I love how these become more of archetypes of the occult approach "this is a path/field of several paths I resonate with" more than an identity-based "this is what I am"

Ok, so I literally clicked on the thumbnail out of shock when it popped up on my home page, hahaha. And of course you would be the person to produce a “what type of witch are you” video that’s actually watchable. I really enjoyed the framing around process and approaches to analysis- super fun, thank you. I don’t even mind that youtube’s recommendations are probably about to repopulate my screen with a hundred banal videos on this topic that I will once more have to flag as unwanted content. And since you asked: I'm going to have to go with a combination of Scholar/Researcher and Realist Conjurer :P

Yay! A "Witch Types" video that is actually thoughtful and thought-provoking. Leave it to Benebel Wen. I'd say I'm a hybrid of Scholar/Researcher and Realist Conjurer. I definitely read the heck out of everything I can, and I always prefer scholarly and primary sources. I also pull info from many different kinds of sources. I don't get all my witchcraft info just from books specifically about witchcraft, but also from books about art, culture, history, cooking, gardening, etc. And I definitely mix and match and improvise whatever works for my needs.
Your remarks about Witchcore Enthusiasts and the magic of aesthetics and its similarity to fengshui struck a chord with me. I've always loved the aesthetics of witchery and occultism, but I've hesitated to let myself go with it because I feel like it's so "on-brand" these days, and that bothers me. I often feel like fashionable popularity saps the meaningful value out of a thing. But maybe that's not true at all. I may have to wander down that path for a bit.
Folk Healer is not like me because although I do grow my own herbs for magical purposes and am very plugged into my physical and natural surroundings, I don't follow a practice of healing or herbal magic per se. I'm much more inside my head. But possibly Reconstructionist Pagan is the least like me, despite my historical and cultural research, because I don't feel any impulse to reconstruct the past. Intellectually, I don't think it's possible to do so. But again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should explore that area - although being of a multicultural heritage myself, I'd have to reconstruct quite a number of traditions, and any practice based on that might end up looking Realist Conjurer anyway.

I knew your take on this kind of video would be interesting, but wow... I recently set my spiritual and magical frameworks out in writing, so i'd have something to share with potential clients in my sound work to explain the contexts of the work. This is what i drafted:
"I would consider myself a pragmatically spiritual person - to me, if a spiritual practice works, it’s worth keeping. I don’t necessarily need a scientific explanation of why or how it works, though i do appreciate one. Some of what works for me doesn’t seem to make much sense, scientifically. Some of it has been thoroughly studied and corroborated in peer-reviewed academic contexts. All of it feels right to my gut, instincts and intuition".
So yeah, Realist Conjurer seems to be my thing, with Scholar/Researcher in supporting role.
It's just as fascinating to me to consider which aspect feels furthest away for me - the Witchcore Enthusiast. That feels like a big invitation to reflect on why that is (trauma related to being looked at) and how gentle engagement with that aspect could be a path towards more emotional healing and integration. I also love your suggestion to consciously cultivate relationship with each aspect in turn.
Thank you for this awesome video, which is more than "a little bit instructive" ;)

Fascinating 🌟🙏🏼🌟 I start with whatever I’m curious about, and learn, practice and play for a bit. Then I tend to move on to another curiosity to see how I’m able to work with that medium. I’m in the curious student phase… but don’t identify with “Witch”, likely due to family history in Salem, MA (both maternal and paternal) were living together with the insanity of friends and neighbors being called out as “witches” for being human beings with knowledge or property or sickness. My ancestors were very helpful and advocates for the accused. ✨🙏🏼✨ I’m very grateful to know this.

Thanks for this. It got me to thinking. To be honest I don't self identify as a witch, but back in the college days I went through an initiation ceremony to form a sort of coven. It was led by a woman from Iran with Turkic/Mongol features, and my friend who taught me some of his 'gongfu' participated. I fuse mundane reality with knowledge acquired from research and memories of past experiences as a member of my own peculiar sort of 'jianghu' Now you're a (digital) part of that 'jianghu' too. So I suppose I fall into the "realist conjurer." category, and I do my research. I am not indulging in escapist fantasy. I think I have a fairly firm grip on reality. Everything comes together in the here and now, so it's important to maintain situational awareness. We are all born of that web (or "matrix" if you will...) of karmic interactions that includes all life on this planet, human interactions, human history, wars and conquests, migrations of peoples, exchanges of ideas and technologies, and the world of trade and commerce. To me that "matrix" is Wusheng Laomu (Wujimu), the mother of the myriad things, the interconnected web of conditioned phenomena. And prajñāpāramītā is the mother of all buddhas. I don't really believe in "reincarnation" or an afterlife. There is no afterlife, only LIFE! And think about how many ancestors you have. You have two parents, four grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great great grandparents, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024... That's a lot of human karmic interactions.

I'm naturally a Scholar/Researcher, I think. My practices heavily involve research and due to lack of terminology to describe my personal practice I've adopted the term occult scholar with an emphasis in cartomancy.
My direct opposite might be Witchcore Enthusiast, although I have specific objects for practice, like crystals - it doesn't necessarily dictate my aesthetic.
To your list, I might have considered adding something along the lines of "Social Practitioner". While all types could contain both social or antisocial forms of expression, the social practitioner is specifically interested in group practice.

Going by what you’ve put forth here, that would very much make me the realist conjured because I’m very much a chaos magician. I am deeply inspired by Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto as well as bits and pieces of many other things. I am thirty years old now and discovered how to manipulate and cultivate Qi purely by “coincidence” one day when I was fourteen and have used energy programming for about half of my life. It was only within the last year, however, that I began to classify myself as a witch/wizard/sorcerer.
Shinto doesn’t really recognize any magical practices like witchcraft, but many buddhist monks and Shinto priests use fu for many many purposes. The prevalence of Fu in pretty much any culture that has influence from China is the main reason I bought your book to learn! That said I’m also developing personal practices around reverence of Japanese Tengu and the stories of their magic, as well as the lore of the Legend of Zelda video game series since it carries many influences from Shinto and Buddhism and is also very magical. It probably helps that I’ve had something akin to last life memories from the world the series is set in.
The archetype I’m least like? Probably kitchen witch, but my ADHD has me so far behind of household chores that I don’t thing I can realistically dive into that yet.
I’d have to say I’m a bit connected with the witchy aesthetic type too, but in my own weird way. For example, I shave my head and wear Chinese Buddhist robes for part of my practice because I am so heavily inspired by Shaolin warrior monks.

That makes me edge on academic witch too as I love to read psychology texts. I’m least of all a Reconstructionist as I don’t have a family history or ancestors to base my practice from.

I love this system and your validation of the roles of each of these five types in the community. I personally have always identified as a folk healer and on,y in recent years embraced the idea of this being “witchcraft.” I am also a natural scholar and LOVE seeking knowledge from all sources I can access (which is why I value your analytical approach to your videos and books). I am least a Witchcore identity because I am a very private person regarding my personal practices, though living and working at home has pushed me to explore more how my personal space reflects my own needs and identify. So that outward evolution is happening whether I acknowledge it or not. Thank you for this thought provoking little video!

I know i am one, and Kundalini yoga/Tummo is my main area of focus at the moment. Then again I definitely subscribe on a regular basis to all of the Five though! @@BenebellWen What about Energy Worker Witch? I'm just thinking about the number of "witchy" type people I know who also got certified in Reiki or some other Eastern Energy Work (I've been obsessed with QiGong myself, the deeper reasons behind the movements and the energy they generate, to the Golden Needle technique of using energy needles instead of real ones for a treatment, and the deeper Taoist Mysteries tied into the practice. But it kinda goes hand in hand with being an acupuncturist. 🤓) Personally I've dabbled in each of these categories, and the 6th Energy one as well, but my personal practice is more of a mishmash of the 6 paths. How am i all of these?1? It's very fluid for me. mostly Im trying to connect with my ancestors and remember the Andean Cosmology that has been lost due to historical oppresion. My research jumps from western european tarot kaballah and Chakana symbology, buen vivir quero practices. Its interesting to find the similarities and I believe that in the end it will turn me into a realist conjurer, because I find it so easy to connect the traditions that i learn, specially because in the end in the andean cosmology there are no wrong religions, they all are true. this is the beggining of the journey. It does sometimes bothersme because theres very little information out their regarding Andean Cosmology, and I find myself sometimes being bitter about it because of where I live, the best way to learn has been through people who are not originally from that culture, but were able to go to those places learn about it, take it home and start their own practices. and share it with their communities at home. at the same time im grateful that they were able to go there and learn without being looked down. And a big part of andean cosmology is to give that information freely and my gatekeeping tendencies comes from the western/european mindset that im trying to get past.

Definitely a WItchcore Enthusiast with some Realist Conjuror. These remind me of Frater U:.D:.'s Models of Magic with a different twist. Scholar/Researcher was my previous practice - I would spend hours with my nose in the books learning Hermetic Qabalistic incantations and symbolism and then perform said rituals. Witchcore Enthusiast calls to me because I have more wands, athames, and tarot decks then I do clothes. Not to mention the things I make and imbue with my creative energy.
I would add two other "witch" types to this list for fun: the Fool or Trickster Witch and the Pop Culture Witch.
The Fool Witch, much like the old chaos magicians, would use laughter as their baseline for banishing. Think of Discordianism, where art and nonsense are a huge part of their practice. Every one can be Pope if they just decide! And don't forget the Fnords. I believe the Cult of the Subgenious was a huge influence on Discordianism.
The Pop Culture Witch creates their fanfictions as pathworkings, and uses reading comic books or manga and watching movies and animes as a form of understanding their mythologies. Think of a polytheist but with pop culture gods. I believe the first incarnation of this was in the early days of the Illuminates of Thanateros. Taylor Ellwood has written a handful of books on his practices and philosophies of Pop Culture Magic. Kenneth Grant, a former student of Aleister Crowley, took a liking to H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos and created an entire magical organization around eldritch sorcery. Phil Hine has a chapbook called the Pseudonomicon dedicated to Lovecraftian elements of sorcery.

What if I do all of those things at the same time 🥲
I study folk from a historical perspective and apply or reconstruct those practices but at the same time I also do things from a very intuitive based approach. Spirit work herbalism all that stuff. I also every once in a while do enjoy the aesthetic side of it all too. I just don't know, I feel I do a little bit of all of it. Most of the time I just call myself an "electic hedge witch" knowing that it doesn't quiet capture the complexity of what I'm actually doing.

This was very interesting! I'm probably equal parts folk healer and scholar and the most unlike me would be witch core enthusiast. The thought of leaning into that makes me nervous, but I'm curious as to where it will lead.

I don’t really fit into any of your categories. My path is Hellenic Paganism but I’m *not* a Hellenic Reconstructionist. It doesn’t make sense to me to attempt to worship the same way the ancient Greeks (Hellenes) did when I am an African American woman living in the 21st century. I adapt practices that I determine have a relevant and/or important reason to be included in a ritual or my devotional practice. This approach is antithetical to the ancient Hellenics’ practice of orthopraxy. I am a nerd, I just feel there needs to be a reason for a practice beyond "That’s how they used to do it." I have always had an interest in the natural world in relation to witchcraft, particularly crystals and stones, herbs, essential oils, candles, etc. I definitely prefer Low magick to High but I realize I could end up delving into theurgy. I"d love an herb garden but I have a black thumb, so no. I have an affinity for tarot and want to know precisely how and why it’s effective. I’m currently reading a book on Huna (Hawaiian spirituality/psychology) and believe I’m on the right track. The author of the book has suggested exploring the I Ching as well, so I will look into this as well. Like many, I didn’t become a witch, I already was one but didn’t know it. I was one of the people who read _The Mists of Avalon_ and experienced an intense, profound feeling of homecoming when I read about the Old Religion practiced by Morgana. I had no idea people actually worshipped in this way that resonate with my soul and that there was a name for the practice. I grew up in the Southeast where there seems to be a Christian church on every corner. Even if you’re not raised a Christian, you are given the impression you _should_ be. It took a year of research (this is before the age of personal computers and the internet), but I finally found out what "the Old Religion” was. I have to admit seeing the word “witchcraft’ freaked me out. It freaked me out so much I abandoned my research for close to a year. When I got over my shock and fear, I threw myself into learning more. As it often happens, once I decided to learn about the religion, I found resources easily. I seemed to meet a pagan a day. This was when Wicca initially took off and new books about it came out regularly. It took me a while to realize I am Pagan, but not a Wiccan. Then there were the something frustrating months of researching and meditating to determine just what kind of Pagan I was. In hindsight, my affinity for the Greek Pantheon and love of Greek myths should have been the first and only clue I needed to investigate the Hellenic Pantheon. I thought I was settled on my path, but you know what they say:"If you want to make the gods laugh, tell them your life plans." A few years ago I attended a Health and Healing Faire and was delighted to see an older African American couple there}. I spoke to the woman for a short while and during the conversation I mentioning that I honored the Hellenic pantheon. She seemed a ]little upset by this. She insisted that I had ties to African deities and insisted I research them. I didn’t take her too seriously because I honestly thought I had just offended her sensibilities. About a month later {two separate, (White) mediums told me my father’s family has long, deep ties to Yemaya and that She wants to renew them. (My father’s current family are very devout Christians so I’d never hear this from them. My father is an Atheist. I had previously never been even remotely interested in traditional African religions (“thanks so much Hollywood for your warped, incorrect portrayals of Voodoo and Vodun. 😡) until I saw a Kickstarter campaign for an artist who wanted to create an authentic, respectful tarot deck based on a variety of the religions of the African Diaspora. The images were not only breathtaking. I found them literally compelling. I felt drawn to learn more about them. I;m still in the beginning stages, but I was blown away to discover Yoruba mythology and theology are almost identical to my base beliefs about religion in general, based on my personal gnosis from studying and meditating on Greek theology (beyond.the surface interpretations). I now have a statue of the beautiful Yemaya (as a mermaid) next to my statue of my beloved Dionysos.

Hmmm….So as a Tibetan Nyingma Buddhist practitioner who reads tarot and is now also deeply entrenched in studying Hermeticism and Western occult practices, I can see how I might fall into all 5 categories simultaneously. Especially now that I’m using your decks, day planner, two separate books of maps, and the principles behind the 22 weeks with the SKT, I think the chaos magician aspect is well represented. Within the Tibetan tradition there are DEFINITELY aspects of folk healer, pagan reconstruction, & witch (hard)core. Anyone who attempts to learn Tibetan astrology and integrate it into their practice is going to have to turn into a research scholar in the process, and the Rime movement in Tibetan Buddhism has created a lot of realist conjurers among us. Well done, Benebell! 🙌❤️🙏

I have a lot of the scholar & researcher type in me. Which means I have some pagan reconstructionist practices as well. I am interested in learning about both folk magic and ceremonial flavors of magic to the point where I don't know if I can define myself as one or the other. I use both approaches depending on the situation and context. I tend to have the "grey path" idea about these things and don't particularly like to be constrained by too many dogmatic dichotomies, there is a place for rules sometimes and ethics but its not a huge focus for me. People like to differentiate "high and low" magic or "black and white" magical practices. I tend to find these dichotomies unhelpful personally as they rely heavily on cultural context and taboos. Those labels say more about the societies, groups and organizations, personalities within those developed systems than they do about the actual reality of all of this stuff in my opinion.

Some of each. I practise Love and Service blended with Devotion. Although I don't identify as Hindu, I do work with each of the traditional Hindu paths: of action; of knowledge; of meditation (weakest link); and of loving devotion to personal 'gods'.

Folk witch, not healer here. I was a healer and hated it. But I am of the land here. I can hear the crow and know where bear is. I can watch the river and know if a storm is coming. I can feel the sap rising in the trees and know it is time to tap, or taste the air and know it is time to get the wood in for the winter. So I call myself a folk witch, but not a healer. Healing people sucks, most fight you every step of the way.
