Released April last year, this printer shows a lot of promise. Good print quality, fast First page out, but it has a couple shortfalls which can mostly be forgiven.

I have had the Canon ImageClass MF733Cdw since 2017. Your review is very accurate. The touchscreen does not always respond to my touch. You and I have the same trouble. I bought four high-capacity toners in order to save money, even though I expect not to do lots of printing. Otherwise, I am satisfied to have it with my Dell computer. I set up the printer on the printer stand all by myself.

I have the mf731cdw. You can setup email so that when you scan a document or image, the result gets emailed to your account. Very nice and no losing connection with the Windows 10 scanner.
How to take out jammed paper from this printer?I followed the instructions showing on the screen and opened the back door ,but I couldn't find the jammed paper. Could you tell me the steps?

i have a 733C and recently i'm getting "marks' like a light gray fog on the left hand side of printed matter. what should i do to correct this problem?? any hints to correct this problem will surely be happily accepted, thanks!
I bought the 735cx today. First of all it is physically very heavy and recommended that two people carry it to its eventual resting place. I managed on my own but could have done with help, especially getting it out the box.
I just bought this today and so far it has been excellent. Setup was really easy. Installation of drivers was straight forward but you only get one piece of software with it and that's the Scanner interface. You don't get any fancy printing software like you get with Canon's InkJet printers.
Documents are sharp and black and print very quickly, even from cold.
Photos printing from Glossy 180 gram photo paper using the Manual feeder were acceptable but not as good as a Canon InkJet Photo printer. I had to set up a Printer Profile inside the Preferences with the "Add" button.
I set it to: Single/Sided, Manual feeder, Paper Type III 160-200 gr and set to Vivid Photo printing. Then I selected that profile for best photo results.
So far, I highly recommend this printer.
May I ask you how the experience with the touch screen has been/is?
@@gianluca2075 OK. A bit laggy but works OK. It's a good thing that most of the operations can be performed by software on the computer. I only have to use the screen panel very occasionally.
@@RebMordechaiReviews Thanks! I read that someone had issues with it not getting the right touches, my doubt was when using copy and scan to email without having a computer/app ready.
You did this review back in 2018 - I have had this printer for the past 2 years - been "knock on wood" perfect... toner cart aftermarket - just bought a set of 4 for under $50 and test printed perfectly. Go for it if you are thinking of buying a laser color printer - even a used working one would be better than ink jet crap!
Which brand of aftermarket are you using?
This was a great review. Question, does this printer auto detect pdf size? So, could I put legal in the tray and regular 8.5x11 in the fold out and print docs out for a loan signing?

I have this printer; when I try to copy or scan a multipage document the pages don't feed smoothly - I often end up laying each page on the glass. Do you know if there is an adjustment for the document feeder?
Do you know how to remove and replace the Transfer belt assembly? Mine ripped to shreds by a piece of plastic from a knock off toner cartridge. I missed the plastic sticking out at the bottom at install. Please help. I found the replacement part. Mine is actually the mf644CDW.

you are very accurate in your review. I have the same exam printer and I have the same experience. My fingers are small and yet I still encounter the same issues you encounter with the screen. I am getting a dotted line on the left side of the page when I use use color, but not when I print black and white. I am unable to get rid of this dotted magenta line. I hope by replacing the toner cartridges will solve it. I will come back and let you know via comment. Thank you for sharing your experience with this particular printer.
I changed the all toners and the pink dotted line is gone!
I have the color image MF8380 cdw for a while now. now the printer is printing with blue lines on the left side of the page. How can i fix it?
Thank you for the review. I just purchased the Canon MF641Cw. It goes to sleep after a couple of seconds. When we go to print, we have to hit the sleep button to take it out of that mode, then the screen prompts with different paper trays to choose from. Should I do a hard reset or is this normal?
Check that the paper in your page setup matches what the printer thinks it has in the paper try. (Plain letter 8.5x11 most likely) Any mismatch and it'll prompt for paper type etc.
Re: Sleep, I have mine wired into the network (not wifi) and it wakes up ok on its own. Might be a firmware update for the printer - check cannon support site?

I've had issues with the colors all looking faded since I purchased this printer, and I've gone through the manual and think I've tried everything to troubleshoot the issue. It's the Canon toner that came with the printer, and it has looked slightly faded and simply much poorer quality than I expected since I started using it. I also bought new higher quality color laser paper to see if that helped, but no luck...has anyone experienced this issue?
I bought 744 but it has same problem. You need read comments to 744cdw version on amazon.de. There is one review where a guy describe how to fix roblems with canon printers, especially faded colors 🙂
Hey Sudz, thanks for the review. I have this printer with a MacBook Pro. I'm having a problem with my computer constantly loosing its connection with the printer. I am constantly have to go into my Mac settings, deleting my printer and then re-adding it to my network. I have tried it both wireless and USB, both seem to loose connection. Have you hear of this before? I'm thinking that I may have a problem with my MacBook Pro rather than my printer, but I am not sure. thanks for your help!
I've had this printer since 2018. I have the same network issues, and I'm also printing from a MacBook Pro. Try setting up the printer's IP address, rather than deleting the printer by name. There is some info in the manual about this or Canon support can tell you how to do this. Thankfully, they still provide tech support even after the printer is out of warranty.
Every time I print from my Mac desktop 27", I have turn off and then back on the Canon before it will see and print the jobs. As long as it stays busy, I can keep adding print jobs without issue. Once it catches up and there's a lapse, it's back to restart to get it printing again

yes, paper tray too small, but I'm not spending another $200 for the larger add-on tray.
usually, after I've entered print jobs, I have to turn off and then back on the printer before it will see and print them.
If I can keep the printer busy with no lapses, I can keep entering jobs and it will keep on printing.
After it's caught up and there is a lapse, once again it won't print without a reset...annoying
How much plain paper (e.g.8.5x11 19lbs.) would you estimate the front dropdown multipurpose tray can handle? Just to clarify I am not asking how much the paper drawer can handle. Awesome Video BTW,.

Whats your reasoning for the name brand toner cartridges? Is it for quality or output? We'd used generic in many of our color printers, and had just as good of quality. But NOT in this machine. I've tried the calibration, Color Mis-Match settings, Auto Gradation settings but these never seem to finish with out error or improvement. I have gotten all the software updates also.
Any Ideas?
I tried aftermarket toner cartridges and always had color bleed. switched to OEM and it went away.
I'm having one issue when I scan A4 on the flatbed scanner it crop upper part of the paper
Check the paper size setting - A4 is slightly taller than letter. Manually set it to A4
My printer is leaving terrible streaks of magenta and yellow. I have tried to clean the fixing assembly but always get a "cannot clean fixing assembly" error. I have looked everywhere. Can you help? It's super annoying because I do love this printer.

Have you been printing on labels? Label sheets should only go through the printer once - the glue exposed after you remove a label can gum up the transfer units. I haven't taken this printer apart so I can't help you with cleaning the drum/transfer units but that's where I'd start.
I'm seriously considering buying this printer. Are there any issues u experienced with it? Would you recommend it over other color laser printers in its class?
Only issue I occasionally have is the autofeeder can't handle something remotely wrinkled.
any idea why printing from email on iOS (AirPrint) doesn't work? (it created a gray area where the header is, where the subject, CC, From: are). All other apps work fine, just not email, the HP printer before worked perfectly fine. Unsure why canon doesn't play nicely with ios.
to my knowledge this printer does not support AirPrint. I was surprised that it didn't.
Why do all of our computers say printing and connected to printer but the printer never prints anything?

Approximately how many copies can I get from the Canon image class before I have to get more cartridges?
Depends on what toner you buy, and what you're copying. Several Thousand of text-only Black and White.
Can you reference or elaborate as to drum replacement or how to do so on this machine? I'm having a print quality issue and have been told to replace the drum. (The Fuser Unit has already been replaced).
The drums are integrated into the toner cartridges.
My 743Cdw uses 055 toner cartridges (I wish that Canon would discontinue the practice of changing toner cartridges with each new iteration of devices).
My church has an MF733Cdw. The two machines are essentially the same. What differentiates the two is, primarily, the included applications.
Under the Menu group are a collection of maintenance and adjustment options to help keep the 731/733/735/741/743/745 printing well. Try running them. If they don't help, reach out to Canon Customer Support. 🙂
I bought a lower version of this. Makes more noise than I thought it would. Very grindy noises. Sounds like it's turning it's gears in to chunks. Was a bit of a job setting it up on a MAC, at least I found so. The included CD didn't work, just gave me some BS about not compatible with the OS, so had to go to the web site and figure out which drivers to download. Last I already had a paper jam on the top feeder, seems the paper need to go in dead square. It's Apr 11 2021, I bought it yesterday. All that aside, it's print quality is excellent.
There is about an 18 inch long 2 inch wide plastic strip that comes separate from the unit. Anyone know where it goes?
I think it’s needed if you get the expansion trays in the future. A filler piece
@George When using legal paper, you have to expand the drawer which causes it to stick out the front of the printer. The cover just goes over the tray as a dust cover.
I have a question. i bought this printer last week. there is a piece of plastic about 2ft long that i have no idea of where this piece supposed to be. Any idea?
It’s a dust cover if you use legal paper in the bottom tray.
My old inkjet printer would dry out after not using it for a while. With laser that does not happen, correct? Are there any issues with prints if I'm not printing anything, let say, for a month?
Correct. Even a YEAR.
Only thing that will eventually dry out is the rubber rollers... but that is the same with ANY printer in existence.

I'm wondering if you can answer a question for me. I have this model in my classroom and all of a sudden it has started printing as if the toners are empty (all of them), though it shows that 100% of the colored toners are available, and 90% of black. Any idea what might be going on? I bought it brand new just before Thanksgiving. I print very little color. Mostly black and white.
It has a 3 year warranty. Is there any powder or residue on the pages? Could be the fuser (which melts the toner to the page) has konked out. Also, check if there is some dust or a paper bit blocking the connections between the toner and trays
I noticed that it's printing a previous image on top of what I'm actually printing (double image). There's no residue. The image quality looks as if the toner is virtually empty. I'll investigate a little more before I call them.
sounds like a bad transfer unit. Not sure if its replaceable in this printer - But 100% warranty covered as this printer isn't a year old yet.
Cleaning the printer. My husband hadn't realized, but he mistakenly purchased a cheaper toner and now we are experiencing issues with lines on both sides of the paper. Ran the clean fixing assembly, but it doesn't really clean anything. Any assistance is appreciated.
I am having similiar issue. I just bought my printer with cheaper toner...the back of my paper has lines🤷🏽♀️
Prepare new cartridge message
I have 30% left and the printer will not print, tells me to prepare new cartridge...As expensive as these still are I want to be able to use all the toner. Is there a way to bypass this message?
With the current sales, the Canon MF644 is $299, MF743 is $364, and HP M749 is $399. I'm trying to decide which one is best for not just text but also photos. One plus for Canon is the 3 year warranty.
Laserjet Printers aren't fantastic for Photos. This printer does not to 4x6 or 5x7 paper.
I would say MF644 if the toner didn't cost my soul. MF733 is actually cheaper if you add toner cost. As for photos you might as well get a photo printer or just go to fed-ex depending on the size of the photos.
I bought this printer to use with my HP laptop, however the laptop doesn't recognize it when I try to add it as a wireless printer. Any ideas?
Sounds like HP insists you use an HP printer? HP is very cheesy about this. I tried to save money by refilling my HP ink cartridges, HP didn't like this either. By-BY HP.
Right click Start menu> Device Manager> than left click in white area of box> go to Action> Device's & Printer's/ than click Add A Printer. Be sure to make certain that direct connection is on on your printer screen
Need help since the drawer won’t close completely
The scan function won't work with my mac laptop. I downloaded the scan driver and connected the printer. I've tried from the printer itself to going to system preferences and opening up the scan menu to opening up the scan driver app. Nothing works! Hellppp.
Make sure your laptop and printer are on the same network. Depending on your router it’s possible wireless and wired networks may not talk to each other. Not really a Mac guy so that’s all I’ve got - sorry!

Can this do duplex copying and scanning on the adf?
Yes, however I'm finding the ADF not very reliable. Pages go in on an angle if they're not absolutely perfect

I've enjoyed this printer until recently when it started flagging a "paper jam" or "fix the paper tray settings." There was nothing wrong. I unloaded and reloaded the paper, opened and closed some doors, and the unit worked again - for a day or two - and then the same jam/setting alert. It's time consuming to continually try to figure out what the problem is, only to have it miraculously fix itself.
Can one print 4x6 photos with the MF733CDW printer? That is, is there a 4x6 tray for 4x6 photo paper?

Canon makes two distinct printer types. One for photos and one for general use. This unit does not make photos. The printer will specifically say Photo Printer if it does. And a photo printer only prints on photo paper.
Yeah man. You can use the "multi-purpose tray," aka the manual paper feed. It has guides on it you can adjust to 4x6 size. Likewise in the paper tray; you should be able to close up the paper guides inside the paper tray to hold a stack of 4x6 glossy (for laser!) photo paper.
@@SudzReviews I'm looking to buy this printer on black friday and I was looking into this myself. I do believe it is possible via the fold-out multi-purpose tray (manual feed) which has adjustable paper guides on it. The same should be possible with the paper guides in the tray. Er, well, it should be adjustable to some degree, but I don't know if it'll go down to 4x6 size.
@@kickdowndoors4291 This is incorrect. The world is not black and white. This laser printer will do a GOOD job of photographs and an excellent job of cartoon/animated/graphics for business and presentations and whatnot. There does exist laser-printer safe photo paper in a variety of sheens.
The Canon MF733Cdw does not have the option to utilize the 5GHz network. It can only connect using a 2.4GHz network. Matter of fact Canon's more upscale units such as the C3500 are the same way.
Just for a Printer , I don't think 5 GHz gonna make any different and signal is drop easily too.
The 5.0GHz bands are less crowded than the 2.4GHz bands, so, being able to access 5.0 could provide an advantage over 2.4.
At home I reserve 2.4 for smartphones and 5.0 for computers/tablets/2-in-1 devices. No 5.0 data drops unless I move a good distance from WiFi spots.
I also administer the Internet network at my church. Same arrangement with no data issues. 🙂
Where is the Best place to buy original cartridges?
Cheapest original cartridges I found was Amazon. They price match big box stores
What is the extra plastic piece that was in the box for?
I believe fits in if you order an expansion paper tray.
When you use legal sized paper in the paper tray, lay the plastic piece over the gap as a dust cover.
@@johnrnord4147 I confirm that. I got a 731 and at first I thought it could not do legal. After a while I figured out the tray expands and sticks out the front of the printer when using legal paper.
I meant to add that they need to make this printer more durable too. take today for example I was going at it hard for like 30 minutes ultimately escalating to a rusty chain whipping it into utter desolation. The power button popped off in the toner tray is now ajar. Canon, if you're reading this, please take my advice: if you're going to make an unreliable piece of crap you better make it durable enough to withstand the the blinding rage of a thousand clinched fists and boots,, the white-hot unquinchable hatred that only Canon printers can bring out in man.

like injekt printers I must replace the ink when it finshes .
There is powder toner instead of ink. They cost a lot but they last much longer.
How good is the scan quality ?
From flatbed it does pretty well. The Autofeeder never is perfectly straight which is annoying.
I hate my printer! I keep getting error number 853. I have no idea what it and it doesn't tell me anything whats wrong.
That error has a couple causes. Generally it’s either your computer cancelling the print mid way through or you’re printing a huge (too large) file or a corrupt file. Try going to canons website and download the latest drivers. Also try pressing the start button, type “services.msc” (no quotes) and right click on “print spooler” and restart. Then print again.
Oh my good, the all colors toner is very expensive, I get a set of colors for only 75 $ from China loved markets. and the printing quality is very good.

@@tracygao86 My dear the Chinese cartridge set is available in local Iraqi market at maintenance places or printers shop, I haven't seen it on the internet. Plus you can't trust in any sources of these unoriginal cartridges until they have been tested by maintenance guy in your city because of unexpected bad results on your printers.
I saw some cartridges of different models on Ali express: www.aliexpress.com.
But don't trust in untested things.
Bought this one for a vet clinic - 3000 pages per month. Got it last may and 5 months later we are replacing it. Loses wifi connection all the time and won't print from laptops on our Mac network. Right from the first install, I have never been able to get direct USB connection to work with iMac, so had to use wifi instead, which is undependable. Now, print density is doing a slow fade and we're at the point where output is unreadable (not the toner because it does it with Black and all four colors). No fix for this in the settings. Am now looking for something better to replace it with. Our last Canon all in one color laser worked for 2 1/2 years before dying. Not impressed with Canon quality any more; thinking of goin with Brother.
My experience with brothers is that the toners are cheaper but the fuser/transfer drums don't last long and you replace the whole printer every 1.5-2 years

Depends on the models you're looking at. Not a fan of HP's small office line. They appear to be pushing inkjet more.

Washer, Dryer and Canon Laser Printer all about the same size.
It makes it easier to scan your laundry when necessary.
Can this print 110lb cardstock?
Nothing in the specs about it but if it doesn't bend easily I'd say no.

Call Canon support. Its US based and they helped me with the same problem.
I have no problem until I update FIRMWARE .....
Do not update firmware , Canon built good hardware ..(Heavy - Very Heavy) but bad ... very bad software.

Setup Scan to Email are VERY EASY ...
Just put in many Email of your choice that's it ..... HP Printer do the rest for you.
Now I use HP Printer and scan to Email .... Great Printer for 1/3 of Canon MF733 .. and a lot lighter too.

You push buttons way too fast. Just slow down and forget the fast forward. Otherwise pretty good video.

This one is newer. Has nfc. More support for cloud options. If price is same I’d go with canon.

The Canon 733/735 and HP 477 look very similar and have specs that are, likewise, either the same, or, very close to each other. That would apply to other models.
That leads me to believe that both companies use a common contract manufacturer to produce their respective consumer/small office machines.
Agree with: Heavy, easy to change toner, faulty touch screen. Best feature: automatic 2-sided scanning with ADF. Worst feature: having to assign paper size every time printing to different size paper. Other printers take their direction from the PC. this miserable printer requires that you match the computer's paper setting by manually setting the paper size on the touch screen display on the printer. It is a royal pain! If you have this thing in the laundry room, you have to do a lot of running around whenever you switch from letter size to legal size to #10 envelopes to ... everytime you want to print to a different size paper you have to reset the printer's settings. AWFUL shortcoming.

Typically (HP & Canon) printers work on the 2.4G network.
2.4Ghz is more than fast enough just for Printer and strong signal than 5Ghz
$760 (USD) to replace 4 cartridges...Oh Laaawdy lawd.
Seems brutal but when you get thousands of pages vs the 100-200 out of an inkjet for 100 bucks it actually makes sense - that being said if you print predominately black and white it is MUCH cheaper

I just bought the 644 because I got tired of the hassles of clogged inkjet nozzles. It's super dry where I live and If I don't print at least once or twice a week (and that means all the colors, too), the nozzles get clogged. Even taking the cartridges out and forcing distilled water through them and letting them soak for a day wouldn't unclog them the last time. I'm so looking forward to just having my printer work when I need it.
$760 is nowhere near half price of $1000...instead of 50%, it's 76% of full price

Oh yeah you definitely should especially because my boss says they discontinued them but they have to be one of the best. I use it everyday to scan packing slips and electronic schematics. But it’s like you said the is little to not like about this Canon other then only 300 sheets of paper ( which at my job goes fast 😂) and one we had in inventory for too long and I guess the humidity or something messed up the fuser and the warranty expired, but don’t believe canon when they try to tell you the fuser is 800$ ( their price ) and it’s cheaper to buy a new one when Amazon has them for around low 300$ and I grabbed my replacement from eBay for 220$ 😒😒
does it print card?
Not officially. I printed on some heavy paper (not quite card stock) without issue. (80lb text weight, not 80lb card stock)

Card stock is hard on any printer that doesn't adjust gradation. Which is any printer under a few thousand dollars as far as I know. If you plan on pumping out thousands of pages of card stock expect much more wear and tear.
That being said I've yet to have a jam using the bypass tray for all sorts of labels and envelopes so I think you'll be fine for occasional usage.

That is a small tray! But so many crappy printers it will have to do!
As a small business owner I must say, this is the worst printer to purchase! Seek something else because the amount of calls to customer service (*only open between 10am-6) it is not worth it. Get a HP printer.
I have this printer and HATE it! Never prints the first time I send to the printer. I have to constantly his restart and then I am lucky if I get a document out of the POS. It hates Word documents. I have to resend files regularly and when it actually decides to print it, I get multiple copies. Is this Canon's ploy to have us order toner. I wish I would have purchased an HP instead of this one.

I can't get my MF743cdw to print with 30% on toner level. I tried to google canon support but the process still didn't work. Can you help?
take the toner out and rotate it a few times. if its a non-genuine cartridge, that can happen as well.
