James's dad who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 4 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.
I don't know where this got started about this being the first time his dad heard it. James have talked about this on multiple interviews and that is not what happened. This was not the first time his dad heard it. This song is so good that it doesn't need this added fake story. I assume you think this is true as many people do, as it has sort of spread as a part of this story.

Awesome reaction, I also lost my father in 2017,he had cancer but wouldn't tell me trying to protect me at 48 years old, I drive a big truck for a living and doctors told me to hurry home,the closer i got they would call me when he became unstable and when I got to the hospital and went to his room the door somehow wouldn't open then a a minute later the nurse came out and said he just passed, I'm glad people get to say goodbye to their loved ones because I never had the chance. After finding this song 1 day ago, I cannot stop watching and I can't stop crying. This is what it is to be human, life just comes down to the closeness of people from the first breath to our last. Somehow we get lost in chasing the 'things' and do not invest enough in our humanity. Now I am going to find anther persons reaction and subject myself to my reactions to this song.

I lost my dad 18 years ago and this song gets ne every time , just beautiful.
that is his father in the video with him ,he wrote it when his father was terminal ill in hospita, there was no one who was able to donate what he neded, but at the last moment someone was found and he pulled through
A distant cousin had seen the video when it was released got tested and was a match. James's father has some years previously donated one of his kidneys to someone else in need.

When James and his father were both officers serving in the Army as James left to deploy to Kosovo apparently his father said to him “I’m not your father, you’re not my son, we’re just 2 grown men saying goodbye”! So emotional.

I was hesitant to watch this because the song makes me cry every time I listen to it because I too lost my father and I said to myself you’ll get through it. Sweetie...I'm 72 years old and have lost my parents a long time ago. My mother's death had to be the toughest thing I have ever faced. Your reaction was the same as mine. This song reminded me so much of her. Please don't dwell on the death so much that you forget about the good things that happened between you two.
