This is awesome. I have worn AFO'S my entire life. I have had both hinged ones like that and sold backed ones. Although I've never had two upper straps always just the one at the very top. That is a really cool and unique design I like it. and I came to the same conclusion as you with the skater shoes, I love tearing the soles out when I first get them. I don't know if you mind tieing your shoes or not but I recently found these elastic laces called Ulaces and they are awesome and save a ton of time because instead of having to pull all the laces up to make room the ulace stretches as you slide your afo in and then stay tight automatically all day it eliminates the tieing and untieing process. Iam excited because I just got fitted for a new pair of afo's last week I hope to get my new ones soon. I have never met anyone else that wears them but I love showing mine off I am proud to wear them. You are awesome for making this video to show everyone just because we wear afo's we're just like everyone else we put our shoes on one foot at a time.
Love your video. This is very helpful as we have the exact same AFO and always looking for comfort tips. Can you post info on the shoes that you altered and the foam insert? Was it custom made or an alteration of something off the shell. Thank you so much!
I have EDS, i get my AFOs tomorrow! I can’t wait! Edit: 3-week update! They’ve really helped with my pain, and paired with the other braces i have, I can almost walk without crutches!! Sadly I don’t have any shoes that properly fit my AFOs, but soon I get custom-fit ones!
Check out some airwalks, etnies, vans, skater shoes can be stretched easier to fit. I do have a video about stretching out those shoes. Thats awesome they are helping with pain.
I have eds hypermobility type 3, POTS, tethered cord, chairi malformation, scoliosis, high functioning autism, ptsd, sensory processing disorder, dyslexia, chronic pain and fatigue, depression, anxiety, etc. I'm a zebra warrior! and love the video you made!! I also have afos, and kafos Now due to a server dislocation in my lower back causing paraplegic issues resulting into kafos to help me stand and walk.
I didn’t know Hypermobilitu had numbers, minus the (for now) tethered cord, chairi malformation, and scoliosis, I have the same thing 🙂. I luckily can walk, though I am in constant oain
I was just prescribed an AFO, and will be going to the orthotic & prosthetic company soon to have my custom one made! Thanks for this video - it answered a few questions I had!
Hey Jozee! I just found your RUclips videos. I love how you break EVERYTHING down step by step whether you're showing us your braces (AFO's) or explaining about pain or any other thing. To you it's an everyday thing but to us it helps us understand everything better ☺
Very interesting! Wishing you the best with your condition, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome seems extremely difficult to manage and deal with. You're amazing for powering through each day.
Great video! I'm a Physical Therapy student and we are discussing orthotics at the moment. Are theses considered articulated AFOs? I noticed when you were ambulating you didn't have any problem with dorsi flexion (flexing toes upward) and plantar flexion (pushing your toes downward). Do these orthotics allow you to push off the ground when you are ambulating?
Great! What is the main reason for wearing the orthotics? Is it to help with side to side stabilization? Or is it more to prevent the hyper extension of your knee?
Due to ehlers danlos syndrome my ankles are very unstable. I used to sublux my ankles, dislocate tendons in my feet and ankles, break bones in my feet. These AFOs help keep my knees from hyper extending as well as keeping my legs in place.
Hello Josie, could you please tell me why do you have two straps on Tops of your feet and the one diagonal strap across your shin? I have AFO’s that literally have two straps. One strap is across the front of my ankle and the other strap is at the very top of my shin. I wanted to get more straps because I thought it would reduce my foot from slipping inside the AFO. Could you please give me your feedback?? Thank you! Eddie
After I wear a plastic ones , I decided to get the metal ones , the traditional attached in the shoes, are more comfortable, less painful and so much fresh. By the way i am suffering fibromyalgia , afos give me more stabilization and less pain to walk. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing these helpful videos, Jozee. These informational videos are immensely helpful for other people who are new to using custom braces. +Tamarack Habilitation Technologies im glad the videos are helping people, alot of the videos have come as requests from other people that wear custom braces or were told they need to. They are working out very well for me! Have a great day!
Thank you for posting this video, I am a physical therapy student studying CP and I have a case study about a boy who is in HS and is having trouble walking but does not want to wear his AFOs. It was nice to see what AFOs look like on a typical younger person who knows how to style them or even hide them.
I got AFO's like your recently, I got blisters on the back of my heels. Did that happen to you? If so, did you need to have your AFO's adjusted or just get bigger shoes? Thanks..
I used to. Bring it up to the orthosis place. I ended up getting them often, i got mine switched to boots on the insides. If you have the boots and getting blisters it might need a strap or an adjustment.
Do these really keep your feet from hurting if you walk long distances? I’m getting ready to get an AFO. My shoe inserts aren’t working at all for my severe pronation and I feel like it’s going to take a miracle for my feet to stop killing me. Thanks great video!
They do for me. I had to get alot of padding, straps aand all.. i get them maintenced every 6ish months to keep up on it all. Hopedully it helps you a bit
I have a foot drop issue and I have to wear afos too... I like to dress up but I'm conscious about the afos being visible in short dresses... what do you do when you want to wear frocks skirts and such? A dress up with afos please...
Thanks i just had a new ago made for my left foot but so hard to find shoes that fit with it. Can u send me the brand u buy and where. Appreciate any and all help you can provide. Thank u. Karen genoff
Hey, i always look out for men skater shoes. Right now I still use the brand Airwalk. But there many skater brands. I also have a video on how to stretch out shoes so when you buy any that are to tight, you can loosen them.

I have, POTS, EDS, gastroparesis, MCAD, syncable migranes, PTSD, sensory issues, brain damage and a lot of other crap. My afo braces also have the foam piece built into them though? I’ve never seen them with the foam piece separate
Yes i did have a different set like that. This type of foam is what my orthotics guy suggested because I 'll get bad painful pressure points and sometimes my skin would start to break open. I didnt know this type of foam was a thing until he told me.
Thank you for the video I have 2 Solid AFO braces but have a hard time finding shoes big enough to fit i like vans and stuff but its too narrow :/ you design of the AFO is really cool too, I have pink brace and white straps.
I have drop foot in both feed and weak ankles. Right now my stability and walking is not good and my balance is not the greatest either. I'm getting afo s tomorrow actually so I'm really hoping they help. What was your walking and standing like before you got yours?
I wear an AFO, the old style attached to the shoe, the plastic brace just didn't work for me. It doesn't bother me when I wear an outfit and people can see the brace.
Thank you for sharing just stumbled on your video after getting new afo braces. Please whats the name of the black foam padding boot you put on first. I need just that to help with pressure spots. Hope you see this and I get a response. Thanks.
Those are foam boots. There may be a specific name but i always nlknew them as foam boots. If you ask the place you got your leg braces from they can help with getting those.
I have a 4 year old that I think will need to use them. But I am just afraid because it’s a big adjustment. I’m concerned have u been bullied because of it? Have u has it all ur life? Why do u use it? I think my son could have a very mild cp. he is also visually impaired.
I havent had these all my life and i use them becuase i have EDS(ehlers danlos syndrome). I got them as an adult. As an adult ive gotten comments but only from other adults. but i always say adults typically have more judgments towards adults. Kids tend to just ask and move on. Once a kid hears "my legs works different and they help me walk" they usually move on.
I have a question, when I ware my afo(they look just like yours) I get this burning, it's very painful, sinsation at the ball of my foot when I ware it for to long. do you get that feeling? and if so what do you do about it besides from taking them off.
+RissaRae yes. I know what your talking about. So painful. One of the reason I have a white pad(got them from my foot doctor) in the one brace near my toes is becuase i figured out a pressure point on the side of my foot. The pain is usually caused by inflammation in the metatarsals area. The pads have helped a bit
oh ok, thank you so much for the information. I'll be making an appointment to see my foot doctor soon so I can see if that's what I need to have added onto my brace.
Do they not hurt your foot & ankles? After wearing them for a long time? I have a NeoG Reflex AFO for my right ankle, which hurts after so many hours. 😟
I love the socks! :) My knee hyper-extends too but I've never been in braces before. I looked for your FB but couldn't find it. I'd love to be friends if you'd like.

Did you have to special order them??!! I really want a pair like that! The regular ones are sooo depressing. Any information would excite me greatly! LOL Cheers! Sincerely, Addie
Thanks for watching! I went through my foot doctor who sent me to a orthotic and prosthetic place to get them molded and made. I was able to pick out the design i wanted on it. I hope you can get something to help with it all.
I just got my very first molded afo like yours.. however the foam inserts would help greatly.. did you get them where you got your braces? Is it something i could order online?
+Stacey Myers Hi, I actually got them from my orthotic and prosthetic place that did the molds. If you contact them before they really start on the molds and cuts of plastic, I'm sure they can create them to have the foam inserts instead. These work alot better because they do go around my foot and ankle.
Where did you get your cushion pads from for your pressure spots?I've been trying to break my braces in for about a week but my right brace really agitate my ankle bone after standing in it for a certain amount of hrs
