  • Our benchmark and review of the AMD R7 2700 and R7 2700X focuses most on game streaming (for Twitch/RUclips) and multitasking, with gaming benchmarks also included.

    Our AMD R7 2700X vs. i7-8700K testing mostly focuses on gaming and Blender rendering/benchmarks, but we also dive into livestreaming with Twitch or RUclips. The idea is to stress-test multitasking in realistic use case, hopefully finding the best CPU for streaming in the process. We also spend time overclocking the new AMD R7 2700X CPU, which gives us time to talk about memory overclocking and the stability of frequencies beyond 3600MHz cold boot on the R7 2700X. Most importantly, we built a volt-frequency table for the lowest stable voltage that 4.0GHz can be maintained on both the 1700 and 2700X, providing a unique, important look at one of the only major differences with Ryzen 2 vs. Ryzen 1.
    We previously benchmarked the AMD R7 1700 vs. 7700K for live streaming, but the 2700X changes things a bit -- primarily with higher frequency and XFR2.

      Quick question....on your charts where the 2700X was overclocked to 4.2GHz, were you using 3200 DOCP settings for memory or what was the memory at? Were the memory settings for the 4.2GHz results different than what you used for the stock results? What memory settings were you using for the 8700K stock and overclocked runs?
      Great review and kudos to you for having the integrity and respect for other reviewers to wait for launch day to post even though you didn't have to.

      Can you confirm whether or not you've updated with the Latest Spectre patch (the April one)? A couple of websites are showing apparent huge hits for intel with it. Thanks!

      I guessed 8700K to the right (correct)
      But then you showed the first slide of streaming numbers and I was like, arghhh. I was soo wrong.
      Then I was ohh, I was right, 8700K was just better for the player.
      Confidence, disappointment and success in a 2-3 minute. tnx gn :p

      Really that's interesting because in Hardware Unboxed video Steve mentioned those metrics when he overclocked his chips. While HB Steve doesn't go into as much detail on voltage and more in depth performance numbers the amount of benchmarks in his videos are unrivaled.

      Gamers Nexus, please split up your charts for vendor and scenario subdivisions, it will make it much easier to read. Maybe 2x2 grid for each scenario and vendor.
      Ryzen stock and OC baseline /// Intel Stock and OC baseline
      ----
      Ryzen stock and OC streaming /// Instel Stock and OC streaming
      I get you have your charts sorted by performance numbers but we're searching for product in the chart, not for a number. So sort by product when applicable plsss.
      TL;DR: Data is nice, pls make it easier to read.

    You know, with only a $30 dollar difference, the better cooler, and the efficiency gains (with negligible performance loss) from not overclocking, the 2700X is a lot more compelling than the 1700X/1800X had been.

    • @LiLBitsDK
      @LiLBitsDK 6 лет назад +8

      yeah it autoboosts all cores to 4GHz and single/dual core to 4.3GHz that should be enough for most and it will run way WAY more efficient then the 1x00 series (as long as you have decent cooling of course but who doesn't)

    Steve I love your channel and applaud all the work you’ve done over the years. And I know this is an older video but I feel the need to critique the addition of a cpu into the title that you did not intend to fully test.
    Today I needed to help a friend spec out an upgrade for a pc with a 2700 non x and without the power consumption numbers I am at a bit of a loss. They are already set on a 3080 and as that runs a 320-340 watt load, even a difference of 20-40 watts for the cpu could mean the difference of being in spec or out of spec!
    I may even need to start counting the load of the fans, motherboard, and leds at this rate!

    Gamers Nexus Hey why didnt you test to reduce the Latency to 3466 CL14 or 3600 CL14?
    I had no problems with 14nm Zen & a B-Die Kit there...
    That shows massive gains for me even compared to 3600 CL16!
    Would have been cool to see more charts with the 2700 stock in and a power consumtion chart with 4,0 @ 1,1XX V.

    As someone who takes no sides it's clear where each brand has it's strengths and that despite differences in approach to how the brand's manufacture their respective CPUs both brand's have shown they can create highly compelling options to suit consumer needs at various price points, Personally I feel like despite the recent jumps in multicore utilisation/performance for mainstream users/gamers, much older Intel hardware can still keep up, the only real improvement that's been noticeable over the past 7 years has been the reduction in power consumption at idle/load and the reduction in gear dissipation requirements, it'll be another generation or two from AMD & Intel before I consider purchasing newer hardware, after my underwhelming experience with my i5 6600k when compared with a similarly priced dual Xeon HP Z600 I want to see real gains in how CPUs not just perform but how that performance is actually utilised by software, Thanks for such a detailed Review GN, very well presented and produced, A Gold Standard for Product Reviews

      peter geary My main rig ran a 1600x, and I bought everything new for it. Two months of owning it, my water cooler died and killed it all.
      Stuck with my Z600. Which I have to say is surprisingly good. Dual 5650s. MUCH prefer my Ryzen, obviously, but those old Xeons are great.
      Cool to see another Z600 owner.

    • @LND3947
      @LND3947 6 лет назад +1

      SquaficleDude That's really unfortunate, my view on Watercooling is only use it if you can risk losing your system if it leaks/fails, glad to see another Z600 owner enjoying the benefits that much older hardware can still bring despite it's age and older process size, you may be interested to know that if you use Windows as your OS that it's possible to tweak the processor clock speed and either increase performance or reduce power consumption/temps or do both if you've got a really good pair of xeons (Like I seem to have), there's software called 'SetFSB' or you can use 'Clockgen' I recommend looking into it, even if it's just a small gain

    • @SquaficleDude
      @SquaficleDude 6 лет назад +1

      peter geary I spent literal days looking up how to get more performance, between BIOS mods, etc. This is great to know. 5650s clock to nearly 5ghz, and it's a crime that they're locked at 2.6, lol.
      There's aftermarket coolers for the boards and the air flow is pretty good. Love the RAM cooling. I'll check out the software. Even a 100mhz boost helps, especially with 12 cores.
      Agreed on water cooling. Never again unless it's an Intel chip, or the FX 8350 I have laying around. Not worth it on Ryzen. Their temps run low, and now with Zen+ efficiency, 4ghz is a breeze on air.
      Oh, if I mess up, will I ruin the computer or would restarting reset the clocks? And how do I find the PLL on this thing? C2 motherboard.

    • @LND3947
      @LND3947 6 лет назад +1

      SquaficleDude it's all Windows based and only activates when running the program, so I have it setup to run at start-up, easy to undo, and if it locks up when changing settings just restart and it's undone, I recommend not turning on auto start-up/run on start-up until you've got a stable overclock/undervolt

    Gonna nerd out a bit and say I think you do the best motion graphics for graphs i've seen on YT. The extra animations, highlighting areas being talked about and 'count-down bars' help things stay visually interesting and it really helps add a feeling of quality.
    Oh, and the info is good too ;)

    Great video. In a weird way I like that the X variants push the chips so well that you aren't leaving much performance on the table.

    I just upgrade my computer from the 1700 to the 2700 (both non-X versions). Doing the upgrade allowed me to use 3200MHz memory instead of the 2400 MHz it was running at with the 1700 and I got an insane speed increase in Vegas Studio 14 Platinum. Before the upgrade it took 4 to 5 times the lenght of the video to render in 4K. So a 1 hour video would take about 4 hours to render sometimes more. I just rendered my first video with the new config, and it took 25 minutes to render a 16 minutes video so about 1.6X times the lenght of the video. I am blown away! I was expecting a 11% speed upgrade but the combination of ram now able to run at full speed and the 200 MHz extra cpu speed from 3.8 GHz to 4 GHz with both overclocks, it looks like I doubled performance in video rendering... that is insane!

    This is amazing news for people like me that dont overclock. Im sure im in the majority. Intel is still better for me in some ways because i dont stream as much BUT i think im going amd because ill be able to keep my mobo till 2020+ if i remember correctly and that saves like 300 dollars

      Curious Wars You really gonna upgrade CPUs within 2 years though? I could care less about "until 2020" at this point, it's right around the corner.

    • @UchihaSumairu
      @UchihaSumairu 6 лет назад +1

      Why wouldn't I? I use my computer for home and business and have a need for the computer power for more than just games. On top of that ryzen 2 (not 1.5) will likely be MUCH more powerful considering the huge shrink and IPC increases. I think you are too used to intels ownership of the market over the last 10ish years to remember that before they were dominating 30%+ improvements over each generation were quite common and with infinity fabric making those types of improvements possible again with a shrink it's very possible we would see them. 7nm will likely make 12-16 core the new "standard" at the very least and thats ignoring the ipc gains.
      All speculation of course but I change processors almost every year. Not everyone has the same needs :)

    • @Malus1531
      @Malus1531 6 лет назад +2

      Curious Wars Fair enough, I do expect Zen 2 to bring large gains. Not sure 12-16 cores is at all useful for mainstream though, we're just barely reaching a point where most software can use more than 4. In games 8-core Ryzen probably won't be fully utilized for years, let alone 12-16. Lets face it the only reason AMD offers tons of cores isn't because most people need it, it's because it's all they can offer since they are always behind in clocks & IPC. That might not be the case for Zen 2 though.

      I have been both AMD and Intel at this moment i am on an OC monster of a 2600k..for games it still gives more than i need.( running a 980Ti )..intels small baby step improvements really kept me on this generation of chips saw no need to change...in the mean time i had various Amd pc's in the home for various tasks and to be honest was let down by AMD very lackluster ability to compete with Intel...BUT now...i waited for the second of Ryzen and so glad i did AMD truly has put Intel on the trailer and can not wait too build a new system once GPU's become sane....

      Noobish ...because RAM totally isn't upgradable, right? And, he totally couldn't upgrade the CPU first then the motherboard later if he wanted to, huh?

    From seeing the 8700k's performance on the viewer-side dip to Medium encoding, it can show how extra applications like Spotify or a web browser can further hurt performance unless it is JUST streaming that is being performed (most streamers have music in background or something else going on to make the stream more entertaining)

    Great review, i prefer that you used 'retail' cpus instead of samples directly from the manufacture.
    Because it gave you more time for troubleshooting and testing but also to prevent eventual binning and golden samples.

    Hit me up if anyone wants to see this put through 3D CAD and Keyshot, or wait for the 2800 family

    • @mezmerya5130
      @mezmerya5130 6 лет назад

      cad uses multithreading only for 2d rendering and ui. thus top intel cpus are better, same fo photoshop.
      it's good for video rendering though

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D 6 лет назад +4

      I think there will be a 2800, but they're holding off until Intel responds

    • @williamforbes6919
      @williamforbes6919 6 лет назад +2

      mezmery a He mentioned Keyshot by name, which is a CPU only renderer, and is very multi threaded. Single core performance won't make as much of a difference during modeling as the quantity of ram and the GPU anyways, so for this question it is almost always more cores.
      Also, if he is doing and CFD or stress analysis, the more cores will make a massive difference.

    • @TheEchelon
