Hey Jessica! Thank you for opening up about your stomach issues and anxiety! I really struggle with anxiety too and since completing my research masters I've noticed as i continue with education it seems to get worse. But I want to do a PhD. I feel like mental health and post grad studies isn't spoken about enough. Especially surviving a PhD and then entering the world of work. I feel like everyone i spoke to in labs had some sort of mental health condition or an unhealthy coping mechanism. I was wondering how did you stay sane during your PhD? Do you feel you had support just as you would a physical condition (although mental health can certainly cause physical symptoms)? How would you go about talking to your supervisor about your mental health?
Hi! I definitely agree that mental health and academia/research isn’t spoken about enough. During my PhD I made a conscious effort to make sure I had a good work/life balance. I wouldn’t work in the evenings or at weekends so my PhD wouldn’t end up consuming me and being my whole life. Luckily my supervisor was supportive of this, unlike some. I made sure to exercise and eat well and to prioritise me in amongst getting my work done. That perhaps changed a bit near the end as I was rushing to get my thesis submitted before starting my new job. I think it’s important to not let your PhD because your whole life and to have some form of identity outside of your PhD. I didn’t have to have any chats with my supervisor because apart from getting burnt out time to time, I actually felt okay during my PhD. I think it’s just now that I’m beginning to suffer for it all as I’ve been non stop since handing in my thesis as I haven’t taken a proper break. I do know that some universities have a counselling service so perhaps so if your one does too? And remember it is also okay to take time off to focus on yourself if you need to. My friend for example is currently taking three months off, paid, to focus on her MH.
I hope you are doing better Jessica xxxx Maybe it was a mixture of stress which caused your stomach pain. By the way i have also stopped drinking coffee for a while since i would get nauseous as well ....I loved your video as always and can't wait to see you here on youtube soon! Have a nice and peaceful weekend xxxx Sabbel...;P
Feeling better now - thank you 🫶🏻 I was also thinking it could be related to stress… being caffeine free is definitely helping! Hope you have a lovely weekend too 🥰
@@drjessicagomezb I am happy to hear that:)!!!Yeah, stress can be an invisible monster/angel at the same time ( since it forces us at some point to do a break and prioritize our health). Cool, that being caffeine free is also helping! Thank you xxx!!!
