Two Johns and Hugo Martin showed me that for a product that has nerds as its main demographic (almost all of them, to some extent, e.g. sports nerds are nerds as well) the need for a nerd on the leadership/vision is non-negotiable.
doom 3 had some of the creepiest demon designs: like those baby fused with flies, or the spiders with human face, those gave me the creeps when i was in my teens
Doom 3 lighting is actually pretty impressive even without age taken into account, at least for me. it looks a little crude but its very precise and works well with the intended atmosphere. All of that is shown off even better in the vr mod
I already didn't like the 2016 shotgun after starting with Doom II because it felt so weak against even imps and soldiers, can't imagine what forums were like back when Doom 3 first came out.
I appreciated it for being its own thing. I know Doom 3 was polarizing but I think the experience only helped id refine their skills in making later games. Doom 3 certainly hasn't aged too well, especially in its level design. But I liked the art direction, the monster designs are interesting and it certainly is atmospheric. The shocks got cheap and annoying after the first hour, but the game remained creepy and unsettling throughout. Or at least until you pulled out the chainsaw and went on a rampage.
I appreciated for how this uses the most realistic scenario if a demonic invasion ever happened. The gore, the horror, the dread...sure, anyone could feel enough inspirated by Doom Eternal to the point of feeling like a force of nature that even Hell woud fear. But in my opinion, Doom 3 works on the other side of this situation, with what would probably be the most realistic scenario: death and panic. And you would be the prey.
Same with classic Doom and Doom 64. And Doom 2016. It's really only Eternal (and the upcoming Dark Ages) that pushes this fantasy stuff. It's basically just Lord of the Rings with demons at this point. Not my cup of tea. But at least the gameplay is still top notch.
That Doom 2 track was a great choice for this vid. People seem to forget that elevator music is also a part of classic Doom. Also I actually like the track.
@@timyo6288 I see you haven’t played many videogames either. Doom Eternal requires you to learn the mechanics and different weapons, and adjust your playstyle accordingly. Doom 3 is the same, you should be using the weapons for their intended use, so the shotgun is perfect at extreme close range, can insta kill almost anything in a shot or two. Failure to do this showcases arrogance and unwillingness to change your playstyle, as you want to play every FPS game the same way, which is bad.
I still love Doom 3, and is my favourite game in the Doom series, ever since I played it all those years ago. Eternal is great, but the atmosphere of 3 is second to none.
in terms of horror, doom 3 did great. but i prefer eternal's enviroments. especially urdak. id software did such a great job on making urdak feel so alien. the odd looking structures, the ambience, the maykrs, i love it.
I appreciate a lot of the more granular details, such as quick interaction with display like PREY 2017 has, the lighting, some of the art design, and ambient design.
The Quake 2 Part i can totally relate to. For some reason, shit just blends together as the hours go by and my eyes can only take so much Rust and Brown.
My ideal Doom game is somewhere between Doom 3 and Neo Doom (Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal). Doom 3 nailed the atmosphere. Neo Doom nailed the combat intensity. Now they need to somehow combine the two, and they would have the perfect Doom game.
If Doom 2016 reimagined Doom 1, and Doom Eternal reimagined Doom II, I'm hoping the next modern Doom is a reimagining of Doom 64 with that dark horror theme that it and 3 have.
On the point about Lateralus (your second pronunciation was closer, but don’t sweat it) - I showed the DOOM 3 theme to my guitar teacher, and he almost immediately went “This is from the early 2000s isn’t it.” 2 things ticked it off for him - there is a pick rake at the beginning to sound like a radio, and that is something Tool was famous for, and the Distortion and Rhythm of the Main section are very much like Lateralus. It’s so clearly inspired that it took my guitar teacher about 20 seconds to figure it out.
Doom 3 did story-telling and creepy atmosphere amazingly that I think doom 2016 and especially eternal are missing. Even though interactions were super sparse Samuel Hayden and olivia pierce are some of the most memorable parts of 2016 - there was just so little human interaction in eternal that intern guy became the crowd favorite. While Eternal does almost everything right gameplay-wise i'll always have a soft spot for doom 3's and 2016 (to some extent) more plot focused game.

I actually enjoy reading PDA entries in games like this, and navigating is fun for me too. DOOM 3 could probably do a better job at making locations more memorable though. I also enjoy the combat for whatever reason, walking up point blank with the shotgun is risky, but rewardig.
I’ve been playing Doom 3 since I was 8, it’s my first doom game and my first PC FPS, it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I can acknowledge that there are flaws with the game, that being said it will remain my top 3 games of all time
I actually enjoy Doom 3's combat way more than those other games, the combat is fast and punchy, and if you lean on the shotgun more the combat is super dynamic. I replayed it recently and loved it.
I dont think the theme song is a rip off of Lateralus. I see how it sounds similar, but speaking as a guitar player, a lot of songs in drop tunings using mainly just power chords sound similar, but I see what you mean.
Doom 3 was a spectacular game, and I would say it’s about as good as dead space. The problem is that it didn’t fit the doom formula, since the game was a horror based slow paced game compared to the action-packed fast paced feeling of other doom games. As a doom game it is not that good, but as a standalone game I think it’s amazing.
Agreed and I'd kindly ask the Dead Space/horror-genre fanboys to stop saying Doom 3 is the best Doom game. It's basically blasphemy. Have a good day guys.
I loved Doom 3 back in the day but I'm a little afraid to go back to it. I remember it looking and sounding amazing. It genuinely creeped me out and I thought the Hell levels had fantastic atmosphere. I don't remember ever feeling lost in the game. It all seemed really linear to me. Enjoyed the video. The part from Silence of the Lambs had me cracking up.
love how you picked out the lateralus inspiration they obviously took for the doom 3 theme. as someone who plays guitar, the riffs are pretty similar, focused around the same scale patterrns. and the first two power chords in the main riff are literally the same from lateralus, open D power chords. great vids btw man, love your stuff
The weapons of mars destruction mod improves on the combat greatly as guns pack much more of a punch and there's an addon allowing for infinite sprint letting you play it like a classic doom game.

Even after playing Doom 3 as a kid from my big bros Xbox all these years ago, I still come back to play it constantly. I absolutely love the atmosphere and sound design and just overall creepiness.
I love doom 3 atmosphere, lights, graphics, first part of story and early game, hell was strange, but how enemies is placed in that environment, how action feels through me away, everything become annoying very quickly

what i like the most in Doom 3 is how heavy the combat feels, like it feels like it has a lot of weight and considering it´s a survival horror it adds up a lot for the experience imo
it didn't felt that much of a survivor horror for me, since combat is very frequent and ammo is more than plentfull, in fact even without guides on veteran i never found myself without ammo on base game and only on RoE i reached that point, but even then i had 34 grenades
The last time I played this game I was 13. Scared out of my mind at every corner...now I realize it wasnt the darkness and enemies that fueled my fear. It was the confusion of not knowing where the hell to go and not being able to see😂
Honestly, I loved Doom 3 when it first launched and I still do now. I was blown away by its graphics at the time and I would get genuinely scared by it. These days I still love the atmosphere of Doom 3 and I feel its lighting engine holds up well. Sure, the combat is simple but I find it satisfying. The shotgun and machinegun are particularly fun to use in my opinion. Then there is the nostalgia I have for the game. I still remember picking up my original copy with a friend and installing and firing it up for the first time. Good times. Doom 3 VR Edition was recently released for the PSVR and yes, I had to pick one up just to try it.
This is the best DOOM 3 review I've ever seen. DOOM 3 is my favorite DOOM game, and while I understand why a lot of DOOM fans have issues with it, I hate it when people absolutely refuse to understand its mechanics and the purpose behind them, then proceed to call it "bad game design" or something. Most of all, I hate when people say that the shotgun sucks because it forces you to get up close, and yet they're trying to shoot things with it from far away. You've always been a very fair and logical RUclipsr, so I'm glad that you can understand the game. Thanks for not just turning this into a dumb meme about "DOOM 3 stupid not scary lmaoooo," even with the falling asleep bit. Again, I understand the problems people have with it, but thank you for somewhat taking it seriously. Also, you've been putting ahegao in your thumbnails recently. the shotgun didn't felt good for me, but isn't really a problem since you have a cool chaingun to use instead i didn't scared me, to be honest, i felt more tension in a Duke Nukem 3D map than in all of Doom 3
Personally, 2016's Hell is by far my favourite iteration. It felt so...ancient. I would have loved to see more versions of Hellified worlds that Hell had consumed. In a way, I also felt like the story in 2016 was one of its strongest elements as well.
Lol - I recently revisited Doom3 in between Eternal DLC's and literally fell asleep while walking around on more than one occasion. Woke up to find myself staring at a wall.
I 100% disagree with you about this game. When I first bought it in 2003 I admit I didn’t get on with it, I wanted a fast paced game with little to no text. I bought it again for my Switch a few years ago (BFG version where flashlight is attached to the gun & graphics which amazingly still hold up today) and I LOVED it! Regarding having to always look at the PDF and read absolutely everything; you don’t. Literally every audio or text entry would be important and if not, you can just skim read for a code when you see a crate instead. I got lost once, and simply looked at a RUclips walkthrough of the game to help me.
I remember I was so excited to play doom 3! This game showed that a store bought PC that was 3 years old was not good enough to run new games, and since I was 17 and made $5.15 an hour, I couldn't afford to build a new PC. Didn't get to play Doom 3 til 2009!
I also love the fact that they kept the weapons how they did. No one was expecting a demonic invasion to happen, so there shouldn't be heavy weaponry. Yes, UAC develops weapons. But the alien portal tech were kept top secret by Bertruger.
you didnt mention how they use the same imp jumpscare again and again and again. even in the ending levels, like you would be scared of an imp while having a minigun.

This is the first DOOM game I ever played. I played it on a crappy laptop at 480p and my framerate never exceeded 20, good times.

Even after playing Doom 3 as a kid from my big bros Xbox all these years ago, I still come back to play it constantly. I absolutely love the atmosphere and sound design and just overall creepiness.
I love doom 3 atmosphere, lights, graphics, first part of story and early game, hell was strange, but how enemies is placed in that environment, how action feels through me away,
everything become annoying very quickly

what i like the most in Doom 3 is how heavy the combat feels, like it feels like it has a lot of weight and considering it´s a survival horror it adds up a lot for the experience imo
it didn't felt that much of a survivor horror for me, since combat is very frequent and ammo is more than plentfull, in fact even without guides on veteran i never found myself without ammo on base game and only on RoE i reached that point, but even then i had 34 grenades
good video but that quake 1 visual mod you played with disgusts me, never trust anyone who tries to alter quake's perfect original look
Ehh, some smoother lighting and transparency effects wouldn't mind, but yeah.

The last time I played this game I was 13. Scared out of my mind at every corner...now I realize it wasnt the darkness and enemies that fueled my fear. It was the confusion of not knowing where the hell to go and not being able to see😂

Honestly, I loved Doom 3 when it first launched and I still do now. I was blown away by its graphics at the time and I would get genuinely scared by it. These days I still love the atmosphere of Doom 3 and I feel its lighting engine holds up well.
Sure, the combat is simple but I find it satisfying. The shotgun and machinegun are particularly fun to use in my opinion. Then there is the nostalgia I have for the game. I still remember picking up my original copy with a friend and installing and firing it up for the first time. Good times.
Doom 3 VR Edition was recently released for the PSVR and yes, I had to pick one up just to try it.
Gosh I love Doom. Doesn't matter if it's Doom 1, 2, 3, 64, 2016, Eternal...I love it all.

This is the best DOOM 3 review I've ever seen. DOOM 3 is my favorite DOOM game, and while I understand why a lot of DOOM fans have issues with it, I hate it when people absolutely refuse to understand its mechanics and the purpose behind them, then proceed to call it "bad game design" or something. Most of all, I hate when people say that the shotgun sucks because it forces you to get up close, and yet they're trying to shoot things with it from far away.
You've always been a very fair and logical RUclipsr, so I'm glad that you can understand the game. Thanks for not just turning this into a dumb meme about "DOOM 3 stupid not scary lmaoooo," even with the falling asleep bit. Again, I understand the problems people have with it, but thank you for somewhat taking it seriously.

the shotgun didn't felt good for me, but isn't really a problem since you have a cool chaingun to use instead
i didn't scared me, to be honest, i felt more tension in a Duke Nukem 3D map than in all of Doom 3
Personally, 2016's Hell is by far my favourite iteration. It felt so...ancient. I would have loved to see more versions of Hellified worlds that Hell had consumed.
In a way, I also felt like the story in 2016 was one of its strongest elements as well.
In terms of Hell I'd rank them;
3 > 2016 > 64 > Eternal > DOOM 1/2

Lol - I recently revisited Doom3 in between Eternal DLC's and literally fell asleep while walking around on more than one occasion. Woke up to find myself staring at a wall.

I 100% disagree with you about this game.
When I first bought it in 2003 I admit I didn’t get on with it, I wanted a fast paced game with little to no text.
I bought it again for my Switch a few years ago (BFG version where flashlight is attached to the gun & graphics which amazingly still hold up today) and I LOVED it!
Regarding having to always look at the PDF and read absolutely everything; you don’t. Literally every audio or text entry would be important and if not, you can just skim read for a code when you see a crate instead.
I got lost once, and simply looked at a RUclips walkthrough of the game to help me.
Appreciate the commitment to the bit here

I remember I was so excited to play doom 3!
This game showed that a store bought PC that was 3 years old was not good enough to run new games, and since I was 17 and made $5.15 an hour, I couldn't afford to build a new PC. Didn't get to play Doom 3 til 2009!

I also love the fact that they kept the weapons how they did. No one was expecting a demonic invasion to happen, so there shouldn't be heavy weaponry. Yes, UAC develops weapons. But the alien portal tech were kept top secret by Bertruger.

you didnt mention how they use the same imp jumpscare again and again and again. even in the ending levels, like you would be scared of an imp while having a minigun.

Doom 64 did the whole horror theme much better since it added creepy tones and gothic imagery. Also the demons got an interesting redesign. Curious about what you think of doom 64 mayo. Did you play the original or the new one with modern controls.
