Borderline personality disorder is often misdiagnosed. Here to talk about why and when this happens is leading clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula. Dr. Ramani ends the interview with the top things someone can do to avoid a misdiagnosis.
    She answers:
Which disorders is BPD most often misdiagnosed as and why?
What happens when BPD is misdiagnosed?
What steps can someone take to make sure their BPD doesn't get misdiagnosed as a different condition?
If someone is misdiagnosed with a different condition, what are the possible side effects of taking medication?
How can someone help a loved one who might have BPD but was misdiagnosed with a different condition?

I have months of depression and have months of been as high as a kite but never so high as to be hospitalised but over the 6 months I lost control of my emotions and would cry at the drop of a hat. Over absolutely nothing and I have been coming out of a 6 month depressive episode that involved the uncontrolled emotion.
The Psychiatrist diagnosed me with Bpd, with 50% traits of Type 2 Bipolar and 50% of Cyclothymia.
I have watched lots of your videos on Bpd and only in the last 6 months have I related to about half of the things associated with Bpd.
I just feel confused Because I'm now diagnosed with Bpd yet I have distinct episodes of low and high and only in the last 6 months have I displayed symptoms similar to some aspects of Bpd, is what I described still Bpd with the other traits or do you think the diagnosis is incorrect?
      Any advice greatly appreciated

These personally disorders are bullshit. It’s all trauma. This is a scapegoating for what is intergenerational trauma and/or neurological in nature. Borderline is Complex PTSD. Borderline/Narc mothers were traumatized in childhood and pass it on. To discover being on the autistic spectrum through a soul-destroying, Medical-PTSD inducting system that missed the developmental delays, physical underdevelopment, sensory issues, food and seasonal childhood allergies, dyspraxia, stimming, connective tissue issues, and later hormonal ( “pmdd” ) issues etc etc. Guess I was masking too well, or being manipulated into thinking I’m damaged, inferior, crazy, too much, too sensitive, overreacting etc!
Get off meds! Like she said “ Trust Your Gut!” Then heal it with real eating.. Nutrition healed depression. Healing the scapegoat role and seeing the undiagnosed autistic baby boomer father in family system shed light on opportunistic unhealed and undiagnosed borderline baby boomer mother. She was traumatized. He is on the spectrum. What isn’t labeled repeats. Women on the spectrum who have no idea they’re on the spectrum, eventually burn out! To come to decades of misdiagnosis and undiagnosed autism/pdd-nos has been unreal. Came round the back way through autoimmune hell and cptsd. Years of studying/researching/investigation because it is a Special Interest! Very autistic . I had no choice to buck the system that won’t look at diet/lifestyle and decades of malnutrition/early physical breakdown from trying to do as neurotypical individuals do. Clean eating sorted depression. Healing family wounds from being made the crazy one isn’t as easy. It all comes down to building positive self regard, gut health and many many rounds neural retraining. Those will heal your. chronic anxiety state too from a nation( or parents) that wants to numb you to feeling unsafe which is a natural reaction given the lack of true empathy and compassion when most aren’t aware they’re regularly dissociated,. ADHD and brain fog . Chronic histamine issues and mood disturbances . See Child allergies and behavioral changes! Hypervigilance and irritation /strong reactions to loud noises/auditory sensitivity in cptsd and autism. Wax earplugs at night were the norm for 8 years after last med withdrawal( snri-venlaflaxine) You heal from the meds and then you heal from the thing that put you on meds. The answer lies in the nutrition, healing the intestinal lining and calming an overactive fight/flight/fawn/freeze being. .

The hardest part of having mental illness or a personality disorder is that people are so willing to accept when a person says they have kidney or gallbaldder or other organ issues- but refuse to acknowledge the brain is also something that can get sick also. It sometimes compounds symptoms

    • @ReiShinigami
      @ReiShinigami 2 года назад +4

Well, the thing is, those are disorders that can destroy human bodies entirely. Without kidneys, you cannot filter toxins, and gall bladders can rupture when infected, and cause many other issues (Mine were removed for said reason).
I get what you're saying. I have MS, and I fall in between- Invisible *physical* ailment, and it is also in my brain (lesions). I do understand your point, and the brain is a motherboard that needs treatment also- but organ failure of any kind can cause major issues, too. And degenerative disorders of the brain *are* acknowledged.for the most part.

I think Drs who don't understand medical conditions just tell you its psychological.
I was involved in a car accident age 21; it was a high speed T bone impact and damaged my spine. I walked away from the accident and was told I had whiplash. I've been in pain 24/7/365 days ever since that accident. I cant remember what it's like to be pain free. The only thing that varies is the severity of the pain. It took 10 years to get a diagnosis of chronic pain; I was told it was all in my head and psychological, I was attention seeking. Then I spent the next 10 years being told that my chronic pain was caused by my personality because I had a traumatic childhood.
Because I am constantly in pain I find it hard to cope some days. Because people cant see the pain I am in they get upset and offended when I don't smile or I get seen as being miserable all the time; they take offence on the days I get withdrawn because I'm struggling with the pain. I even find that my tone of voice is also an issue because quite frankly being in pain constantly is a strain and that is sometimes reflected in my voice; it lowers my capacity to take shit from people and they get easily offended. It generally ends up with conflict and I've had to withdraw from the workplace because of it.
I've also had decades of Drs telling me I should be used to it and because I have difficulty coping I've got mental health issues. Then there is the general perception of what constitutes a disability. If you cant see a person's disability then apparently its just that person's perception they've got a disability and again its a mental health issue.
That's just reminded me of a podcast about stupidity.

I also find that a lot of Drs are Narcs. Especially working in the field of mental health.
In the UK, I think medical students with mental health issues or a history of abuse are encouraged to go into this side, one because they have a better understanding but also it gives them the opportunity to work on themselves via supervision. (Supervision is the term for mandatory therapy sessions for therapists)
Sadly, that's means too many therapists with blind spots and their own issues.
I've found the standard of care for mental health in the UK to be quite disgusting. If it can't be handled with a pill there is F all anyone will do.
The best therapist I ever got access to was via prosecutorial diversion. It seems like the only way you will actually get support is if you break the law. It's an F'ng joke! Police wonder why people stand in front of a security camera and shoplift, its to get therapy!

      @mimi42428 Год назад

      nope this is not why,
the illnesses you describe do not affect another person. if the person who has kidney or gallbladder issues refuse to acknowledge or get help for it, it only affects them, noone else. with personality disorders they affect people arround them severely especially those unwilling to acknowledge their mental illness and seek help. People aren't obligated to just accept them and their issues especially since they can sometimes be a danger to others. yes they are ill but others don't deserve to sifrer because the bpd person chooses to live in denial

The medication can help ease some symptoms, so that you then have energy to address the disorder - the final step is what so many doctors neglect to recognise. Especially when a person can find healthy coping mechanisms to deal with some symptoms and don’t want medication, but they still struggle with their disorder, then Doctors are far more likely to say “well if you don’t need medication then what’s the problem?” 😔

Dr. Ramani, I would love for you to do a video on BPD vs. ASD/Asperger's. Some people on the spectrum can have emotional "meltdowns" and I think these can be confused with BPD emotional outbursts. Coupled with relationship difficulties, rigidity (with BPD being from the personality D/O, with ASD being from a desire to avoid changes in routine and/or because of cognitive deficits and executive functioning challenges) it can be difficult for the layperson and sometimes the professional, to tell the difference.

Females with Autism especially, given their sophisticated way of masking and mirroring, can easily be mistaken for BPD in terms of the identity piece.

    • @AspieMoonWoman
      @AspieMoonWoman Год назад

In autism . There's no constant meltdowns
In bpd there's constant mood shift.
Autism has sensory processing difficulties. Bpd doesn't or their sensory problems will show differently as part of complex trauma.
      Autism have obsessions
Not with ppl but subjects and things
The pattern in obsession in bpd is relational.
Autism has identity. The person doesn't feel empty and can clearly identify his identity based on preferences and obsessions and their ritualistic needs.
Bpd can not stay alone and be okay with it
It will trigger maladaptive pattern of self harm issues or sthg yo numb the emptiness.
      Autistic have over logical brain.
Bpd have emotion and reactive brain filter where logic is rarely part of their reasoning.
Both do not understand ppl but in BPD it's coming from s constant shift in perception due to constant shift in moods and affection.
Autism is not like ADHD or BPD on terms of mood shifting from extreme to another on one same day. Unless they have BPD as comprbidity
      In autism
The person doesn't have fear of absdonned so dysfunctionally..in fact the most common style of attachment in ASD is avoidant dismissive.
      BPD is preoccupied/anxious.
      Other things in autism
      Incapacity to generalise.
      Or the opposite
      Generalising way over the necessary
Autism is big in problems such interoception
They is not accurately getting my emotions in intensity nlr priority
So may bleed and not feel may forget eat.
In Autism thrted difficulty that the person may mask by hiding their stims and their obsessions to avoid monologues .but will not identify the personality of someone else from religion to system of values. They will mask only by hiding or by smiling .
The style of verbal communication in autism along with eye contact and body language will have some signs of diversity that NT will notice after a while.
Autistic ppl have tremendous difficulty to lying ..
      Gaslight.
      Turning tables..never.
      Finally.
BPD have a sort of coping mechanism that usually involve impulsive manic Like state.
Autism when anxious will either repeat.. develop OCD like tendencies..or become too rigid all the time. Functional towards others emotions
Finally again 😅 asd shows up since birth
      With sensory processing.
      Motor challenges..
      Tolerating a very stimulating environment.
The sensory processing is as huge subject In add not BPD.
Thrtrs actually more ways totellyou the difference...the partner of autistic ppl mostly feel avoided.
On BPD he feels not stable... whole Autism is very predictable to the ppl who knlw the person.
      Having said that
      Some pp
      Have both.
But the BPD dominate totally the traits of as autism.
Also when blth o occur..the over logic brain will have a huge impact on the clinginess and splitting that happen with the BPD.
Autism is a neurodevelepmental condition. Born with it .
BPD starts in teens and a personality disorder.
Very close to ADHD and Rejection sensitivy dysphoria.
Those mood shifts don't happen in autism like that

@@AspieMoonWoman Thank you; you've explained this very well, although I don't agree that everyone on the spectrum avoids their partner. I think if we know a person's history it is easier to tell what is going on, but when we meet an adult we can't always know the mechanisms and history behind the behavior. And yes, actually many - but not all - autistic people have emotional meltdowns, and people can mistake it for emotional "outbursts" which are not the same. I think Dr. Ramani should make a video delineating the differences. She could use your list of things as a start, because you have a lot of good points here!

@@AspieMoonWomanI disagree on a couple of points, especially around ASD not becoming obsessed with people as that can definitely happen if there is one special friend or a special interest for example in a band.
I think as well although ASD is present from birth, many go undiagnosed for years and constant masking can lead to confusion in identity because you essentially train yourself to fit in to avoid the "you're over sensitive" or "weird" comments. Further, constant masking can indeed lead to frequently occurring meltdowns or a long term shut down that can appear like mood swings or instability that are actually autistic burnout.
There are also so many I could go on about such as eating disorders etc but I can see very easily how ASD can be diagnosed as BPD, especially when treating professionals are short on time and don't take time to fully understand what's going on.

I have a friend who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in her early teens. I always thought that her diagnosis didn't really fit, but I didn't really do anything about it until I watched a documentary about borderline personality disorder. I had heard about the disorder before, but I didn't know much about it except of the fear of being left alone. It was like they were describing my friend, so I told her about it and that she should mention it to her therapist. After years of drug abuse, self harm, broken relationships, internal stress and suffering, she was finally diagnosed with BPD.
Having the right diagnosis is extremely important in terms of getting treatment, but also understanding. I think I've always been quite tolerant to different kinds of people, but dealing with someone with BPD can be extremely draining and become a whole day job when you're being used as an emergency call center. To be honest, I felt like I had enough and was ready to leave at any moment, and because I felt like there was nothing more to be done, because it would be the same kinds of problems over and over again. For the first time in a long time, I'm feeling hopeful that we can have a more balanced friendship in the future. She really is a good person, but that kind of disappeared in all her problems, needs and reactions. I realize that she'll never become normal, but hopefully to a place where we can be friends instead of me feeling like I'm caring for a defiant toddler.

This makes me very worried of myself. The way you described your friend is probably how my close friends/bf would describe me. I've never seeked diagnoses for mental illness but I'm aware my emotions and reactions arent healthy. I believe I have a good heart and good intentions, but when I'm (easily)triggered, it's like impending doom/sadness and disgust towards myself. When this happens I feel hopeless and break down to my bf. I'm scared because I put him thru a lot when I feel like this, and I'm realizing I've done this to friends too at a young age. I break down and express how much I hate myself and how I wish I was different. I'm so grateful that he puts up with this. However, when this happens, there's nothing in that moment that will make me accept his love or help, yet I need him there, he's all I want and need when I feel like that. But at the same time I'm going thru that break down I'm pushing him away, feeling undeserving of his affection and support, saying I want to hurt or kill myself, etc. I don't mean to act like that. The last thing I want is to put him in that position, to where he feels like walking on eggshells to save my life and make me feel better. I'm so afraid he's just gonna get fed up because I'm such a burden but when you love someone of course they're not gonna see u like that. I don't know how to regulate or control my emotions or even expect it. It's ruining relationships with everyone in my life but luckily they're patient enough to not push me away(completely). Somedays I feel better abt myself, but I can't help but feel so bad about what I put everyone thru all because I hate myself. My mom is a narcissistic and I think it's a big factor in my constant self shaming and misperception of myself inside and out. I'm constantly watching mental illness videos reading everyone's comments trying to relate and this is the first time I've commented. I really hope I can get advice and relate to other people's struggles because these types of problems are hard to express and talk about.

For ten years, I was taking pills for bipolar (Quetiapine and Prozac) as prescribed by my doctor. The only change I noticed was that I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't take the Quetiapine, and my rage symptoms subsided a bit with Prozac. The rage was the issue in my relationships, so I just assumed the problem was bipolar and side-effects were just part of it. Suicidal thoughts were the norm, and I swatted them away like flies. It was exhausting.
Only recently did I follow through on my suspicions and start questioning things. The first video I watched with Dr. Ramani knocked my socks off! It was like all the stuff that didn't fit bipolar suddenly made sense. I consumed every video I could find on borderline personality disorder.
A couple of weeks ago, I scheduled an appointment with a specialist in my area in borderline personality disorder. At the end of our first session, his exact words were, "Even a blind person can see your're borderline."
    I started sobbing.
Forty years of searching for answers. An outcast who destroyed relationships with the efficiency of a Panzer tank division. And now I finally have one.
DBT therapy and hypnosis starts this week.
    I can't wait!
NOTE: Been off the meds for almost two months now, and my suicidal thoughts have completely gone away. Even discussing it here is the first time bringing it up in weeks.

“Be willing to tweak the hypothesis as more information comes in”- so key in probably every aspect of Life. We tend to focus on tweaking labels when it’s all about finding the right course of treatment. Maybe if we drop the labels and just focus on treatment plans people like myself can stop frantically searching for a category to fit into. We are all unique variations of humans on this planet with diverse experiences and intensity, but it’s how we cope with and express ourselves that should be the motivation behind our quest.

I was misdiagnosed with BPD in the Marines. My history didn’t indicate any personality disorder symptoms. I was told there was no effective help available for BPD. At least they didn’t kick me out for it. I was honorably discharged 9 mo later. Because there was “no effective treatment” I didn’t seek help until three years later. l was diagnosed with depression. It’s just been in the last couple years that I started talking about the trauma issues. Got diagnosed with PTSD. The experience in the Marines made me distrustful of mentioning the traumatic incidents.

BPD is often misdiagnosed in females. They may actually be autistic. Autistic females fall through the cracks because most clinicians think autism is a male syndrome. Autistic females present differently than males and since some clinicians don't/won't recognize that, females are diagnosed as having BPD and/or BP 1. It's really sad that this happens. Also, older/geriatric adults are misdiagnosed with dementia when in fact they are on the autism spectrum. This causes so many problems because the females and older adults are given the wrong treatment modalities. I urge people to get a 2nd even 3rd opinion. If the diagnosis doesn't feel right or doesn't 'click', then see someone else. Trust your gut feelings. Also, do your due diligence and research your diagnosis or suspected diagnosis. Talk to someone whom you trust and ask questions. Lots of questions. Also, know your rights as a patient. Check with your local / state regulatory agencies to garner information about your therapist or psychiatrist. Thank you.

I think some Asperger and BPD traits are similar. But we tend more to diagnose women with borderline and put men on the autism spectrum.
I think this is because of a cultural gender bias : Society tend to emphasize the importance of relational intelligence in women and social conformity in men.
So mental health professionals maybe are more likely to inconsciously favorise different treatement based on the gender of the client. I think I could be wrong but that’s my opinion of the moment...

I was diagnosed with bipolar two 25 years ago. I was also diagnosed with severe anxiety/PTSD. I've seen over 8 therapists and multiple psychiatrist who have treated me with many meds. I left a comment in another video idk if anyone reads them but long story short. I'm a survivor of childhood abuse from age 4-23 physically and mentally till I was 30. My father was a narcissistic sociopath functioning drug addict and alcoholic. I by the grace of God was able to function and maintain somewhat of a "normal " life. Multiple abusive relationships of course. I'm a 5 1/2 yrs cancer survivor!!! I've been on lamictal for 10 years I went off couple others but couldn't manage this one. It's a mood stabilizer/ antidepressant?? But some days I'm no so sure its helping. I stopped therapy because I was tired of the textbook talking and not genuinely listening to me. I would pay to finally after 25 years talk to someone who knows what the hell they're doing. 😥

These videos about BPD have been so insightful as I believe my Mom suffers from it. She hasn't received a diagnosis yet, nor do I believe she will unless she's compelled to. Me and 2 of my siblings have all received therapy due to the toxic relationship we've had with our mother, and all 3 of our therapists have suggested my Mom has BPD. Obviously an official diagnosis can't come unless my Mom meets with a therapist and is fully truthful about her past, but I'd like to think an unofficial diagnosis from 3 independent therapists means something.

I was misdiagnosed as bipolar 2 by two licensed psychiatrists in India. I was on medication, including lithium, for more than two years. Each time I brought up chronic feelings of emptiness, I was told that it's the depression. And I studied bipolar to educate myself and kept thinking when would my manic episode come because I always felt like my days are all over the place, as if I was being bipolar in spans of an hour or two. It was last year when a licensed therapist here spotted certain others symptoms and borderline made so much sense to me than bipolar ever did. Not saying getting diagnosed with either of those is a happy thing, or for that matter any mental illness, but it brought me a hell lotta peace to have a name that actually matches what happens in my days and life these days build up. I have relied heavily on this channel for educational purposes, and I am super grateful to y'all for making this content so accessible. It gave me a perspective that, like in any profession, there are not so awesome professionals in psychiatry - it's still hard to not be angry about my history of misdiagnosis, but there are therapists that focus on actually treating people for cure, rather than ensuring a constant supply of patients in health system. My relationship with my family has changed drastically, and while I'm still borderline, I'm not misdiagnosed and I'm working through this and this channel has been a part of that journey. Thanks a lot, y'all. This has meant a great deal of help. 💚

I personally blame the mould as it stopped when the carpet was replaced. I lost my temper during the assessment at my mother for invalidating my childhood experience as i was clearly neglected but she said i was happy. Due to sleep deprivation etc i sadly wasn't able to stifle my reaction. I havent been able to get a second/third opinion, but this diagnosis drastically impacts how people treat you.

Two days ago my new doctor ( who I opened up to more and after doing research to talk to) confirmed that I have OCD and he believes based on evidence that I was misdiagnosed ( as I stopped self harming when I got away from my abuser and have no suicidal plans) and while I still feel like I'm a bad person and doubt myself and think everyone thinks I'm lying ( CPTSD) I really feel happy knowing what's really wrongs and finally being heard by a therapist who isn't also speaking to my abuser and taking sides. I hope to get better soon and I've already stopped hoarding and have been working on avoiding compulsions and to stop washing/sanitizing my hands and everything so much and I no longer recoil/flinch and sanitize myself when touched for the first time in decades. I feel like I'm finally making progress.

I'm so grateful that it was expressed to get a proper diagnosis, it could take weeks or even months. I was determined to get the appropriate diagnosis, which I finally gained after seeking unhelpful guidance of a few therapists.

I’m trying the 4 components of therapy for bpd. In just 2 weeks I have been able to redirect my emotions and realize I can change my thoughts to change my feelings thus emotions and helping me to recognize the situation.

I were misdiagnosed with Bipolar and BPD in my early/mid teens, and placed on psychiatric meds to "control moods". It weren't until I weaned myself off them solo, and actually felt normal doing so that doctors listened. It turns out I am on the spectrum (ASD). It were always suspected as a child that I had Aspergers.
I do NOT advise this for anyone at ALL, also. I were a special circumstance. It just can show many times BPD can be confused with other ailments.

Your videos are such an amazing blessing Dr. Ramani. I was diagnosed bipolar II 30 yrs ago and the stigma of the diagnosis caused so much harm to me and terrible side effects of 100mg Amitriptyline/600mg Sodium Valproate. The Amitriptyline caused such terrible mania etc etc. I had a very traumatic life and my intense distress anger lostness impulsivity and constant crying (TBI 2/52 LOC) L Hemiplegia age 18 just about killed me. Wrong decisions while severely depressed so much heartache. I stopped all meds a year ago apart from 25mg Amitriptyline for sleep and have withstood 18 months of bullying from an older sib and not a single peep have I made. I've just discovered I'm a quiet BPD who turns my helplessness and rage inwards. I feel so liberated but unfortunately am now 64 and live on a farm with my sib miles from town and no medical aid. He has an explosive demeanor and traumatizes me on the trips to town, drives so recklessly is he insane not to see the danger? and his covert jibes at me are now becoming overt and causes great distress. An hour later he's completely blasé as if nothing happened. And I being a kind person lack the courage to tell him but enough videos imply that he may have some covert narcissistic traits so it's useless even speaking to him. He's had me a gibbering mess doubting my own sanity for months. It's just totally crazy making stuff lol but we have to find someday to avoid the arrows not so. The overwhelming anxiety is terrible. The worst is, there's nothing at all wrong with the way he treats me is there...and see someone? Why, hes 71 and there's nothing at all wrong with him we must be crazy. Grow a tougher skin my dear....

It was the decades of professionals misdiagnosing me, not random people. And how would I have known BPD was the diagnosis??? And I knew was things weren't getting better. Bipolar, chonic depression, MDD, GAD, and dysthymia were the diagnoses. A friend pointing me toward BPD, and they weren't a professional. After talking about BPD to the therapist at the time, did the switch flip and diagnosis finally fit. But I still fight with new therapists for the not bipolar one. It is like their training didn't include understand of what the actual diagnoses are.

Kinda off topic but it's something I've noticed A LOT of. So DBT skills includes mindfulness and a lot of self-help gurus and new age spiritual gurus talk a lot about mindfulness too. I've noticed individuals with BPD are very vulnerable to these con artists. There are a decent handful of good self-help gurus out there but from my personal experience and my own research MANY of them are not trust worthy. I see a lot of individuals with BPD get caught up in new age bs because they're selling over simplified and twisted DBT skills. I think that's something that should be talked about a lot more considering so many people are falling victim to these con artists and sometimes even cult leaders.

This is a better video than others about bpd. I have been in therapy for over 25 years straight. I was diagnosed bipolar 2 then bipolar1 then scizzoaffective. Which is right on and then it wasnt until 2011 I was hospitalized and determined I had bpd. I rejected it and went on my way. Fast forward to 2018 and I was 5150 twice in a month and given bpd as diagnosed by different dr. I have been hard to Medicare with all that is going on and just this year we have managed to get the scizzoaffective under some control and then trauma happened repeatedly over the past year and made my bpd come alive. Drs thought it was me rapid cycling but it was bpd and now I have been doing therapy three to four times a week with therapist and on the off days I call the hospitals crisis hotline. Yes you can be diagnosed with more than one mental illness. It's like being diagnosed with diabetes which is different than heart disease and cancer and copd. They need to be treated differently. My therapists love me because I am always pushing to improve my bpd as it has destroyed relationships that I wasnt aware of. I'm making huge progress since the past 5 months knowing the bpd is what's the issues right now. My therapist said I have improved greatly in just these past few months recognizing when I'm striking and splitting black. I have someone that is or was my best friend who was also my favorite person. And hes been seeing a covert narcissist the past two years and I've been seeing him more the past year than the previous year and he pulled a bo contact on me one day after saying I'll be back later on to finish what we started and it qas 5 weeks before I heard from him again and it was hell on earth to live through. That lasted about a week until I blasted him again and now he has distanced himself from me it's been 5 days since we texted and I'm way more at ease about it 5his time. I learned from the first no contact how to make it thru the day without him. He blocked me on texts and made it so I could leave messages but my calls went straight thru to vm. So I'm reflecting and responding instead of reacting out of pure fear. Him setting boundaries made me really see how much of a pain in thw ass I was being. Hes doing the right thing to give space 5o mellow out and I'm learning I cant make him my whole world. I can4 put me being happy or sad all on him just because of my severe fear of abandonment. I react out of fear and when I strike I instantly feel deep remorse and try to apologize and what he really needs is space form me. So I've learned that much. Progress. Painful but its happening. Soon I will be going back to icmp three days a week and hopefully after 4 months I will be able to go into dbt classes. In the meantime my therapist said she lives borderline and she promises me to never reject or turn me away. She wants me to call or email her ans rage and get it out and have her refuse the situation rather than me attacking what family and friends I have left. And theres really only a few of them all together. But I'm going to recover from this. I'm determined. I will get regulated on my emotions. I wasnt always like this. Just been under ungodly amount of stress that is so unfathomable but we are working on this everyday and every night to achieve better impulse control. This isnt anything I'd wish on my worst enemies. Bpd is the most painful of disorders to have. Such fear and self loathing and the suicidal tendencies to just make the constant pain go away is more than I can stand . So you see I just get more under control because I refuse to live thw resting my life in the amount of pain I have been enduring. It's just not an option.

I know I sometimes get upset over small issues, but from reading the DSM V criteria, and books on BPD, I think I have symptoms of it, but don't actually have it. I've read Bipolar and BPD are often misdiagnosed as they have some similarities.

Joseph Rogers the difference between those two though are really different. With BPD (i have it) we can have our moods shift within minutes to hours and with Bipolar you will go days to weeks to even months until your moods change like you could be depressed for weeks and then get maniac for weeks or months and thats the difference.

@@Bvbfangurl4life Thank you for your response. Yes, I understand the two are different, but they still get misdiagnosed. I just think it's safe to get more than one opinion. Even Psychiatrists make mistakes. In this video it was mentioned that being treated for a disorder you've been misdiagnosed with can actually cause more problems. The good thing is DBT is not only for BPD patients. Everyone can use DBT to get better.

I've been educating myself on BPD to more effectively deal with a family member with the disorder. I am no expert although I am starting to feel like one. I know that it is much more common for BPD to be misdiagnosed as bipolar rather than the other way around. And I know that people with BPD are often unable to see that they actually have the disorder and, by the nature of BPD, unable or unwilling to accept it. That's where my family member is stuck. It's not an insult ... I've got PTSD and the way I relate it to my family member is the way I understand it. We both suffered serious trauma but mine came later in life. My family member's trauma came earlier --before it may even be possible to remember. It's not her fault and, unlike bipolar, it's not only treatable, it's completely fixable. Best of luck with your second opinion. I sincerely hope it's a good one. Maybe ask someone who you know loves you, too.
