For anyone wondering how giants can be stealthy; in the book “lion son of the Forest” a Fallen Dark Angel explains that he basically just puts on a cloak and walks slowly like a servitor or an abhuman (eg Ogyrn). Apparently giant monster-people are super common on imperial worlds to work in factories, mines, docks etc so they get ignored
In The Gate of Bones Marcus Achalorr stealth kills multiple Chaos astartes. Custodes are silent if they want to be. Their armor doesn't whine and they don't have big power packs that hum.
Makes sense when you consider all the genetic bio-engineering that goes on in 40k. Also inhabitants of worlds with low gravity end up evolving to very tall heights due to the environment they live in
At 9ft tall you need to be one hell of a sneaky bastard to infiltrate potential coups
aren't heavily gene-modded biggies and ogryns pretty standard fare in most hives though? lots of wiggle room, so to speak.
holographic disguises bro
If he hunches over a bit he'll only look like 8 and a half
they use hologram disguises, highly recommend reading blood games it talks all about that
Yeah the ever inflated heights of badasses in the Imperium is one of the most ridiculous parts of the setting, which has many very ridiculous parts.
It's really cool how you credit art. I never see a cool art piece and have to wonder where I could find it.
“Using the most ancient of surveillance technologies.” Now I just have this image of a Custodes hunched over a bank of security cameras.
Show Amazon should be making: the sit-com adventures of a 10,000 year old 9ft demi-God warrior philosopher trying to infiltrate underground cults in Terra 😅
would watch it
No doorframe is safe
He should disguise himself as an ogryn
12ft
Would be much better than 90% of the trash that's on Netflix 😂
"The Misericordia was a symbol of tyrannical rule, coopted to represent the Emperor's judgment and the right of its bearer to act as his sanctioned executioner." Subtle...
As a freight train
That was one of my favourite parts. Great writing, delivered with a straight face
Custodes a great example of Black Library making me start a whole army. Master of Mankind the most expensive book I've ever read 😂
Kinda same but with Valdor: Birth of the Imperium.
It can't be helped. The Custodes were truly badass in Master of Mankind 😅🤣🙂
Custodes are such an interesting faction when you did deep. There's a lot that's thought provoking beyond just 'the strongest warriors'
I really disagree. There was an opportunity to do that, but they've relentlessly avoided showing their flaws and the playerbase doesn't help.
@@terraneaux I think sometimes we demand that everything have flaws. It can be okay to make a character who's premise is that, from an in-universe perspective, they have 'no flaws'. You can then run that idea to it's logical conclusion, and see all the questions it raises.
In this case, Ian's peek into the Custodes Codex showed me that GW authors were glad to tackle those questions.
As opposed to the marketing material which is mostly "Custodes stronk" 💪
I always knew the Custodes were tragic, but having skipped ahead in my Heresy readalong to Valdor and Master of Mankind... dang. I never expected to fall in love with these tragic warrior-philosophers, but, as I approach the climax of Master of Mankind, I begin to feel my heartstrings tugged at what has happened, is happening, and what is to come. The fact they question their free will, that the emperor will telepathically talk to them, the idea that they're literally a whole army version of my roleplaying with my necromunda war dollies back in the day... I never expected to come out of the books wanting to build a cohort and tell their stories, but now I think I have to (that and revisit my first love of Blood Angels :P).
Perhaps the detail I would add to your excellent video is how the Custodes are descibed when fighting in both the books. A force of dispassionate warriors, who fight as if it's just another dull day in the office. Warriors who have overwhelming force versus nearly all foes, yet who pull their first blows to gain time to learn more about their opponents and their culture. No regimented ranks, yet when they fight they an easy ballet with their compatriots, fighting as if it's a dance but with no need for grace or beauty beyond those granted by metaphors for the art of war. Brutal thinking, learning gene-machines who kill because He must be protected, and will just ignore what does not threaten Him.
Custodes: The only faction that is legally allowed to try nuking the Emperor.
I love that little story in the new codex.
I mean the point of those games is to find flaws in the system, if someone can just easily teleport in a warp nuke in the throne room without much issue that is something they need to be prepared for or make sure such a thing can’t happen at all.
YES the golden men, the best bodyguards of the imperium.
Custodes were my first army and remain my largest, been looking forward to this one! Hoping more of their Forge World range appear in present 40K fluff soon. My lunch break can't get here soon enough
ArbitorIan's videos put everyone else to shame. No gimmicks are anything dumb - just pure lore making no qualms about it.
Speaking of having hundreds of names and titles. Dystopianchimp has a video on the custodes where he leans into the bit. Naming all the titles of the golden banana boy for 6 minutes
Wait, the pantsless Custodes are explained in canon by saying they "shed their armour in mourning" for the Emperor? Brilliant.
And then they just... put their armour back on.
Life must go on and all that.
The lore justification is that the closest thing to the Emperor's rightful heir showed up and said "I'm in charge now hop to it" and since the Emperor didn't countermand it they decided it probably meant he was in charge
Very funny that one of the first things Guilliman does when he comes back is to undo all the rules for the Custodes he put in place before he left
10,000 years can change a guys mind!
I mean, he commanded a legion or two of primaris when he set off, which is much more than the 1000 he commanded to be the largest formation...
TECHNICALLY the high lords repealed the edict just before Guilliman came back
@ArbitorIan given what the high Lords were up to for the previous 10,000 years I wouldn't trust them to find their derriere after they finished expulsion!
its actually one of the main plot points of the excellent; Watchers of the Throne by Chris Wraight -the Chancellor of Senatorum Imperialis, the top Imperial Beuracrat below the High Lords takes on the responsibility of trying to get this law revoked, He is one of the 3 POV characters, the political scheming perspective in the weeks just before and as Cadia falls and the great rift split the galaxy.
Great video as ever, but I was hoping you'd mention their role in bringing the Age of Apostasy to an end, just because it was one of my favourite bits of fluff growing up - but I also realise it's hard to explain that briefly as part of a broader video.
Yeah, it's an awkward one, that, as it's kinda one of the only times they've DONE anything in the middle of 30k and 40k!
How do you infiltrate anywhere when you're 9' tall?
Very carefully
Hah!
Yeah, that's been one of those things in Warhammer that's tough to handwave, even in a setting full of "a space wizard did it!"
Alpha Legion...looking at you.
Buuutttt generally the standard line is they imitate other gene-altered entities, from abhumans to chem-enhanced warriors. Since most of these things are built for strength, not smarts, and are generally slaves, no one pays them much attention when monologuing about their evil schemes.
They fade into the background like furniture. Big, deadly, ugly furniture.
On your knees
You use a huge trenchcoat!
By pretending to be three astartes in a trench coat.
One thing in the lore that I liked was when an Astartes said that the Space Marines are like wolves and the Custodes are akin to lions. That has to count for something.
fairly new to 40k law, u mAKE it easier to understand and add lore to my armies, keep doing what ur doing ian
any thoughts on the introduction of female custodes recently? wasn't mentioned in the video.
He's been positive towards it on twitter and he mentions in the video that the custodes were made from the "sons and daughters" of the emperor's foes
That should make Ian's stance clear
@@Fuerto203Absolute chad
Weak. There are no female custodes

Learned more from this than many of the 40K and Heresy book I read. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
You are our favorite Custodian of Lore! Great video as always, Cheers all!
A Dan Abnett book covering the eyes of the emperor would be a good
Chris Wraight's series is excellent
Custodes versus Astartes. It reminds me of when the CD first came out. OG CDs. scratch them with a scouring pad, still worked. Sticky fingerprints, still worked. That is the Custodes. Tiniest scratch, unreadable. fingerprint anywhere, unreadable. Silently rot on the self if left in light for a month or two, unreadable. That's the mass produced, cut price Astarte's in a nutshell.
Thank you for this awesome video, Ian. If you ever get the inclination, could you possibly do an expanded video about the Eyes of the Emperor? I recently made a DnD retired Paladin character heavily inspired by them, and only during that process realized that the internet is largely barren of information and sources about their exploits
"Detramerica" Oh No! The Genelords of DETROIT! XD XD XD
...and the most famous of them, the Captain general, better known as "Kitten"...
According to Valdor's book, the custodes started wearing only armor of plate and leather and unpowered blades
45 seconds in and you're mighty close to heresy there, Ian.
I generally do either matte black or chocolate browns.
Oh different primer.
Nice one Ian. Thanks!
Excellent overview of the ten thousand.
Far out what an insanely good video thank you!
I love their reverse hot dog car
Mira will be swooning again over the Custodes 🥳
I really like the concept of cultured warrior demi god, maybe they do miniatures and wargames in their free time
Might I also suggest the White Scars?
The intro gives chills as always
The custodes are the coolest faction, aside from the grey knights.
I guess the big question is what happened to Valdor? Will he come back? Is he dead?
Only James Workshop knows.
the yellow king is valdor
He will go 1v+-10 against Hovering Coffin, dude literally too badass to die, clone of the second guy´s GF, Bald guy who likes guns, Bitchy telekinecist (love her), one acrobatic redhead, dude literally too badass to die´s driver, Alpharius and his dog and one pet demon
The goat uploads another banger vid
The "greatest" of "humanity" by many metrics, despising what it has become. Love them
I forget what the name of the shield host, but i love the shield host that interpret the dreams the Emperor sends them. To figure out which imperial citizen will contribute greatly to the Imperium and send a bodyguard to protect them until they achieve that act.
I was hoping you would cover that shield host this video
I shall save this for my painting session tomorrow. (Only 1 and a half allurus to go)
Super excited for this video, loving all the vids!
Custodes are not immortal, they age very slowly but they do age, and lose efficiency which causes them to leave active service.
The video doesn’t contradict this.
@@Sneaker3719 the video acknowledges Custodes age when talking about the Eyes of the Emperor but before that it states that Custodes are “virtually immortal” which, currently, is not the case. Custodes may live for thousands of years but can also die of old age.
@@Tulkash01Would be kinda lame with virtually immortal astartes
@@totalCoolerUsername astrates are not virtually immortal either, they can live around 1000 years with some of them going a little bit farther. This discounting chaos gifts or dreadnought entombment (which applies to Custodes as well, admittedly)
@@Tulkash01I don’t think there has ever been one shown to have died of old age? They age for sure, and they feel they get less effective but there have been Custodes known to be still active in 40K who were around pre-heresy.
I love how custodes are written in the Heresy Novels especially first heretic. They are so cocky and such assholes to everyone but you get the feeling they can be like this because they truely ARE superior.
They may be unique, artisan and hand crafted but in my head canon they are cone heads.
Love your stuff Ian.
Could you do videos like these for all the xenos factions please?
Love the grin in the thumbnail...😂
So do the Custodes and the sisters ... bang?
If you 'sometimes donate even an entire generation' , then where does the next generation come from? Sorry, forgot to turn off thinking in time 😅 It's 40k after all.
I mean when the lord can keep getting rejuvenat treatments and pumps out 4 generations before either abdicating or dying... 40k nobles are worse than the British monarchy...
Personally, I think having the Custodes as a playable faction in 40k is just silly. But I don't mind them in the lore. Great video as always!
Well done
It never makes sense that they are so detached from and dismissive of base humanity....these folks are supposed to be educated philosopher warrior kings--how do they not have a love for humanity?....Or is the intent for this to be another example of the rot of the Imperium?
Being an educated philosopher king doesn’t necessarily equate to being morally good or caring.
Besides, they’re still custodes - so much more than human. Why would they care about the proles when they view themselves as the upper echelon of the entire species?
Intellectualism does not necessarily follow empathy, and can often supress it. Plus you've got the "10,000 years spent on guard duty" angle.
@@simonbirch5726 Then they didnt actually learn anything from studying all that philosophy.
@@mikeiserniestudying the field of morals and rejecting "good morals" would be very Warhammer, though
What kind of philosophy do you think have survived the age of strife? I reckon no good ones
Ever since I learned about the Custodes, I've wondered how they have maintained and recovered their numbers after the Emperor was interred on the Golden Throne. I always assumed the Emperor kept the process of their creation a secret, even if it was a collaborative effort with other scientists on Old Earth similar to the Primarch project. Someone knows how, and i can't imagine the Custodes are relegated to doing it themselves, but since they are all savants if science, politics, philosophy and so in, maybe they do?
I'm doing my part to please Algo
Corpse? Corpse! CORPSE STRAPPED TO THE GOLDEN THRONE?! Now you’re in for it buddy! I’m forwarding this to Empress Manga and she’ll be sure to sort you out and set you strait real quick like! I hope you like mucking out the sewers under palace.
Just a question; how does a nine foot warrior HIDE as an Eye of the Emperor?
He's very good at it. Also, the Imperium has various drugs for shape shifting, and you can act via intermediaries. Don't have to do everything personally. And lastly, humanity is varied and some people in 41st millennium are much bigger than average humans, catachans for example, or genemodified labour.
You really just need a good cover story.
Plus, since pretty much noone knows about custodes, it's rather hard to recognise one as such
If a nine-foot tall super-warrior tells you that you didn't see him, then if you're sensible, you didn't see him.
I've always wondered this too. Astartes are always shown as towering over regular humans, and that does not make for a good stealth agent.
The golden throne is knackered.
The Emperor's going to die.
"Golden Barstards."
"Corpse" (0:41) strapped to the golden throne?! I smell a boatload of heresy in this very statement I do! Like the emperor could actually be dead and thus a corpse!

Once again Ian really looking our for the little guys...making the MOST boring faction interesting😂 but ngl this makes the custodes better than what I've read. I just finished Valdor and Master of Mankind and was so disappointed by how careless and uncaring they are
Thank you. 🙏
The Custodes were also meant to be Emperor Chris's friends.
Whatever your views on the ten thousand, the geneforged greatest warriors now having women, we must recognise the reason for "a canon" rather than just calling it "silly". It's called continuity and it allows people to create a continuous story. It's a fundamental tenet of good story telling- a story universe where the "facts", powers, and relationships are relatively understandable. It keeps writers honest and avoids the laziness of changing everything around just for each author's convenience. Like Magnus' narcisim and deep rooted corruption. Imagine if there was a story in the middle where Magnus was just a short dumpy man outgoing man who loved all his brothers and was anti-learning. No problem, apparently for some... after all Games Workshop owns the copyright. Yes, they do, but the fans wouldn't wear it because everything they know about Magnus militates against this.
And just because they've done this sloppiness before doesn't mean it's okay the next time.
Its a common thing that the supper humans are out of touch and removed from the people they protect nice
I actually learned the custodes jetbike formations' formal name of Kataphraktoi was a direct copy-paste of the similar heavy calvalry assets used by the Byzantine Empire. sources: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_army

10:36 Wait, so the Fabstodes weren’t just a joke?!?

Definitely a bit of fridge satire, but humorous nonetheless once you get it.

@@Ryan30zI mean to be fair if the video has a lower like ratio then normal that implies that the people upset ARE the fans who would otherwise be liking. I don’t mind the change either way I just don’t think your logic makes much sense

If you were a true fan you would know this isn't new and GW has retconned alot more things far worse than this, but this is the hill you decide to die on? Not the necrons retcon?, not the end times? Femstodes doesn't appeal to me.
So I don't collect them, or read their stories. I don't even acknowledge their existence.
This seems to me, to be where my input ends.
I get people are upset, on both "sides".
All things pass. Try to be kinder to each other.
What’s interesting is that as much as the custodes are so foreign in emotion and empathy- these guys and girls are still full of personality. Some custodes laugh and joke with the lessers, while some are so earth shatteringly upset about how much the imperium has fallen- even valdor had his favorites and the pseudo friendship he had with the wolf king Russ was always so neat to read about, it just goes to show that despite how far removed from humanity they try to be, to their core- there’s still some human in them and it’s that humanity that makes them so interestingly tragic
They don't start in the ranks as juniors, but there are veterans.
They don't age, but become slow in body and spirit.
Okay? 🤔

Before the Horus Heresy books I thought they were much more strong than regular Astartes, but in novels like The First Heretic (not sure about the name in English) they perform.. meh, not great.
The fluff changed. Initally they "fought like lions" as isolated warriors and were barely stronger that Astartes.
Also in their earlier appearances they were subject to the "Worf Effect" where they were made to lose bady to make others look good.
Now they are absolutely stronger.
The fight in The First Heretic is against especially powerful possessed marines, not just regular astartes.

Talking over closing credits is saomthing that makes your channel extremely british.
I don't know about this "there have always been female custodes" retcon. If GW is sincere about this then they could have made the new custodes model female, would have been an obvious move I think.
But do we want to collect and paint female custodes? They would have to be burly and brawny(see realworld athletes) to keep up with their male counterparts and I think alot of hobbyists, if not most, buy female miniatures to collect and paint feminine physiques.
But if the custodes are created differently compared to Astartes, as I might find out when I continue to watch the video, and the female Custodes are feminine then the males are inferior by a certain amount because they are more muscular, broader and larger targets and easier to hit by the foe.
So to end my musings, I REALLY don't know about this move. But hey! it might turn out to be really popular and grow the fanbase, what do I know.
I'd like to add that GW should listen to a commonly given advice on movie and series review channels: Show, don't tell. Instead of merely writing "There are female Custodes now. They've been here always" they should have made a better effort at introducing them. Pictures(plural) of them in the codex, paintings and other visual renditions. And I cannot understate how important a difference a new female model would have made along with the retcon.
@@spacemanx9595 You can't fault me for articulating my thoughts. You should be constructive when you decide add to the talk, making a condescending reply like you did neither puts your character in a positive light nor does it help the discussion.
I'm perfectly fine with the retcon, I just wish they'd done it in any other way. It feels very "Dumbledore was always gay".
And I don't know about the models angle, having male and female being nigh-indistinguishable works thematically - the Emperor takes people and turns them into weapons-and-only-weapons, and the Custodes are the fullest expression of that.
@@singtothesilence Oh I agree, retcons can be good and are not automatically bad. I personally like the Necrons themselves becoming self aware some codex ago. At least the elite did!
