Stevie Nicks’ voice is easy to pick up in the background. Lindsey Buckingham produced, played guitar and sang backup on the song as well. Egan returned the favor to Buckingham by appearing as one of the guitarists in Lindsey’s “Trouble” video.
Yep, came here specifically to mention that !!! Great minds ... Update: Let me correct my original post because I left something out or not defined fully. I KNEW it was Stevie, Lindsey and the girl in the video singing backing vocals, that Lindsey was playing the guitar (also not in the video), and that they weren't present (on to better things) for it, but I STILL can't pick their vocals out of the mix. I can kind of say, the female voices COULD include Stevie's voice, but it's not immediately identifiable like it always was in Fleetwood Mac, regardless of whether she was the lead or background vocalist.
This song is ABOUT Stevie Nicks. Egan had a huge crush on her. When she broke up with Lindsey, Egan approached her, but she wasn’t interested. She did befriend him, and sing backup on some songs, but they never dated. Lindsey produced this and played on it. It was a huge hit, but a bit of a heartbreak for Egan. Both Lindsey and Stevie sang on this.
Lots of heartbreak in the song and Walter, Stevie and Lindsay to go around. They gave us a beautiful nugget of a Yacht Rock song. Please do Sentimental Lady by Bob Welch if you like this.
Egan said they were together for about 3 weeks until she uttered the non magic words "You remind me so much of Lindsey". Doubt it would have lasted much longer regardless but 🤣
Stevie Nicks is in this video. She’s one of the girls dancing, and sings background. Her and Walter were romantically involved for a period. This song and video was a throwback to 50s memories/nostalgia
@@bkm2797He was quite the babe magnet during the 70s believe it or not. Tall, blue eyed; bad-boy with a guitar. He wasn’t creepy or he wouldn’t have gotten so many chicks
Great song. Check out "Sentimental Lady" by Bob Welch, who was a former Fleetwood Mac member. Christine and Lindsay help out on that one. He originally recorded the song while he was with FM, so there are two rather different versions. His other big hit was "Ebony Eyes."
Walter Egan wrote this song for Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac because he had a crush on her. Both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham sing on background vocals. Lindsey helped produce the album too.
This was a big hit which was released in March of 1978 it was a popular song at the roller skating rinks. I was fortunate enough to be a teenager in the 70s. I was 16 years old in 1978. I also was fortunate to grow up in Muscle Shoals. Alabama. Which from 1965 till 1980 was known as the recording capital of the world. I might be a little biased but I think the 70s was one of the greatest decades of music ever it was so diverse. Y'all need to check out the documentary called Muscle Shoals. With the passion that you to show for music it's a must documentary that you must watch.
HEY guys this song was used in the movie Boogie Nights Walter Egan was a singer songwriter who had written some songs that did not get any traction but that all changed when he met Stevie Nicks and developed strong feelings for her these feelings inspired Walter to write Magnet and Steel it became a huge hit certified gold reached number 8 on Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1978 that inspiration helped him write a song called Hot summer nights later recorded by the Australian group Night it became a top 20 hit song in 1979 Jay Amber Andy Gibb had had another hit song in 1978 it's called An Everlasting love (with Bee Gees backup vocals) can't go wrong with any Bee Gees song keep up the great work guys.
About 15 years ago i saw Walter Egan and his band play at the Buganut Pig in Franklin Tn. Great show! They played a cover of Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well too!
I was 15 when this song came out. I had the 45 (for you youngsters that’s vinyl with only one song on each side). I can’t believe I just now realized that was Stevie Nicks singing backup.🙄
Got to say it….. you guys started reacting to songs most people don’t know over the last month or so. The joy of reaction videos is watching you react to our favorite songs. It’s like we’re hearing them new all over again. These lesser known songs are killing the good roll you were on. NOTE: Not saying these songs aren’t good, just that most of us are hearing them for the 1st time with you. That goes against the reason we watch reaction videos.
For another song Stevie does backing vocals on, do John Stewart "Gold"! Great song! Bob Welsh's "Ebony Eyes" is even better with sonme great concert video footage.
I remember years after his hit, Egan was on Jeopardy and during the introduction he said he had a hit in the 70's with this and Alex was like, that's nice, it was like no one ever heard of it. I knew him immediately having grown up in the 70's and, spoiler alert, he didn't do very well on the show, but I will never forget this sweet, beautiful song.
Still listen this classic. "Cause you are a magnet and I am Steel."wavey tree moving in the gentle breeze feeling . Great song close your eyes and sway in the breeze.
I was in 8th grade when this song came out. It seemed like it was on the radio all the time….because it was a hugely popular song. The 13 year old me loved it then, and the 59 year old me still loves this song. ❤️☮️
I still have my 45 of this. I often wonder if it would have been as big if Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham weren’t featured on backing vocals. I still love the song.
One of my ultimate favs, my man of 20 yrs had silver bands made with a piece of magnet in mine and a piece of steel in his so when we held hands they would stick. It was a song we heard on our first date. Sadly when I became chronically ill I lost my man, but still have the ring. Thanx so much, takr care, stay groovy, Peace
OMG I've been waiting for you to get to this forever. Walter wrote the song about the huge crush he had on Stevie Nicks. Stevie and Lindsey Buckingham on backing vocals and Lindsey produced the album.
What a beautiful song and what great memories are stirred by it! In the Summer of 1978, I was seeing a young man who I was incredibly attracted to and this song resonated with me so much. I was attracted to him like a magnet is to steel. But I was seventeen and naive. He broke my heart into a million pieces. This song always brings back memories of that guy I thought I would never be able to live without. "With you I'm not shy to show the way I feel. With you I might try my secrets to reveal. For you are a magnet and I am steel."
Wow, I had forgotten about the existence of this song! I don't think I've heard it since 1978-why doesn't radio play this on any golden oldies channels? This was a nice trip down memory lane.
one of my most favourite collabs with stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham! you can hear them singing backup and harmonies. i think lindsey also co-produced and/or arranged this too ❤ also: walter had a HUGE crush on stevie which inspired this song.
You haven't done Olivia Newton-John in quite a while now, she has a lot of great songs that you haven't played yet, one of them is "Twist of fate" from her second movie with John Travolta "Two of a kind" back in 1983.
Hey, guys, what really makes this song click for me Is the drums. Rock drums are a 4 count. And the snare is hit on the 2 and the 4 which are considered the backbeat. In this song, the snare is hit on the 4 twice. Which is very clever and unique.
Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac on background vocals. Love this one ❤
Thanks for this info. I never knew that!
😮 Didn't know that either! Thanks.
I never knew that either and I loved this song as well as Fleetwood Mac! I can hear it now. Thanks for the enlightenment info!

JOHN STEWART ft. Stevie Nicks - Gold (1979) HD👍👍👍
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! a perfect song!
I remember when this song came out. I had this major crush on this guy. I will never forget at the skating rink and he asked me to skate. 😱😱😱💕💕
Stevie Nicks is so prominent on the vocals that this should be a duet.
Hanging out back then when this song came on was great for eye contact and and slow dancing.
Walter went on to be a substitute teacher and his students thought it was cool that their teacher, Mr. Egan, was THAT Walter Egan.
Skating ring with light out & disco ball on with my girlfriend them were good old days 😊
This song is about Walter Egans relationship with Stevie Nicks, she is singing background vocals on the record.
Wow, never knew that.
Apparently unrequited love by Walter (who could blame him for having a crush on Stevie Nicks?!)

I think I've mentioned it, too. Sentimental Lady makes me smile.
Yes, I requested both recently. I would also recommend John Stewart, Gold, featuring Stevie Nicks.
