- We're out for a day-long enduro ride, racing the 72V 13kW Sur Ron against a KTM 350 EXC-F.
From suspensions to power, the Sur Ron has been modified for serious off-road riding. It has a 72V battery with a Nucular controller, Hope V4 brakes, Marzocchi fork and a Rock Shox.
These two bikes are extremely different: the KTM is twice as heavy as the Sur Ron, but features suspensions with an extra 100mm of stroke, bigger, wider tyres and a lot more power.
Despite their differences, these bikes can ride alongside one another in harmony. The most surprising part though, is that even in a drag race, it's a very very close call!

I move 70mph on 13kws. Only thing that would slow me down is the suspension in this kind of race. Its so clear to see that the ktm is just gliding over everything and the sur rin is wiggling all over the place

On a roulé 3h le matin, en Km je saurais pas dire. En tout terrain tu réalises que t’avances pas tant que ça 🤣
Entre les grimpettes et la session jardinage on a dû faire 30km environ.

Hows the range compared to stock surron?
This particular battery is kinda small. But still getting 2/3 hours of hard riding depending on the terrain.

Hey man, yeah, should do that at some point. Unfortunately, where we ride we don't have much large and straight lines, loads of forest trails where pinning the throttle more than 3 secs isn't a possibility 😝
In any case, a 350 tops at around 150 where my Surron won't go much over 110, so there's not a lot of suspense.
You can see the ktm is more stable due to the weight and the rear tyre width! But the Surron is flying !!! On the back wheel for fun it’s practically a unicycle!
I use mine off road and because it’s so light you can manoeuvre anywhere !
Completely true. Once you throw a 21/18 set at it, it gets much more stable though.

Apparemment sur du technique la gestion du couple est difficile à gérer ?
Pour avoir eu un modèle d essais une journée j ai adoré sauf l autonomie à peine 30 kms en roulant comme avec ma thermique. Si l on pouvait faire au moins 80 km ce serait parfait.
J ai eu aussi un LMX préparé et il y avait un récupérateur d Energie manuel que j actionnait en remplacement du frein Ar c était très intéressant car on peut récupérer 20% de charge
Avec la plupart des contrôleurs, tu peux régler la réponse de l'accélérateur (cf cette video ruclips.net/video/RnCa0WzzXQE/видео.html ).
Sur le contrôleur d'origine, tu as plusieurs modes de régénération (plus ou moins de frein moteur). Mais de nouveau, avec les contrôleurs "aftermarket" tu peux avoir de la régen variable, et il y a du choix : soit avec un une poignée d'accel qui peut "aller en négatif", soit avec un contrôle au pouce (type accélérateur quad), soit via une activation au freinage, soit via une pédale de frein au pied !
Enfin, pour l'autonomie, avec une batterie plus haute performance, tu peux tout à fait atteindre des autonomies comparables.

Great content. Just curious that KTM 350 is a serious off road bike and you have an incredibly powerful ebike. What's the cost of each (Yours with all of your upgrades) and his with all the upgrades? And for that style of riding you did in the video which do you prefer? Sounds like you can certainly hang with that bike. I'm curious if it's cheaper or more expensive.
You won't have me saying the KTM isn't a great bike! But unless it's really open (rallye raid or desert riding), any time of the day, as soon as it gets very technical and single-tracky, I feel more at ease on the Surron.
For this type of harsh terrain though, it would deserve what I call the "enduro" wheel set: 21/18 (check the test in my "Big Wheels" video).
In its current shape, my bike is around 10k whereas the KTM is a bit more expensive.
His KTM is the Factory edition with fully prepared suspensions. It's around 12k.
The difference isn't huge, both bikes are great, there are things one can do where the other has a hard time for both bikes.

Please, the electric bike is an agency that comes with 60 volts. What did you upgrade in it to reach this strength and the long spin?
Loads of upgrades. But power-wise it's just battery and controller. I'm running it at 72V, but you can get about the same power with an upgraded 60V battery (the controller is the key here).

Je trouve la comparaison intéressante mais quand on voit la somme que tu as du rajouter pour tout ça : "batterie de 72V et d'un contrôler Nucular 24F, de freins Hope V4, d'une fourche Marzocchi Bomber 58 et d'une suspension arrière Rock Shox Vivid R2C." ça fait quand meme un surron à presque 10000€ !!!
Vs une thermique ou même une freeride difficile de mettre autant d'argent dans un mix vélo/moto qui a la base se veut être un low cost Chinois :-p.
Sans parler de toute la main d’œuvre pour monter tout ce matériel sans tout casser ou faire griller la batterie ou le contrôleur lol.

Toutes les upgrades ne sont pas indispensables. On pourrait se contenter de la partie puissance si c'est juste cela que l'on cherche.
Le matos de VTT coute assez cher, c'est un fait. Mais il y a pas mal d'options à des prix intermédiaires (pour les freins y'a les Saints, Magura… par exemple)/
Cependant, la plupart de mes potes qui roulent en thermique font des prépa suspensions, parfois une carto moteur, donc ils rajoutent aussi, sur une base déjà plus chère (mais clairement moins en proportion du prix initial).

how r u not melting the motor? what temps r u running into
With 72V and proper gearing, temps stay under control. Also, on high speed trails, you get some helping airflow. The motor rarely goes beyond 75C as far as I'm concerned.

Salut ! On est de Lyon. Les 2 sont ultras fun, mais c'est difficile de comparer car ce sont vraiment des machines très différentes. Pour du singletrack et de l'enduro vraiment technique, je préfères la Light. Si c'est pour le désert marocain ou du gros circuit MX, la thermique !

52T bro. The motor is fine, rarely good beyond 70C, but I'm running 72V, it helps keeping the temps under control.

Après sur un circuit de MX (conçu pour les MX), à mon avis, ça fait pas le poids face à un cross.
Just one quick comment, obviously the 350 has more power and can ride longer. But if you take an inexperienced rider and put them on a Sur Ron, they’ll absolutely rip and progress quickly. If you put the same rider on a 350, it’s gonna take some time. They’ll get there. I just think Sur Rons are the best training tool to learn the fundamentals before getting a crazy powerful gas bike.
More raw power, but as we saw, it's power to weight that matters and from 0 to 50 or 60, the Surron has the advantage. Then training tool or not, they are just different bikes and one doesn't replace the other. Tight trails, Surron is unbeatable, desert and open areas, big bike for sure.

Oui à très haute vitesse le poids d'une enduro devient ton ami car il apporte une certaine stabilité, les suspensions et les gros pneus sont vraiment aussi de sacrés atouts à vitesse élevée.

Should upgrade the surron with BAC 8000 controller or KO DC motor and controller you should get around 25kw with BAC 8000 and 30kw with the KO it will hammer the 350cc
At some point it’s more than power. At very high speeds the bike isn’t as stable as a full size. It’s a very nimble bike made to be unbeatable in technical trails
