  • Nearly 50 million Americans lack an active ID that has their current name and address. And if they’re in a state with strict voter ID laws, it likely means they can’t vote. But who in America lacks photo ID and who gets squeezed out of the electorate because of it? Lauren Kunis of VoteRiders joins Marc Elias to break down these stats, myths behind noncitizens voting and more.

And much easier! Nowadays most agencies require 3 pieces of picture ID just to get an ID. If you already have that 3 pieces of ID then why tf would you need to go after another one??? This is just an ignorant law! If you lost your birth certificate most states require 3 pieces of ID just to get your birth certificate. Same with a social security card and same with State DMV’s. FL passed this law a few years ago but the Republican government pushed a delay tactics that the voting rights will only be restored once the financial debts many of those ex-inmates have/had is 100% paid. I believe a millionaire opened a special fun at the time to help pay those debts and have as many ex-inmates rights restored. Georgia makes it difficult to get a driver's license. Another thing they did in Georgia is to separate state and county election day from the national primary. So far I have had to vote three times this year. I live in a rural area and don't have to wait in line. But when I lived in the city I had to wait between 3 to 6 hours to vote. If I still lived in the city I wouldn't be able to vote in 4 elections in one year. All of these little laws that fly under the radar make it easier for Republicans to hold onto power in Georgia.
Things must change. But for change to happen everyone must vote. We have to get people registered and get them an ID and educate them about voter laws.

    • @RNMSC

I would note that this is mostly due to the fact that the federal government has (up until the decision on article 3 of the 14th amendment elate last year) been far more limited in what it can require states to do as part of administering elections. Now with the Supreme Court decision, I can see things like mandating a common set of requirements (I'd like them to select the requirements of the state of Minnesota as a template, but I'm biased.) for voting. I can guarantee that any such legislation is going to be challenged almost immediately. Many of the states that require ID of some sort to vote have written it into their state constitution by having such amendments passed in elections. The Minnesota amendment to mandate this was denied by the voters.
Right now, the only time that I've observed that an ID comes into play at the election polling place is if you are doing same day registration, and even there the alternative options for getting same day registration don't make it an absolute requirement, it's more along the lines that it simplifies making sure that you are voting at the correct voting place, which if you've recently moved into the area may be a point of some confusion.
This might be considered a bit of an anathema in other states.

    • @RedWinePlease

I agree. It will be difficult to implement common requirements.
Maybe one path is to deny Federal funds to a state if they don't implement Federal election requirements including a national voting registry.

Excellent discussion. When I tried to renew my driver's license a couple of years ago, I had an awful time! I had my current license, my passport, my birth certificate, some utility bills, my SS card (not just rhe number, the flippin' card) and STILL the clerk at the DMV wouldn't accept I am who I am because I have a couple of different married names and some had my middle name and some did not! No question about my identity, just my name was not exactly the same on every document. I got a little panicky, thinking I could effectively be barred from driving and from voting because of this clerical nonsense! I've had a number of passports and been driving for over 50 years! She finally relented when I brought in my car registration. Really pretty scary. Took 3 trips to the DMV to accomplish what used to be a routine task. I am an old lady. I ALWAYS vote! I'm still mad at that clerk!

It cost me $15 to get her birth certificate. That is prohibitive to people who don't have money. Also it took 6 weeks to get her birth certificate. And what about people who were born at home and not in a hospital. You have to prove you are a citizen without a birth certificate. That costs money as well. 😮

I was able to get a passport easier than an Alabama “real ID.” I’ve attempted to get one twice and was turned away-once because I had recently moved and my W-2 reflected my previous address and once because of ALL the documents they required didn’t have my FULL name (first, middle, last). I’ve always been called by my middle name, so some mail/items on their impossible laundry list of required “proof” simply have my middle and last name. They didn’t care that I had brought a birth certificate, passport, W-2/tax return, valid driver’s liscense, two pieces of mail from state and federal agencies with my current address, voter ID, etc. I’ve been turned away two years in a row. If you’re a woman, a renter, or young person who doesn’t have a deed/mortgage or utility bill in your name, you are in big trouble. I’m waiting for the moment when this particular ID is required to vote in Alabama. I have two college degrees and am a state retiree, yet I haven’t been able to qualify. I have used my passport for most purposes, but how many people have those in Alabama?

In Australia we register with the Electoral Commission, a Federal body, at age 18. We are required to notify said commission of any change of address before any voting day.
On a voting day, it is compulsory to vote and you are asked for you full name and then your address. If that information is on the register, you are crossed off and you vote.
Voting can be done by mail or by "absentee vote' which is basically mail in.
There is, of course some gerrymandering but that is kept pretty much under control.
There is generally no valid excuse for not voting and you can be fined for not voting.
The Electoral Commission is in charge of all voting, be it state or federal.
This is a simple system and appears to be the direct opposite of the one in "the land of the free"

As an observation, it would be great if the RealID requirements for newer licenses provided the information required to validate citizenship, however it's my impression that things like citizenship are more like 'documented' as part of the RealID requirement, but it doesn't require that the citizenship be for the USA. I.e. if you are a green card holder, who needs a drivers license for work, and travel, it's going to have RealID requirements that don't necessarily include that you be a citizen of the USA. As citizenship will be documented in the RealID information, states with citizenship requirements for voting should also be sending out the equipment required to validate the RealID content for the license, which should include whether the bearer is a citizen, without having to haul around added information. And when you register to vote, if one must attach a photocopy of documentation of Citizenship, a photocopy of the drivers license (and related bar codes) should provide that verification. It doesn't eliminate the need to have that information in order to go through the DMV process of getting a state ID and or License issued with RealID functionality though.
I'm in a state that doesn't require ID to vote. I do have an 'Enhanced' drivers license, which grants me the opportunity to drive (or travel by boat) to specific other countries (canada and the Bahamas, possibly Mexico) without having to have a passport, unless I'm flying from those locations. This is slightly odd in that this license does provide me with the ability to board airplanes as it goes above and beyond the general RealID requirements. (They require proof of address for this license which the regular drivers license does not require. Hey you got it in the mail, that's enough. Enhanced ID won't even be issued w /o proof of your current address. That's going to be fun to set up when I finally move to my retirement location. (Fun, as I won't have any utility bills.)

She’s absolutely right.. I didn’t think about the transgender not wanting an ID to go along with thier birth name. It takes A LOT to get a proper ID in the way they need it to be. That also should be changed! If your trans and you can prove it in some way then make it where they can get a ONE TIME ID that corresponds with what gender they identify as. This means they can’t just go in and change thier trans name into a different trans name for whatever reasons. This just makes things much easier for the trans community. They shouldn’t have to go thru all the bs of having to go thru the legal name change and everything else that may be involved. If they look and act like the gender they claim or live thier life as and they want thier name changed and gender changed to that effect then it should be allowed without all the needless bs! This means they would be put into the system as thier gender identity and they can’t go to other places and get 20 other IDs with various names and various genders.

I’m on a Conference with St Vincent De Paul in my city so I see LOTS and LOTS of people come on for help that has no IDs and can’t even get a box of food at many places right here in my city because of all this needless ID bs. I happen to be the Conference President of this SVDP sector and members of our Conference wanted to start an ID process for people to come in to get help… I struck that one down QUICK before it even got started in our Conference. Some of the members of the Conference didn’t like that struck down but that’s just the way it is. I’m not about to turn anyone down from something to eat or someone that desperately needs help in something (within reason or within something we can do) just because they don’t have an ID and can’t get one because of how difficult society made it to get one without a bunch of needless crap…. And I feel the same about the voting thing. Not having an ID shouldn’t prohibit any US CITIZEN from voting. The way we work with people without an ID is they must first apply for the help they get from us then we issue them a unique id number. Once we issue this number thier info is entered into a computer we have that is also databases into other help sources around my city. Once that number comes in and gets help then we mark and date that number of when and what kind of help they got. This way they can’t go to another help source in the city to double down on the help they already received from us. The only way they can is if we couldn’t give them a certain kind of help they needed depending on our budget situation at the time. If this occurs then we will refer them to another help source then we will mark thier number that we that they tried with us and that we had no means to do it. We have found this system works very well and it makes our process easier for those that may want to ‘drain the system.
In summary this same exact process COULD be done for A LOT of things including voting.

When I voted the first time in 1972, I was in college and students were not allowed to vote in Chapel Hill if they lived on campus. I took a bus to my hometown, walked from the bus station to my polling place, walked to my parents' house and had dinner. My Dad drove me back to the bus station, and I took the bus back to Chapel Hill. I'm very happy that early in-person voting is an option now. I'm going to vote on October 17th this year.

You need a I D for almost everything, buying cigarettes, medicine, liquor, to get on a plane, to get a driver's license. You should need a I D for voting. What is wrong with people who think that you should not have one to vote

Most don’t realize how difficult and EXPENSIVE it can be to get a new state ID once expired. My elderly mother had chosen not to drive when renewing her license came due in Texas. She didn’t think about having a legal ID, thinking she could use her expired DL. But in order to sign papers legally she needed her ID. Because she had been widowed and remarried, she needed all the birth dates and places of her spouses, both passes away. Dates of marriages and exact locations were required to get copies of marriage certificates. My mom was in her 90’s and like many elderly, could not remember all the dates. It took over $100 for all the certificates and a registration on Ancestry to get the needed information. It is utterly ridiculous that her expired PICTURE ID and passport were not proof of who she was, along with her birth certificate and social security card. It took $$$ and months to get all the required info.

I am a white man who enjoys the election day voting process in California. My experience is to walk into my polling place, give my name, receive a ballot, execute my choices and deposit the ballot in the box. In my 55 years of voting, there has never been an occurrence of voter fraud. There is no valid reason for any additional identification. Vote Blue to retain your rights.

Things that require a valid photo ID: buying alcohol, opening a bank account, applying for food stamps, applying for welfare, applying for Social Security and Medicare, renting/buying a car, renting/buying a house, flying, getting married, purchasing a gun, adopting a pet, applying for a hunting license, renting a motel room, buying a cell phone, picking up a prescription, visiting a casino, obtaining a protest/parade permit, donating blood, purchasing age-restricted video games, purchasing tobacco, and applying for unemployment benefits.
Oh...and attending a Kamala Harris For President rally.
Are you telling me that "millions of people" are unable to do those things?

Exactly. All my immigrant turned citizen family members (and all other legal immigrants I know) have valid IDs, why is it so hard for US born citizens to get one? 🤔

I voted my first time in 1972 and have voted each year unless I couldn’t vote in the state where I was living because I waited too long to get a voter ID or after 1981 when I became a felon
