  • The late Patrice Wymore Flynn was a great ambassador for Jamaica. She and her husband, Errol Flynn, spent much of their married life together on board their boat and at their base on Navy Island. An actress in her own right, Patrice recounts her somewhat harrowing first experience of arriving in Kingston and travelling across the Blue Mountains to meet Flynn in Port Antonio. In this feature, we see another side of the swashbuckling idol of the movies and the impact he had on their surroundings and in the creation of a popular tourism attraction. I used to swim from the mainland (Port Antonio) to Errol Flynn Island with my Great Love swimming beside me and encouraging me.
Oh youth, where is thy grandeur?

Youth, is waste on the young Dear heart.
I used swim the Ovens to Whale Beach in mine and in the early nineties saw two women waving. One was Diana Spencer I’m pretty certain, and the other may of been her Sister in Law at the the time the Duchess of York. The House must of been very close to the Intersection of Whale beach and Rayner Rd meet or a couple of building blocks North.
I kept mum as the poor bastards get enough prats ruining their day for some sought of pay off; besides if I didn’t keep an eye on the current on my Port and Larboard beam (its safer to swim South in Summer there and if swimming North must stay far to starboard in deep water where the current is weak as it about a kilometre and its the Ocean not a bay for most of it. But in those days I could body surf 6 foot surf literally all day in a pair fins and easily if it was good enough for board riding. As surmised, youth is hormones bravado and folly we are lucky to survive. If only we had it now 😉

I met Errol Flynn walking the street in Port Antonia,. He was walking barefoot and I walked up to him and said hello Errol and he shook my hand and said hello and I walked on and so did he, He loved the anomity in Jamaica he could go anywhere and no one would ask him for Autographs or fuss over him. Sometime later i was at the Royal Mail Wharf in Kingston and I saw his boat Zaca docked at Lyons Wharf. I had a friend with me and we waved at Errol from out Wharf and he waved back. I said to my friend I bet he is going to check in at the Myrtle Bank hotel which was near there. So I said lets go get his autograph. So we set out along Harbour Street and on the way I stopped at a store and brought a little notebook for a shilling and proceeded to the Myrtle Bank Hotel. When we arrived there Errol was at the front desk checking in. I walked up to him and said Errol coudI have your autograph and he took my notebook and autographed it. And I went away happy. I had been successful. I kept that book for years and had the Autograph of Nat King Cole on a page. Errol Flynn had one daughter Arnella with Partice. I will continue the story years later very interesting story,

You lucky guy, I have been a Flynn affeciendo since 1960 when I first purchased ' MYWWW' since then Flynn has more or less dominated my life, I read, or purchase all books about him, he has sustained me throughout my life with his attitude to life, thanks Errol for opening my eyes to the sheer futility if it all, as John Masefield wrote, 'I must go down to the sea again. to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gulls way and the whales way where the wind's like a whetted knife, And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover, and a QUIET SLEEP AND A SWEET DREAM WHEN THE LONG TRICK'S OVER, Take note the long trick, ' cos that is all it is...

I met Mrs. Flynn once when I was little, that was a bit b4 she died. My dad worked for her so that’s how I met her. I walked out in her front yard and I saw her huge dog, when I saw him my eyes widened at how big he was and I just slowly backed up and then ran when I realized he wasn’t going to chase me. My dad said the day she died there were 2 rainbows in the sky and he took a picture of it. Mrs. Flynn also gave my dad a film she was in called She’s back on Broadway. On the day I met her she never once spoke but I could tell she was a wise lady😊

That's a great story! Did you get Nat King Cole's autograph because they both made a picture together,
"Istanbul" around 1957, which I saw then?

Given their mutual love of Jamaica, I don’t understand why they aren’t buried in Port Antonio versus Forest Lawn.
    Lovely lady, Patrice Wymore Flynn.

I‘ve heard one of his daughters saying that Flynn wanted to be buried in Jamaica, but his wife refused to do that.

They were still legally married although separated for at least two years when he died, and for reasons never explained, she decided to bury him in Forest Lawn when he specifically didn't want to be buried there. Other family members knew that too. He had no grave marker at all for many years, until his daughters put one there. Some of this may have been because his estate wasn't settled for at least 14 years because there were creditors on two continents, the IRS, and estate contests by heirs. That would have left the Jamaican property in question at the time of his death, too.

Pat Wymore Flynn was from the Midwest of the U.S. but displays a "continental" accent in this video. That was the accent of some Brit expats and upper crust of the Northeastern U.S. at the time. Perhaps she had voice training that altered her accent and pronunciation, or else it was living around so many Brit expats and descendants in Jamaica during the latter part of her life. It couldn't have come from living with Errol, since his accent was different and they only lived together 7 years at max.

She had a daughter with Flynn, Arnella, who predeceased her mother, but Arnella had a son, Luke, that still lives there and is the heir since Flynn's other two surviving daughters from his second wife, Nora, did not inherit the Jamaican estate.
