    My Aunt Jane and her partner “Tootie” met when playing softball in 1948 in Fox Park in St. Louis MO. and were together until separated by death.
    Their stories about being lesbian in the 1950’s were fabulous!

      @@QueerCollective truly. Aunt Jane & Tootie were very closeted, butch/femme dynamic, their bedroom was set up with twin beds (like a mid century sitcom), and I never realized they were lesbian until I came out to my parents. I miss them.
      I have a suspicion my Aunt Jane might have been on the trans spectrum as she preferred to be called Lee, did all the masculine stuff (sports woodworking, fishing, lawn work, etc) and hated bras. Aunt Jane would hire women to custom make some kind of bra like contraption. Maybe it was a rudimentary binder.🤷🏻‍♂️

    Appreciate the video! This is not an "entire" history, though. This goes over many issues in Western lesbian history, true, and this part is great. But it leaves out much of Indian, east Asian, south east Asian, every part of Africa and South America, Polynesian and Eastern European lesbian history.
    We often consider all of history to be just Western, or only through a Western lense. So the title is a bit misleading!
    Thanks, as always, for the research and the great video ❤
    Also, would appreciate deletion of the hate speech in the comments!

    Wow! Thank you for sharing such an important part of our history! I learned so much! I'm Puerto Rican and in school they barely talked about our Taino culture, I didn't even know how inclusive it was. Growing up I would hear how unnatural homosexuality was but in reality our culture was so accepting and inclusive!

    • @QueerCollective
      @QueerCollective  Год назад +11

      Thanks so much for listening! I (Karbon) was also taught that homosexuality was bad and the culture of Colombia, at least at the time, heavily discriminated against queer people. Makes me sad to know the pre-colonial culture was so inclusive but it’s also why we have to advocate for more inclusivity in cultures outside of the western world.

    Theres a real reason to start questioning why we still teach patriarchal mysognistic religion that keeps threatening our society that has a short memory of the atrocities caused by it being in politics and stil makes life a living hell for women and gay men around the world . We should be making the religion atkeast reform to modern day if not get rid entirely.

    The word “queer” is loaded with discrimination and violence. It cannot be reclaimed. There is no such “non-binary.” Having said that, I appreciate your looking back in history. Sappho composed poetry ~600 BCE.

      I wish I could agree with you except for one thing. If we can reclaim the Pink Triangle from Post Wienmar Germany, specially the Nazi Party then there is no way Queer is off the table.

    • @MadameCorgi
      @MadameCorgi 2 месяца назад

      so is the word 'gay' for many gen z people. it's useful to have a non-cluncky umbrella term for everyone. Your opinion on non-binary has no power or relevance , they exist regardless of what you think

    • @celisewillis
      @celisewillis 2 месяца назад +1

      "Queer" has already been reclaimed. If you don't want to use it, that's fine.
      Non binary people exist. Indigenous cultures (including pre-judeo-Christian white cultures) all included multiple genders for millennia. It was only with the advent of those religions that we see a strict enforcement of just two categories.

    • @morindahoelzle559
      @morindahoelzle559 Месяц назад +1

      YOU cannot reclaim it. But others can, because they haven't limited themselves to defining themselves by others perspective of them, or language. Non-binary is a new term, and therefore it does exist.

    • @wesleybarrett9502
      @wesleybarrett9502 Месяц назад

      @celisewillis I do understand what you meant by religious but don't get it twisted. It was not just religion. With there being many different faults with some practices of historical Paganism at least there was a concept of balancing the masculine and feminine. They just had different Gender Norms for the time. Also those in between always existed but the term "non-binary" is a newer term. They were in essence a completely different gender that was the in between gender.
