@Tacsponge The meta-narrative of 40k is perhaps the most interesting element of the setting for me. 40k as a setting should be obtuse, self-contradictory, and filled with unanswered questions. Seeing how different writers and authors handle this can be fascinating but also frustrating at the same time (ex: anything relating to the T'au) The T'au in general are filled with absolute nonsense like "they didn't have FTL" (despite them needing to have it with the timelines established), "their ideology is actually the result of brainwashing" (which is funny because the Imperium does plenty of brainwashing but it's only bad if aliens do it i guess), and other additions meant to make them more "dark" when the appeal is that they're supposed to not feel like they fit into the setting. This has been a fascinating animal documentary, mantis, hawks, raptors, scorpions and now sharks. Any monkeys? (Great series so far, very much enjoying this)
Somewhat a nitpick but It's worth mentioning that not all Terran-born Raven Guards were from the Xeric Tribes of the Asiatic dustfields. We have various examples of Terran-born Raven Guards that are from the Nordafrik Conclaves and Sahelian leagues. These Terran-borns Raven Guards were not banned unlike the Xeric slavers. Corax even kept some as commanding officers such as Soukhounou. Who became commander of the Hawks. Source (Corax: Lord of Shadows), Corax (Anthology) and Ravenlord (Novella)
@willumbermarchant5510 I didn't say the contrary, just pointing something out. A newcomer watching this video might think that all Terran-born RGs are from the Xeric Tribes. Which isn't the case although @Arbitor Ian didn't specify this. Hence why I started my comment saying it was a nitpick
Honestly, "Space Maori that stalk the void between galaxies" is such a fascinating concept and it's a shame they're rarely explored. They're a lot more interesting than the dime-a-dozen space marine chapters because they don't have this "false nobility" of the Blood Angels, Dark Angels, or Ultramarines. They're weapons, not even really human anymore in either sense of the word. The Astartes are at their most interesting when they're monstrous enforcers of a dead and bloated and rotting empire long past its expiration date, a regime that sees human lives as little more than resources to be exploited. The Imperium and its astartes should be horrifying, the end result of a self-destructive fascist state, where humanity itself is vestigial.
I like both, I find the "honorable enforcer of a monstrous regime" interesting, but there's also a lot to do with them barely being human after all the modifications alone, not even mentioning the indoctrination
What I think is most likely for their origin is they and the Ashen Claws are both from the exiled Dust Clad, but after the Heresy they split apart with those still loyal becoming the Carcharodons, and those not loyal became the renegade Ashen Claws. Hence why they seem to work together as they have a shared kinship in their (perhaps forgotten) origin. And would explain why two different groups of marine seem to have the same specific roots.
Yeah, there's no record of how many nomad predation fleets were sent out. We know Arkhas Fal left on one. We know the Ashen Claws were another. We know the Deliverers left later on. Could have been any or none of those fleets
I think the two chapters are different groups of Exiles, the Ashen Claw were exiled pre-Heresy, whereas there were chapters exiled following Istvaan that included red-armored terminators called Deliverers, one chapter of them being the Pale Nomads. Parallel but still distinct entities at the time of exile
I just started making a carcharadons kill team so this is excellent timing. This has quickly become my favorite 40k lore channel. I like the book discussion podcasts especially since it seems so many 40k lore channels don’t even read the books. Also Silent Hunters was not my favorite book. @@ArbitorIan thats fair lol. That was the most eye-roll part of those books for me. The surfing and psychic shark summoning in Silent Hunters was worse somehow
The Badab chapters are probably the most interesting of chapters barring some of the OG ones. The temptation to do a Badab chapter is always high.. probably Lamenters (really looking forward to your video on this!!!!) because my dice are unlucky so it's very on theme for me :P
I just read Red Tithe and Outer Dark. Have been waiting for this video :D. The settings really let them shine as characters and antiheroes, without all the blowing up of hive worlds. I'll have to get onto Silent Hunters now. And as a New Zealander its great to have Polynesian themes in Warhammer 40k (though not sure what an actual Maori/Polynesian would think)
In a similar vein, I love the Mongolian theming of the White Scars. It really helps them (and the Carcharodons) stand out from the rest of the Space Marine chapters.

Great video. Very interesting tattoos the marines have. Love that much of the lore is kept a mystery. Would love to learn more about the edge of the galaxy. Keep up the good work.
One small detail about the charcaradons lore is that pieced together, it looks like the re telling of a shark documentary, how some individuals have their fins marked and are then followed by satelite signal apearing in totally different coasts and seas.
I've been waiting for this video! I happened my way into a space marine army and couldn't figure out what chapter to make them until i found the Carcharodons. I love these guys
There’s something pretty ironic how Corax’s disdain for the Terran 19th and pushing them away to exile in a twisted sense saved them from a somehow even worse fate then their current monstrosity of an existence in 40k. If things kept progressing as normal, they could’ve very well ended up wholly corrupted from being so closely tied to Horus.
I very much like the alternate theory that they are the remains of the loyalist Night Lords, and was disappointed you didn't even mention that option, but the argument for them being Raven Guard is pretty convincing too! Love them sharkey space marines
If it can be of any consolation, the Carcharodons almost surely have Night Lords geneseed in their ranks. During the Heresy, the Ashen Claws raided the Nostramo Sector, including the gene-seed of the defending Night Lords, and it's quite likely that it was used for the Carcharodons as well.
One of the problems with doing videos on the Carcharodons is that there are SO many fan theories without any lore to support them. I try and steer clear of including random fan theories as much as possible.
Honestly I've seen many fan theories and haven't read anything from the Black books. This is pretty compelling that the raven guard connections are clear and intentional. One thing that's hard to find sometimes is the order that the sources came out in! So it's clear now that they had hints towards the charcharadons in mind whenever they wrote the Terran Raven guard fluff
I think the reference to the commander that led them into the void being called the forgotten could also be a hint to the lost primarch that's frequently named as "the forgotten". It isn't a theory I think holds much water but GW does love dropping multiple potentials for any mystery.
In the novels the carcharadons mention that when the forgotten one returns he will judge the actions of the ashen claws. So most likely the Forgotten is Corax
@@bluhd2265 the forgotten one is explicitly said to be a child of the emperor, so definately a primarch. and the ashen claws, which is certainly a raven guards derived group, are counted as brothers by the Carcharadon's as warriors of the forgotten one. to which the Ashen claws responded "but we haven't forgotten him", which pretty much seals the deal i think. the forgotten one is corax.

Speaking of which, do you think Blackshieds like Endren Harr from the Blackshield books might've joined the Space sharks, or at least some of his World Eaters?
I don't know what ADB is up to but in the short story The Long Night, its heavily implied that Sevatar is in some way associated with the Charcarodons. In one scene he dreams of "the sightless sharks of Nostramo's black oceans." He also muses, "The rim is where the true enemies of mankind can be found." He even has a "pet" Raven Guard in Prince of Crows. I think his story is not yet over and I'll wager he'll be taking himself and the remnants of his band to Shark Turf (tm) at some point.
I've been waiting for this one since the announcement of this series! I, at the very least, want to make a kill team, maybe even a boarding patrol of these guys, their lore is super cool and the idea of space sharks is so stupid it loops around to being genuinely frightening. It is odd being a fan of both them and the Mantis Warriors, but thats how it is sometimes
Everything screams world eaters and raven guard to me with this chapter but I love seeing my shark boys get some love anywhere on RUclips thanks for the video =)
We don't know much about Fal himself, but we do know that a portion of his command went blackshield during the Heresy, under the command of the famed Praetor Nerat Kirine. They were the Ashen Claws, and they still exist as a separatist faction out in the Halo Stars. During the Heresy, they scoured the Nostramo Sector between 10-11.M31, after the Thramas Crusade, far from the Heresy's front lines, neutralising the threat of the Night Lords as a single coherent Legion. But they fought for resources, not for the Emperor, because they also attacked and robbed some Ultramarines on the planet of Desperation. From what we can gather, the Space Sharks are the portion of Arkhas Fal's forces that refused to abandon their oaths to the Imperium, as opposed to the Ashen Claws. All this is from Horus Heresy Book 6 - Retribution, by Forge World.
Never before have there been more true and authentic sons of Conrad, I mean Corax. Sorely underutilized along with their sister RG successors, the Raptors. There's a great story in there, should they ever decide to put them in the same campaign.
Love the video. I love this series. Quick question. You didn’t mention how their chapter master is the biggest space to date with modified terminator and dreadnought armor to make his armor because of the size.
That's because it's not true. Fans misunderstood that 'tactical dreadnought armour' is just another name for Terminator Armour and he slowly got bigger and bigger and bigger in memes.
If I wasn’t already doing Fallen I’d probably look at building an Ashen Claws army. There’s something about them which I prefer to the Carcharodons, even though they are both implied to be former Raven Guard. It’d be cool if you followed up your Badab videos with other chapters like them or the Maelstrom Warderns: the Charnel Guard seem pretty interesting too.
My homebrew chapter does a similar abduction where they abduct guardsmen and other tough humans as chapter serfs or to settle their homeworld. They also sometimes collect undesirables to give to their local Forgeworld.
Personal head canon for these guys is that they are the exiled Terran 19th as well as warbands of loyalist Night Lords and World Eaters who either survived Istvaan or were never there in the first place and exiled themselves out fear of repercussions for being associated with those brothers who turned their backs on the Imperium
"Hooray, it is the Space Sharks! There going to save us all!" *five minutes later* "Oh no, it is the Space Sharks! There going to kill and/or enslave us all!" Thanks for the video.
Hey Ian (or anyone tbf) I'm coming towards the end horus heresy series and have no idea where to start with the actual 40k stuff I thought that arks of omen is the most recent stuff to bring me up to date with what's currently happening in the 41milenium but then I found out that there not actually novels and basic like rule books with some short stories in I picked up a copy of lion son of the forest but I'm not really sure if it's where I should start
Really dig the Polynesian stylings of their armor markings. Such a refreshing thing to look at in a universe that seems to be hard-coded Western Gothic! Makes me happy beyond words. Like, I get it, cathedrals and gargoyles are all pretty and intimidating…but if you’ve seen one Basilica to Saint Bumfuckerius the Ass Kisser, you’ve pretty much seen them all. You can spam fleur-di-lis all you’d like and cover the damn thing in skulls, but all you’ve done is make it busy and too noisy to look at. Sorry for hashing the vibe; just wanted to get that off my chest.
a white dwarf establishes that one of their strike cruisers joined the Indomitus crusade (the 2nd crusade fleet iirc?). no doubt they got it then, since all the chapters that joined that crusade got the tech for primaris.
I like to veleive the Ashen Claws and the Caracardons are both descendants of the ExiledTTerran astares, some who took their mission from their primarch as a task for redemption, and the other seeing it what really was, a way to get rid of the more radical parts of the 19th
Largely unknown to the imperium. Preys on imperial worlds. Definitely not renegades. This is one of the great things about Outer Dark where they're comparing themselves to the Ashen Claws, but the human characters spend the whole book trying to figure out if they're renegades or not. The only thing that separates them from renegades is their force of will to protect the empire, and their insistence that their edicts justify whatever actions they take. Would love to see an Inquisitor try to verify or judge them on their edicts...
Wait… The chapter calls the first chapter the forgotten one. I wonder if that is a reference to a different legions primarch. Maybe one whose memory was removed by malcador?
The 11th raven guard chapter in the heresy kept the name "pale nomads" and was the terminator elite that corax hated. The 18th chapter specifically was the ashen claw, the 11th were kept around because the deliverers (terminators) were useful to a point While the 18th were exiled / abandoned earlier at gate42, The 11th pale nomads would be sent off in a seperate exile. Make of that what you will. A chapter mostly made up of Terran terminators Source: breaking of the perfect fortress - gw

It is odd being a fan of both them and the Mantis Warriors, but thats how it is sometimes
Wooooo! Been waiting for this since the series started! 🦈🦈🦈🩸🩸🩸
Hell yeah! As a new fan of 40K this chapter has interested me most and I've been wanting to learn more about them!
There's some audio issue around 25:00
been waiting for this one!!
Great video, would be great if u did one on the hawk lords
Everything screams world eaters and raven guard to me with this chapter but I love seeing my shark boys get some love anywhere on RUclips thanks for the video =)
Currently reading through 'Red Tithe' and already got 'Outer Dark' by far my favourite chapter
Good to know their novels have your seal of “Pretty good”, gonna be reading them soon
Shark Week on Arbiter Ian’s channel? 😂
Another great vid 👌
Great lore video on small and not main Chapter.
I'd love it if you made a vid on servitors
Wish we got some more info of Arkhas Fal and his fellow Raven Gurd exiles and what they were up to during the Heresy!
All this is from Horus Heresy Book 6 - Retribution, by Forge World.
if there does end up being a scouring novel series, this would make a good addition to it
One thing I would like to see would be a fight between the Carcharodons and the Minotaurs.
Never before have there been more true and authentic sons of Conrad, I mean Corax. Sorely underutilized along with their sister RG successors, the Raptors. There's a great story in there, should they ever decide to put them in the same campaign.
My head cannon is they are a Ravenguard and Night Lords successor chapter too
Love the video.
Love this series. Can't wait for the lamenters
What timing. Latest audible credit just dropped and was looking at the silent hunters BL novel. That's me sold and sorted!
Great video. Please do the minotaurs next.
Absolutelt loving these Badab Space marine chapters!!
Is there more stuff like this you can cover after this Finnish’s???
My homebrew chapter does a similar abduction where they abduct guardsmen and other tough humans as chapter serfs or to settle their homeworld. They also sometimes collect undesirables to give to their local Forgeworld.
I’d like to see some more videos on loyalist chapters that can be traced to the traitor legions.
Personal head canon for these guys is that they are the exiled Terran 19th as well as warbands of loyalist Night Lords and World Eaters who either survived Istvaan or were never there in the first place and exiled themselves out fear of repercussions for being associated with those brothers who turned their backs on the Imperium
This was a great soundbite!
Star Phantoms next would be very gr8!!!
"Hooray, it is the Space Sharks! There going to save us all!"
*five minutes later*
"Oh no, it is the Space Sharks! There going to kill and/or enslave us all!"
Thanks for the video.
Man the Carcharodon novels are so good!
YEEEESSS! THE SPACE SHAAAARRKS!
I’m not going to complain about space sharks but… Minotaurs plz!
Please do a video for the Star Phantoms next Ian
Robbie Macniven, a Black Library author, said online that the Carcharodons had received primaries technology through the Grey Tithe.
a white dwarf establishes that one of their strike cruisers joined the Indomitus crusade (the 2nd crusade fleet iirc?). no doubt they got it then, since all the chapters that joined that crusade got the tech for primaris.
Doo doo da doo da doo Spess Muhreen Shark da doo dah doo…
I do miss my sherk boys, sold them years back…
Just listened to Red Tithe … pretty great listen
is there any way to get those horus heresy black books these days?
They still use a lot of scouts so that's a big sign of Corax's gene-seed.
I like to veleive the Ashen Claws and the Caracardons are both descendants of the ExiledTTerran astares, some who took their mission from their primarch as a task for redemption, and the other seeing it what really was, a way to get rid of the more radical parts of the 19th
“We’re gonna need a bigger battle barge”
Please feature Iron Snakes! ❤
I personally have always felt that thematically it would have made more sense to hint that their origins were from the Blood Angels.
I, for one, ascribe to the theory that Tyberos, the Red Wake, is actually the cloned reincarnation of Konrad Curze.
After Raven Raven of the Raven Guard, Tiburon (Spanish for "shark") of the Carcharodon Astra (Space Sharks)
Yay for Space Sharks!
A very cool Not-Renegade space marine chapter.
Wait…
The chapter calls the first chapter the forgotten one.
I wonder if that is a reference to a different legions primarch.
Maybe one whose memory was removed by malcador?
FINALLY! THE SHARKS!!!
The 11th raven guard chapter in the heresy kept the name "pale nomads" and was the terminator elite that corax hated. The 18th chapter specifically was the ashen claw, the 11th were kept around because the deliverers (terminators) were useful to a point
While the 18th were exiled / abandoned earlier at gate42, The 11th pale nomads would be sent off in a seperate exile. Make of that what you will. A chapter mostly made up of Terran terminators

My favourite chapter
I like to imagine that Homo Sapiens Oceanus is part of the special sauce of the Carcharodons geneseed
