"How dare they treat us like this! We've been loyal for decades and they betray us like this!" - A guy whose one move is sending his allies to their preventable deaths every single time.
It depends on how willing they would be to take on that assignment themselves if paired with a larger, stronger, and arguably less expendable legion. Maybe that was their duty while under Horus. "Okay, squad one, commence Operation Shark Bait. Squad Two, stand by to initiate Operation Dynamite Fishing on my mark." And this is why they call their allies "chums".
I was literally sitting down to paint my first Ashen Claw when this popped up. The whole “Space Marines but divorced from 10,000 years of Imperial dogma” (and 25 years of lore development) gives them a real Rogue Trader era vibe.

@TheShadowChesireCat I mean, it worked while facing the Tyranids oddly enough, the chapter master of the Ashen Claws was like...I came for the gauntlets they are mine for saving your fleet ! and Tyberos said...yeah you want them? Let's fight baby, and they guy went...yeah no thanks, I like living.
There’s something inherently funny about space marine commander Jim McWarcrimes calling Corvus “lead a slave rebellion fresh out the gestation pod” Corax a tyrant
That’s must’ve been a fun irony for the same marines who couldn’t give 2 shits about their human chaff to then be tossed out and treated as chaff themselves by their Primarch.
Except Horus had been using them as stealthy chaff long before they met Corax. Corax also tried to work with them, protested Horus' plan and Perturabo's accusation (before Russ stepped in) so he wouldn't have to meaninglessly sacrifice the sons he didn't even like. Oh, and the Xeric Raven Guard basically volunteered for that frontal attack.
look into the terrans that remained with the raven guard after gate 42, the "pale nomads" aka the majority of the deliverer terminator elite. there is a great official exemplary battle short story called "breaking of the perfect fortress". Ian didnt cover this in his carcharadon vid at all unfortunately. it makes the difference between the ashen claw and the pale nomads very clear... and the connection between the sharks and the rg much more apparent
Oh I love these guys. The pirates that just don’t care. They got no love for the Imperium or Chaos. They’re in it for themselves and only themselves. And they just look cool. That super dark grey with red just works.
19:27 where did these pictures come from on this time of the video ian please ? Black library books, astartes ? I love old 40k lore. I find it very interesting information like this.
It was interesting to hear that the Ashen Claws took gene-seed from the VIII Legion. I like to imagine how those new astartes behaved compared to their XIX Legion cousins.
Could be a nature vs nurture mentality with that as the Carcharadons are known to use both 8th and 12th legions gene seed with only slightly heightened aggression once in combat but I don’t think they’re particularly cowardly or cruel, just ruthless and pragmatic
Great video as always. I wish GW would've used the great rift as an excuse to have viable renegade/neutral factions become more prominent in the lore but seems not. I guess selling space marines is just easier
@@jaki1584 ^This. I imagine, when Corax finally returns as a huge Warp Raven, he might just extend a claw of "forgiveness" to his erstwhile sons. If only because the situation in the galaxy has become so bad, the Imperium can't afford to turn any allies away. Nor could the Ashen Claws readily refuse a chance to arrest their slow, sad decline into irrelevance.
That's rather similar to what I am doing with some marines. I'm making a little army of pirate lords using all sorts of old marine minis and color schemes. I'm also going to use the Armageddon codex militia rules to have a unit of human pirates as a troops choice.
I like how they straight up drew a legionary with exile marks, the lightning and skull logo, and an axe in the 6th HH book and people still see Carcharodons and go "definitely Night Lords"
Hey I’m curious as to why there a 40K Ultimate Guide by Gav Thorpe and Guy Haley, that’s been out since October and not one Lore or Paint RUclipsr has covered it?
i think its also important to consider taking nightlords geneseed as an insult and to destroy any efforts for the nightlords to rebuild. There is a reason pure rg geneseed is very important to them.
Uh, I hate to be That Guy, but at 21:19, I think/know you meant to say M Thirty-One instead of M Forty-One. There's a bit of a slight difference in the numbering there.| Thanks for putting this all together. It was a bit tough reading the red text on black background of how this chapter was presented in the old HH black book.
Ashen Claws are great. But man getting snubbed by the Charadons in their most recent novels a few years back was comical LOL. "So.. those relic CLAWS"?? **Laughs in **-Loyalist Night Lords-** er **-Exiled Raven Guard-** LOL, Nah Bro** (Ok my head canon? I appreciate these guys’ persistent hatred of the Night Lords.
It’s nice to see them be the victims of brutal piratical raids for a change.
We need more renegades. Whether they be human, astartes, abhuman,...
I’m currently homebrewing on a one
@@LeonGriffiths-fz9wx I'm trying out one with the Fallen and Guard.
@TSInfiMa-r6z Nice 👌
I’m telling the inquisition.
Supposed to be a few great companies of space wolves that have gone rogue over the years. They just founded a new great company each time.🤫

Night Lords: "We are the edgiest bastards in the universe. No other bastards are as edgy as us."
Ashen Claws: "And we took that personally."
(They took everything personally.)
Ian should team up with Oculus Imperia and add to his lore, playing as an Adeptus Arbites character
That could be pretty fun
As an owner of an ashen claws army , it feels weird for better or worse every time someone makes content on my beloved blackshields.
You are not forgotten. But that's not a good thing. 😂
What makes a marine turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power?
IMO It's more likely due to feeling abandoned by the Imperium but unwilling to turn to chaos.
All I know is my gut says maybe
@@THISISSPARTA827Or perhaps they were born with a heart full of neutrality
We Space Sharks like to wave around chapter master's Tyberos's siege gauntlets in front of the Ashen Claws to assert tactical superiority.
Tyberos isn't real. It's just 3 ratlings in a trenchcoat
@sowdog Tyberos is a concept.

YOU DO NOT SEE TYBEROS!
without spoiling too much. Loved thier first interaction with the Charcaradons in the 'Outer Dark' book
Well this is a fun coincidence I just started a ashen claws army for heresy 2 weeks ago
Great video, love the spotlight on the smaller more obscure factions
wait what you mean you don't want every single piece of media around the marines to be about the Ultramarines!?!?!?!?!? -GW brain explodes-

It's always funny with Space Marines turned pirate. Their goal isn't even treasure, it's just fighting for materiel so they can keep fighting.
Always a joy to dive
into weird niches of the lore with you as our guide
oh hell yeah, more renegades adrift in a mad galaxy
Random, I know but I didn't get your dislike of weshammer until I realised he's basically a human tts - more often than not he's just quoting wikis
And he just gives off douche vibes. the thumbnails, the bandana, etc.
And a shill
Sounds like a good time for a resurgence for couple of chapters.
Yes! I've been waiting a long time for this video! The Ashen Claws definitely need more spotlight.

Are there plans to see any more blackshield warbands? Would love a video like this about the dark brotherhood
Awesome as always Ian, brilliant nuggets in this one
Well look here it's Xmas come early!Anothwr great video and cheers all

Love it!
Wondering when the book club for The First Heretic is coming? Cannot wait
Wow I'd never heard of these guys before! Thanks for covering this :)

Watch Shrike offer the ashen claws a chance at redemption if they help fight off a big threat
Redemption is not his to offer. It must be the Primarch

I think that would be the tiger claws.
What is being read from at 23:00? is it an old codex or what?
Most of those are taken from the old Horus Heresy black book series - books 4 and 6 I think?
Excellent Ian
Where can I find more about this renegade blackshield chapter? I'm super interested
This is a group of actually interesting guys. Why have I never heard of them before?
Because GW like to focus on the big chapters.

Further solidified my dislike of the Raven Guard, and Corax. Cheers Ian! Lol
Alright now you're getting really obscure with this chapter. I never even heard about their name before.
Not that obscure, you're just finding out is all.
so obscure that they're not even really a chapter! pre-dating the second founding and all ^^

What's with these asshole chapters with "Claws" in the name?
Ashen Acrylics?

Hmmm... Renegades are cool, but their theme just seems to be "being very mean". OK, cool, but not very engaging for me.
And yet somehow guilleman still managed to get them primaris marines.
😮
When did that happen
