There were other really fun video clips I captured at that I haven't yet had a chance to edit and post, but I couldn't wait any longer to share this one with you guys of the Spitfire with a reported 90" wingspan.
I hope you enjoy and cringe watching this Spitfire RC Plane Crash as much as my girlfriend and I did!

Here is some history for the scale version of this plane:
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries throughout the Second World War. The Spitfire continued to be used as a front line fighter and in secondary roles into the 1950s. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only British fighter in continuous production throughout the war.[5]
The Spitfire was designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft[6] by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works (which operated as a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong from 1928). Mitchell continued to refine the design until his death from cancer in 1937, whereupon his colleague Joseph Smith became chief designer.[7] Where speed was seen as essential to carrying out the mission of home defense against enemy bombers,[6] the Spitfire's thin cross-section elliptical wing allowed it a higher top speed than several contemporary fighters, including the Hawker Hurricane.[8]
During the Battle of Britain (July--October 1940), the Spitfire was perceived by the public as the RAF fighter, though the more numerous Hawker Hurricane shouldered a greater proportion of the burden against the Luftwaffe. The Spitfire units had a lower attrition rate and a higher victory-to-loss ratio than those flying Hurricanes.[9]
After the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command, and saw action in the European, Mediterranean, Pacific and the South-East Asian theatres. Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire served in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, carrier-based fighter, and trainer. It was built in many variants, using several wing configurations.[10] Although the original airframe was designed to be powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine producing 1,030 hp (768 kW), it was adaptable enough to use increasingly powerful Merlin and later Rolls-Royce Griffon engines producing up to 2,035 hp (1,520 kW).[11] Развлечения

On the positive side, those retracts survived that abysmal landing well!!
Good point!
Shame the pilot wasn't thinking. It was porpoising wildly on the first attempt, on the verge of the stall. Simply power on go around and BEFORE attempt two, lift the speed and raise the flaps. That pilot was NEVER going to get the three pointer he was aiming for. A hotter wheeler and it would have been fine. MIGHT have nosed her over on slowing, like all Spits want to do, and lost a prop not a wingtip.
It was simply TOO slow and the glide ratio of a hurled stone came into being.....AHHHH let's all love that WAFER THIN, good at 350mph+ ellipse.
Flying... for the purpose of collecting of an experience is the best way to become a good RC-pilot .... but ..... it is also very very expensive.....It's a pity!...Hi GBLand thanks for sharing
Going by the elevator response on the approach, and the way it seemed to turn, would suspect it was running a bit tail heavy.
Not good for a spitfire.
Cowl removed making it worse.
Watching it taxi out at the start with absolutely no nose-over tendency made me instantly think ‘tail heavy’. A Spitfire should balance at about 22% root chord and should tend to nose over in a fast taxi on grass.
Sounded like you was expecting the crash lol. Shame about the plane. Enjoyed watching, cheers and have another thumbs up.
+RCANTs Sadly I did. He is doesn't have the fundamentals down and it is always hairy when he tries to fly.
Lmao worth going to see.
he should learn to fly a trainer before buying a gas warbird, what is he thinking
I agree! Here is the scary part.....he has a turbine jet! It is a sad story when you have a big wallet but dumb thumbs......
@@GBLynden wow, it must be sad watching him try to land one of those
I haven't seen him try because that field is so short, but he did a ground demo and loved the attention.
Makes me wonder if very many rc flyers are aware that there are such things as flight simulators and fairly cheap high wing trainers for less expensive 'one and done' flights...
Strong retracts :)
Looks to be a PICA spitfire ? Cg on the plans are wrong apparently. In this case it looks like tad tail heavy.
The CG seemed off for sure! The cowl was not on it and I bet that made it more tail heavy than it needed to be.
Say after me 'You do not use elevator to control the decent'
Bingo. Yep, PIO from not using proper throttle management. Notice his turns are all bank and yank. He needs some stick time with a large trainer.
Is that a decent descent or an indecent descent?
'I shall use elevators to controll dcent'
No it is not easy to land RCAdventure but by the time you get to fly something like a Spitfire you should have mastered it !
I can feel with you
It was a bad crash for sure.
Spitfire's are notorious for tip stalls and this is exactly what he did because he was trying to land too damn slow for the aircraft!
Yes sir! He does his own thing lol
Especially when you are landing downwind!
You know when the engine cowling wasn't put back on this was a "I'm flying it no matter what" kinda day.
So true!
Nice video, it was edited short and to the point of the title... I knew the pilot was in trouble on the first approach (seemed nervous).. a couple beers before the flight woulda probably helped
Thanks Michael! The pilot has a rep for being a coke head (I don’t know him though and his wife is a sweetheart of a lady), but a little liquid expo may have helped lol
@@GBLynden guy looked to be 85. You sure hes a coke head?
This pilot, if you can call him one, obviously has no idea what the principles of flight are. The key to a good landing is a good approach. It looks like he freaked out on the first attempt and got shaky on the sticks.
Antonio Herrmann true, I don't understand why he didn't go around for a better approach.
I newer use elevator in landings, only throttle and rarely crash them. One lasted 7 years but when tryed floats it crashed and i throw it away.A c 182 150 cm but no flying the Corvalis rc.
he should of been coming in a little more hot, let off the elevator till the last couple of inches, low wingers are awful at stall speeds especially a spit lol
Must have a lot of foam experience.
GIve those pilots some water... they're all choking over there!
LOL one guy crashed you big silly....
@@GBLynden
Well, from where I'm standing, I count the Sea Fury [1:11] (electric?, you gotta be kidding me, ppuuuhhhhhhaa!) and the Spitfire [1:57]. That makes at least 2.
Those are isolated moments showing old dudes with wallets larger than their skill sets trying to fly birds they have built. Most builders suck at flying compared to those that focus on just their flying skills.
Knowing the location is a good part of a post like this. Washington state? I understand.
Pilot needed to take some time to trim out and get a handle on how it responds to over-controlling. He's fortunate it came out as well as it did.
From the comments it is easy being a keyboard pilot.
no it's obvious inexperience.... after the second attempt at the flare and the plane veered to the left he should have gone around.... typical inexperienced mistake... he was fixated on that landing..... spits are notorious for tip stalls his overconfidence cost him... is all....
Yep. Need to get a cheap foamie and practice, practice, practice
Yep, never come in on approach to slow, if you carry sufficient energy it's much easier to abort and come back around, the drunken wheel barrow approach often ends in damage.
I agree my friend!
Wow that was some pretty poor flying. Why was he slowing down so high off the strip? Having said that, glad all my mistakes aren't on film lol!
Most pilots die by Landing exidence
They do for sure! His wallet is bigger than his thumbs!
got to learn to flare properly
+Joe Mason Yes he does! I am just the cameraman in this video.
A Warbird needs speed for landing because of its Characteristic...
Correct and not to be flared as high as he did here.
I just inherited its twin. What kit is i
I have no clue, I just captured this at a local event.
Some Expo probably would have helped...
Keep expo off the elevator. Better to have a linear response but with much reduced maximum throw and a safe centre of gravity position - warbirds are very responsive to too much elevator and having expo risks giving that excessive elevator just when you don't need it i.e low and slow. Many models are set up with excesive elevator movement that is never used but will bite you when you least expect it and this is particularly true with warbirds.
shocker
Too many people don't take the time to properly gain their skills. They assume one good flight is an excuse to go bigger and faster. There is a reason people take their time and progress slowly. There are also days when I spend hours just taking off and landing. Sadly, I think every club has at least one of these guys. And everyone knows not to be in the air and to get under cover when they are out there.
Is he the same guy from your Pup video 2 years ago?
I can't figure why newbee R/C pilots don't just pick up the final speed and let the plane glide in like experienced flyers do instead they bring it in high and when the plane is in front of them fly it in the ground
His wallet is bigger than his brain.
The flight mechanic has some words for the pilot about busting his plane (It's loaned to a pilot). ;-)
+T'airn'KA LOL! I love it!
tail heavy clearly . even on take off.
Agreed! The pilot is a moron.
You are right! Sorry. I should say. "that pilot".
+Daniel R. Estevez No worries! I totally agree with your assessment of his skills.
There're only two choices : either you need to improve your landing skill or you need to improve your rebuild skill.
+Harley Davidson Road king Good thing the pilot has deep pockets lol
Some ppl just don't listen when you tell them how challenging a "Spit" is to land. They simply do not like slow landing speeds and abrupt elevator changes.
+2warhammer34 Exactly. When you have the money, skills don't seem to matter lol
It's such a beautiful model. I hope he was able to repair it.
Todd m ok that's fair, I was trying to be gentle.
This also a good example of what multiple flight modes, multiple rates and expo are for. With a landing flight mode he could have softened the elevator and had much better control. I have an aerotow glider that is very pitch sensitive and had to put in a lot of expo in high rate to keep from ballooning upon landing (low is for on-tow, middle for normal flying, high for landing at higher speeds than normal cruising). And I agree that is Spit, if allowed to get slow on landing, is going to be a handful to land. They are a snap roll looking for a place to happen if you get careless. If you're going to fly a plane of this caliber, then also have the proper radio and learn how to program it and take full advantage of its capability.
Mostly every warbird is snappy at slow speeds not just the spit. And it is a beauty to land. Almost every plane does not like abrupt elevator at slow speeds. If you understand the technique to a good landing, you can land anything from a warbird to a jet.
I feel it was tail heavy or it was at the most backward limit of it. This is very common on war birds. Fly them nose heavy and trim it on the air.
+farflyer It is that and poor flying fundamentals.
Back to flyin foamies son!!!
+Rick Davey lol this guy flying it flies Turbine jets too.....
A fool and his money are soon parted....got to love it!!!
+Rick Davey Yes sir! He did do a nice demo on the ground with his jet. It was soooo loud lol
My lawnmowers loud too, doesn't mean I should fly it
Pilot error.flaring that high was going to create a stall.shame as it's a nice model.keeping the nose down is critical with any rc plane not just a spitfire.save the flare for 2 feet off the ground.hope the pilot doesn't get offended by this comment as that's not fair...chin up,get it repaired and try again.
the_shell_magnet why.aren’t.you.using.spaces.after.your. Dots.
I would use it as clipped wings
Sweet!
THAT THING WENT DOWN HARD!
He should fly a much smaller and easier Warbird first and he was so far from the ground and he flared really hi and stalled it
Yep, I called it before it happened in the video.
oh no no !
Waddling out to the plane.....whats left.
They have money but don’t have flying skills.
he shud be flying a trainer first lol and its cheaper for moments like these :) also with a trainer u dont care as much coz the air frame is so cheap which means learning is more fun and not skipping heart beats like his characteristics of that landing shows lol my airframe was like £70
Maybe you should listen again, something was wrong with his elevator
He always flies like that, overriding the elevator with his planes all of the time. His son does it too.
Poor CG placement can make ant pilot look bad...i think it was more improper plane set up, with a touch of poor piloting skill. Anyway...we live, we crash, hopefully we learn. Great vid.
+xbpbat21x Thank you and I agree!
At 1:17, look at the "wind-sock" in the top RHS corner. He is trying to land downwind!
I like it!
I'd blame that womans mouth :))))
lol!
I agree with you.....she needs to shut the hole till hes on the ground....cant stand back seat flyers, especially someone who knows nothing about it
Too fast ad too high should have cut the throttle a long time before. Some spitfires are known to be floaters
Too much elevator, and the c of g too far back without the cowling ?.
coming in waaaay to slow. Low wing planes like a spitfire or p-51 need more speed when landing, or they just tip stall.
Yep! The pilot should know that after that many years of flying.
Tail heavy, it will never flair for landing. Needed lot more nose weight.
He needed more nose weight for sure.
Zannedersem CG problemi var...
Yep and pilot issues......
Need more practice flying before tackling something like this
He sure does!
cut power
Trying too hard to force a landing on a very short runway.
damn shouldnt be flying big scale if they can't fly danG O.o
I agree! I always have my camera going when he is in the air. The scariest part is that he flies turbine jets and can't even handle a basic Warbird landing.
wow that's scary man XD
It really is!
He flies turbine? wow..must be a trainer jet lol...@1:45 did she say not that time lol
The easiest model I flew was a SIG Morrisey Bravo 84" wing 60cc, my first impression was wow this is easy. This Spitfire was over controlled at low speed.
Hi brother, it is not at all easy to land an airplane
You posted this why?
+Rick Davey Why not? It is entertaining and shows people what NOT to do.
Well, I get that...but also paints our hobby in a very unflattering light...but, then that being said, no one really expects these guys to be responsible pilots...
+Rick Davey I hear you. The good news is it was in a controlled environment and the only damaged was his ego and plane lol
pilot error....btw,its not that giant model !!
+TheSakamura It is described as a giant model but I agree with the pilot error.
It’s called a buddy box. Yikes.
lol this was at a Warbird event. The same one is happening this weekend.
GBLynden's RC do they hand out buddy boxes lol
Hahaha nah, this guy is an example of someone that has money and thinks he is good enough to fly RC Planes in front of people. He has been at it for years and many of the best pilots at the club have offered to help sharpen his skills. His ego is too big to listen though....
GBLynden's RC well at least you guys have some entertainment.
GBLynden's RC do you fly ?
Lol
Un bon conseil : apprenez d'abord à piloter avec un avion de début à aile haute, avant de vous lancer dans ce genre de modèles.
Vous avez raison. This video serves as a good example of "not trying to run before you can walk ...". Also, IF you doubt your flying skills AND don't want to re-build, ASK a better pilot for some help.
Apprenez à voler avec un avion à aile haute et foutez la paix aux warbirds
I am just the cameraman, but I do agree!
That whole field is full of big pockets, no skill.
Full is an exaggeration, but that pilot certainly has poor flying skills versus what he buys.
That not how to land get a trainer and learn how to flare
If only the pilot would listen to such advice. I am just the guy on the camera.
GBLynden's RC I knew your a camera but I thought the pilot have relation with you and the channel he I’m a kid and I can land much better
That is understandable. He is an older guy flying at an RC Warbird event. He always crashes and won't listen to tips from better pilots from what I have heard. Oh well, it makes for entertain videos lol
well maybe next but a disclamers, you know what this guy remind alot about me my frist scrach build 'rc' plane was a B-29 with a lot of moving parts
too tail heavy, elevator twitchy.
Need a few lessons if you're flying giant scale warbirds. that was obvious pilot error
Wow, not a clue about how to land!
Totally true!
This pilot can't fly for peanuts!
Sounds like a barrel of monkeys doing the flying and the narrating as well. This plane looks very pitch sensitive the entire flight so either tail heavy or his rates are too high...maybe both. Also when setting up for landing a well trimmed airplane should gradually descend at slower speeds [less lift] and using "down elevator" [like the guy narrating says] on landing approach is NOT a good sign that things are adjusted well. A lot of pilots like to start high on final and let the plane drop in and start flaring at the threshold because it's easier to judge speed that way as opposed to flying an airplane straight toward yourself in a flat approach and depending on depth perception. Can't tell but if he's not using different flight modes linked to the flap setting then his trim with and without flaps could be markedly different and that will make things very difficult as well when he adds flaps. . He should have practiced a few landing approaches high up before he did one for real.
You sir are a ray of sunshine 🤣🤣🤣
Also, leave the talking for after the landing....too much yaking is too distracting....sounded like a young person....no experience
I don't understand this comment. The guy flying it was an old guy. The person recording it told his GF to pay close attention because the old guy always crashes and predicted the issues before they happened. How does that resonate with your no experience comment?
