I live in Florida and I went to some outside Restaurants/Bars and seen this hanging up even by the garbage cans works very well👍
No it doesn't
Ive done this in WA state to get rid of fruit flies and it works! The old vinegar or wine in a ramekin with a drop or two of dish soap covered with plastic wrap with a few holes in it does nothing more than draw them in and drown them. I taped a plastic snack sized baggie with shiny pennies and water to my Eastern facing window and no more fruit flies! Worked fantastic!

Tip: you have to put it in a spot where the bag gets direct sunlight. That way the refracted light scares the flies away

I first saw this being used when I lived on the beach in Florida. People swear by it. (They normally just used ones penny)

I live in the southeast and I have never heard of this. An old trick we southerners use is hiring pest control professionals to keep insects under control. I thought I’d share that life hack with y’all.

my neighbor told me about it 20 years ago when i first moved in this house and i never did it, but now that it just popped up in my feed and is fresh on my mind, i will give it a try to see if she knows what shes talking about. she also said something about red tags doing the same thing. she has them all around her house and seems like it makes all the flies come over here for the last 20 years lol. should have tried it way before now but better late than never.

You're wasting your time
You mentioned flies and wasps and Pennie’s and peppermint. To get rid of rodents moisten cotton balls with essential oil peppermint essential oil and placing them under cabinets and around the house will get rid of them without having to deal with carcasses. In my home, they moved out within 24 hours. 👍

It really works well! I have been using this trick for years at home and while camping! My porch is very big so I put out a couple gallon size water bags and it works great to keep the flies away. It doesn’t seem to work all that well for the wasps and hornets though. I sometimes put a folded piece of foil in the bag too. Pesky flies!

When they are just a bag with water and a coin or two, not all twisty tied I don’t notice them at all! I could see them being ugly if all over the place though. I am very close to a river and large lake which makes the black flies worse I think
My mom told me this is what the older people did but she did not know how it worked. Hope it works for gnats also.

I made a wind chime and used 2 old CDs glued together (shiny side out) as the wind catcher at the bottom, and hung it from my upstairs balcony. The wind chime worked great After about a month the elderly neighbor across sent her husband to invite me over. She hated the chime because every afternoon the CDs projected flashing rainbow prisms all over her front room where she was restricted to a bed. She wasn't kidding. While we talked, prisms flashed across her curtains.
WOW! My sister was married to a pig farmer and they had flies but they never did THIS. They used good old fashioned fly sticky paper strips. 🤷

How do you do this with aluminum foil? Do you simply hand a sheet of foil? No pennies? Do you crumple it?
Idk, while I’ve seen it, it doesn’t seem like it would work unless you crumble the aluminum foil into a ball, which would help give it have a much wider area of effect. And the thing with the Pennie’s, is that it’s really only in a couple spots, with very minor differences in the angle.
I love all natural things this is why my go to is plastic bags

A friend of mine tried this at a restaurant she manages and it did NOTHING. Flies even landed on the bags!
I've seen this done with pesos in Mexico years ago. The shinier the better.

nope, that's trying to handle a problem after the fact, eliminate what is causing the flies, keep your outdoor space clean of any food, that means sealing and emptying garbage cans enough and occasionally cleaning 'em, If you have a pet, clean up their waste, etc.
Flies will fly in through any open door or window. Nothing to do with food or cleanliness….
I did this right outside my front door this summera and it works great. Kept the flies out of my home.

So how do you use foil?
Wad up about four aluminum balls (shiny side out as much as possible) and put in water filled bag, though for recycling sake I like just hanging shiny old CDs (that can also repel birds along with flies I've read).
Years ago I went into a cake store in Downey California and I saw that hanging above the door and asked the owner why is that up there and she asked me if I saw any flies and I said no and she said don't you find that odd there's cakes everywhere and not a single fly and the door is opened? I had to admit it was working perfectly not a single fly in the place and lots of cakes to land on.

We have one hanging out on our patio. My daughter made it and hung it. The bag has been up several years through out the year. Does it work to keep flies away. Yes and no.

Pennies stopped using copper in early 1980’s….the key is to use copper pennies…not the new ones with zinc alloy

At ten years old he may have a bladder or kidney problem and that is the closest spot to relieve himself. Or you are not taking him out enough and since he can't hold it as well goes to a spot that is convenient and easy to clean ( yes, they can know that.)
So:
1.Take your dog out every couple hours ( or more often.)
2. Make a vet appointment soon. (Very important!!)
3. Clean the spot regularly with regular cleaning stuff then spray it with odor neutralizing spray which you can get on a pet supply store, online or at the vet. There are plenty of homemade solutions you can look at online also.
