      @@AndrewGoodCamera Roger Cicala of lensrentals has a great series of articles about field curvature on DPR. A similar effect (unexpected background sharpness) can also occur due to mechanical vignetting, which forces light rays at the edge of the frame through a smaller effective aperture, causing larger dof. This is commonly discussed by people adapting vintage 35mm lenses to GFX and might happen for some of these Chinese manual lenses. Should be easy to test which of these two effects is the culprit by photographing a lawn as described by Roger. 😆

    My use case must be totally different. Never ever noticed this focus-in-the-back issue, no doubt because I compose differently than you do. I've had this lens for a few months and it's completely replaced my Fuji 23mm f2 (clinical, contrasty, boring, world's-worst manual focus) and the vintage Oly 24mm f2.8 I'd been using regularly before I got this. I find the look is about identical to the Oly, as if they copied their optics; but of course this is a 1.4, not a 2.8, there's no old-lens things optical hazy things going on, and it's virtually (but not actually) de-clicked and is totally silent, making it awesome for my video work, and doesn't require an adapter, always a nice bonus. I think some people who would have loved this lens will miss out on something good because of this video. OTOH they might look at the great photos in your video and go, "Huh. Doesn't look that bad."

    i bought this lens earlier this year. its great and sharp, but heavy. even heavier than the viltrox 23mm f1.4 (my friend bought 1 recently and we compare)
    i would say, if you wana save some budget, don't mind abit of weight, this lens is the best alternative for smaller bodies like xt30, xe4 for street shots
    the sharpness and colors are great.
    the size is decently small. i pair it on my xt2 and it feels ok. (maybe better for most of you out there)
    overall i would recommend people who didn't want to break their bank and don't mind MF, this lens is great and that F1.4 is very good for low light.

    I have a couple of friends that use the MFT version of this lens and consider it a good value. Since it appears from your photos that the field curvature problem is worse along the edges of your APS-C camera, that would make "a little" sense. Although I like inexpensive lenses for fun, this one isn't of interest to me. Thanks for the review.

    I bought this lens (Sony E mount) recently because I wanted a back to basics experience. I learned photography on film cameras years before the digital came out but today digital is a better medium both in terms of image quality and convenience. But I am sick and tired of the clinically corrected modern lenses. My first option was (and still remains) the recently updated Meyer Trioplan 35mm f2.8 for the colors and the classic rendering but I wanted a (cheap) trial period using vintage glass on my mirrorless and the TTArtisan is an exceptional choice! I didn’t expect such a build quality nor that very soulful rendering. It’s better than my old Zeiss Planar T 1.4/50 wide open (I loved that lens when I had it on my old Canon DSLR) and the field Curvature is not much of a problem for me because I am using it artistically. Don’t forget that most of the old lenses had that issue, even those from Voigtländer, or Minolta, even my Planar had it on wider apertures, a lens that costs 6 times more than TTArtisan.
    One more thing: manual primes on that focal length, APSC native, are quite scarce, especially for Sony cameras. The most 24mm are for Full frame and even those for apsc costs much more (like the Argus 25/0.95 or Meike 25/0.95, or Mitakon 25/0.95. For the price, this lens is a gem, though it isn’t for everyone! If your goal is clinical sharpness look elsewhere. Here you will find character and lots of bokeh 😀

    • @forneverarrow
      @forneverarrow Год назад

      I am not shooting video at all, but i noticed minimal focus breathing during focusing. For the price it should do the job i suppose, but don't expect cinema lens performance here. Especially the aperture isn't that fast for an f/1.4 (it equals an f/1.8 from Sony or Fuji or about a T.2 cinema lens).@@kuramafox1290

  • @matthewbuick373

    I have to agree that I regret buying the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4, as pretty as it looks!! While to bokeh is very smooth once stopped down to around f/2.8, and the sunstars are gorgeous, the need to stop down to f/8 to eliminate field curvature is a significant problem for me. I find it best to treat the lens as a single aperture optic at f/8 unless bokeh is desired, which is problematic for interior shots or scenarios with poor light. At this price range the KamLan 21mm appears to be a better option!

    What I don't like is the distortion - to lazy for corrections
    The design reminds me of the most popular East German glass, the Praktika f2.8 50mm. The Zeiss Jena with the same specs was all aluminum, no paint, very beautiful. Obviously always a premium product for a smaller market. No the Zeiss should be around 30 USD, the Praktika certainly not more than 18
