glad you got to see this.
When it first dropped, Adam was still relatively new and no one expected him to drop down to that register.
Likewise, Tim's solo stuff wasn't out yet and all most ppl knew of him was how Flippin deep he sang. If you watch some other rxns (older ones), to a person, EVERYONE paused 3 notes in bc they thought that couldn't possibly be him.
You had the advantage of hearing his range already, but when it first came out, that was mind-blowing.
The final piece of the puzzle is that this is by Cam, a powerful feminine singer, and tge guys kept it in the SAME KEY instead of dropping it down a bit for male voices. Really impressive.
Now that Tim & Chance's ranges are well documented, the "you're not ready for Mayday" is kind of more tongue-in-cheek for the Home Fries... almost a running gag.
I will say this is a great opportunity for you to begin exploring some older songs. "End of the Road" and the "Butts Remix" are absolute show-stoppers.
    Great rxn, RHN!

I pretty much knew you’d be ready for Tim’s higher range since you reacted to one of his solo covers. What I figured would surprise you was Rob’s vocals (as you said after reacting to the opera song and his rich and lower tones), and Chance’s low note he dropped. I was surprised you didn’t say anything, or realize that Tim was singing vocals and not bass and you would realize that Chance held down the bass throughout the song, and very well, indeed! I would love to see you react to a couple of songs where Rob and/or Chance have/exchange lead vocals. (One of my favorite things) One song is where Rob and Austin lead, and Rob really shows of his vocals (especially towards the end) is their cover of “End of the Road”. The other is a Rob/Chance switch off on Keith Urban’s cover of “Blue Ain’t Your Color”. It’s a very special video because there is some really cool choreography (which Home Free is normally not known for.). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one! We Home Fries love reactor’s reactions to this one, mostly because they’ve not been exposed to Tim’s full range prior to seeing this video!

Howdy Red. Thank you so much for another wonderful reaction to Home Free. For 50 years my all-time favorite band was The Moody Blues, then back in 2020 I discovered Home Free and they became my number one. And as others have said, the main reason reactors are told to wait on listening to Mayday is due to Tim taking the lead high tenor since it is so different from his usual sub-basement level bass. I'm sure that if Tim ever retired or left Home Free, Chance is more than capable of taking over the bass, since he already does it when Tim shows off his high range, lol. I personally would love for you ro react/listen to Tim's solo "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow / Stay". The second half being Tim's homage to the 1963 version by the Four Seasons.

It's not fair to those of us with under a 3 octave range that Tim can sing 2 octaves lower than I can and then sing up in the stratosphere as well. Note: I know he's put a ton of work into it and it doesn't just happen. Then to hear Austin flip from chest to mix to head to falsetto so effortlessly. It's not fair, but it's why I love these guys. They have put in the work to master their craft and it shows!

As much as you're appreciating the vocal percussion you have to check out Adam Rupp's Drum Solo videos. He's a master percussionist.

I still regularly catch myself thinking about the drummer or the bass player....
Chameleon is exactly the word I was going to use. They know their instrument so well, they can get it to do almost anything. Until recently, most reactors had not seen Tim's do-wop stuff to get used to his upper range, so the first few notes usually brings a look of dumbfounded confusion. But in addition to Tim, you get Chance's beautiful bass and as you pointed out, yet another of Rob's voices. That they did this in the same key as Cam did just adds one more layer of 'wow'.
And you are welcome. Home Fries love to introduce people to HF because we are fairly certain they will love HF as much as we do.

    Hello you beautiful Ginger!
You’ve quickly become my favorite music lover. I’m like you, a cappella seemed a distant option in the pantheon of music. Once I heard these guys and Pentatonix, I was hooked. I’ve always liked harmonies, like the Eagles or The Doobie Brothers and Outlaws, so it wasn’t too much of a shock. I’m here to join you on your journey, stay with it.
