The Case Against the Mormon Doctrine of "Spirit Children"

  • Christians don’t believe that we’re all children of God. Mormonism teaches that were were all born as spirit-children to Heavenly Father in the pre-mortal life, and that every human is a "child of God." Yet Christians reject this teaching because the Bible teaches that the only way for us to be a child of God is via adoption.
The LDS doctrine of "spirit children" really matters, because it's the logical basis of future exaltation. If we're God's spirit children, then we may progress and be like Him. On the other hand, if we're simply God's creation that He's adopted-we can expect no such exaltation.
In this video, we explain where the Bible teaches these truths, how Scripture says we can “become children of God,” and why this profound difference between Mormons and Christians matters so much. The LDS Church's teaching that we're all spirit children of God stands contrary to the Word of God. The Bible teaches that only those who are adopted by faith are genuinely children of God.
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

**NOTE: We have the wrong reference at **4:37** - the video says that verse is from Galatians 3:36, when it's actually from Galatians 3:26.**

This is so good! We are God's adopted children when we are born again! Praise God that I can now call him Father but not everyone can. The book of John is where I clearly see this. Thank you for a great video.

I always enjoy your informative, God glorifying videos. Thank you for your vitally important ministry. Wanted to point out that one of the images misquoted Galatians 3:36 (at 4:35). I only mention it because I was trying to find it in the Bible as it’s such an important verse on this topic. God bless y’all and your wonderful ministry ✝️🙏❤️

This was really helpful. I never considered how the Mormons' belief that we are all children of God would affect their view of hell and of exaltation, too.

As a latter-day Saint, we know we are children of God through modern revelation. We don't base this belief on those two verses. We know it from the Holy Ghost who testifies of the truth. I love this teaching and knowing that God loves me and knows me specifically. His ultimate glory is for His children to choose Him through Christ. Thus being able to see us again. Pray to God and ask Him if you are His child. The holy ghost will testify this truth to you.

Would you then say that the previous revelation that God gave to Paul was wrong? How do you explain the disparity between the numerous verses that say we are adopted into God’s family and what the LDS Church teaches?

A member of the quorum of the 12 Dale Renlund said in the October 2022 general conference "When we ask for revelation about something for which God has already given clear direction, we open ourselves up to misinterpreting our feelings and hearing what we want to hear." I agree with what Renlund says here, but I ask why this would not apply to this topic? I know he would disagree with what is said in this video. But if we honestly deal with the information given in this video, then I believe it is clear that "God had already given clear direction" on who are God's children through adoption. So the idea that modern revelation has changed what God has already told us is to "open ourselves up to misinterpreting our feelings and hearing what we want to hear." Don't be decived by wolves in sheep's clothing telling you sweet "truths" about God that please you, but ultimately lead you to damnation. Turn from false prophets and cling to the only source of knowledge, God's word. It is my desire and the desire of God Loves Mormons to show you how to be reconciled to the only true God. Please read John's gospel like a child putting all you have been taught and let God teach you who he is, then you will see that you have been lied to by modern "prophets."

Even the covenant people were not the children of God. Romans 9:7-8, "Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed." Now cross reference this with John 1:12 and the word "become" as used by the speaker in this video.

We are the offspring of God 😅
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

There are different levels and meanings of being child of God. All are used in the scriptures both Old and New Testament. People baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are children of God on each level, being baptized to serve God and take upon them the Holy Spirit by the authority of the priesthood, an authority required and given in the New Testament. An authority which many who call themselves Christians do not honor or have a claim to. To be born again you are born of the Father. Jesus Christ is the perfect heir of God, the Son of God, Trinitarian theology which has the origin of man-made creeds does not honor the culture meaning of "Beloved Son" on any level in it's interpretation while at the baptism of Christ the voice of the Father declared that "this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear him." The authority of you declarations has no establishment with scriptural standards the only alternative we have left is you are finding fault in others claims to witnessed inspiration from your own mortal heart.

It would be helpful if you cited the specific scriptures that show each level. What do you believe about adoption? Why doesn't Trinitarian theology honor "beloved Son"?

Yes! We are all Gods children. (DC 76:24)Our evangelical brothers point to New Testament scriptures that say we become the children of God to make the point that we aren't inherently Gods Children. But they mistake poetry for doctrine! We are inherently Gods Children (Luke 3:38,Acts 17:28,etc.) But after the Gentiles were accepted into the Covanant, it became necessary to "become" a child of God through adoption into Abrahams family(Romans 9:8) Paul said "not all who are descended from Israel are Israel", in the same way, not all Natural born Children of God are the Covanant Children of God.

This guy does not understand the Bible.Even the Talmud mentions the spirit children of God.So does the Dead Sea Scrolls and John 3:13 this guy is ignorant.

    • @1689-Cigars
      @1689-Cigars Год назад +4

You say he doesn't know the Bible, but yet you sight the Talmud writings from people who rejected christ (it was written in the 4th and 5th century so they knew about him and still reject him as messiah), the dead sea scrolls (I assume your referring to a book that's not in the Bible or you would have given the Biblical book not just the general dead sea scrolls), and John 3:13 which says "No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man." a verses about Jesus being the only one who descended from heaven and nothing to do with spirit children. So you accuse someone of not knowing the Bible and sight 2 nonbiblical books and a Bible verse that had nothing to do with this topic to prove he doesn't know what he's talking about. You give no meaningful refutation of clear citations of scripture that prove his point. Have you ever considered that maybe it's you who might not understand scripture?

      Hi!
Just to clarify -- this actually isn't a Calvinism thing...the idea of "adoption" is a general Christian belief. Both Calvinists & Arminians hold that we need to be "adopted" to become children of God.

What a bunch of nonsense. Acts 17:29 specifically refers to everyone as the offspring of God. More heretical teaching outside the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Born agains gonna born again.
