Another popular request has been a video looking at this career-defining box set for ELP called Fanfare. This box set has been recently reissued after being very hard to find and commanding some very high prices.
Even for someone like me who has all the studio albums apart from 'In The Hot Seat' I still feel this is a great set to have.
It also includes 5CDs of unreleased concerts unique to this box. Another highlight is the 3LP vinyl concert from Italy in 1973. This is also unique to this box.
Also in the box are 2 vinyl singles, hardback book, concert programs and a BluRay DVD containing the Steven Wilson 5.1 surround sound mixes.
The music was been remastered by Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham in 2017 when this box set was first released and sounds superb!

Excellent review Phil. Two things emerge from this. A. ELP were hideously underrated and a reassessment is finally happening. B. There are so many quite recent out of print box sets that are going for ludicrous prices, indicating that there weren't enough of them made in the first place. I hope labels will begin to repress more often. Scalper pricing is ugly and fans are presented with no other option.
Hi Phil, Great review and a great box by a great band. You finally got your hands on a copy, worth every penny of £120. Bye the way the Pocono 72, concert disc, is available as a double coloured Vinyl album released for RSD 2019. As you say ELP are totally under appreciated band, despite what John Peel said about them.
Hi Raymond, great to hear from you! Yes, it took me a while to get this as I dithered for quite a while. Now I have it I am very pleased with it. Thank you for making me aware of it all those weeks ago - phil :)
Great review, I was a big ELP fan growing up in 70s then a long gap before I started appreciating them again years later and basically rediscovered my ELP records again - thankfully I kept them all and had them all deep cleaned not so long ago. Have the box set ordered and looking forward to this having missed out a few years ago with the first run.
Fortunately, I got to see this band twice - once with Powell...but it was a fantastic show. The other time, strangely enough, they opened up for Jethro Tull. THAT show was fantastic too!
Great review as always Phil. I agree with what Chris Wright says about represses. It's always been done with books. I remember their first tour and they appeared at a sold out Brum Town hall. I and a few ex school pals tried to crash it but nooo chance.lol Keep up the great work.
These videos are a really useful guide for me, as they show the box contents and the overall designs. Thanks for your efforts.
Hi Martin, thank you for watching and your kind words. Phil :)
I have the CD box set called "Out of This World 1970-1997" and it is FANTASTIC.
Tarkus on "Live at Pocono" is amazing. Listen to Greg's bass playing with singing in the Mass part of Tarkus. Absolutely awsome.
Hi, thank you for watching. I recent times I am really appreciating the genius that was ELP. Currently I am playing The Piano Concerto from Works. This should be recognised as a major classical work, it really is incredible. It went completely over my head at the time. Phil :)
Perhaps it is because I never heard Love Beach until decades later but to me it is not the disaster that everyone says it is? It seems to follow the route they were taking with Works 2. What do you think ? ( please be kind! ) Phil :)
Hey Phil, new subscriber from Sydney Australia here. Thanks for this video. I think the LP sleeve of "Love Beach" gave that album the bad reputation that it received. You're right, the music on the album isn't that bad in hindsight. I'm prompted to buy this set. I have original vinyl of the 'first era' ELP albums to LB and a smattering on CD. The 5.1 mixes are enough to tempt me. So it's a yes from me. Cheers mate 👍
I bought it on release in 1978 Phil and I don’t think it’s a disaster at all. Apart from the dreadful cover. What WERE they thinking? Works 2 of course is an odds and sods release, a sort of “not the greatest hits”.
I recently bought this box that the fan fan box that I ordered it online from Amazon I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I have been listening to the other this world box set when I listen to almost all the concerts I was absolutely amazed and blown away by how wonderful Keith Emerson was and what an incredible band Emerson Lake and Palmer really were One of my favorite songs done live is lucky man first the acoustic version and then doing a full band version of it but I can’t wait to get into the super deluxe box set I think it might’ve been repressed I’m not sure if I got my first copy or not but I’m looking forward to it.
Thank you 🙏
I picked up a second hand issue of this (2357 of 3000, so I think it’s a first release) recently for a real bargain price last week. It’s incredible value for money.
Another great show Phil.
I have the 5 cd booklet set From The Beginning plus expanded cds of the Sally stuff.
One of my early memories was a friend playing me Live Dates by Wishbone Ash ( bloody marvellous) and Brain Salad Surgery . A life changing experience.
Thank you Phil.
I bought the first edt when it came out and payed under £100 for it. Think i also got a discount on it. A fantastic box it is. Best Bjorn.
Great review. On my wishlist to get
. And you're right Phill you can never have too many versions of Tarkus
So glad they rereleased this set,.
Hate the Vultures who buy up these sets to rip people off.
I Ivo, thank you for watching. I hope you find a copy. It really is good ! Phil :)
Hi Phil- Great video and I was sitting on the fence but no longer- I purchased it due to your excellent overview.
I have everything (standard releases) especially the Japanese minilps which the packaging cannot be beat but the winner with this lovely set was the Italian LP and all the bonus stuff- I love the paper stuff do- with all the sets floating around this year and prices all over the place- this was overall an excellent purchase for the amount of content. My only regret was that they were the only group I did not see in the peak- I saw virtually everybody else but somehow did have the chance to see them!
A couple of tips- a great video in the near future would be a review of your thoughts about the special books that are usually inside the sets and what you think is the best one and what you think makes a perfect book for a fan- could be a very interesting one!
Secondly Phil be sure to treat yourself to the exclusive Japan release of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother before they are all gone- the goodies inside are beautiful but a must have for any prog/rock fan! Keep up the stellar fan...looking forward to the next video BBD!
Hi, I like the idea of doing a a top ten box set books of all time! I might just do that - Phil - I would love to get the Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother special edition, I am still looking for the best place to buy it from. It is already quite expensive. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine probably CDJapan is your best option
Love black moon lp. Its outstanding.
More good stuff Phil. I think you did very well getting this handsome set for the price you did. I agree with everyone here that the CD sleeves are a disappointment. I was interested in what you said regarding the person that preferred to keep any collections all sealed up, a box set is there to be explored and enjoyed. I knew somebody (now sadly passed on) who used to buy two copies of a set, one to enjoy and one a sealed investment copy. Expensive way to do it but it covered both bases I suppose.
Hi Peter, so to hear about your friend and yes that approach would cover both bases but I would rather spend the money on something else. The CD sleeves in this are disappointing but this style is used a lot and the other items make up for it for me anyway! Phil
Fantastic dialog
Brilliant band
Great box set. I’ve also got a copy.
Hi, Thank you for watching and I agree it really is a superb box set - I think Works is my current favorite. Phil
Excellent video. I was bummed when this went OOP. Was very grateful when it was repressed. Found out about the repressing on an ELP Facebook group. It would have been nice if there was a section of the book dedicated to recording info on each album. Also, would have been nice to know what keyboards Keith used for each album. Sadly, I missed out on the Wishbone Ash box set. Did get the Ultimate U.K box set that came out years again(that was also repressed). I also have two of the three King Crimson box sets, and the Heep 50 years box.
Hi, thank you for watching and for your comment I really have become a huge ELP fans in the last few months! Phil :)
Nice Video, Thank you
It's great! Thanks a Lot!! From BRAZIL!!!
Thank you 🙏
Excellent review.
Hi Lucky Man (great name!) thank you for watching and your postive feedback - Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine Keith Emerson's influence made me study classical piano. I can play Tarkus, Trilogy, etc (but obviously never like the great Emerson) Search through my videos and there are a couple of things live (I never dared to upload my versions of ELP, it would be heresy)
the CDs look as though they could have been better.......
bought a trio of ELP Japanese outsized mini LPs ( actually CDs ) with Obis which are something else !
It's a pity that they don't include the one with cosy Powell.
Hi Stephen, thank you for watching. I did think that as well, I guess because it was a technically a different band they decided against it. The Emerson Lake and Powell album is excellent and perhaps we can hope for a separate box set to cover this period? I hope so ! Phil :)
Phil, The first pressing was withdrawn due to legal problems, which were later resolved, hence the "reissue".
Hi, thank you for watching. I had no idea this was the case and thought it had simply sold out. Do you know what the issue was? Thanks Phil
you review all these box sets i never knew existed now im gonna be broke
I was at pocono but only heard.....also..73 msg nyc..77 .4×..2 no orch..86 elpowell 92 stanhope and each tour thru 97/98 ...73 msg .bes show of my life..now?? Im old
I WANT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Phil, Nothing is further from the truth to say there are lots if people who only buy but never listen to the music. I think music for them is like coins or stamps, just a kind of investment. But at least one can look at coins/stamps but only looking at an LP or boxed set and not listening to the mudic? I have no words.
Getting back ti ELP, I have most official releases by them but I have never bought any of their live compilations for one reason: I have yet to find a decent live recording of one of my favorite tracks From The Beginning which came out in 1972. I have seen its live recordings in the later years but not in the 70s when Greg Lake's vocal was still very strong. Perhaps you can help? Thanks as always.
Hi, Music needs to be played but there is much to be enjoyed here as much with your eyes and ears. There is another CD Box set which I have reviewed here which covers some of the early period. Phil
I never bought this as I have all the Cds and Vinyl apart from the live albums, tbh only Milan/Rome record is all I would want and why isn’t this on CD ?
Hi Mike, the Rome album is unique to this set. It should be on CD as not everyone wants the vinyl. I feel the labels would do better with separate CD and Vinyl sets although in the case the vinyl set would have been very heavy and expensive! Phil
Uou didn't mention if the live discs were audience or professionally recorded.
All professionally recorded- just bought the vinyl set as well !
@@NowSpinningMagazine Thanks Phil. They have a history of releasing audience boots in box sets.
Why would they print bar codes on all the CD's?
Good point, I guess everything is set up to always include them!
@@NowSpinningMagazine I don't have many box sets, but none have bar codes.
More like these will be sold separately, fingers crossed!
Wow, the treatment of the CD's is poor. Sorry, would have much preferred they dumped the Vinyl and spent the money on the CD covers. Tarkus without a gatefold?!?! Lame. That said, if you don't already own the Surround mixes, then this set is worth it just for those. I happen to have each of them at the time they were put out, but they seem to have quickly disappeared. I like all the tat and books myself, so that's a win. But they stumbled at the last fence with those CD covers.........
Hi JG, I have to agree, the package is first class and then they took their eye of the ball for the CD covers. I do think that some labels like Cherry Red, Esoteric and Madfish are realising that fans would really like to see a replica gatefold sleeve if there was one on the original vinyl. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Indeed. The sleeves as they are is serviceable, and I guess that's where they draw the line. There's just no way to make them feel premium, especially with a band like ELP, where the sleeve designs are an intrinsic part of the band.
Last weekend I bought one of those cheap "5 albums by" boxes of Fairport Convention for £12. Hilariously, the cheap card inner sleeves are all glossed - which I thought was odd. 😅 But with those sets, you're paying nothing, so you don't grumble.
Of course, the big £50 ELP book just came out, so I may well go with that soon.
I am a huge ELP fan and have all of their material other than this. The poor quality of the CD covers is the reason I did not pull the trigger. I have original pressings of the classic albums on vinyl, so I understand and appreciate the album cover art, especially on Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery, and Welcome Back... It's unfortunate the record company dropped the ball on this.
but cd's sleeves ,are poor : no gatefold, not gimmick cover for brain salad surgery : it's disappointing !
The CD covers are a let down when you consider how much effort was put into the rest of the box. At least it has been repressed, there is still a lot of music in here that is not available elsewhere. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine agreed!!the rest is very superb!!!!!!! i like perfection .
I think that only the 1996 Rhino reissue did the "gimmick" cover for cd
@@JIF882 yes with poster cover !
@@jean-lucpernel2202 The Rhino version didn't come with the poster. The BMG versions did
