V.R. stands for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria)... In one of the Conan Doyle stories when describing Holmes rooms at 221b Baker Street he explains that Holmes has written V.R. in the wall in BULLET MARKS (possibly while practicing marksmanship with Watson's service revolver?) Can't imagine Mrs. Hudson was too pleased. Points deducted for not knowing that trivia!
Your enthusiasm is beyond adorable lol when you said "I didn't even notice this!!" It literally made me smile... I just ordered the B&N Leather Bound Classic of The Entire Sherlock Holmes Collection in one volume last night, it will be here tm and I can't wait... Over 1100 pages containing all 4 novels and 56 short stories in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series... I'm now addicted to these leather bound classics, I have the Canterbury Classic Leather Bound Encyclopedia of Tolkien and my list keeps growing.. Gorgeous books

There is no better Sherlock Holmes portrayal than Jeremy Brett. Everyone is like Benedict Cumberbatch is the best not for me my favourite by far is Jeremy Brett. But Mr Cumberbatch is still a fantastic actor oh and the VR on the last book is what Holmes shoots into the wall. Meaning Victoria Regina which is Latin the English translation is Queen Victoria.

I think you're right that A Scandal in Bohemia is the first story in the bind ups, but A Study in Scarlet is the first story, but is obviously a novel and therefore depends whether you consider that a 'story' hahaa! Great collection, they're beautiful stories and beautiful books!

Bridget, I was being Mr Grumpy, you have some nice books. Keep collecting and enjoying. And yes, A Scandal In Bohemia was Doyle' s first Holmes short story. To buy the first appearance of Holmes in print, if you could find one, you'd have to pay $300,000 or more!

Every time I go to London I go in Speedy's, the cafe below Sherlock's home and order the same thing: ham omelette and chips! I'll be there again the month after next. My favourite Sherlock collection is a facsimile of the Strand magazine's original pages.All the best from England!

What you did not realised that the second last book you showed is nie of THE first editions of the Adventure of Sherlock Homes..... Do you even realised what treasure you are holding there? That's emotional value of it self and the price value is unbelievable... and you did not even realised

So late seeing this but I loved this video! I have the Heirloom set too and I was so happy that I was able to find it before it got so expensive since it is out of print now (I also really want the Jane Austen Heirloom set but that's going for like $200 now :(). The only one of the Sherlock Holmes stories I've read so far though is my puffin classic of Hound of the Baskervilles when I was little but I loved it so much! Now that I have the Heirloom books though and the audio books narrated by Simon Vance (if you like audio books I highly recommend checking him out, he is a great narrator, especially of classics) I want to start reading the books and stories in order later this year 😀. Not to be a bad influence on your collecting or anything but have you seen the Penguin English Library editions? The Book Depository website sells them and the whole collection of those classics are slowly going out of print so at the moment they are all like 50% off so only like $5 or $6 each and the covers are so pretty! They have the four novels and 3 collections of the short stories in these editions. Also did you ever watch Wishbone when you were little? it is a kids show about classics and there are episode adaptations for Hound of the Baskervilles and Scandal in Bohemia (I think). Also do you watch Elementary? I love Sherlock but I like Elementary more, they are both really good though😀 Lastly, is the 1892 copy a first edition? Either way that is awesome and for the copy with VR the only thing I can think it might stand for is Victoria Regina because Victoria was queen when the first Sherlock Holmes stories and novels were coming out but it seems odd that that would be printed on a copy from the 50s. Sorry for the rambly comment but this was such a cool video!
How much did you pay for the heirloom edition book set?

I think I managed to find it at such a good price because it was either still in print or it had only just gone out of print so it was easier to find (I got it for Christmas 4 or 5 years ago). After your question, I googled it out of curiosity and unfortunately now, it's gone up quite a bit, I could only find it 2 places, ebay had a set for $155 and then someone on Amazon was selling it for $370! That's outrageous in my opinion.
VR are the Queen's initials that Sherlock Holmes shot into his wall when he was bored. That's the inspiration for BBC Sherlock spraying the smiley face on his wall :)

Re: the last book you showed. I think 'VR' could mean 'Victoria Regina' ie the time where most of the Holmes stories are set, the Victorian era (Victoria Regina = Queen Victoria).
By the way, do you collect Sherlock Holmes parodies as well? I can recomment Donald Thomas and June Thomson, also Denis O. Smith.

How about the really big 'Midpoint Press' gold leaf editions? Thats the one I have. Every story in order, with original illustrations. For some reason, they come in different colours. I have the reddish brown edition, but they also come in both blue and green editions. Otherwise, exactly the same I believe.
Also, the 'New Annotated Sherlock Holmes', 3 volume sets. I am really tempted by these. I believe they are considered to be the best collections of Sherlock Holmes ever.

I hope you see this. The 1882 Adventures if Sherlock Holmes may be a first US edition . That book was originally published in 1892. You should price it if you still have it. You should see how valuable it is

Hi you need to collect the Tossers of Dr Watson.. if you can find them. Its all the stories in a file with all letters and Clues, photos and much more. They sometimes come up for sale on Ebay. It will open up another World to you.

I too have an enormous collection of Sherlock Holmes books in hardback, soft back, comic book, book sets, etc. A few I got signed by Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. My treasured possessions! Also I too love blue, that's my the favourite colour of all time. Just to let u know VR was the queen Victoria Regina. Holmes fired shots into the wall to make VR in one of the stories because he was bored! Loved ur video and keep up with the collection.

Btw, I am taking a video of my humble Sherlock Holmes collection in a week, you should check it out. I grew up in a Sherlock Holmes family, where most of the books have been passed on from my Dad. Recently I just got one of my favorite stories, the Easton Press Deluxe edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles - which is gorgeous. You should check out the Folio Society and Easton Press if you want to collect beautiful leatherbound Holmes books! Ps. A Scandal in Bohemia is also one of my all-time favorites! Beautiful collection, thank you for sharing

I think when you said "ribbed", you meant "deckle edged".

It's called an endpaper, not inside cover. Jagged edges are called deckled, not ribbed. They're gilded gold not trimmed gold. Better educate yourself on basic parts of a book and bookbinding if you're to be a proper bibliophile.

Ammar Ali she did read them. She read the stories. She just has them in different editions. You can buy something because it looks nice. People buy books for decor in their homes. Things don’t need to be used for their “intended purpose”. U can buy whatever u want for whatever reasons.
